[arr] Slumdog music is modern Bollywood pop, full of digitally sequenced drums

2009-03-21 Thread Vithur
The most high-profile example of this new world-music trend comes not from
Africa, however, but via India: the Grammy-winning hit soundtrack to the
film “Slumdog Millionaire.” Composed by A. R.
Rahmanhttp://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/r/a_r_rahman/index.html?inline=nyt-per,
the music is modern Bollywood pop, full of digitally sequenced drums and
processed vocals, raps, house music and schmaltzy balladry — and yes, some
sitar. A remix of its signature song, “Jai Ho,” was just released with
English vocals by the Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger.

Scoring “Slumdog Millionaire” with Logic: An Interview with A. R. Rahman

By Joe Cellini

If you haven’t yet heard at least some of the score from this year’s
Oscar-winning best film “Slumdog Millionaire,” you must be trying very hard
not to.

Even before it won two Oscars for best score and best song (“Jai Ho), as
well as the Golden Globe and BAFTA awards for best score, A. R. Rahman’s
soundtrack—written on a Mac in Logic Studio—had registered with any
reasonably alert listener during the film’s much-reported rise from
Indian-flavored indie longshot to runaway worldwide hit.

If the soundtrack’s audio reach is in part attributable to the film’s
sweeping success, its musical grasp is strictly the result of Rahman’s
unforgettable melodies and rhythms. In fact, It would be as hard to imagine
“Slumdog” without its script or cinematography as without Rahman’s score.

One of the world’s most prolific and celebrated cinematic composers and
top-selling recording artists, Rahman has scored more than 110 films,
starting with Roja (1993), which was named by Time magazine as one of the
100 best movie soundtracks. He is an equally avid student of cutting edge
music and technology, and he uses both to turn out scores and songs that
seamlessly combine classical Indian and Western sounds with modern vocal and
instrumental styles.

For “Slumdog Millionaire,” Rahman blends Bollywood, hip-hop, world music and
more to not only complement but significantly carry the film’s energetic
plot and audience-pleasing themes. In a recent phone interview, Rahman spoke
about how he used Logic and other tools to create his eclectic, ambitious
score against unforgiving deadlines.
How did you come to work with director Danny Boyle on “Slumdog Millionaire”?

Well, I was really busy last year. I was doing about eight films, too many
really. And I had this email saying “Hey I’m Danny Boyle, I like your work,
and it would be great for us to have you on our film.” I didn’t know what to
answer. But after exchanging several more emails, I met him personally in
Mumbai. And when I talked to him, I had some interest and I wanted to see
the film. He had a first cut of the film already, and when I saw that I was
really interested and wanted to do it. So I left another film to do this
one. I made time for it.
Was your work on this film different than on other films?

In some ways it was different, because it didn’t require as much work as I
sometimes do for other films, but it required high-quality work. Danny
usually uses many composers for a film because he wants different feels in
the music. When you go to just one composer, it usually has one feel. So I
took a clue from that and tried to think about what he might get from
different writers with different sensibilities, always keeping something of
mine in everything I wrote. He thought I wouldn't have time to do that, so
he was just going to have me do a few songs, but I feel you have a
responsibility to the whole movie.

Each track in this film is completely different from the other. The film
needed that, because it follows one person’s life, but in many different
situations and moments from that life. And for the same reason, there are
different cultural elements: some are very strong Indian influences, and
some are very pop influences. If you take all the good things from ten
different soundtracks and put it together, it can make a beautiful
soundtrack of its own.
How long did it take to compose the “Slumdog Millionaire” score?

The initial ideas were all done on this very basic idea of me singing or
playing keyboards and vocals. I’d send Danny a scratch of each idea over
email, several for each cue he’d given me. Danny would listen and tell me
which of the numbers he liked, and he’d start placing them. That was done a
couple of months back. When I had collected all of these ideas, I went to
England, and we spent three weeks together and finished the score. We’d
originally scheduled four weeks, but because Danny decided to mix the film
early, we had that much less time to do it.
Any disagreement about the kind of score you wanted?

Normally when I work with a director I work through his eyes, and through
his vision, and that’s how I worked with Danny. Ideally, he gets excited
when he hears the sound I’ve delivered. At the same time, he challenges me
to produce other sounds and ideas. It made the job so much easier for me
than if I’d done something radically different on my own and then tried to
fit it into the film’s conception and convince people.
Do you typically write both the songs and the score for a film?

Back in the day, it was common in India to be a composer and songwriter; it
was always that way. You would finish the songs in four days, then the
background

[arr] Scoring “Slumdog Millionaire” with Logic: A n Interview with A. R. Rahman

AR Rahman - on Apple Hot News. My Favourite company talking about my
Favourite composer :)

http://www.apple.com/logicstudio/action/arrahman/?sr=hotnews

Cheers,
Srini

Bio

An artist who has redefined contemporary Indian music, A.R. Rahman is
an icon in the world of cinematic scoring and one of the world’s top
25 all-time selling recording artists.

Rahman’s score for “Slumdog Millionaire,” which was critically
praised by Rolling Stone, Time Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, and
The New York Times has sold more than 100,000 copies and was the #1
downloaded album on iTunes.

Widely considered the man who single-handedly revived public interest
in Indian film music in the 1990s, Rahman scored the runaway hit,
“Roja,” directed by noted Indian filmmaker Mani Ratnam. The
soundtrack earned Rahman the Indian National Award for Best Music
Composer, and was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 best movie
soundtracks in the world.

Rahman obtained a degree in western classical music from the Trinity
College of Music, London, and set up his own in-house studio called
Panchathan Record-Inn at Chennai, arguably one of Asia’s most
sophisticated and high-tech studios.

Making Tracks

The Soundtrack

To create the “Slumdog Millionaire,” Rahman used a rich palette of
logic plug-ins on the live instruments and software instrument tracks,
including classic Logic plug-ins like the Autofilter, Overdrive,
Compressor, Fuzz Wah, Enveloper, Stereo Delay, Phaser, Ring Shifter
and Bit Crusher, as well as the newer flagship Space Designer and
Delay Designer to help create the overall sound. Several of the tracks
are very simply mixed in Logic Pro with the Logic Adlimiter and
Channel EQ on the main outputs.

“Jai Ho”

In “Jai Ho,” his Oscar-winning song from “Slumdog,” Rahman made
extensive use of Logic instruments, including EXS24, the EVP88
electric piano, and ES2 synth mixed with a few favorite Logic plug-ins
such as Channel EQ, Bitcrusher, and Guitar Amp Pro. The bassline as
well as the trancey, arpeggiated musical line used ES2 presets.

On the long chorus vocals in “Jai Ho,” Rahman created the robotic,
stair-stepping pitch-bend effect with Logic’s Pitch Correction plug-
in to achieve the exaggerated tuning effect.

School’s In

Rahman’s KM Music Conservatory, which teaches students Western
Classical and Indian Classical Music, as well as Audio Media
Education, is India's first Apple Authorized Training Center to offer
all the students Logic Pro Level 1 Certification classes. The students
at KM Music Conservatory use MacBook or MacBook Pro computers running
Logic Pro.

[arr] [Semi-ARR] Prabhudeva's choreography in Endhiran

2009-03-21 Thread uday kiran
Once again Prabhu Deva is choreographing exclusive dancing movements for
Superstar Rajinikanth in Endhiran.
For Endhiran, Oscar fame A R Rahman had already composed 5 songs and all the
songs will be recorded at a Mumbai studio soon.

Three out of 5 songs have heavy dance movements and Prabhu Deva, Raju Sundaram
and Raghava Lawrence are the choreographers who have been assigned 3 songs.
According to Rajini, only these Three choreographers can understood his body
movements and capabilities better than anybody else.

Upon the request of Rajinikanth, Prabhu Deva has been assigned the introductory
song for Rajini in Endhiran.
The latest we hear is that Prabhu is in Hyderabad Ramoji Rao studio doing a
very difficult song for Shankar’s Endhiran.
The grapevine goes that Rajini is playing a dual role in the film as a
scientist and a Robot. The buzz is that there is a song where two Rajinikanths
will come together for a brief period.

According to the sources, Prabhu Deva had designed two different dance
movements for Rajinikanth in the same song. But the ace dance master and the
superstar has pulled off the impossible, and it has turned out to be a stunning
one!

For “Slumdog Millionaire,” Rahman blends Bollywood, hip-hop, world music
and more to not only complement but significantly carry the film’s energetic
plot and audience-pleasing themes. In a recent phone interview, Rahman spoke
about how he used Logic and other tools to create his eclectic, ambitious
 score against unforgiving deadlines.
How did you come to work with director Danny Boyle on “Slumdog
 Millionaire”?

It made the job so much easier for me
than if I’d done something radically different on my own and then tried to
fit it into the film’s conception and convince people.

because it was in bad quality. also we know that ARR's music grows
 but he does not).
I am a known JA basher so I thought I can say about this song also.

khwaja song might be holding additional value for muslims due to its
religious connotations, and for general fans it might have got some high
weightage due to the anecdotes of ARR having composed it already and
then AG using it in the film.

But as a song, I find khwaja song quite barren and monotonous if I can
say that. It is a sort of introvert song giving a feel that a person
must be singing it within his heart and mind. It is his personal
pleasure. Others would not be able to connect to it.

Firstly, the song has some 1:20 initial alaaps that are quire boring to
say and kill the entire beauty of song that comes after that. It is more
like the sounds generated when a player tunes up his instruments
before starting to really play it up. Such a long wasted part is a sin
in current busy time. Those ya khwaja ji, moinuddin, gareeb nawaz are
without any lyrical or music value. So, I think the start itself is
 badly thought up.

But then the song starts with lovely music BUT, BUT BUT poor lyrics. A
typical lack of creativity in the monotonous, logically-built up
lyrics as is usually the case with Javed Akhtar.

 Khwaja Mere Khwaja
 Dil Mein Sama ja
 Bebaso ki Taqdeer
 Tu ne hai sawari

There is no rhyming, no deep devotion. All that dil mein sama ja type
of phrases had been used a 1000 times in cheap ladki-pataao songs in 60s
and here he comes up with that in a 21st century devotional song.

I would say that the major failure of the song remains in the poor
lyrics. Then, it fails in arrangements of vocals. None of the voices
carry and ethos and pathos. They are just singing an any song, not a
religious song for the most respected muslim personality of Indian
subcontinent. pronunciations are also not clear. that bebaso ki taqdeer
tu ne hai sanwari, has bebaso and tu ne pronounced so pooorly that one
has to strain to hear it and make the meaning of it. Sad that it is our
 man himself.

And then Tere darbaar mein khwaza noor ko mainne dekha has noor
pronounced so poorly by our man himself, and then there are alaaps, and
then the music gives the impression that the line is going to be
repeated, tere darbar mein khwaja - but they drop the line
unceremoniously and begin another line - sar jhukaate hain auliya.
What was so great in mentioning that auliya sar jhukate hain, so what,
is that why you feel respect for him? I think the respect should have
come from within, not due to seeing how others are respecting him.

and then tu hai khwaja - rutaba hai pyara chahne se tujhko
mustafa ko paya that xxx is still not clear to my aging ears. and
lastly that hai mere peer ka sadqa, tera daman hai thama, tali hai
bala hamari, chhaya hai khumar tera, jitna bhi rashq karein beshaq, to
ab hai XXX mere khwaja, tere kadmo ko mere rahnuma nahin chhodna gawara.
I don't get what exactly is the concept. No rhyming, no poetry, just
some words have got hammerred in. It must be the poorest lyrics by Javed..

I would say that ARR's voice is also not as sweet enough as he is famed
for, there is a rare shrillness, a hollow in ARR's voice that I don't
remember having heard in any other song. May be he was trying a new
voice but it didn't suit my ears.

all the internal aalaaps also are confusing, making it a classical song.
They are not even bringing a sense of a trance.

And as I already said once that JA music was a personal music and didn't
reflect the lavishness of the film.

I think I can describe now what I meant by that personal vs lavishness.
Listen to the music between 3:40 - 4:05. That Persian sort of. Now, that
is what I call a royal music, that has lavishness, that has luxury, that
is group music, public music. Also the instrument that stars playing at
the backdrop at about 6:10 and continues till the end of song. that
single instrument is giving a royal touch to the song. That type of
music is what I expected to be everywhere in JA music and background,
but no, we didn't get that. Our man had different ideas about music
suitable for the emperor of India. Compare the above two sounds to the
sound at 1:20-1:45. Now this 1:20 sound is what I call a personal sound,
lacking royal touch. It is a commoner's, a poor man's

Re: [arr] Oh Pappa...ARR's TOP quality arrangement for Raj Koti

2009-03-21 Thread Prasad Varma
The tune composed by the duo Raj - Koti is heavily inspired by Axel F's Miami
Vice Theme. However the interludes are not.

http://www.amazon.com/Axel-F-Miami-Vice-Themes/dp/B000QO2MY2

In a very emotional T.V. interview after the Oscar win, Koti mentioned that
ARR  who worked for the duo in the 80s as a keyboardist, had played a major
part in this song.  Also the fact that Raj Koti used Jojo as a singer is a dead
give away. Jojo BTW was the singer for the band Roots that ARR was a member of.
Jojo hardly sang any other Telugu songs before that. ARR also mentioned about
his association with Raj - Koti in a few interviews

With due respect to the arrangment skills of Raj - Koti, there were a few songs
whose arrangements were highly spohisticated compared to their normal output,
the same way a few of Anu Malik's movies (Ashoka, Janneman) sound 'different'.
I strongly suspect ARR's heavy hand in these. (Examples 'Padaharella Vayasu'
from Lankeswarudu, All songs from Trinetrudu)

I do agree that we can only surmise the extent of ARR's involvement though.

[arr] A R Rahman squabbles with reporter

2009-03-21 Thread uday kiran
Nellore, March 20: Oscar winner and popular music composer A R Rahman allegedly
squabbled with a media person at Venadu dargah in Tada mandal on Thursday while
the latter was taking his photographs.

Rahman is a regular visitor to the dargah and reached there at about 1 pm on
Thursday from Chennai. When a vernacular reporter who belongs to the village
tried to take photographs of Rahman, he reportedly instructed his followers to
take away the camera from the reporter.

There was a heated discussion between the scribe and supporters of Rahman for
sometime and finally the camera was given back. Rahman immediately left the
place after offering prayers. A large crowd gathered to have a glimpse of the
musical
maestro.

  Dear Rawat,

The exact reply for your query i think is - We are not so knowledged
 to analyse ARR's music.

AR's music is divine and we cannot judge divine power. We dont have enough
knowledge to judge his music. Thats the truth.

  in fact we watched
JA together and during Khwaja mere khwaja as I mentioned that music
is by ARR, he said I did not see anything special (sadly enough. may
because it was in bad quality. also we know that ARR's music grows
  but he does not)..

It must be the poorest lyrics by
 Javed.

Also the instrument that stars playing at
the backdrop at about 6:10 and continues till the end of song. that

Just before ppl start jumping to conclusions and assumptions, please try to
understand about the site siasat.com and its reports, their insights and
outlook.
It might have been true to some extent that AR expressed discomfort posing for
camera lenses. But he isnt a person to squabble absolutely not to the extent as
reported.

Nellore, March 20: Oscar winner and popular music composer A R Rahman
allegedly squabbled with a media person at Venadu dargah in Tada mandal on
Thursday while the latter was taking his photographs.

Rahman is a regular visitor to the dargah and reached there at about 1 pm on
Thursday from Chennai. When a vernacular reporter who belongs to the village
tried to take photographs of Rahman, he reportedly instructed his followers
to take away the camera from the reporter.

There was a heated discussion between the scribe and supporters of Rahman for
sometime and finally the camera was given back. Rahman immediately left the
place after offering prayers. A large crowd gathered to have a glimpse of the
 musical
 maestro.

[arr] Salaam Bombay Dreams - if u r a rahmaniac, buy and treasure it

2009-03-21 Thread Thulasi Ram
the promos for this salaam bombay dreams DVD was shared in this group couple
of weeks before and it really impressed me. i cant restrict but to get the
DVD from an online store and the money i've spent for it is definitely worth
it. i just completely watching the entire DVD. it has four sections: the
making, creative team interviews, sights and sounds and bonus material.
really, this DVD is a must have for any rahmaniac. the audaciousness of the
musical and the approach the team took to present this musical in a
magnanimous scale is simply mindblowing. they call it A R Rahman's Bombay
dreams and Andrew has been pivotal role in promoting ARR to the western
audience as the score that ARR has given for BD deserves it. shekhar
kapoor's tid-bits in the DVD compilation adds nice edge to this DVD. ARRs
interview and songs recordings are a treat to watch and cherish. the way the
song sequences are choreographed and shot are shown with abundant passion.
the highest point is that when ARR is congratulated the Queen. really
awesome.

kudos ARR... a great, memorable chapter in ur life that every musical lover
would cherish.

[arr] Vithur or anyone got BGM's of Bombay??

2009-03-21 Thread Sath Murthy
I love to hear the BGM's of Bombay Does anyone have the entire one for
the movie?

I still remember the review by Vikatan that mentioned edaivelaiku piragu, AR
Rahmanin athiradi pinnani esaiyudan padam vegu vegamaga pogirathu (Second half
of the movie goes fast paced with Athiradi BGM's by ARR).

There is a scene in the movie.. where Manisha comes to Arvindsamy's house to
get something.. she stands near the staircase and Arvindsamy will be looking
from the top Whenever Manisha looks Arvind.. there will be a carnatic
swarams and when Arvind looks Manisha .. there will be a ghazal or someother
kind of bgm (i am not sure about this part), but those bgms were so
mesmerizing.. i watched the movie more than 4 times just for ARR.

Vithur, Please share it buddy.. if not the whole movie.. atleast for the scene
i mentioned above.

Many Thanks in advance
Sath Murthy.
