Re: [arr] 'Rahman's music would not have worked for my films' - Director Bala

2009-03-14 Thread Cool Dude
ARR doesn't want us to abuse other musicians like Raja. As fans, we should
respect that. I would never say bad things about a legend like Raja, anyway.
He is an important part of the holy trinity of Tamil Film Music (along with MSV
and ARR). But, Bala is not a musician. I'm not sure if he is musically
qualified to comment about Rahman's music. Granted he decides the technicians
for his movies and he has the right to choose anyone. He could have simply
said Raja has done a great job for me in Sethu, Pithamagan and Naan
Kadavul and Yuvan has done a good job in Nandha. So, I never thought of
going to someone else for the musical needs of my films. Rather he says, with
surety, that Rahman's music would not have worked for his films. That borders
on arrogance. But, I wouldn't blame him; the hopeless tamil media talks about
him as if he is the next incarnation of Akira Kurosawa and this man probably
believes that. IMHO, his movies are not that great - granted they are
different but that doesn't necessarily translate to great. He is good but not
extraordinary. One thing is true - Raja has given extraordinary music for his
movies.

Anyway, who cares what Bala thinks? He is not the be all and end all of
cinema. Rahman has conquered great heights and he will continue his great work
and please his millions of fans. He has faced criticism from a lot of people
the last 17 years and has answered them all in style. Listen to what
Balamurali Krishna says about Rahman now. The same BMK, the legend he is,
didn't have so much good to say about Rahman few years back. Same with Raja.
Now he is hailing him as a phenomenal musician. I'm not blaming these
wonderful musicians for not talking great about Rahman in the past. But, he
has earned their praise. That is more important. In addition, there are a
host of great/good directors working with Rahman and countless others queuing
up to work with him.

Hey Rawat - 'Khwaja' ka lyrics is written by Kashif and not Jaaved Akthar.

is by ARR, he said I did not see anything special (sadly enough. may
because it was in bad quality. also we know that ARR's music grows
  but he does not).

I am a known JA basher so I thought I can say about this song also.

khwaja song might be holding additional value for muslims due to its
religious connotations, and for general fans it might have got some high
weightage due to the anecdotes of ARR having composed it already and
then AG using it in the film.

But as a song, I find khwaja song quite barren and monotonous if I can
say that. It is a sort of introvert song giving a feel that a person
must be singing it within his heart and mind. It is his personal
pleasure. Others would not be able to connect to it.

Firstly, the song has some 1:20 initial alaaps that are quire boring to
say and kill the entire beauty of song that comes after that. It is more
like the sounds generated when a player tunes up his instruments
before starting to really play it up. Such a long wasted part is a sin
in current busy time. Those ya khwaja ji, moinuddin, gareeb nawaz are
without any lyrical or music value. So, I think the start itself is
 badly thought up.

But then the song starts with lovely music BUT, BUT BUT poor lyrics. A
typical lack of creativity in the monotonous, logically-built up
lyrics as is usually the case with Javed Akhtar.

 Khwaja Mere Khwaja
 Dil Mein Sama ja
 Bebaso ki Taqdeer
 Tu ne hai sawari

There is no rhyming, no deep devotion. All that dil mein sama ja type
of phrases had been used a 1000 times in cheap ladki-pataao songs in 60s
and here he comes up with that in a 21st century devotional song.

I would say that the major failure of the song remains in the poor
lyrics. Then, it fails in arrangements of vocals. None of the voices
carry and ethos and pathos. They are just singing an any song, not a
religious song for the most respected muslim personality of Indian
subcontinent. pronunciations are also not clear. that bebaso ki taqdeer
tu ne hai sanwari, has bebaso and tu ne pronounced so pooorly that one
has to strain to hear it and make the meaning of it. Sad that it is our
 man himself.

And then Tere darbaar mein khwaza noor ko mainne dekha has noor
pronounced so poorly by our man himself, and then there are alaaps, and
then the music gives the impression that the line is going to be
repeated, tere darbar mein khwaja - but they drop the line
unceremoniously and begin another line - sar jhukaate hain auliya.
What was so great in mentioning that auliya sar jhukate hain, so what,
is that why you feel respect for him? I think the respect should have
come from within, not due to seeing how others are respecting him.

and then tu hai khwaja - rutaba hai pyara chahne se tujhko
mustafa ko paya that xxx is still not clear to my aging ears. and
lastly that hai mere peer ka sadqa, tera daman hai thama, tali hai
bala hamari, chhaya hai khumar tera, jitna bhi rashq karein beshaq, to
ab hai XXX mere khwaja, tere kadmo ko mere rahnuma nahin chhodna gawara.
I don't get what exactly is the concept. No rhyming, no poetry, just
some words have got hammerred in. It must be the poorest lyrics by Javed.

I would say that ARR's voice is also not as sweet enough as he is famed
for, there is a rare shrillness, a hollow in ARR's voice that I don't
remember having heard in any other song. May be he was trying a new
voice but it didn't suit my ears.

all the internal aalaaps also are confusing, making it a classical song.
They are not even bringing a sense of a trance.

And as I already said once that JA music was a personal music and didn't
reflect the lavishness of the film.

I think I can describe now what I meant by that personal vs lavishness.
Listen to the music between 3:40 - 4:05. That Persian sort of. Now, that
is what I call a royal music, that has lavishness, that has luxury, that
is group music, public music. Also the instrument that stars playing at
the backdrop at about 6:10 and continues till the end of song. that
single instrument is giving a royal touch to the song. That type of
 music is what I

I must say that *Heaven on Earth* or Videsh is very different from Provoked.
It's like what Shakespeare said - There are three stories in the world and
its how you tell them that makes one different from the other. Yes, this
story is partly about domestic abuse, but for me, the film is about the
power of imagination. When reality becomes so grim, how can you use your
imagination to liberate yourself? That is what the film is about. The milieu
is of course the isolation of the first generation working class immigrant,

because it's the first generation that suffers the most.
*What other films are you working on?*
I'm working on two films currently. One is a film called Exclusion with
Akshay Kumar and the other is based on Sulman Rushdie's book called The
Midnights Children.

*You've worked with the music director A.R. Rahman before. But how about

(Laughs) Yes, A.R did the music for Fire, Earth and Water. I'd love to work
with the Oscar winner now, you're right (laughs). He definitely deserved an
Oscar. But we should never ever forget that he has always been a brilliant

Slumdog Millionaire' mints million rands in South Africa

Johannesburg (IANS): Following its recent sweep at the Oscars, Slumdog
Millionaire raked in more than a million rands after opening at 20 cinemas
across South Africa this past weekend.

The Mumbai-based movie by British filmmaker Danny Boyle grossed over 1.4
million on its opening weekend, playing to sold out houses and clinching the
number one spot in the hearts of moviegoers everywhere.

Lining up against Hollywood hit Watchmen, the other high-profile opener over
the weekend, Slumdog Millionaire made 22 percent more at the box office with
68 percent less prints than Watchmen.

At a print average of just over 70,000 rands, Slumdog Millionaire more than
doubled the print average of As it is in Heaven, the most successful film of
all time in South Africa.

It is rare to find a film that is both a critical and commercial success, but
'Slumdog Millionaire' has gone into this unique millionaire's club, Isabel
Rao, chief executive of major cinema group Ster-Kinekor Distribution, told IANS.

This is a film that overcame its 'art/niche' label and went on to perform
commercially to audiences everywhere.

Rao said Slumdog Millionaire was the top film at the South African box-office,
on all circuits - art and commercial.

The film's success epitomises the communal interaction of moviegoing and its
unique ability to transcend cultural barriers makes it truly a
'one-in-a-million' success story.

Rao expressed the hope that this success of a film about life in Mumbai would
also encourage audiences across all communities in South Africa to watch more
Indian movies as well: We hope the film's success also serves to inspire
audiences to sample Indian cinema more broadly.

Ster-Kinekor has been screening Bollywood movies for nearly a decade now at its
cinemas across the country, but has become more selective in recent years,
opting only for some of the best titles.

However, the support has come mainly from the South African Indian community
and Indian expatriates here, with a sprinkling of interest from Black and White
patrons.

Two of the bigger titles screened here last year were Jodhaa Akbar, which
grossed 289,000 rands on its opening weekend, and the highly-acclaimed Aamir
Khan film Taare Zameen Par, which only grossed 51,000 rands on its opening
weekend but went on to do much better.

ya, u have listed points that u have found lacking in the song and it
doesnt necessarily need to coincide with other perceptions, always. there r
innumerous people who like this song and m one among those. okay, that
doesnt mean that u have to like song because innumerous people like the
song.
i have seen people even pointing out dozens of -ve points against ARRs vande
matharam and infact, ARRs humma humma and the worst of the best being some
average opinion on Roja album (remember reading it years before in tamil
magazine). but majority of the people, apart from ARR fans, know that they
are brilliant in their own way.

there cant be anything in the world that can be appreciated by everyone.
there are always some minority of the people who dislike a fact that is
largely appreciated and hailed over. unfortunately, in this case, u r one
among that minority! its like when the whole world hails the SDM success,
some people in bollywood still tend to hate the movie that speaks about hope
and optimism. its sometimes better to ignore the minority.. that's what i've
been understanding in recent times.

because it was in bad quality. also we know that ARR's music grows
  but he does not).

As I listen and re-explore the vast ecyclopedia of ARR's music, hearing the

peaceful and celebratory co-existence struck me as so important in a time
when hatred, ignorance, poverty, and violence threaten our very well being

colorful, beautiful world cultures that surround us and the importance of
maintaining peace and harmony for our well being. As I've said before, his
music represents the best of humanitycolorful, vibrant, tolerant,
 peaceful, going beyond artificial boundaries.

There are only a few things in this life, in this world right now that are
giving me hope for a better future for humanity. ARR's music is one of those
things. At the risk of sounding ideal and naive, why can't we live
peacefully? Why can't we raise our children with peace and tolerance,
teaching them good valuea that promote peacful co-existence and tolerance
with different people and cultures? I know it's complex and it's a problem
that won't just go away by itself.

ARR's music to me represents so much much more than just immediate
entertainment and mood uplifting. The philosophy behind his music, his
message has never been more important to embrace than now.

God, save us from ourselves and may peace be our future.

Listen to the Voice Only Portion of Chandiranai Thottadu yaar
song from Ratchagan, where Hariharan sings that Armstrong portion. You
can clearly listen to that portion having some sort of Ghazal sort of turning
given by Hariharan.

AR Vairamuthu had some discussions regarding usage of that word Armstrong,
wherein VM wanted that word, and AR suggested that it wouldnt suit the tune and

Listen to the attached BGM ( A Humour Portion ) . Actually this is a
scene in the movie, where Sushmitha and her friends go in a car, and
Nagarjuna is following them, and this is a comedy track ... with Vadivelu
and stuff... ( The Movie itself is a Big Comedy . LOL )

 From 1 : 01 to 1 : 12 , You can hear Daud chant with AR voice . While
watching the movie, we can hardly listen to this track, as it gets
overlapped by voices. But you can hear this crystal clear in this BGM. (
 Voiceless )

With AR anything is possible ( Mysterious are his ways )

Rawat, lets understand one simple thing first:
Music and its taste is very highly subjective. Its not something that
everyone can objectively define as to what is good or bad.
can anyone measure likability of music like blood pressure !!
I can't understand why you fail to recognise this fact, instead of using

JA together and during Khwaja mere khwaja as I mentioned that music
is by ARR, he said I did not see anything special (sadly enough. may
because it was in bad quality. also we know that ARR's music grows
  but he does not).

It must be the poorest lyrics by
 Javed.

They are not even bringing a sense of a

Meet the reclusive managers, technicians and singers who make up Team Rahman
T. SELVAKUMAR, 45,
MANAGING DIRECTOR OF
RAHMAN’S MUSIC SCHOOL
In the early 1990s, when Bollywood was just beginning to rave about a
phenomenon, A.R. Rahman
met music programmer T. Selvakumar in Chennai. Both were musicians trained in
the alchemy of
sound, both shared their hopes of setting up their own studios one day. As
Rahman’s stock rose
in filmdom, Selvakumar notched up a reputation in the Indian music industry as
a master
technician. Soon, he got into the business of supplying high-end music
technology equipment.
“That’s when our acquaintance changed to friendship,” says the man who has
helped Rahman set up
his many state-of-the-art studios. To him also goes the credit of setting up
the first and only
Apple-certified music, special effects and film editing technology training
institute in the
country.

Selvakumar was one of the few people who knew about Rahman’s dream of setting
up a music
school. “He wanted to start a school of music technology but I insisted he
couple it with
teaching.” One day in 2007, Rahman decided that the time had come. “And when AR
wants
something, he wants it right away. He asked me if I would manage it for him and
I didn’t see
why I should refuse him,” he says.
A regular day at the school sees Selvakumar taking classes in audio and video
technology and
ironing out numerous administrative hassles. He also continues to deal in Apple
equipment.
Whenever the company launches something new, Rahman is his first client. “AR’s
one of the two
most tech-savvy musicians in India,” he states, proudly. Who’s the other? “You
wouldn’t expect
this: Ilaiyaraaja.”

NOEL JAMES, 48, MANAGER
Over two decades ago, Noel James was playing the piano as a lounge musician at
a hotel in
Chennai when a certain jingles composer walked in. “Rahman heard me play and
asked if I was
interested in working with him.” James agreed. That was the beginning of a
partnership that has
lasted to this day. James has since grown to become Rahman’s manager and chief
public relations
officer. He occasionally assists the composer in stage shows and handles much
of his
coordination — with musicians, clients, talent and even the media. The road to
Rahman, it could
be said, goes through James.
Born and brought up in Mumbai, James got hooked to music at an early age. After
graduating from
Loyola College, Chennai, he got a degree in violin from the prestigious Trinity
College of
Music, London. “I played in a band called Jumping Jewels, handling the vocals
and guitar. That
was before I went solo,” he says. He worked part-time with Rahman initially but
became a
permanent member of the team, singing the jingles and helping him with
production.

Being Rahman’s manager has meant that James does not get much time for his own
music—except
when he plays at church. He has no regrets though. “God sends messiahs to
earth, whether it is
Jesus Christ or Prophet Mohammed. It has been quite a while since He sent
someone. I believe
A.R. Rahman is such a messiah who works through his music,” says James, for
whom familiarity
has only brought more appreciation towards Rahman, the musician and the man.

DEEPAK GATTANIi, 46, CONCERT MANAGER
Behind every power-packed Rahman concert is Deepak Gattani and his team at
Rapport Global
Events. “We manage his live entertainment business but the relationship isn’t a
client-service
provider one,” he says. Gattani first met Rahman through singer Hariharan,
another client.
Since that meeting, he has handled all of Rahman’s tours and performances, and
more recently,
has been managing Rahman’s endorsement portfolio as well.
Whenever Rahman is in Mumbai, Gattani finds himself seated next to him. “But
being with him
doesn’t mean that he’ll talk anymore than he usually does,” he says with a
laugh. “His concerts
have to be technically high-end, with something different each time. Working
for him means
making no mistakes and planning in advance.” Gattani is dogged by international
clients’
proposals for Rahman concerts after his Oscar win. But, as of now, his
priorities lie with
organising Rahman’s first-ever live concert in Kerala, scheduled for May.

S. SIVAKUMAR, 41, CHIEF SOUND ENGINEER
A novice who had just finished a diploma in sound engineering in 1992, S.
Sivakumar got his
first break when he was appointed assistant audio engineer at a reputed studio
in Chennai. The
designation was deceptive. The actual work assigned to the young man was to
stand and wait in
the machine room and change tapes once each roll was over. Then
