Well, to start i would like to say that I am a great fan of rahman's
  music.
I feel he has a unique style which some composers like sandeep chowta
   and
  at
times Shankar ehsaan loy, have tried to emulate, but they sumhow fall
  short
   on quality.
I first heard Rahman's music in Roja, though at that time I was too
   young
to appreciate how good it was at the time. After listening to Dil
 Se..i
  was
really hooked. But what really made me a huge fan of his music was the
  album
'Taal'. For a long time i thought that Taal's depth, diversity and
 scale
would never be matched..and I was almost right
The only person who could outd Taal was Rahman himself. Its been quite
 a
journey for the maestro. Although some of his albums have been quite
pathetic (One 2 Ka four, Doli Sajake Rakhna, Mangal pandey..which was
 a
disaster)..and some which bordered greatness (Thakshak, Saathiya,
Zubeida)..his music has always offered new sounds and melodies. . I
   wasnt
too impressed with Rangeela..tho it was his first purely hindi album.
   His
greatest works include, apart from the ones i mentioend earlier
 Swades,
Lagaan, Meenakshi, Jodha Akbar and several others

A little bit about myself...i was a student of indian classical music
   for
several years when i was younger..thus Rahmans music appealed to me
 even
more. Talking of recent albums, well Delhi-6 is such a great album..it
  ranks
alongside Taal and Dil se in my books.
I sincerely feel that Jai Ho did not deserve an oscar. Being an ardent
  fan
of Rahman I feel that he has made several much better songs in the
 past.
  Im
extremely happy for him, and feel that his award was long due..but It
  would
have been better if he'd got the award for some other song. (eg Luka
  Chuppi
from RDG or Rehna Tu frm Delhi-6...which are both infinetly better
  numbers)

The greatest strength of Rahman is that he is always up to date with
technology involving music. Always experimenting with different
  instruments,
creating new sounds and composing new melodies is what makes him such
 a
winnerThere is a great difference in the Rahman of Roja and
 Bombay,
  and
   now.

Lastly, I would also like to say that apart from Rahman I simply love
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music ..they are No.2 on my list of best
 composers
  in
   the country. ..
I do not understand any south indian language as im from Mumbai, so
  pardon
me if I have missed out on Rahmans Tamil films( I know there are many
 !)

[arr] ARR Trivandrum Concert shifted to Calicut

2009-03-16 Thread Naveen Naushad
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It is ‘Jai Ho... Kozhikode’. The mother of all live
shows, A.R. Rahman Live, the maestro’s first live programme after winning
double Oscars at the 81st Academy awards, will now be staged not at the
Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium here as was earlier planned, but at the
Corporation Stadium in Kozhikode.

The programme has also been postponed from April 14 to May 3. Since April
14 was just two days prior to the polling day in the State, there was a
realisation that it would have been difficult for the police to provide
adequate security cover for the country’s most popular musician. The show is
organised by Keraleeyam - Global Kerala Initiative to raise funds for
HIV-affected children.

For Thiruvananthapuram, however, the euphoria has been punctured.

Expectations had reached a crescendo when a two-member team in charge of
the technical and production aspects of the Rahman show landed in the city
in the middle of February on a one-day recce mission.

The team visited the Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium, the main stage where
Rahman was supposed to perform live. They had inspected the venue, the
ground and the natural acoustics and were generally satisfied.

It is the capacity of the Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium that has now blasted
the capital city’s chances to host the show. Its total capacity, gallery and
the chairs included, is not more than 35,000. In the case of the Corporation
Stadium in Kozhikode, it is nearly 70,000. What’s more, the Corporation
Stadium is fully covered and has efficient flood lights.

To make up for the low capacity of Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium, the
organisers had even thought of arranging live digital projection of the show
in two other stadiums in the city. Even the combined capacity, it is said,
could not have matched that of Kozhikode.

But the crucial factor that led to the choice of Kozhikode over
Thiruvananthapuram was the former’s proximity to Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
If the show is held in Kozhikode, the audience can have a mix of people from
most of the South Indian states. Kozhikode is easily accessible to those in
big cities like Coimbatore, Madurai, Bangalore and Mangalore.

A.R. Rahman, it is learnt, wants his show to be accessible to the largest
number of people. The show is said to be the Madras Mozart’s only show in
the country before the start of his second world tour. This means he will
not be able to perform in any of the Indian cities for at least five years.

The team that had visited the city in February had given an inkling of the
kind of show A.R. Rahman Live would be. ``We don’t know what Rahman has in
mind, this is the first show after the Oscars. He would definitely want to
give this show a completely new feel, something that has never been
experienced before. He might even have a unique theme for the show. It’s
Rahman, anything is possible,’’ Shailesh, who was in charge of production,
said.

``Normally, a Rahman show will have ten big singers and 40-odd musicians.
However, for this show, we feel it might be bigger. We will get a clear idea
after we meet the man himself,’’ he added.

[arr] 100 Best of Rahman - Compilation rules ! Please add !

2009-03-16 Thread Dinesh Vaidya
From all the Rahman songs I have, I regularly prepare a Play-List /
compilation of BEST of RAHMAN for my car MP3 player. Normally one VCD stores
around 110 to 120 songs assuming a 640MB storage capacity.

I do the play-lists based on following rule, Those who are interested to expand
the thread, can add a few practical parameters to refine the final selection of
songs.

Rules
1. Minimum one song from each movie has to be included Fiza has only one
song, but a good one, so no harm in taking it in each compilation.
2. Since ROJA was ARR's first movie and within that Dil Hai Chotaa Sa ( or
Chinna Chinna Aasai - in Tamil ) was the first song to be heard in that movie,
hence this HAS to be part of every compilation !
3. Movies first released in Tamil should get preference in Tamil compilation (
Jeans, Minsar Kannavu, Kadhalan etc ). After selecting original scores in that
language, then only the dubbed versions can be included next( Desam, Taalam
etc ).
4. Instrumental versions can be made into independent play-list so don't add
these into vocal play-list. Same goes for Non-Film albums.
5. Max number of songs per play-list = 100 !
6. For the time being, restricted to Hindi and Tamil only !

So RAHMANIACS ! Make your play list and we will decide how and where to upload
all lists ( I will need AMITH / GOMTESH / GOPAL to help in this matter ).

Best regards

i think humming in Sunta hai (Pukar) is by Sujatha.

anyways some of my favorites:

-Telephone dhun (Hindustani) , Kavita Krishnamurthy
-Lagaan theme (Lagaan), Anuradha Sriram
-Satrangi (Dil se), Kavita Krishnamurthy
-Guzarish (Ghajini), Sonu Nigam

 1) SWARNALATHA -- Sunta Hai(Pukar) , Endhan Vaanin ( Kaadhal Virus)

I definetly feel Swarnalatha ji is the queen of Humming for Rahman ji...!!!
Even her Sinjore song from Kannathil Muthamittal had her brilliant humming

The latest edition of FilmScoreMonthly (FSM) points to a interview by
composer Craig Safan (The Last Starfighter) where he says that he thought
the SdM score was a breath of fresh air and that the other scores...

comparison to other scores. Check out the interview at

In this month's FSM editorial there's the (expectedly) snarky comment from
the editor about the Oscar results-

Now on to A.R. (“Top”) Rahman winning for *Slumdog
 Millionaire*http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/fsmonline/mp3/V14N3/FEATURES/14.3.Jaiho.mp3.
I should have been ready for it, but I really wasn’t. I mean, how many years
can this happen? I never learn. I should stop holding out hope that the best
film music is going to win. But how could I not hope for the best, when
there was such a wealth of great composers writing great scores this year:
Danny Elfman, James Newton Howard, Thomas Newman and Alexandre Desplat—quite
possibly the most impressive foursome of composers nominated in, I don’t
know, 20 years? Well, it’s over now, and I think I’ve truly learned my
lesson. I vow to begin the process of giving up hope for film music at the
Oscars. I trust you’ll all join me. Of course, no sooner do I write that,
than I remember that Dario Marianelli (who happens to be featured in this
issue) won a well-deserved Oscar in 2008 for *Atonement*. But that’s
become a rare exception, and one that doesn’t warrant me getting my hopes up
again. Or does it? Damn you Oscars! I guess I’ll see you next year after
 all…

And in response to a question from a reader-
Q: How cool was the playing of excerpts from the various nominated scores,
especially the close-ups of various musicians, demonstrating conclusively
the monstrous miscarriage of justice in the award to Slumdog Millionaire

*A: I remember commenting during that montage that it felt like a eulogy
for the first four scores, appropriately capped by a handful of banal bars
 of *Slumdog* pop fodder. *

Khwaja song - my impression (Re: [arr] Let's keep in mind the attitudes and expo

2009-03-16 Thread Jahanzeb Farooq
sorry but many points to disagree with.

khwaja song might be holding additional value for muslims due to its
religious connotations, and for general fans it might have got some high
weightage due to the anecdotes of ARR having composed it already and then AG
 using it in the film.

first i would also like to add that though my father did not find it special
(in one hearing), it was/is the absolute favorite of my whole family, including
my mother, wife and younger siblings. so i must say there is something in it
which most of the people are liking. i can agree that part of the reason may be
that muslim connection you mentioned, but only PART of the reason not THE
reason. and about weightage due to ARR composition, i don't agree as like my
family most of the people i have seen loving it don't have much to do with
music or ARR.

Firstly, the song has some 1:20 initial alaaps that are quire boring to say
and kill the entire beauty of song that comes after that.

for me those initial parts are absolute integral to the song, the very beauty
of the song. also i truly love when he keeps singing khawaja jee, kawaja
jee... in the beginning and also at the end of song.

Those ya khwaja ji, moinuddin, gareeb nawaz are without any lyrical or
music value. So, I think the start itself is badly thought up.

same as above.

But then the song starts with lovely music BUT, BUT BUT poor lyrics.

absolutely agree with you. lyrics are one of the biggest culprits in this case
(but only in some places, not all) other being the pronunciation (sadly by our
man).

A typical lack of creativity in the monotonous, logically-built up lyrics
as is usually the case with Javed Akhtar.

 Khwaja Mere Khwaja
 Dil Mein Sama ja
 Bebaso ki Taqdeer
 Tu ne hai sawari

There is no rhyming, no deep devotion. All that dil mein sama ja type of
phrases had been used a 1000 times in cheap ladki-pataao songs in 60s.

i have to disagree big time. i found them very meaningful, devotional and
effective. there is certain beauty in these simple but very meaningful words.

pronunciations are also not clear. that bebaso ki taqdeer tu ne hai sanwari,
has bebaso and tu ne pronounced so pooorly that one has to strain to hear it
and make the meaning of it.

rightly said. and especially taqdeer sounds like takhti (slate) or taqdi.
ARR should have emphasized more on pronunciation.

And then Tere darbaar mein khwaza noor ko mainne dekha has noor pronounced
so poorly by our man himself

i fully agree.

What was so great in mentioning that auliya sar jhukate hain, so what, is
that why you feel respect for him? I think the respect should have come from
within, not due to seeing how others are respecting him.

i don't agree. i must say these lines carry much weight and importance. this is
just a way to express how much respected he is. and btw how we learn to respect
someone in the first place? i think we learn it by knowing the respected person
(what he did that he should be respected) as well as by seeing other respected
persons respecting that person.

and then tu hai khwaja - rutaba hai pyara chahne se tujhko mustafa ko
paya that xxx is still not clear to my aging ears.

i fully agree here. this was the most difficult part. it was not clear to me
what he says until i read the lyrics on booklet.

and lastly that hai mere peer ka sadqa, tera daman hai thama, tali hai bala
 hamari, chhaya hai khumar tera

especially tali har bala was never clear to me, never, until i read the
lyrics. boss pronounced it very poorly.

I don't get what exactly is the concept. No rhyming, no poetry, just some
 words have got hammerred in.

can only agree about the lyrics and pronunciation. besides that for me rhyming
is perfect and singing by ARR is full of soul and spirituality.

I would say that ARR's voice is also not as sweet enough as he is famed for,
there is a rare shrillness, a hollow in ARR's voice

i think his voice suited very well to the song and in fact to all of songs he
has sing. i don't feel any shrillness in his voice.

Listen to the music between 3:40 - 4:05. That Persian sort of. Now, that is
what I call a royal music.

rightly said.

Compare the above two sounds to the sound at 1:20-1:45. Now this 1:20 sound
is what I call a personal sound, lacking royal touch. It is a commoner's, a
poor man's sound, now suitable for a period film.

sorry but i lost you here. did not get how it sounds as personal or poor
man's music.

[arr] Rashid Ali's lucky break

2009-03-16 Thread Vithur
*Rashid Ali's lucky break*

Rashid Ali, of 'Aditi' fame, wasn't even supposed to sing the song that's
made him a big star today.

In an interview to a local website, he said that he was only supposed to
play guitar on the song. He said, I was initially just supposed to play the
guitar portions of the song. Then Rahman asked me to record the vocals and I
just sang it. It all got done in one evening in Chennai couple of years
back. I didn't even hear the end product for a long while.

Ali says that Rahman's decision to get him to sing the song was quite
instant. He says, I've known A.R. Rahman for the past 7 years now. I've
done a few concerts with him. I was in India when A.R. thought why not get
Rashid to sing this song. Rahman is a guy who makes decisions on impulse and
I must add that he has an amazing gut feel about things.” Rashid Ali can now
be heard on the soundtracks of Blue and Jaane Kahan Se Aayee Hai.

Using a bass guitar in this genre was the most innovative idea!!

Its the first time i guess, when some one has thought about using a Bass Guitar
in a Mujra!

It makes the song peppy..and the composition is a classic!!!

Loved the way how ARR has used the voice of Reena Bhardwaj as chorus..Kavitha
krishnamurthy is at her best too...

The other song which is a gem in this album is Rasiya... It
transports me to a different world! I wonder if anyone else in this universe
can sing the same song as Richa Sharma sang!!!
I just love the attitude of this song..
Sarangi notes are divine...sets a perfect stage for the stanza to start...and
stanza doesnt dissapoint either!!!

By Bollywood Hungama News Network, March 16, 2009 - 16:36 IST [image: A R
Rahman] Double Oscar winner A.R.Rahman is known to be a very shy and
introvert kind of a person. Hence, it took us by surprise when we saw Rahman
feature in a video of American hip-hop singer Akon.

The video called '*Beautiful*' features Rahman for just a couple of seconds.
The Music Maestro is seen posing with a bevy of models and smiling in his
trademark coy way. The video also features American pop singer Colby O'Donis
and Canadian hip hop artist Kardinal Offishall

After the double Oscar triumph, one must say Rahman is indeed making his
presence felt on the international music arena slowly and steadily.

shooting of a Vijaykanth's movie directed by Vikraman.

On the way to Sydney from Canberra, we saw noticed a bungalow  inside a

bungalow owner for permission, the owner demanded lots of money. Vikraman
tried to convince him, by talking about the movie, about us, where we are

brightened up! 'Oh.. are you from AR Rahman's town?' and he hugged vikraman.
'You dont even have to pay me to shoot here. You are from the land of

tankbund the same day. We spend the entire next day waiting for Rahmam at
Hotel Viceroy, but destiny neglected it. The destiny was not against my wish
today, I was on the call with one of my friends at the airport when i saw
Rahman sir walking out of the arrivals, again as i said it was destiny's wish
this time, my flight got delayed, Paramount airways from chn to hyd. Few
minutes ago me and my friend were both talking about seeing Rahman sir at the
airport, which I would never say is not coincidence, we never imagined that
at the end of the day we would end up actually watching ARR. Thie happened as
 it is,
Saw ARR sir walking with his head down, suspecting the possibilities I gained
a closer look, was not able to control myself, yelled my friends name in the
waiting lounge “Gaurav Rahman”, ran out of the entry gate, forgetting the
fact that we were at the airport also luggage was left at inside, Rahman sir
was still walking towards his BMW X5, picked a pen from one of the person
standing nearby and rushed towards Rahman sir,
I said “rahman sir, autograph”, sir asked for a paper, I said “on my T
shirt”, Rahman sir refused, I said “please”, he politely said in tamil,
I cannot do it on the shirt, ….we managed to get couple of papers one
”HDFC mini statement” and “a visiting card”.
I just don’t have words to explain my ecstasy, we had a cam phone with us,
never got a thought of taking a picture,
Well, he has been a god for me, never got chance to express it to him.

 Thank you sir,

I respect your opinions. We don't have to agree about our favorites. Rahman's
collection of albums are as varied as the colors and hues on a rainbow. We
will each have our favorite color and hue or shade and that's fine. It's what
makes life excitingto have different viewpoints and opinions. I say, let's
just agree to disagree! It's not worth warring over different opinions and
nobody is going to succeed in changing someone's opinions. Good to hear from

2009-03-16 Thread Jahanzeb Farooq
very rightly said. Rasiya is absolutely awesome. one of my all time favorites.
what a wonderful melody and great vocals by Richa. it alone makes MP a great
album.

though i did not like Vari vari. Kavita has always been my favorite but here
there is too much shrillness in her voice.

2009-03-16 Thread Chord
I have been really concentrating more on Rahman's Tamil works of late and have
been so enjoying revisiting soundtracks I haven't heard in a while.

I need to express my feelings about this song from Sangamam, which really
impresses both intellectually and emotionally. The way Shankar M has sung this
song is absolutely divine. The infectious dholak rhythm with the Mast Qalandar
like melody (not at all copied) makes this song my very favorite from Sangamam.

I love it when the second interlude adds this incredibly infectious ghungru
rhythm, very similar in pattern to the Taal Se Taal mila, Hai Na, Chale Chalo
Mitwa ghungru tracks, taken away, then back again for the final portion of the
song. Just pure magic.

I truly with Shankar M would sing for ARR again.

Heard that ARR said that Mani's next would be kind of similar to the style of
Sangamam (folk, semi classical), so we can really look forward to that.

Am curious to know what everyone's favorite song from Sangamam is.

  For me...

  1) SWARNALATHA -- Sunta Hai(Pukar) , Endhan Vaanin ( Kaadhal Virus)

  4) SONU NIGAM -- Guzarish (Ghajini)

  5) A R RAHMAN -- Marudhaani (Sakkarakatti)

I definetly feel Swarnalatha ji is the queen of Humming for Rahman

Well, to start i would like to say that I am a great fan of rahman's
 music.
I feel he has a unique style which some composers like sandeep chowta and
 at
times Shankar ehsaan loy, have tried to emulate, but they sumhow fall
 short
  on quality.
I first heard Rahman's music in Roja, though at that time I was too young
to appreciate how good it was at the time. After listening to Dil Se..i
 was
really hooked. But what really made me a huge fan of his music was the
 album
'Taal'. For a long time i thought that Taal's depth, diversity and scale
would never be matched..and I was almost right
The only person who could outd Taal was Rahman himself. Its been quite a
journey for the maestro. Although some of his albums have been quite
pathetic (One 2 Ka four, Doli Sajake Rakhna, Mangal pandey..which was a
disaster)..and some which bordered greatness (Thakshak, Saathiya,
Zubeida)..his music has always offered new sounds and melodies. . I wasnt
too impressed with Rangeela..tho it was his first purely hindi album. His
greatest works include, apart from the ones i mentioend earlier Swades,
Lagaan, Meenakshi, Jodha Akbar and several others

A little bit about myself...i was a student of indian classical music for
several years when i was younger..thus Rahmans music appealed to me even
more. Talking of recent albums, well Delhi-6 is such a great album..it
 ranks
alongside Taal and Dil se in my books.
I sincerely feel that Jai Ho did not deserve an oscar. Being an ardent
 fan
of Rahman I feel that he has made several much better songs in the past.
 Im
extremely happy for him, and feel that his award was long due..but It
 would
have been better if he'd got the award for some other song. (eg Luka
 Chuppi
from RDG or Rehna Tu frm Delhi-6...which are both infinetly better
 numbers)

The greatest strength of Rahman is that he is always up to date with
technology involving music. Always experimenting with different
 instruments,
creating new sounds and composing new melodies is what makes him such a
winnerThere is a great difference in the Rahman of Roja and Bombay,
 and
  now.

Lastly, I would also like to say that apart from Rahman I simply love
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music ..they are No.2 on my list of best composers
 in
  the country. ..
I do not understand any south indian language as im from Mumbai, so
 pardon
me if I have missed out on Rahmans Tamil films( I know there are many !)

this song is absolutely divine. The infectious dholak rhythm with the
Mast Qalandar like melody (not at all copied) makes this song my very
favorite from Sangamam.

I love it when the second interlude adds this incredibly infectious
ghungru rhythm, very similar in pattern to the Taal Se Taal mila, Hai Na,
Chale Chalo Mitwa ghungru tracks, taken away, then back again for the
final portion of the song. Just pure magic.

I truly with Shankar M would sing for ARR again.

Heard that ARR said that Mani's next would be kind of similar to the
style of Sangamam (folk, semi classical), so we can really look forward
to that.

Am curious to know what everyone's favorite song from Sangamam is.

There are lots of brilliant songs that AR has never used in concerts.
but I think Yuhin Chala was a perfect one for Concerts.
You have 2 male singers singing , lots of Guitar, Bass.
High energy song.. It would have been wonderful if this song was used in any of
his concerts.
Just my opinion.

Hearing this, i gave her a long list of AR albums and address to music world

Sangamam songs are out of the world. I think its a project which AR did for
expressing his passion for Classical Folk Music, and this also proved to the
world that he can do Classical Folk Music.

My favourites are

2. Varaha Nadigarrai

and all the songs.

The BGMs also rock.

Thanks Chord, and do write more about his Tamil AlbumsI love these posts
