There is no exact release date. There never has been ! If we have been
following AR and his music, its high time we also realise to have patience
and not to expect the CD until it hits the stores.

Gautham Menon is back again with yet another sizzling and highly anticipated
flick, Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaayaa (VTV), a romantic movie produced with an
international audience in mind. Silambarasan and Trisha Krishnan adorn the
leading roles. The music is scored by the Oscar Winner, the one and only,
A.R.Rahman. 'Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya' is the first audio launch in Tamil for
Rahman after he brought home Oscars and the Golden Globe and expectations are
high among audiences. The lyrics are by Thamarai and the editing done by
 Antony.
The film was shot in many picturesque locations including the beautiful
Malta islands near Italy and various locations in the U.S.A including the Big
Apple, New York City, and various scenic spots in Pennsylvania and New
Jersey. The audio of the film first rocked the public on a calm Saturday,
18th December in London at a glamorous function presided by A.R.Rahman
himself with playback singers giving live performances to a full theater. It
was received very well by the public and is sure to raise the anticipation
levels. “The music is really great, so are the visuals in the songs. I expect
it to be a blockbuster” – says Shanker Koladi who attended the audio launch
 in London.
The movie is scheduled to release on 12th February 2010, very close to
Valentines Day. Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaaya has seven songs as part of its music
album. The music will be available exclusively on Sony Music and will be
released on January 7th, 2010 internationally. Two95 Entertainment, Inc has
bagged the distribution rights and will be releasing the movie in major
cities of US, Canada Europe on February 12th. Since it is releasing during
the Valentines season, distributors are expecting a huge opening for VTV.

I didn't quite get how you plan to threaten AR's privacy but the rest of the
logic does not hold - not being able to afford/access a commercial product
does not bestow the license to steal. But that's quite beside the point.
It's not like any of us don't download the music anyway - it's just a
business decision that the producers are making - the cost of producing and
distributing a CD revenues from selling them The pirated mp3s will get
downloaded regardless, just that in this scenario, the producers lose less
money. All of a. quality of digital music b. worldwide accessibility to
digital distribution mediums like Amazon and c. the diversity of such
options will only improve with time for those, like you, that have the noble
intent of putting your hard earned money behind the creative work. The
interim will dissatisfy many but you just have to live with it - after all
this is the music 'business', that's the operative word.

Re: [arr] Blue Telugu

2010-01-02 Thread Shah Navas
I don't understand why would it not be possible to distribute high quality
music online. Very much possible. Like Gops said we should change with time.
This is even an very acceptable and progressive change. I don't see a value
in having anything physical, if a digital equivalent can save resources,
decrease cost, increase quality and distribution access and eventually give
more power to the artist than the distributors. Similar trend is happening
in the publishing business which is far more disruptive with Kindle-only
books getting releases. At least there people have legitimate reasons to
crib saying that Kindle will be another strain on eyes. But look at the
potential upside in the trees saved and hence the costs.

'Nostalgia has relative value. Ancient sites are guarded vigorously in
Western societies while in India we spit on them.
This is a different dimension. We might destroy something old and build new
and 500 years later the new would have been old. To quote Gita - Chnage is
the only constant. But it is up to us maximise the value of change to
maximum people.

If we think rationally, what we enjoy is music not CDs. I whole heartedly
welcome this change.

Also, AR is perhaps the only film personality who doesnt have any fights/any
rifts with anyone. Staying in the industry for so long
and being loved by all is next to impossible which AR has managed to do. That
goes to show how far a persons good nature/character can go.

Conventional ‘melodies’ were replaced by experimental music, as
  Bollywood became ‘cool’.

  *2000 The end of ‘melody’
*Nadeem-Shravan had cracked it. The ’90s had belonged to the composer
duo, who churned out chartbuster tunes, one album after another. After a
brief hiatus, the duo had come back to Bollywood in 2000 with Dhadkan.
Almost instantly, the music created new records.

But with /Taal/ in the last year, A R Rahman had proved that
conventional Bollywood melodies were giving way to a new sound †where
experimentation would lead the way. The dawn of music directors like
Vishal-Shekhar and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy on the scene, who gave equal
importance to music production, as they did to composition, all
signified a complete overhaul of ‘conventional’ Bollywood music.

  *2001 The Bhatt film formula
*The signs were there, right from the time of /Kasoor/. A high-pitched
romantic number with a catchy hook (‘Kitni bechain ho ke’), a male sad
song with deep vocals (‘Mohabbat ho na jaaye’), and a female sad song
about unrequited love (‘Zindagi man gaye ho tum’). Mahesh and Mukesh
Bhatt’s films had worked out a distinct music formula at the time
of /Kasoor,/ that they’d replicate every year, in every movie, even if
the composer and singers changed. So, in the years that followed, Anu
Malik gave a similar sound in /Murder/, Pritam in /Gangster/, right up
  to Toshi-Sharib in /Jashn/. You could identify a Bhatt-film song from a
mile away, but that’s not a bad thing.

  *2002 Kaanta laga
*If the Bollywood music industry was ever in peril, it was in 2002, when
remixes threatened to replace the ‘mukhadas’ and ‘antaras’ with
different variations of the phrase ‘Let’s party’, and some turntable
effects thrown in for good measure. Shefali Zariwala became the face ...
or.. err.. butt of the remix revolution, when she starred in the music
video of /Kaanta laga/, thong firmly in place. Pristine Hindi songs
like /Chadhti jawani /acquired a new meaning, the moral police had a
field day, and DJs minted money with Non-stop remix albums. And we found
out that even Bappi Lahiri can be plagiarised, when he sued R ‘n’ B
singer, Truth Hurts for remixing his song /Kaliyon ka chaman /in his
  single, /Addictive/!

  *2003 The Return of R D*
It had to happen. After RD Burman passed away in 1994, his mad
orchestrations, wacky experiments, and penchant for using unusual
musical instruments to create songs that broke out of the typical
rhythm-based Bollywood routine, could never be recreated by any other
composer. A lot of remixes came and went, but the Panchamda sound had
been lost forever. Until /Jhankaar Beats /and /Dil Vil Pyaar
Vyaar /came. Vishal-Shekhar’s break out album, /Jhankaar Beats /was an
ode to the legacy of Panchamda, and was rooted in his sound. And /Dil
Vil Pyaar Vyaar /went the whole mile, recreating 14 of Burman’s best
songs, in the voice of the present generation. The Pancham flavour was back!

  *2004 Zip, zoom, dhoom*
Move your body, shake your ass’, did you say? That was the domain of the
‘foreign’ singers, that we caught glimpses of, on late night shows on
MTV. Music videos, did you say? Only the Indipop world of Sunita Rao and
Baba Sehgal had that. Car music, did you say? Well, unless you
call /Kanta laga /car music... In 2004, Pritam changed all that
with /Dhoom machale/. With Thai singer Tata Young at its helm, the song
was singularly responsible for the zipping ‘Hinglish’ songs we hear on
every track now, the trend of music videos, and the much-abused phrase,
  ‘international collaboration’.

  *2005 Kajra re
*There’s something about /Kajre re /(/Bunty Aur Babli/). Maybe it is the
sight of a droolsome Aishwarya Rai performing trademark Bollywood
‘thumkas’, in a ravishing, sexy avatar, that men had so-far only
  dreamed
about. Maybe it is the father-son duo dancing with abandon. Or

[arr] ARR - The Soundtrack of My Life

2010-01-02 Thread ichord
A musicglorious musicthat ever pleasing, soothing, inspiring,
maddening, soul stirring, heart wrenching combination of sounds, rhythms,
harmonies, melodies that add so much color, dimension, and depth to the human
experience; amplifying our emotions and validating them at the same time. We
are musical creatures by evolutionin our genes, our blood, our past,
present, and future. We all love musicevery human loves it...we just
differ in terms of style, form, taste. Music in our bodies, in nature,
surrounding us is this big musical sea of sound, that only so few talented
people in this world are able to tap and harness in concentrated form and
communicate so poignantly and effervescently, like a cloud gathering water from
the oceans and pouring nurturing showers to make the earth green and full of
life.

AR Rahman - One of those very special few in this world who is able to
communicate so much through musical forms, a true artiste who is able to
express beyond boundaries and given free reign, capture the hearts and souls of
millions, providing so much happiness, hope, and inspiration in a world
constantly challeged by the evils of greed, corruption, and various other
emotional and physical traumas. He has already set himself apart as a modern
day rennaissance man, artist, musician, globe trotter, humble and
compassionate philanthropist, and to me, a musical saint. Godlike he is not,
but Godlike is his music, yes! Such a refreshing and unheard of combination of
humility, simplicity, compassion yet influence, power, superstar
status.how can this be? Well, he is a measure of his music as is the music
a measure of himselfAR Rahman the man and AR Rahman's music are not as
distinct, separate entities as one might oridinarily conceive of as music being
a product or creation of an artist. It is the whole being greater than the sum
of its partsthis gestaltic notion bounded by AR's spiritual and faith
oriented consciousness that gives his expressions that stamp of divinity,
enchanted by a sense of timelessness.

Call it the AR Rahman revolution, the AR Rahman experience...whatever name you
likefact is that it seeps deeply into our daily livesthe notes, the
sounds, and forms..and makes life so much more beautiful and worth it, no
matter our personal hardships.

For me, AR's music has become the soundtrack of my life. It is not the ONLY
soundtrack, but is THE soundtrack. There is a point in time, each and every
day, that AR's music has some positive influence on my mind, my
spiritwhether helping to wash away stress or keep negative thoughts at
bayand this has nothing to do with any particular song or lyric.it's
the whole experience...the man, the music, the magic. Thank you, God for
giving me the gift or hearing! Maybe I myself am to blame for this acute
sensitivity, but I am grateful for it tooto be open enough and honest
enough to experience his music in such a way that is unprecedented by any other
musical artist or musical expression in my life thus far.

I am grateful for so much in my life and ARR's music is one of those things in
my life that I am extremely grateful for.

we've learnt to move on from Photo's to Digital Pictures.
Do u see more ppl sticking the photos of their loved ones on their wallets
or having their image as a background pic in mobile/PC ?

So, even though having the original Audio CD cover may be sentimental, we
should move on to just images of it, and start buying Digital downloads. I'm
sure selling from just a few digital Outlets will be cheaper for the
Producers too.

secondly, we can never beat piracy in India or around the world for that
matter.
Instead of focusing on Piracy, we need to make more ppl buy legally. The
change on this side is easier to do.

decrease cost, increase quality and distribution access and eventually give
more power to the artist than the distributors. Similar trend is happening
in the publishing business which is far more disruptive with Kindle-only

crib saying that Kindle will be another strain on eyes. But look at the
potential upside in the trees saved and hence the costs.

'Nostalgia has relative value. Ancient sites are guarded vigorously in
Western societies while in India we spit on them.
This is a different dimension. We might destroy something old and build new

[arr] ARR - Past analysis, Future Thoughts

2010-01-02 Thread ichord
Happy new year to all here and hope 2010 is a great one. As we turn a new page
on the annual and decadal calender, it behooved me to reflect a bit on the past
decade in terms of AR's music, where it has been, and where I think it is
going. Here are some of my thoughts:

From 2000-2009, AR's music has continuously evolved, never remaining stagnant
or stale. Every year, every soundtrack, like a true progressive artist, AR's
music offered something new, something innovative, but yet, keeping true to
his core signature strengths FOR THE MOST PART. Yes, there have been
deviations here and there in terms of what I consider to be his core
strengths, but overall, he has stayed pretty much close to home.

Some notable overall trends:
 - Much greater global recognition
 - Being able to further break the East/West barrier
 - Finding support, appreciation, accolades from the West
 - Improved PR skills - more visible, media accessable, socially confident

Some notable musical trends:
 - Greater emphasis on hip hop, synth rhythms
 - Greater emphasis on complex Western Classical structures and symphonic
arrangements in his compositions
 - Less emphasis over time on ethnic Indian instrumentation and percussion
(largely due to type of film and less period scores)
 - Less emphasis on musical adventurism within compositions (less musical
interludes, reduced complex musical structures overall within songs)
 - Improved melodic contours
 - If comparing to the late 1990s and early 2000s, I feel that his Tamil
compostions from mid 2000s to now have RELATIVELY diminished in quality,
although still worthy of ownership and appreciation. I predict that VTV will
revive a lot of this and will be regarded eventually as one of his best works
in Tamil.
 - If comparing to the late 1990s and early 2000s, I feel that his Hindi
compositions took a RELATIVE dip in terms of quality in the mid 2000s overall,
but recently revived from 2008-2009 with a huge exclamation point on the
soundtrack of Delhi 6 - one of his best ever.

2010-2019
WHAT I MOST WANT ARR TO DO:
 - Resume Indian period film scores - a lot of his best work is from these type
of scores (Iruvar, Zubeidaa, Lagaan, LOBS, Jodha Akbar)
 - Emphasize more Hindustani and Carnatic semi classical forms in his
compositions with greater Indian ethnic scores (in line with period film score
wishes)

2010-2019
WHERE I THINK ARR WILL GO
 - He will continue to make his mark in the West with some big name, high
budget films that will catapult him to even greater heights. Expect him to
eventually score for a film as big as Gladiator, Life is Beautiful, Forrest
Gump, Titanic. The West will eventually further recognize him as one of the
premier film composers of the world. With ARR's talent and creative
boundlessness, the sky is the limit for him.
 - In India, he will continue to rake in awards, etc., but with reduced overall
quantitative output in Hindi and Tamil, being more selective with his projects
(right fit with directors, script, etc). There may be very long periods (a
year or more) where we will not hear a a new ARR soundtrack from India, but
when we do, we will be blown away.

To me D6 is a sure win, no other album this year even came close to be compared
with D6. Tum Mile to me is HIGHLY overrated. there was absolutely nothing new
in it and apart from 2 songs the rest was plane average. it was typical Pritam
album. similarly IMHO Kaminey was also below VB's standards, I consider it a
mediocre album.
The one album missing which I think was as deserving as D6 or Dev D is Gulaal.
I hope Filmfare does not miss it.

[arr] Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya on iPhone

2010-01-02 Thread Gopal Srinivasan
*Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya on iPhone powered by DCI Mobile Studios*

The premiere of *Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa,* A.R. Rahman’s first album after
the Oscars, will be powered by DCI Mobile Studios (a division of
Galatta.com).

Sony Music India’s foray into the Tamil movie industry (Kollywood) has
created many landmarks and milestones with some of the most successful and
prestigious projects. And in yet another pioneering initiative, Sony Music
India announced the global launch and world premiere of A.R. Rahman’s
most-anticipated and awaited soundtrack from *Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa* –
meaning ‘Will you cross the skies for me?’ – and abbreviated to *VTV*. What
takes public anticipation to new heights is the fact that this is the first
Tamil album from A.R. Rahman after his double Academy Award win and just
before the Grammy Awards – scheduled for February 10.

*VTV* stars Silambarasan (Simbhu) – touted as the next superstar in
Kollywood – and beautiful Trisha Krishnan in the lead roles. The film is
directed by Gautham Menon (whose previous Tamil film *Vaaranam Aayiram* was
a critical, commercial and musical blockbuster with songs released by Sony
Music).

At the sneak music preview of *VTV* held in London on 19th December
2009, the entire cast and crew (including A.R. Rahman, Gautham Menon,
Simbhu, Trisha and all the singers) were present. About this music preview,
Gautham Menon said, “London was a great experience. We had a live unplugged
performance of all the songs by the singers who have sung in the album. The
audience, mostly English, loved the music. Everybody felt it sounded very
international, which was hardly surprising, considering it was music by A.R.
Rahman. The intention was to reach and test the music on an international
audience. We achieved more than that. We plan to do a road show with all the
singers now. This was a first of it's kind show. Now the expectation about
the film is tremendous and the pressure is on me now.”

The music of *VTV* will be released physically on CDs and cassettes across
the world and via Amazon.com for online buyers. Digitally, *VTV* music will
be available on iTunes, Nokia Store, and iPhone application from the first
week of January.

This unique activity for *VTV* will be executed through an iPhone music
application (app) which will allow users to stream and listen to the
complete songs, download the songs, wallpapers and other movie-related
information.

This initiative, a first-in-the-world for an iPhone application entirely
based on movie OST by Sony Music, is the result of the joint efforts by Sony
Music Entertainment India and DCI Mobile Studios, a leading Chennai-based
software and mobile applications developer, a division of Galatta.com. The
service will be available to all registered users of iPhone apps across the
world. A user will be charged $1.99 for downloading the application,
facilitating unlimited streaming of the songs from the album and $2.99 to
download the whole album.

Galatta.com has also taken steps to restrict unauthorized sharing of the
content through this unique application. A user who downloads the songs on
his iPhone or iPod will not be able to transfer it to any other (meaning
unauthorized) device.

Mr. Shridhar Subramaniam, Managing Director, Sony Music India, said, “Sony
Music has always been at the forefront of redefining music marketing. This
initiative, which is a first in India, will enable a savvy generation of
smart phone users to access streamed audio feeds over an active data
connection. Our efforts have always been to make the music reach its
audience as, when, and how they want to enjoy it. We are quite certain that
A.R. Rahman’s fans and lovers of his music will enjoy his genius through
this application.”

Commenting on the announcement, Mr. Girish Ramdas (President, Galatta.com)
said, “At Galatta.com, we recognize that mobile applications are a very
personal medium and should fulfill end-users’ desire to stream in personal
choice of audio content wherever they are; the iPhone is an ideal vehicle
for monetizing Sony’s content. This app will fulfill the dream of mobile
subscribers for easy access to the highly-anticipated film’s songs and get
to listen to the genius A.R. Rahman.

The movie will be released in the second week of February 2010.

It's sad that all the technology used in creating the song finally ends up
as a cheap MP3!! Digital release is fine, but why not release it in both cd

we can stop this happening for future audio releases...In one interview,
during the pen drive release of blue, AR was talking about distributing high
quality 24 bit music etc...If that happens, all would be happy to buy
digitally...I also believe that the webstore at arrahman.com should start
selling digital music in Indian rupees...

You got one part of the answer right, not the other part. The reason is
definitely financial but it's financial feasibility and not financial
challenges. The age of the CD is over. A market like India was never even
there. The advent of unrestrained mp3 sharing on the internet and the rise
of the CD as a medium coincided in India.

Let me give you a statistic, shocking but true. How many CDs of Slumdog
Millionaire do you think T-Series sold in India? All of 60,000. And T-Series
printed Over 500,000 copies. For all the chest beating that we do on forums
like this, the reality of the day is that nobody pays for music anymore. Who
in his right mind would want to invest in manufacturing and distributing CDs
upfront in such a market scenario? How many CDs of the Telugu dubbed version
of a massive flop do you think will sell? 1000? Can you blame T-Series for
not releasing the CD? Music labels make money only off mobile ringtones and
ringback tones and TV and FM licensing in today's world. Whatever CDs they
do release is purely promotional expenditure, it generates paltry, if any,
  income for them.

There is minimal upfront cost in distributing mp3s through the likes of
Amazon. That is the route any sensible business would take. I would be
thankful that T-Series is at least progressive enough to provide us with
that option rather than not release anything at all.

there are financial problems (how can there be financial problems
  associated
with Rahman's music and how can money get into the way of music?). I am

I hope the same doesn't happen for Boys hindi...

Why won't they release limited number of cd's under KM label, if no one
came forward to buy the rights? Just don't want to invest again on a mobile
phone when I invested on 5800 express music a year ago for connections!!
