if only one can understand the pain involved with the work done by another
there would be no room for arguing on basis of language and any other matters.
Unfortunately AR's own followers don't understand how AR has made Chennai, TN,
Tamizhian, an Indian proud. Understand one thing if AR was to work only in
Tamizh there would have been no day where a Tamizh word would have been spoken
in the stage where Oscar was presented.

[arr] Blue Movie Revew | 3 Songs wasted in the movie | Conversation with Rahman

2009-10-15 Thread Farzad Khaleel
Hey All,
It was really a happy day for me yesterday and also a sad day. I have got an
exclusive chance to chat with Rahman where Rahman participated in an event
with two other Musicians for a one and half hour conversation show. The show
was like Meet and Greet Rahman where hardly 50 persons were present. The
venue was Emirates PAlace Hotel, Abu Dhabi where Blue premiere was also
screening. Ive posted this in the group and ive also got more than 10 passes
with me for the show.

But the mail got in the group late, so people couldn't drive in and come. In
an exclusive chat with fans, I got more than 10 minutes to have conversation
with him, A short description

Me : How can you include a Tamil song in a Hollywood Movie, Sir ?
ARR : Its like Music is a Global Anthem, and it hasnt got any Language
barriers. The directors had belief in me, so I could experiment anything I
want. :)

Me: How would be your feeling like, you had put more effort in a movie and
the directors waste those songs and also the movies goes flop in Box Office
?

ARR: Yeah it hurts and it happens. We never knew the movie will be a hit or
flop when we are doing the music. And yeah failures is a part of life but
that balances my life and my career.

Me : Have you checked rahmaniac.com ?
ARR : No, am yet to do that :P

Me : Which is your favorite musical instrument ?
ARR : Now its African Mont..something like that ( I dont remember the name )

After the conversation he gave me an autograph and left the hall where the
show happened. Later met up Akshay, Lara, Antony, Zayed, ARR in the Red
Carpet of the premiere. Harldy some Arabs were there, and they dont even
recognize the stars.

In the premiere, when ARR walks in he got a Stand up Evasion and was treated
most beautifully than any other stars.

The movie was OK but it had no importance for songs. The movie is much
predictable and it hasnt got any extra ordinary thing where people has given
the hype to. More over *I was eagerly looking in for the BGMS, but it harldy
had no BGMS. The Lady in Blue BGM *was awesome. But no other. I personally
felt that this movie hasnt influenced ARR much. So the movie doesnt also
deserve the songs from ARR. They want it big and they have added in ARR.

Rehnuma : Played in the Opening Credits
Blue theme : Same as in the promos
Chiggy Wiggy : Same as in the promos
Bhoola Tujhe : Came at the right time. It suited much.
Fiqraana : End Credits

Yaar Mila tha : Not in the movie

Anyhow the movie is Average. Hope youl enjoy some Katrina, some Lara and *not

The strength for the Times concert was 30K plus. You cant

Hi all,
The Mausam and escape track was a mind blowing one. And the fusion from Taal to
Ringa Ringa was amazing too. Many people started leaving during the break
thinking it was the end of the show.  From no where chithra appeared and gave
two splendid songs. Konjum Nilavu was an unexpected track with a female rap
added to it. I was expecting a song from gajini but didnt expect aye bachoo.
Rahman sir sang Fiqrana, obviously it was nice. The finishing touch was jai ho
fused with vande maataram.
The only thing that disappointed me is the sound. The TOI concert had a very
good sound when compared to the yesterdays concert. There was lot of ups and
downs in the sound.Rahman sir mic was not working when he started Rehna tu, the
starting beat was goin on and on later he managed telling about the mood of the
song. We
miss Sridhar. :( There is no one else to match him.Sivamani was asked to stop
cos of the time constrain(not so sure about this..) At the end of the show
rahman sir said something like this not his exact words we made a lot of
mistakes which you would have not recognised, we will correct it next time and
will rock with another show

Hi Friends,

The concert was went well... so many disappointments. .. there is only one
thing made everyone to be there till the end.. thatz Rahman. Chennai crowd
slightly disappointed with the playliste they have performed. 80% hindi
songs... however everyone enjoyed completely. My biggest disappointment is the
quality of sound and the stage display settings. Minus points are still
there... but I would like to share something good. I have recorded (only audio)
the live version of Mausam Escape track.

Rahmanji was started playing the piano with some melody... after a minute i
felt that something big coming to come out... when the sitar joined first along
with the piano... I doubt that.. finally I realised the track when the electric
guitar joined... at one point of time they started playing Mausam Escape
WOW!!! that was a BIG surprise for crowd. Luckly I have recorded the music with
my mobile.

I would recommend all the Rahmaniacs to listen to this track from
http://www.mediafir e.com/?t5xnyyzyn mu . If anyone recorded this with good
qulity audio... PLEASE upload it and post it. Thanks in advance...

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/entertainment/hollywood/news-interviews/Kylie-Minogue-takes-India-by-storm/articleshow/5126789.cms

India is already doing “Chiggy Wiggy” with Kylie Minogue, although the film
“Blue” for which she delivered it is yet to be released on October
Kylie Minogue (Reuter Photo) More Pics 16.

Kylie’s meaningless cacophony “Chiggy Wiggy” in collaboration with Oscar winner
A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire) has become a chartbuster and household word
in India, a signature line for “Blue”, set-up new trend for Bollywood music,
and taken up plenty of column inches.

Tipped by its leading star Akshay Kumar as “most dangerous film ever” and by
media as the “most expensive film in the history of Bollywood”, underwater
thriller “Blue” also stars Sanjay Dutt, Katrina Kaif, Lara Dutta, and
pint-sized Grammy winner Kylie Minogue as herself. This is Kylie’s first silver
screen appearance after “Moulin Rouge!”.

Shot in Bahamas and Thailand, its cinematography has been handled by Pete
Zuccarini (Pirates of the Caribbean), action scenes by James Bomalick (The Fast
and the Furious), and sound mix by Oscar winner Resul Pookutty (Slumdog
Millionaire).

Rahman was quoted as saying: By working with Kylie, I was able to create
something truly unique for fans-the music fuses the cultures of mainstream pop,
Hindi, and Bhangra.

Acclaimed Indo-American statesman Rajan Zed has welcomed the West-East musical
collaboration this film and Kylie offered and invited other world composers to
explore joint ventures with India’s musicians. But in the mad rush, India
should not forget its rich music heritage which went back to pre-BCE Hindu
scripture Sama-Veda, and includes Dattila (190 AD), Amir Khusrau, Naik-gopal,
Puramdaradasa, Tansen, Pundarika-vitthal, Govind Dikshitar, Ramdas,
Venkatamakhin, Tyagaraja, Pandit Bhatkhande, etc., Rajan Zed, who is president
of Indo-American Leadership Confederation, said in a statement in Nevada (USA).

I'm sorry Murthy, I did not know that Gopal was doing it for fun. I really
thought it was a genuine news on the first instinct of reading it. I thought
the same when the fake Blue list and the Aish singing in Ravana news came
out. And believe me, maybe for many of you, it was fun, (guess you must have
known Gopal's true intentions) but all these fake news spreading around the
group was just not funny to me...

Nevertheless, my outburst on Gopal was truly uncalled-for. I should not have
jumped to conclusions without knowing his true intentions. I have apologized to
him personally but I believe that I owe an apology to the rest of you as well.

But on a lighter note, I wish to request that in future, a notification be

Again, I'm terribly sorry if i had hurt anyone's feelings with my previous post.

*You will be performing in Calcutta after more than six-and-a-half years.
Has the Rahman sound changed in this period?*

I have never changed my sound intentionally. Most of my soundtracks reflect
what film I am doing. It's only that. It's never like I want to beat this
sound or I want to do something better. But I do change myself. I do not
want to do the same thing. I want to keep my job interesting to me.

There have been reports that you have been hiding in Los Angeles…

The three months immediately after the Oscars were hard to handle. Everyone
wanted to felicitate me and have me over at social functions and
congratulate me in ceremonies. I went to Los Angeles and went back to my
music. Now, life is back to normal.

*Why did you choose the Vince Vaughn rom comCouples Retreat as your first
 Hollywood project afterSlumdog Millionaire?*

I got that offer before I got all the awards for *Slumdog Millionaire*.
Vince Vaughn came to me much before the Oscars. He just saw the movie and he
became very emotional and he said: I want your music for my next film! I
was contemplating whether to accept the movie or not. Then after the Oscars,
I went and saw the movie. I felt that it wasn't a musically sympathetic
movie but it was a comedy. And nobody would ever think that a person who
did *Slumdog *would do a comedy next. And I just wanted to experience the
whole process of Hollywood. It was a great experience.
Vince Vaughn and Malin Akerman in Couples Retreat: Vince became very
emotional and he said: `I want your music for my next film!'

*What makes it a great experience?*

You know just the opportunity to go and work in studios where *Mary Poppins
*and *Star Wars *were recorded, it's a great feeling. Also, it was fun
working with Vince and with the director of *Couples Retreat*, Peter
(Billingsley). He's a new guy and it was good.

But *Couples Retreat* the film has been very poorly received there and the
reviews say your music has been under-utilised…

It is a comedy… it's not a film where there were extraordinary musical
situations. It's also a complicated movie about four couples, who all have
resolutions. And some of the score, which is significant in the film, is
licensed stuff… like Ennio Morricone's *The Good, The Bad and The Ugly*…. I
know that this would happen but I had the opportunity of doing a great CD.
And the CD is being liked by everyone.

*Of the work that has been offered to you in the West, are they all asking
 for aSlumdog-like score from you?*

No. Because they would never want to repeat the same thing. I am in a very
extra-ordinary situation where I can do songs and I can do background
scores. I have not been typecast… like He's a background score guy or He
can only compose songs. So, I have been trying to expand on that. Even in *
Couples*, I have done three songs and then I have also done the background.
Dave Stewart: He is a dear friend... we are trying to put up a band
 together.

*Do you have a wishlist of producers or directors you want to work with?*

No, I don't want to have a wishlist. Because some things look very small in
the beginning and they become bigger in the end. Like *Slumdog*. And some
things look very big at the beginning and end up really small. So I don't
 have any wishlist.

 *Was Slumdog ever small?*

Honestly, I would have never sent the score to the Oscars. The makers did. I
composed the soundtrack in three weeks flat and didn't think that it would
go on to do what it did.

*Do you think it was all because of that one song, Jai ho?*

When I saw the film, they had put another song (Shankar Ehsaan Loy's *Aaj ki
raat *from*Don*) and all that dancing was part of the film. At that time, it
looked like a mockery of our song and dance. But when they used it in the
end credits with *Jai ho*, it looked really nice. See, *Jai ho *became *Jai
ho *because it was apt for the film, not because it was a great song. It was
the right song and that's why it worked out so well.
Kylie Minogue: She was very fast... it was all finished in three hours!

*So, you haven't given any brief to your Hollywood agent?*

He is always surprised by my decisions. He said: It's (*Couples*) a comedy!
Don't do a comedy! I said, why not? So, it goes like that.

*How do you plan to balance your work here with your work there?*

It's difficult choosing. I want to keep that little chain of interest of

The movie was OK but it had no importance for songs. The movie is much
predictable and it hasnt got any extra ordinary thing where people has given
the hype to. More over I was eagerly looking in for the BGMS, but it harldy had
no BGMS. The Lady in Blue BGM was
awesome. But no other. I personally felt that this movie hasnt
influenced ARR much. So the movie doesnt also deserve the songs from
ARR.

Hope youl enjoy some Katrina, some Lara and not
much ARR.

There are many speculations and assumption based threads which ppl post as if
nothing can be true except that with authenticity of connections with ppl. A
post of this kind will not spoil anything. I dont see him mocking AR neither he
is abusing his works. We are not in a war room to be only serious. If you
filter out many threads there are very few which are genuine with information.
Its personal to enjoy and not to enjoy, even AR is very good at humor.

@ Gopal Anandan,

pls add a notification to your subject such that those who wish to enjoy your

It's just that we all expect too much from you almost all the timeSome
of us who attend all of your concerts find the track list repetitive, but

Someone here said its ok to have fun once in awhile... sure... but not with the
tracklists. Its pathetic and its not funny. Many people actually DO believe in
them because this group has a great, great reputation. This 'fun' is spoiling
that reputation. If its fun to lose the respect and reputation, then go ahead,
make more 'funs' here.

There are many speculations and assumption based threads which ppl post as if
nothing can be true except that with authenticity of connections with ppl. A
post of this kind will not spoil anything. I dont see him mocking AR neither
he is abusing his works. We are not in a war room to be only serious. If you
filter out many threads there are very few which are genuine with
information. Its personal to enjoy and not to enjoy, even AR is very good at

watched it the other day. i am glad that ARR didn't do it. it is a very average
film, certainly AG's weakest, and a potential flop. it started off good but
became boring and boring with each rashee. furthermore 3+ hours film with 12-13
songs is too much. and it would have been very painful to see ARR's 12-13 gems
going wasted, double of what was wasted in Yuvraaj or Delhi 6. Sohail Sen did
an okay job but nothing special. also he sounds too much like SEL.
to me ARR's decision of not doing this film was very right. and i must say he
should be careful of AG's film next time. this guy's work is becoming more and
more mediocre with each film.

 Telegraph picture

*Why did you choose the Vince Vaughn rom comCouples Retreat as your first

 Hollywood project afterSlumdog Millionaire? *

I got that offer before I got all the awards for *Slumdog Millionaire* .

(Billingsley) .

 Conversation with Rahman

 Hey All,

It was really a happy day for me yesterday and also a sad day. I have
got an exclusive chance to chat with Rahman where Rahman participated in
an event with two other Musicians for a one and half hour conversation
show. The show was like Meet and Greet Rahman where hardly 50 persons
were present. The venue was Emirates PAlace Hotel, Abu Dhabi where Blue
premiere was also screening. Ive posted this in the group and ive also
got more than 10 passes with me for the show.

But the mail got in the group late, so people couldn't drive in and
come. In an exclusive chat with fans, I got more than 10 minutes to have
conversation with him, A short description

Me : How can you include a Tamil song in a Hollywood Movie, Sir ?
ARR : Its like Music is a Global Anthem, and it hasnt got any Language
barriers. The directors had belief in me, so I could experiment anything
 I want. :)

Me: How would be your feeling like, you had put more effort in a movie
and the directors waste those songs and also the movies goes flop in Box
 Office ?

ARR: Yeah it hurts and it happens. We never knew the movie will be a hit
or flop when we are doing the music. And yeah failures is a part of life
but that balances my life and my career.

 Me : Have you checked rahmaniac.com http://rahmaniac.com ?
ARR : No, am yet to do that :P

Me : Which is your favorite musical instrument ?
ARR : Now its African Mont..something like that ( I dont remember the name )

After the conversation he gave me an autograph and left the hall where
the show happened. Later met up Akshay, Lara, Antony, Zayed, ARR in the
Red Carpet of the premiere. Harldy some Arabs were there, and they dont
 even recognize the stars.

In the premiere, when ARR walks in he got a Stand up Evasion and was
treated most beautifully than any other stars.

The movie was OK but it had no importance for songs. The movie is much
predictable and it hasnt got any extra ordinary thing where people has
given the hype to. More over *I was eagerly looking in for the BGMS, but
it harldy had no BGMS. The Lady in Blue BGM *was awesome. But no other.
I personally felt that this movie hasnt influenced ARR much. So the
movie doesnt also deserve the songs from ARR. They want it big and they
 have added in ARR.

Rehnuma : Played in the Opening Credits
Blue theme : Same as in the promos
Chiggy Wiggy : Same as in the promos
Bhoola Tujhe : Came at the right time. It suited much.
 Fiqraana : End Credits

Yaar Mila tha : Not in the movie

Anyhow the movie is Average. Hope youl enjoy some Katrina, some Lara and
 *not much ARR.*

[arr] Making my son sing was not planned: Rahman

2009-10-15 Thread Bivin Chandra
Not one to give vent to his emotions, Oscar winner A.R. Rahman is pleased at
the way his Hollywood venture Couples Retreat has been received. The great
challenge for Rahman was in bringing the spirit of the island which couples
visit on holiday. He was happy he had succeeded in creating music catering to
movie's mood.
It is one thing to compose a song for a Tamil movie but how did he manage the
Hollywood flavour? Rahman said the idea germinated when the makers looked for
some exotic stuff to go with the mood of the island's visitors. It was not too
difficult, he said, as once the Tamil words were finalized in sync with the
music. This is the first lyric penned by Rahman.
Another first for Rahman was the marks allotted to his work. “They have a
system to judge the inputs and have animated discussions if the track would be
popular with audiences, an idea worth emulating in the Indian industry,” said
Rahman.
On his little son rendering the 'Nana...' number, Rahman said it was unplanned.
It just happened when he was looking for  a voice to suit the mood and music.

[arr] Re: Releasing the Raavan Track List!

2009-10-15 Thread ravi
So alleging AR being reluctant (neglecting was the word used)to do Tamil movies
and somebody claiming about AR rejecting great movies because of money factor
was a healthy discussion? Wasnt that much pathetic?
just because of personal liking and disliking claiming some of his scores as
one of the worst or drop down add repute to our group. I felt such posts where
ppl judged AR losing his touch.
Such is our reputation that AR himself has to clarify, it wasn't a matter to
celebrate for me rather embarrassing being the part of the group who failed to
understand AR. And felt more convenient to write stories of his mistakes and
thats obvious when somebody works under tremendous pressure to meet up
expectation.

The group also witnessed how fans here who celebrated AR when he was approached
for CR later had commented why did he accept where music wasn't a scope when
few reviewed the movie as not as was expected?

I dont understand why would somebody believe it so much to post it elsewhere
for a movie which is still being shot and the music is nowhere to be expected
for the next couple of months. Anybody who would have read the list felt it was
a fake.ppl love being in publicity and just to earn that if somebody has
blindly copy pasted it, who is to be blamed. I agree Gopal A could have added
a disclaimer in that email. I wish he does that in future.

You said it perfectly.

what Gopal did was for fun, and adding a disclaimer will only take away a
good laugh :) . This group has become way too serious and some times, from
seeing how often these disappointment mails pour in, i feel this has become
a Hate Group.

And, even after some fans calling his music repetitive, soul-less and even
copied, he still takes time to write a few lines to our group to explain
what is happening. That is because he cares and listens to his fans. but his
fans only care about what they want from him.

Such is our reputation that AR himself has to clarify, it wasn't a matter
to celebrate for me rather embarrassing being the part of the group who
failed to understand AR. And felt more convenient to write stories of his
mistakes and thats obvious when somebody works under tremendous pressure to
 meet up expectation.

The group also witnessed how fans here who celebrated AR when he was
approached for CR later had commented why did he accept where music wasn't a
scope when few reviewed the movie as not as was expected?

I dont understand why would somebody believe it so much to post it
elsewhere for a movie which is still being shot and the music is nowhere to
be expected for the next couple of months. Anybody who would have read the
list felt it was a fake.ppl love being in publicity and just to earn that if
somebody has blindly copy pasted it, who is to be blamed. I agree Gopal A
could have added a disclaimer in that email. I wish he does that in future.

Re: [arr] You know you are a true Rahman fan when...

2009-10-15 Thread pratap
Highlighted my personal favorites! Super duper true stuff. It's like someone is
telling me about myself! haha

You have a peculiar taste in music, which does not
necessarily have to match the taste of the masses. You have a good sense of
melody and rhythm and can tell good
music from average. You appreciate good music, regardless of who it
comes from. You can go on for hours talking about Rahman when someone
makes a mistake of asking you about your favorite music. You are never content
and are always hungry and thirsty for
more from Rahman. You have had many euphoric moments in your life.. connected
with Rahman's music. You agree that an average Rahman song is better than the
best
most of the other can churn out.Regardless of how the World finds Rahman music,
you think
Rahman makes music just for your ears. You genuinely believe that
Rahman somehow knows what kind of music you unconsciously crave and
then magically delivers that to you.Your most prized collection in your entire
music collection
is your Rahman collection, whether it's in form of cassettes, CD's or
hard-disk space on computer or ipods. You sometimes feel this bliss, a kind of
feeling that you are
in heaven, when listening to Rahman's music. If the World was to go back to
using the barter system again,
you wouldn't mind trading a 1000 non-Rahman songs for a single Rahman
song. You share this special bond with Rahman which is impossible
to describe in words, let alone explain it to others.Your friends/family fail
to understand why you listen to
music in a language that makes no sense to you, whatsoever. But, a
few weeks later, you totally understand why your friends/family are
humming/singing the very song they don't understand and were puzzled
about you listening to it.You are part of the Rahman Yahoo! Group or Orkut A R
Rahman fans
Community and visit it at least
once a day.You take pleasure in new group (community) members arguing with
likes of
Gops and Vijay, when they come out with some Rahman info/news.You are tired of
new member joining the group and inquiring
about and referring to the fake Ekyam Satyam. You too hope to
listen to the real one someday, if it exists somewhere. You can talk to any
other Rahman fan and connect with them
instantly. You have a deep desire to meet Rahman in person, and know
deep in your heart that one day your dream will come true. You have thought of
it many a times and tried to come up with
a plan of what you would do? How would you react? when you actually
meet Rahman. You can find the challenging task of solving a complex
problem rather easy compared to the daunting and difficult task of
coming up with your absolute top-10 Rahman favorites.Any criticism of Rahman is
hard for you to digest, because
most of the time it comes from people that haven't heard enough of
Rahman and yet have no problem talking about him.Your blood pressure tends to
rise when an average listener
sings praises for other MDs(especially Anu Malik, Harris J, and the
more recent and annoying Himesh). When it comes to R.D. Burman or may be
Illayaraja, you tend
to put an end to the conversation by saying... No doubt, Illayaraja
is the greatest, but I think Rahman is even better... because it's
true. (Self-fulfilling prophecy?)You are a select few in the country that are
familiar with
obscure terms such as BGM or Interlude etc. And furthermore, you
are a rare breed of fans that actually collects and listens to
these BGM and Musical bits used in commercials. You can listen to an hour of
non-stop Rahman interludes and
guess over 80% of them right. You eagerly wait for each and every Rahman
release, you set
very high expectations for each album, a day after the release you
will bash the album as below-average, a few months later you will
hail the same album as a masterpiece and one of your personal
favorites. You suffer from this rare condition where... you wake up from
your sleep, humming or singing a Rahman tune, involuntarily. You
realize the condition is severe when you randomly shout out a Rahman
tune you haven't heard in a long time. You may forget to take your dose of
medication but you can
not forget to get your daily dose of Rahman. You set high expectations of
Rahman, and are honored and
touched that he cares about you and works hard to satisfy you.You know and
realize that Rahman is potentially the most
creative composer to ever live in India, and may be even the World. You love and
respect Rahman, the human being and not just
Rahman, the composer. (EXTREMELY TRUE!!!)

I slightly have a different view. Rahman is not the same to others as he
is to us. People who pay hefty prices and travel all the way to have a good
experience should be treated with that experience - Good ambience,
Pyrotechnics, good mix and performance.

We might think that ARR is doing us a favor through his music. But, for a
non-ARR fan (in the sense of dedicated yahoo group type fan) that is not the
case. They are buying an experience and if it fails, it affects the
reputation of the provider.

I am not saying ARR is responsible, but any failure from any of the
musicians, singers, organisers, crowd managers, anybody, its ARR's
reputation at stake.

There are way better event management groups and I seriously hope ARR signs
with the best.

Highlighted my personal favorites! Super duper true stuff. It's like someone is
telling me about myself! haha

You have a peculiar taste in music, which does not necessarily have to match
the taste of the masses.

You have a good sense of melody and rhythm and can tell good music from
average. You appreciate good music, regardless of who it comes from.

You can go on for hours talking about Rahman when someone makes a mistake of
asking you about your favorite music.

You are never content and are always hungry and thirsty for more from Rahman.

You have had many euphoric moments in your life.. connected with Rahman's music.

You agree that an average Rahman song is better than the best most of the other
can churn out.

Regardless of how the World finds Rahman music, you think Rahman makes music
just for your ears. You genuinely believe that Rahman somehow knows what kind
of music you unconsciously crave and then magically delivers that to you.

Your most prized collection in your entire music collection is your Rahman
collection, whether it's in form of cassettes, CD's or hard-disk space on
computer or ipods.

You sometimes feel this bliss, a kind of feeling that you are in heaven, when
listening to Rahman's music.

If the World was to go back to using the barter system again, you wouldn't mind
trading a 1000 non-Rahman songs for a single Rahman song.

You share this special bond with Rahman which is impossible to describe in
words, let alone explain it to others.

Your friends/family fail to understand why you listen to music in a language
that makes no sense to you, whatsoever. But, a few weeks later, you totally
understand why your friends/family are humming/singing the very song they don't
understand and were puzzled about you listening to it.

You are part of the Rahman Yahoo! Group or Orkut A R Rahman fans Community and
visit it at least once a day.

You take pleasure in new group (community) members arguing with likes of Gops
and Vijay, when they come out with some Rahman info/news.

You are tired of new member joining the group and inquiring about and referring
to the fake Ekyam Satyam. You too hope to listen to the real one someday, if
it exists somewhere.

You can talk to any other Rahman fan and connect with them instantly.

You have a deep desire to meet Rahman in person, and know deep in your heart
that one day your dream will come true.

You have thought of it many a times and tried to come up with a plan of what
you would do? How would you react? when you actually meet Rahman.

You can find the challenging task of solving a complex problem rather easy
compared to the daunting and difficult task of coming up with your absolute
top-10 Rahman favorites.

Any criticism of Rahman is hard for you to digest, because most of the time it
comes from people that haven't heard enough of Rahman and yet have no problem
talking about him.

Your blood pressure tends to rise when an average listener sings praises for
other MDs(especially Anu Malik, Harris J, and the more recent and annoying
Himesh).

When it comes to R.D. Burman or may be Illayaraja, you tend to put an end to
the conversation by saying... No doubt, Illayaraja is the greatest, but I
think Rahman is even better... because it's true. (Self-fulfilling prophecy?)

You are a select few in the country that are familiar with obscure terms such
as BGM or Interlude etc. And furthermore, you are a rare breed of fans that
actually collects and listens to these BGM and Musical bits used in
commercials.

You can listen to an hour of non-stop Rahman interludes and guess over 80% of
them right.

You eagerly wait for each and every Rahman release, you set very high
expectations for each album, a day after the release you will bash the album as
below-average, a few months later you will hail the same album as a masterpiece
and one of your personal favorites.

You suffer from this rare condition where... you wake up from your sleep,
humming or singing a Rahman tune, involuntarily. You realize the condition is
severe when you randomly shout out a Rahman tune you haven't heard in a long
time.

Anthony D'souza, director of *Blue*, said in an interview that it was
important to keep the running time of the film under two hours (1.57hrs to
be precise) so that the audience didn't get bored. D'souza couldn't have got
it more wrong. Blue could have easily been shorter, or even not have been
made at all.

Okay, agreed that India hasn't seen an action film of this scale before. The
canvas is huge, the cinematography pretty good and the making slick. Money
has been spent like water and that's the closest the film comes to its
theme.

But even as *Blue* tries to emulate every Hollywood film in the action
genre, it hardly matches up to any of them. It instead ends up,
embarrassingly, like a poor B-grade film from the west. *Bad Boys* anyone?
Nope, this one's just bad.

If you've seen the promos, you roughly know the plot. It's another matter
that even after the film ends, you don't really know what the plot was after
all. Way back in 1949, the British decided to return some of India's jewels
back to the country and dispatched them on a ship called Lady in Blue. The
vessel sunk, untraced, in mysterious circumstances and its contents remained
lost.

Now businessman Aarav (Kumar, addressed annoyingly as Sarkar) wants to find
the 'treasure' the ship carried and can only do so with the help of
friend-cum-employee Sagar (Dutt, addressed annoyingly as Sethji). Everything
else pertaining to the plot is incidental and as pointless as the premise of
the film itself.

Director D'souza needs to know that an action film needn't necessarily have
close-up shots of a woman's cleavage and derrière repeatedly and pointless
gun firing and chase sequences.

It definitely should not have lengthy verbose scenes, especially when the
film rests on such a flimsy plot in the first place. You pray for the story
to move on, but Gulshan - played by Rahul Dev - mouths dialogues like*
Apnanapan
hai* and such others at a leisured pace, while scenes seem repetitive.

And after all that talk about the 'treasure hunt', all that the actors do in
the end is dive into the sea and its right there waiting for them. How in
hell did no one else ever get their hands on all that gold!

Among the 'jewels' you take back home with you is Akshay Kumar saying *Hamein
treasure hunt pe jaana hoga* - or something to that effect - like it's a
trip to Lonavala and back.

For the actor himself, the film is a new low. Every time you step in to
watch a Kumar film now, you are expecting something nonsensical, but you
hope it at least entertains you in the bargain. After disappointing you
every time in his last - we've lost count now - few films, this one just
makes you hope that he'll finally realise that a film also needs a script!

Sanjay Dutt looks bloated, and no effort goes into ensuring that the paunch
is somewhat hidden. He, however, puts in a decent effort. Zayed Khan is as
far from being cool as the amount of effort he puts into looking it. Lara
Dutta provides the appropriate eye candy to save the film from being a
complete washout.

It's not that a film like *Blue* needs an Oscar-winning script or even
scenes that justify the action. Most escapist entertainers of this variety
rely on a racy script that keeps you on-the-edge and breathtaking action
that blows your mind away. This film, sadly, has neither.

So what's the point, you say? Here, it seems like the idea was to make the
Hindi film industry's 'costliest' film, make a lot of noise about it, get
people in theatres during the holiday season and have a 'Hit' on hands.

Hopefully, the next time, all that money would be used to make something
that's at least worth watching. This one isn't. Except, if you're looking
for a spoof.

[arr] ET reviews Blue movie

2009-10-15 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
Movie Review: Blue

Print EMail Discuss Share Save CommentSingle page view Text:
Director: Anthony D'Souza
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Lara Dutta, Zayed Khan
 Rating: **

Blue is the perfect example of a good 100 crores going down the drain (sau
karod paani mein daal dena). Sure the film promises some brilliant visuals and
underwater images never seen before in Indian films thanks to one of the finest
underwater cinematographers in the world (Pete Zuccarini). But sadly the credit
list literally lacks the mention of a screenplay writer.

The scene opens in post-independence era of 1949 when a ship from Britain to
India is bringing back its long looted riches. Strangely as per goofed-up
geography, the shipwreck happens in Bahamas (that figures nowhere on the course
of voyage). The treasure lies deep inside oceans untouched for more than half a
century.

The scene opens in present-day Bahamas with good-friends Aarav (Akshay Kumar)
and Sagar (Sanjay Dutt) fishing and fighting together. The latter addresses the
former as Sarkar for being filthy-rich. But the former more aptly addresses the
latter as Sethji (not for his possessions but perhaps his paunch). The fatigued
seth with a potbelly pet romances a bikini babe (Lara Dutta) half his age.

Sagar's brother Sam (Zayed Khan) is estranged from him for strange reasons. He
races bikes rapidly and romances babes vapidly. Fleeing from mafia men, he
returns to Big Brother house. By interval point you only relish the sight of
fish but sadly get to see no meat in the plot.

In absence of a sane screenplay, the viewer is subjected to burnout action
sequences and bike chases. By the time the oceanic treasure-hunt initiates in
the climax, you see blue since the film is 'in deep water'. Sadly the authentic
aquatic life is put to no active use as even the sharks seem to be harmlessly
herbivorous. Rather the regular hero-villain combats are replicated in the
oceans to no groundbreaking effect with the marine life playing passive
spectators to the proceedings.

Mayur Puri's casual conversational dialogues sans any cinematic significance
and the minimal background score fail to induce depth to the drama. The
supposed suspense in the narrative is almost obvious from the start. A R
Rahman's musical score is plain passable this time. The art design by Narendra
Rahurikar is decent. Laxman Utekar's cinematography is fascinating as he
captures the Bahamas beaches beautifully in his lens and uses effective close
up frames on the cast. Designer Rina Dhaka deserves special mention for styling
Lara Dutta at her sexiest best in those white, red, pink and bejeweled bikinis.

The introductory action sequence of a shark attack has been credibly
choreographed by James Bomalick. But after a perfect startup for an underwater
adventure, the action takes the regular 'road' until the climax while the
adventure isn't scripted thrillingly. Blue has munificent footage of marine
world which has been stunningly shot by underwater expert Pete Zuccarini
(Pirates of Caribbean). But the conventional storytelling doesn't elevate its
outcome beyond the visual brilliance of a National Geographical documentary.

Akshay Kumar is decent. Zayed Khan isn't bad but doesn't go beyond his regular
self. Sanjay Dutt looks dreary and uninterested. With a perfect toned body,
Lara Dutta looks desirable and adds grace to her liberal beachwear, not looking
one bit vulgar. KatrinaKaif gets no scope. Rahul Dev is regular. Kylie
Minogue's item number comes out of the blue.

Director Anthony D'Souza deserves applause for testing water with entering an
entirely new territory, not attempted before this side of Pacific. The
logistics of such filmmakingare extremely demanding and he hasn't compromised
on the standards. But his storytelling certainly lacks the finesse which could
have made this project a more entertaining fare.

Blue doesn't glue you to the seat. Rather its corniness can make you see red.

On the other hand, the music is memorable; it’s the first American film scored
by last year’s “Slumdog Millionaire” Oscar-winner A.R. Rahman

[arr] Khalid Mohammed reviews Blue movie - In Shallow Waters

2009-10-15 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
http://passionforcinema.com/blue-movie-review-in-shallow-waters/

Blue
Cast: Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Kumar, Lara Dutta, Zayed Khan, Sharks, Bahama butts
Direction: (not much of it) Anthony D’Souza
Rating: One star..and that’s being generous
Sharks, there go those shucks! Ulp, excuzee, pardon, sowie. Shucks there go
those sharks!
And hey, they’re smooth-as-slate grey. Their teeth aren’t visible (must be
senior seatizens).
Plus every guy who owns a scuba-diving suit swims past them, happily, as also
past National Geographic-like anemones, crayfish and fish life with silver
fins. Fin and games?
Forget it. As soon as the credit titles of Blue, directed by former adman
Anthony D’Silva, are over, you’re already seasick. A couple of reels later, you
even want to cry out loud, “What on earth are you guys doing? Do you take us
for ninnies?” Absolutely contemptuous of the audience’s intelligence, this one
has more ‘action’ of sorts on terra firma, than down there 20 leagues under the
sea. Strangely, ceaseless footage is expended on Zayed Khan riding a designer
bike zippily through the expressways of Bangkok. Squawk.
Next: Vroom, this Dhoom-addicted dude strikes up a multi-million dollar debt,
all because he took a fancy to this Smiley (Katrina Kaif, vapid) wearing a
diamond lipling. Meanwhile, you’ve been subjected to a heap of weird
information. ThatKabir Bedi stepped out of the sea in 1949, wearing a freshly
laundered naval officer suit. Then poof, he vanished like Aladin’s genie.
Meanie.
Many many many many many years later, lobster fisherman Sethji (Sanjay Dutt,
paunched out) and his buddy, Aarav (Akshay Kumar, in a Sam Tytlerish goatee)
are upto some fearsome faltugiri. They box in a ring. Ping. And Sethji’s
wife—or live-in gal (Lara D) – mumbles something about oceansful of cash to
research marine life. Expensive, expensive.
Got the drift? It’s difficult to since the screenplay (if there was one),and
the shot takings are conceptually as shallow as the powder-blue sea. A
hurricane is announced but never shows up disappointingly. Every thing is all
too childishly easy. When crisis calls, Sethji just takes off for an interlude
of treasure hunting.Yippee do.
For sure, the hunteroos organised at college annual functions are much more
demanding. Out here a ship that holds costume jewellery is quicky detected in a
ruined hull (a nude mermaid statue looks freshly sculpted though). After a
frown or two, roguish Rahul Dev and his oriental dakus are banged-banged to
extinction. And if you think this is a spoler, it isn’t. Much more pop con is
to follow. Hellow Akshay Kumar, predictably, hogs the end credits. Surely,
Kylie Minogue who does a Chiggy Wiggy at the outset could have been brought
back for a Tickly Wickly?
Essentially, this Blue movie (!) is awfully directed – disjointed, senseless
shot taking and tiresomely lit like the time Sethji and Aarav converse at a
dark oceanfront near-replicating a scene in Omkara. Shots through champagne and
wine glasses are hilariously retro. Ditto those sudden pans to women’s butts
which you thought had ended with Ram Gopal Varma’s posterior past. The editing
is either too senseless (a gunfight through walls is insanely amateurish) or
tempo-killing like the song sequence over a listless montage and flashbacks.
Unfortunately, Akshay Kumar engages in anti-women dialogue once again after
Kambakt Ishk, asking smarmily, “Can I ride you?” He’s also racist, comparing a
session with a black and a white woman to plonking piano keys.Besides, couldn’t
he have been prevented from saying “blew” instead of “blue”?
Zayed Khan is not worth remarking upon. Lara Dutta is purely decorative, her
sex appeal outdone by all the beach blondes and brunettes the camera keeps
salivating over. As for Sanjay Dutt, arguably this is his career-worst.
Bottomwhine: Blue is one bloomer of a movie. Don’t even think of all the crores
spent on this kiddish enterprise. That’ll just leave you with one helluva
sinking feeling.

[arr] Blue movie review - An innovative film that deserves to be lauded

2009-10-15 Thread $ Pavan Kumar $
An innovative film that deserves to be laudedby Joginder TutejaCast: Sanjay
Dutt, Akshay Kumar, Zayed Khan, Lara Dutta, Katrina Kaif, Kylie Minogue
Director: Anthony D'Souza

When the makers of a film proudly proclaim their product to be at par with
their Hollywood counterparts, one is bound to be sceptical. More so because
Blue is an action film, that too set underwater, which is not just a first in
Bollywood but also a rarity in Hollywood.

So does Blue set new standards for Bollywood action movies? Does it actually
get into the underbelly of the sea and show a world hitherto unexplored? The
answer is yes.

Let's put it this way - Blue may not be the mind-blowing commercial action
thriller that you would have ever seen. However, it certainly is the most
innovative attempt that deserves to be acknowledged and lauded.

Action is truly the USP of the film and keeps the momentum going for Blue due
to which one doesn't quite miss the presence of a solid storyline.

From first till the last frame, it's the amalgamation of action and an unknown
world (under the sea) which brings in a novelty factor.

For those hunting for a storyline, Blue actually begins and ends at the basic
synopsis level. Mr. Richie Rich Akshay Kumar wants a treasure to be explored
and entices his employee and friend Sanjay Dutt with tempting offers.

Dutt is reluctant to take that dive into the sea even though his girlfriend
Lara Dutta and brother Zayed Khan do present him enough reasons to take the
plunge. Eventually he relents and the journey of Blue begins. Simple.

There are five key action sequences that keep the pace up for the film. Each of
the three bike sequences featuring Zayed become better and better and in fact
his introduction a la 'Fast and the Furious' is something unique for an Indian
film.

The boxing ring sequence featuring Sanjay and Akshay does hint of Broken
Arrow, though it works in establishing their characters. Most importantly, the
entire underwater hunt sequence is a breathtaking affair.

Anthony D'Souza has a strong eye for visuals and that shows. Technically,
whether it is camerawork or sound, Blue bears an international feel. Whether
it's Sanjay or Akshay, the revelation about their past isn't quite hammer
strong, even though convincing.

Moreover, even though the film is a multi-starrer, one does expect Akshay to be
on the forefront. However, for a change, a film featuring him does allow equal
screen space for other actors as well.

As for Lara and Katrina Kaif, their presence is required to make the film look
good and in that aspect, they do well.

In a nutshell, Blue is made for those who want pulsating action, innovative
stunts, glamour and some unbelievable moments that defy logic.

It mainly caters to the youth that just want some non-stop action in those two
hours while keeping James Bond movies in mind.

The kind of films where bikes are meant to race through traffic, cars are meant
to explode, women are meant to bring on a glamour quotient, villains are meant
to be suave, action is meant to belong to never-seen-before variety and
technical aspects are meant to be superior to the best.

Partially agree with it. Looking at my ipod, playlist count of Blue isnt
impressive.. so for me, yes it is one of his least heard albums. Why? I'm not
sure yet.. because even though I liked most of the songs (may be except Yaar
Mila Tha), I dont really see myself listening to Blue after few (lets say) 3-4
years as I am still crazy about Meenaxi, Swades etc and can listen to them non
stop for 5-6 hrs anyday.

@ chart - nice to see Blue at # 1, but (IMHO) London Dreams at # 10 isnt fair.
That album is much better than Khanna, Wanted, Dil Bole Hadipa, Wake Up Sid etc.
