[arr] AR RK Shekar Biography - another version
I got this as forward email from someone. Not sure if this has been posted earlier. I don't claim all these info are true. Cheers, Bergin Not many know that AR Rahman, the Oscar award winning Music composer often hailed as the Mozart of Chennai is a Brahmin by birth. Read this excellent background information that not many of us know, despite all the publicity he has reaped after his consequent in winning the double Oscars from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences in the US. The Malayalam Motion Picture Industry have always portrayed Rahman's father, RK Sekhar as one of their own which is the popular impression until Tamilnadu claimed Rahman as one of their own sons. Read the interesting bio: A.R.Rahman was a Palghat Iyer Brahmin who migrated to Chennai. His name was Dilip he also studied in the famous Padma Seshadri School where Brahmin Students were dominant. AR Rahman, born in 1966 as Dilip Kumar is the son of RK Sekhar and Kasturi. His Grand Father Rajagopal Bhagavathar is from Kizhanoor near Chennai and was a popular Harikatha kalakshepam expert. His Father was a Malayalam movie music director. He scored music for just 22 films but was a music arranger and composer for over 100 Mlayalam films. Apart from having composed many beautiful hit songs, it is said that his was the genius behind the success of many famous composers and their famous songs. It is said that R K Sekhar had a rare mastery over the harmonium. Blessed with a deep knowledge of Indian traditional music as well as western music, he was the music arranger for Devarajan,Dakshinamurthy, A.T. Ummer, M.K. Arjunan and others. When Salil Chowdhury composed music in Malayalam for films like Chemmeen, R K Sekhar served as his assistant and music conductor. In his early days when Ilayaraja played Combo Organ and Guitar for the songs of Salil Chowdhury and Devarajan, it was R K Sekhar who arranged and conducted it. R K Sekhar who learnt the grammar of music by and large on his own, garnered the framework of Carnatic music from Dakshinamurthy. It is said that even composers like S.D. Burman, recognizing his talent in arranging music, invited him to assist him in Hindi film music. He was the music composer for music director Kumar's first film Neerkumuli, a Tamil hit directed by K Balachander. At his age of 31, R.K. Sekhar, married 17 years old Kasthuri. Their wedding was conducted in Tirupati and they lived in Chennai. Kanchana, the daughter was their first child. Then came Dileep their only son, followed by the girls Bala and Rekha. R K Sekhar had the ear and special talent to recognize the potential of new sounds of music instruments. It was his habit to travel to Singapore to understand the latest trends in music instruments. He introduced to South Indian music the early synthesizers like Univox and Claviolin. In those days only international music bands had them. R K Sekhar introduced Balamurali Krishna and S.P. Balasubramaniam to Malayalam film songs in the film Yogamullaval. R K Sekhar had introduced many new singers to Malayalam film industry like Brahmanadan, etc. A music fanatic and a workaholic, R K Sekhar worked day and night rehearsing songs, arranging music and recording songs without sparing time for either food or sleep. He literally lived in the recording studios with only tea and dry bread for food and an occasional nap. As a result, he contracted chronic ulcer. Finally, he had to move from hospital to hospital for treatment as the disease reached terminal stage. His assistants went and waited in hospitals to write down the music scores as he dictated them from bed, amidst excruciating pain. In 1977, R K Sekhar passed away in his 42nd year. Dileep, the now Mozart of Madras, was just eleven then. R K Sekhar's daughter Kanchana is also a good singer and today her son GV Prasad is a music director to reckon with and has made music for hits like Kreeedom, Veyil,Unale Unale,Pollathavan, Seval, Vellithirai and, of course, Rajini's Kuselan. His father, Venkatesh is a business man. Rahman's mother became Rahana when his entire family converted to Islam. There are many positive traits Rahman has picked up by ancestry. Like his Father, Rahman was innovative and ready to absorb and blend foreign music to his original score. He like his father was always a keen ear for new, fresh talent. He probably started living his father's dream but has surely surpassed it, long ago. The memories of my father remain my inspiration. I have seen famous film music personalities and film directors of those years waiting for my father in the verandah of our house. Father used to work for eight or nine films at a time. I think he died of excessive exertion. Beneficiaries have recounted to me how my father helped them, how he created opportunities for them. I was very moved by all that On another occasion A R Rahman said: My

Re: [arr] Is this really a song from Mani Ratnam's Raavan
Hmm... The sound quality seems to be crystal clear, which means the chances of this being a song from Raavan is unlikely... Ofcourse, if the person who posted it is directly involved with ARR's studio or Music Company, there might be a little chance of he leaking it. Disbelievable, but still... may be. Now coming to something interesting: Raavan has Maniratnam-ARR-Gulzar combination. The lyrics of this song start as 'Pairon Pe Jannat Hai' The same combo's first film Dil Se, had the song Chaiyya Chaiyya, whose opening lines did have 'Paaoon ke Neeche Jannat Hogi'. Strange!! The `divide and rule' policy of the East India Company is firmly entrenched. It is a testing time for all concerned when a new rifle, the Enfield, is introduced for use by the sepoys, the Indian soldiers in the British army: the cartridge is coated with a mixture of cow and pig fat. This has to be bitten before being loaded, an abhorrent practice for both Hindus, for whom the cow is sacred, and Muslims, who regard the pig as unclean. One soldier, Mangal Pandey (Aamir Khan), challenges this policy, but in the process he risks losing his life, his love Heera (Rani Mukherjee) and his close (homoerotic?) friendship with a sympathetic British officer, William Gordon (Toby Stephens). Mehta's account of the Sepoy Mutiny, or `India's first war of independence', which led to the collapse of `the Company' and the imposition of direct British rule, is an ambitious epic with its heart in the right place, a story grounded in truth. It is engaging but sadly fails to move the emotions. This is largely due to a script which tries to cram in as much critique of the period as possible: the inequity of the caste system, the horror of suttee, the iniquitous opium trade, the evils of Empire. This leaves little room for the various characters to develop. That said, it is rousing entertainment with strong performances from its beautiful leads. AR Rahman's rustic compositions add to the appeal of a technically well-crafted film which is a must-see for Indophiles. Comparisons to Khan's earlier release, the superior Oscar-nominated `Lagaan' (2001), are inevitable, but this is a worthy, intelligent follow-up. http://satyamshot.wordpress.com/2009/03/23/time-out-capsule-on-mangal-pandey/ -- regards, Vithur

Hi All Rahmaniacs, I read this mail saying - The security gaurd saw A R Rahman's photo in the car, and he told your car doesn't needs to under go security check as you are Rahman's fan Don't you guys think this is too much.. Its good to be ARR's fan, but keep it at that level. Being a Rahman fan doesn't fill our belly!! Music is for us to have a good time at our leisure, so keep it at that level. I accept that A R Rahman is a genius when it comes to music and ask him, he would definitely attribute that to his hardwork, intelligently making moves, applying to right academies to appreciate his music - like Academy Awards, and associating with best in the industry so that all of them benifit by that. So, all that is his strategy, which we too should learn and apply in our respective fields. There is no reason for us to go on mentioning in every mail that I am a Die hard Rahmaniac. Just say I like his music. Instead of saying You know what? Today I was very lucky, I saw HIM at the airport You know, the security guard said you are Rahman fan so you can go without security check kind of things are very stupid. I am sure that even A R Rahman would not expect these things from us fans. If you ask him personally, he would say what stupidity his fans do. Thats what he told in a Sugar-Coated way during Felicitation of ARR by Chennai Music Directors Association that Don't abuse anyone's music, every music director has his own way of doing things Same way he would also say about the stupidity happening here Finally, I TOO AM A DIE HARD FAN OF A R RAHMAN. I RESPECT HIM FOR HIS TALENT. But guys, dont act stupidly!! Discuss about his compositions, * discuss what you liked in it, * let the other person also remind you of other composition that you might have forgotten, * try to enjoy the nuances of his music, * focus on lyrics, * musical instruments used, * the way he switches from one Raga to other, * get more technical, * teach other who don't know the basics of music like Ragas, * discuss those things, * share your renditions, * let others give their feedback - These kind of healthy discussions shud be there. Not saying I saw him here, there, kind of things. Vithur and other co-ordinators please understand my point and explain it to other Rahmaniacs. One final thing, by just talking about the genius of A R Rahman, nothing good is going to happen to us. We will just keep seing how high Rahman goes each day.. He has shaped his life very well. He is planning for what he wants and he is achieving that. But what about us? When will we be like that So just admire his talent, aspire to be someone like him, or if music is not your cup of tea, use that inspiration to become better in you field. Just use his acheivements as your motivation and ofcourse his music will be on you side to support you (morally). IF WE DO THIS, NO ONE WILL BE MORE HAPPIER THAN A R RAHMAN HIMSELF, because he will he happy for he inspired many for their own development and progress. [arr] Since my school days, I have been a great fan of A R Rahman - Singer Karthik
Singing seems to have been destined for him. The first time Karthik met the redoubtable A R Rahman, he was told by the latter to pursue a career in singing. That statement, coming from his idol, was enough to convince Karthik to give up his dream of a corporate career and start learning music again. After many chorus parts and backing vocals, Karthik is now widely acknowledged as a fitting solo voice. Although he did well with Chori pe chori (his duet with Asha Chosle for Saathiya), it was ‘Behka’ from Ghajinithat made Bollywood take notice of the promising singer. In an interview, the singer whose trained in several music styles, expresses his keenness on working with Bollywood composers, contributing to an IPL album and shifting to Mumbai. How did you get a break in playback singing? Since my school days, I have been a great fan of A R Rahman. Singer Shrinivas happens to be my friend’s cousin, and I realised the only way I could meet Rahman was through him. So I thought, ‘Why not meet him?’ When Rahman and I met, he asked me to sing a few lines. After hearing me sing, he appreciated my talented and suggested that I pursue a career in singing. I was completely shocked to hear that from him. His statement changed my life; I began taking classical lessons again. At one point of time, Rahman wanted a fresh voice so Shrinivas called me and I recorded for the song’s chorus. That is how my career began. For how long did you have to struggle in the industry before you got your first solo number? I have done choruses and backing vocals for many songs and I love it. It teaches you a lot. Also, when Rahman got to know about me, he promoted me very well. I have had the chance to sing in nearly all his films, whether Tamil or Telugu. Everyone has been calling me to sing. So I would say that god has been kind to me and I did not have to struggle too much. Which was your Bollywood break as a playback singer? I sang for the film Pukar, starring Anil Kapoor, but the song was not used in the movie. Tell us about the training you have undergone. At four, I started learning Carnatic music. But I quit after a year because I was too shy to sing. About 10 years later I enrolled at the same place again, revised the whole thing and then started learning Urdu ghazals from Munna Shaukat. Then suddenly, I got inclined towards Hindustani sangeet so I learnt that too from Shriram Parsuram. I trained under him for many years and I think that is what shaped my career in singing. Have you ever recorded for a song only for it to be given to another singer later? Yes, and I even felt that it was my best song ever. I had sung the track ‘Apne Des Ki Mitti’ for the movie Bose. But when the audio CD released, I found Sonu Niigaam’s voice on the track. I was shocked but I realised that Sonu could hit the high notes really well and probably that’s why he was asked to do it. One has to learn from these experiences and move on. If not a singer, what would you have been today? I have a degree in chartered accountancy and had always wanted to be in the corporate world. But singing was my passion so I got attracted to this field. I would have been working as a CA had a career in singing not worked out. You have worked with several South Indian music directors but no one from Bollywood. Why is that? I want to work with everyone in this industry. See, as my career started with regional songs, I worked with these directors. But now, I have done a few songs with Bollywood directors as well. I worked on the film 13B with Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. I sang the track ‘Chhote Se Shahar Mein’. I have many more projects coming up but I can’t give out the names because they are still being recorded. Which of your solo songs do you think has left its mark in the industry? I would say it is ‘Chori Pe Chori’ from Saathiya, which I sang with Asha Bhonsle. As for my solo songs, ‘Behka’ from Ghajini was a big hit that made me popular in the industry. I got a few offers after ‘Behka’. Even though your songs are popular with the public, they do not know the singer behind them. Do you think it is tough for new singers to become known faces? I agree with that but I think that one needs to constantly churn out hits for him/her to come into the spotlight. I know that media interaction is also very important, and that’s why I am planning to shift base to Mumbai. Who do you think is your toughest competition? There is no threat or competition but I love Sonu Niigaam and Sukhwinder Singh. Naresh Iyer too is a very good singer. Singing is my passion as well as my job so I feel that it is better if I just sing my song and do my work rather than try to compete. Have you ever had a clash of opinions with a music director? No. I don’t think it’s my business. Today’s music directors are very supportive and cooperative; they listen to singers’ views. You are a trained classical singer. Do you feel that this type of music is losing ground amongst the new generation? There are

'Guitar' Prasanna the man (debuted to play master pieces in July Madham Vandal for Rahman) being so modest and ace musician in exploring stuff exactly same as what Rahman does, could be even more different. He gave brief introduction about himself. He said two mantras for the music students. + You should think out of the genre (means that you shouldn't bound yourself to a particular set of genres), music is beyond everything. A genre is just a vocabulary, you should know how to use it for the maximum benefit. Thats it. + Always we should interpret a music which we play/sing. You should take the essence of a particular piece of music and reproduce it as yours, give different colors in your style. He explained musical stuff extraordinarly. He went to core physics to explain what music is all about. KM students stunned @ Guitar prasanna's depth of knowledge, exploring attitude, personality and performance he gave yesterday. He played a piece which contains more than 10 genres I guess (might be lot more, I know very few). The way he fused, and made the people to realize what is the mistake that they are doing. Ranjith, I believe you are rude in saying that the mail sent by Dinesh was stupid. There was nothing wrong in what he said, as he expressed his happiness, and this is the best forum for expressing one's own love, experience about what he / she feels about AR and his music. AR doesnt like this in particular. Everyone has the freedom to express his own opinion, and if you dont like anything, the best reaction would be to remain silent. Silence is ARR's greatest expression and we can also follow the same . I dont know what happened, that triggered you to write such a mail. This Yahoo groups is dedicated to AR and his music, and can be used as a medium for sharing love, happiness, peace which are the outcome of hearing AR music. I really didnt find any stupidity in Dinesh 's mail. In fact, just by seeing AR's poster in his car, the security guards allowed his car to pass through, and this is a sign of what people believe in AR and on people who genuinely love him and love his music. I think you are irritated by some happening in your life and I would suggest you to hear some songs and cool yourself. lets leave this topic here, and keep going... Lets not fight or blame at anyone. Agree with you on most points, but I don't think its proper to call people who call themselves as Die-hard AR fans as 'stupids', felt kinda harsh. Sure there are a lot of other things to discuss here, but people are just sharing their 'personal experiences' with AR's music, and if that's what motivates them in life to do better, let it. I, personally think it was stupid of the security guard to have not checked Dinesh just coz he was carrying an AR pic. Rather than being excited I'd be disappointed at the lack of importance given on security in India especially at this point in time. And yeah, lets imbibe what rahman has tried to teach us all through these years, he'd be more happy than if you like his music for that. --- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, Ranjit k yseri...@... wrote: Hi All Rahmaniacs, I read this mail saying - The security gaurd saw A R Rahman's photo in the car, and he told your car doesn't needs to under go security check as you are Rahman's fan Don't you guys think this is too much.. Thanks Vithur for Bombay's BGM. Can u pls share RDB Swades BGM too ? I would like to give the translation of the verses which r played during the scene in the movie B'bay where Manisha leaves the house with the Holy Quran in her hands. The verses r from the opening chapter of the Holy Quran 'Surah Fatiha' and its compulsory to recite this verses in each every Namaaz (prayer). It will also give us some idea what our man (ARR) recites during his 5 time prayers. Bismillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahim . (In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.) [arr] En Swasa Katre title song is pure bliss
Great pleasure to revisit the classics and I love to share it here. One of the most soothing numbers by our man. The beautiful bass with ride cymbal and the haunting electric piano loop makes it so haunting. The best part is the ending when ARR uses the veena along with the female carnatic vocal alaapsgives me chills each time!!! One of the most beautiful and haunting outro portions in any ARR song, similar in beauty to the outro of Rehna Tu. I know there are other beauties in the album too.
[arr] Re: Harmony creation
Hi Gopal, ARR's harmonies and melodies are based on various scale systems from the West or raagas from India. There are books on these scales and raagas if you are interested in theory. Learning to play an instrument, as I have, is one of the best ways to learn about scales and raagas. But, even if you don't play, you can still learn and appreciate. ARR's knowledge of Western classical music really aids him in creating mindblowing harmonies, which of course, is part of his genius. --- In arrahmanfans@yahoogroups.com, Aakash shahaakash...@... wrote: Well Gopal, As per my knowledge, scales are the main factor for any kind of music. I think everyone here love ARR not just for his music. We also love him for the great person he is. It is what that makes Rahmaniacs special. It#39;s true that music does not feed you but Rahman#39;s music emotionally does that... The guard incident is a little too much. I agree. But using the word stupid might hurt certain people#39;s feelings here. What you should have done is actually tell the guy who wrote about it to tell the guard not to do such thing again... Everyone wants to get a chance to meet him. When one of do, we share the experience. The other#39;s feel as if they themselves has met him. Its a satisfaction we get here. We feel happy to those who were. You can#39;t call that stupid... Just voicing out opinion. Hope I didn#39;t hurt anyones feelings here... [arr] A globalising saga on BS - I wonder where the author of the book got the info!
http://www.business-standard.com/india/news/a-globalising-saga/352357/ There’s a lovely story about a group of AR Rahman fans who spent many sleepless nights coding software so as to be able to create a montage of thumbnail images of all his album covers, which formed the contours of his face. Acknowledging their perseverance, Rahman and his team decided to collaborate with them to organise concerts worldwide, evolve new ways to distribute music and tackle piracy. It’s anecdotes like this and trivial bits of information on the film industry in Bombay that make this anthology an interesting read.
