[arr] Raavan - Below my expectation

2010-04-24 Thread ckel11
hey guys, just want to share my honest opinion on Raavan.

To me, it seems like its going to turn another Blue (very powerful music but
sub standard lyrics). i felt the lyrics and music doesn't go together in
Raavan. the same i felt about Blue.
the lyrics has no formation what so ever.

what do you guys think about it??

Kel.

[arr] ravan - first impressions

2010-04-24 Thread Roshan
I am loving this new Avatar of Rahman. all songs are raw, earthy,
in-your-face and with lots of energy. even the sweetest song in the album -
khilli re doesn't sound all that sugar coated. the heavy metal style guitar
riffs in thok de killi is so awesome. and i can't get enough of Rekha
Bharadwaj. she is one hell of a singer!

[arr] Buying 'Raavan' songs from iTunes Store (US) from India

2010-04-24 Thread Anil Wadghule
Hi,

I found way to buy Raavan songs from iTunes Store (US).

You can use iTunes gift cards to purchase the iTunes music. And to buy gift
cards you can use http://maximuscards.com/itempage.php?cat=6

They charge $2 extra for $10 gift card. But it is a huge win for buying
iTunes albums from India.

Apple should start iTunes Store for India soon. ARR do something for it..?

[arr] On Raavan.....

2010-04-24 Thread DineshVaidya
The posting count is going crazy with the release of yet another ARR Album.
Some lucky Rahmaniacs have already got the CD and have listened to it I
haven't heard any song yet as I am waiting for the CDs to reach Pune. May be
tomorrow ?

However I have no doubt that our Guruji has delivered yet another great album
and atleast I have never doubted about it. I have seen this guy at very very
close quarters practicing his performance for over 12 hours nonstop (in the
Pune concert )and his concentration itself showed that this person takes his
art very seriously.

Let's celebrate ARR's creation in a unique way ! Don't waste your posting with
just superb / fantastic / great etc etcLet's post individually a review
of this album, let that not be technical, just let everybody know what each
song does to you...

Who's first ?

Best regards

It is nothing that I could have expected from our man, but that is his

espeiciality that he gives me exactly what I can't even think of, and

it is working great. That's what makes him The composer and me The

 listener and his fan.

 --

My fav is Behne De. In this the sounds are so deep and

all-encompassing as if they are arriving from some other planet,

drowning you from all sides. You don't realize whether it is something

coming out of your speakers, or it is more likely live sounds coming

from walls and roofs and floors. It has the mood that it could be the

Taandav number. So motivating, so energetic. Even Lagaan's baar baar

ha sounds like scout boy's bathroom song in comparison with it. The

only thing lacking i feel is in voice. voice is slightly husky and is

in a shorter range that doesn't do justice with the mood of the song

which should have on higher pitch and wider range. Seems wrong choice

of singer. Sukhwinder would have done miracle in this song with his

 voice range and all-out ways.

Thok de Gilli seems situational so its effect will be seen with the

visuals and storyline. sound arrangement is pleasantly heavy here also.

Ranjha is interesting. Female voice goes miles ahead by that CHEWING

of words that bring such a unique feel that male voice doesn't measure

up. I wonder why this difference is kept? to match the screen accents

of actor/ actresses? or is it the female voice who could come up with

this chewing twisted voice and ARR retained it, and male voice

remained flat without nuances. Seems wrong choice of male singer.

Khili re is indeed soothing enough, but frankly, ARR has given

many-many much better soft and sweet song. It slightly lacks in voice.

Voice is not emotional enough, as was in Marudhani or in Chupke Se

(Sathiya) or in Kal nahi tha jo wo hai aaj kya (vishwavidhata) . And

flow here is noticeably slow - may be in comparison with other fast

tracked songs. btw, starting music and beats in Khili re made me

wonder whether it is Ek Suraj nikla tha - dil se re song starting.

Kata Kata also has similar vibrating sound but seems there are less

instruments in Kata Kata, or may be there are one fast and one slow

beat used repeatedly, so one can make out that it is sound from the

speakers. tribal accent has been well rendered by female voice.

 Closing crescendo is lovely.

Beera and Kata sound to have similar beats and style. If one hears

both the songs back to back, it will be difficult to notice when one

song ends and when other one starts. or may be, as we hear more, it

becomes clear what differences they are having. Beera has less variety

 than Kata.

 --

lyrics are great and plentiful and meaningful. pronunciation also seem

good enough here, that was my complain in many previous albums of our

man that pronunciations were unclear or even wrong. Only in Thok de

gilli, music somewhere becomes louder so drowning the voice and making

it difficult to make out what is being said. Other songs have more

 clear spoken words.

D6 has been fav of many, but that still had predictability . Here is

entirely unpredictable things in Raavan. It is so complex.

A.R. Rahman Tour to Feature ‘New Technologies’

By LISA TSERING

indiawest.com

April 22, 2010 01:38:00 PM

In a unique East-West collaboration, music maestro A.R. Rahman has joined hands
with celebrated Hollywood creative director Amy Tinkham for this summer’s “A.R.
Rahman Jai Ho Concert: The Journey Home World Tour.”

“The concert tour will be a theatrical experience that will blend new
technologies with powerful dance arrangements and acrobatics,” said Tinkham,
who is best known for creating live musical concerts for pop music icons such
as Britney Spears, the Backstreet Boys and Mariah Carey, and spectacles for
Ringling Bros. and Barnum Bailey.

Speaking at a press conference in New York City April 19, she added, “The
concert will keep intact the heritage and traditions of India with a new modern
presentation. The show will feature changing sets, large images on LED screens
and a spectacular cast of musicians and dancers from across the globe.”

The logistics of the two-and-a-half- hour shows are staggering, something that
has never been attempted by an Indian artist, said a spokesperson. Promoted as
a “true road tour,” the concerts will entail 21 days of intensive production
rehearsals on an entire touring mock set-up of lights, sound, sets, and special
effects.

The final touring production will be a mammoth undertaking never seen in the
Bollywood sphere, comprising seven 53-foot air trailers, with six touring
coaches and one star coach ferrying Rahman’s 75-person entourage.

Although Rahman has performed fusion-oriented shows before, such as a 2006
extravaganza at the Hollywood Bowl and a show with the London Philharmonic as
part of the Southbank Centre’s Alchemy Festival in London April 7, the “Jai Ho”
tour will be an unabashed celebration of the best of his Indian scores, from
1992’s “Roja” all the way to “Slumdog Millionaire.”

“I put on the table what I want in the show,” Rahman told Variety. “It’s a
marriage of two worlds. It will be very exciting even for those who’ve seen the
performances before.”

Later, speaking to the Associated Press, Rahman elaborated: “We’ve seen Indian
shows where stars would come and lip-sync on a song ... and they would dance
and audiences wanted that stuff,” he told the AP. “Here, we have the real stars
of music, and the whole vision of the whole staging of the songs (with)
segments of spirituality and celebration and festival, all these things, (and)
love.”

India-West’s query to Rahman was not answered by press time.

The tour will hit 20 cities, starting in New York June 11, and hitting the
Oakland, Calif., Oracle Arena June 26 and the Forum in Los Angeles June 27.
Rahman will perform in Paris, Amsterdam and Zurich before wrapping up the tour
in London July 25.

The concert series has been produced by Deepak Gattani of Rapport Productions,
a concert management company based in Mumbai. “It will be blend of East and
West, from Bharatnatyam to pop and tap dance,” Gattani said in a taped
announcement.

The press conference, held at K Lounge in New York City, was also attended by
leading local promoters including Monty Syed from Chicago; Paul Singh from San
Francisco; Deepak Mehta from Los Angeles; Victor Abraham from Dallas; Moid Khan
from Houston; Deepak Rajput from Detroit; and Shishir Misra, who is the
promoter of the shows in New York, New Jersey and Washington, D.C.

that too in such a film which is expected to break all the rules in Indian way
of film making.. The more i hear the songs, the more you get drenched in the
soulful music.. Deepak P.A and Sivakumar is the backbone of this album for

Behene De is about the person's desire to live free, who wants flow
free uninhibited like the river in to sea. My guess is that this song is on
the character of Raavan, his dilemma and helplessness. Very deep lyrics.
Well its Gulzar of course.

 1) Beera Beera talks about the guy Beera. ( on abhishek bachan)
 2) Behene De is the guy in love ( probably Ravan's love for Sita)
 3) Gilli talks about the beauty that Sita is.

 5) Khilli re is Sita singing with flowers and trees around her waiting for
her love to return ( probably before the kidnap)
 6) Kata Kata bechara depicts a guy getting married. Its his last day being
 single. Vikram's marriage to ash.

Kata looks big too in keeping with the articles regarding 500+ dancers etc.
 It looks like it's Raavan's sister(Surpanakha played by Priyamani)'s
wedding. Colourful. Behene de has the Bachchans - extremely interesting
stills. Apparently, Bollywood Hungama have the video of the song already and
will put it up on their website in the coming days. Ranjha Ranjha with the
Bachchans again. Thok de and Beera is with AB only.

The booklet is an absolute treat. How I wish I could understand the
lyrics. Can some kid soul please give a gist as to what each song is trying
to convey? Especially Behene De. Would be very grateful!

 - Hardcore
 - Raw, earthy, haunting
 - Quite a bit of Bhairavi raaga or variations of it
 - Heavy on percussion
 - Very satisfying experience in terms of sound
 - One of ARR's most entertaining albums ever
 - HUGE, HUGE potential to be one of his best sellers ever commercially with
each and every song a potential chartbuster.

the lyrics has no formation what so ever.

not 1 song which is instantly catchable/likable. May be I will like it with

Early 90’s have you listen to this statement “ THIS IS AR RAHMAN” – by so many
after listening to a song – who always surprises us being changing the entire
pattern of music with his own unique style for each and every venture he does
…. I can strictly say this guy is not yet changed a bit with his work that
leads him strike again again.

RAAVAN is one more in his account. That’s it. And he keeps us the same for his
all future ventures!.

AJ, I am also seeing lot of positive reactions on the net, but there are also
negative remarks...the fact i am unable to digest is that there is no instantly
hummable tune in this album. Kata Kata had huge expectations from me, but this
song sounds to me like a fun song with lot of variations in beat and singing.
the structure and variation being changed in AR's songs is seen nowadays a lot.
It irritates the listener and makes him think that where the song is going.
Beera is good but short. lot of beera beera repetitions, they could have made
the song longer with 2 stanzas. I have bn following ARR form 92 so i am used to
this initial not liking, and then getting impressed. But still, I feel this
album is a disappointment. It makes me wonder whether is this the combination
which gave Vellai pookal, pachai nirame, Dilse, Bombay, thiruda
thiruda to the world.

being changed in AR's songs is seen nowadays a lot. It irritates the listener
and makes him think that where the song is going.

--- The operative word is expectation. Our expectations
often lead to disappointments, not because of any substandard work by ARR.
ARR's songs have always been known for its structural
unconventionalitynothing new in that. It may irritate some, but fascinate
others. It doesn't irritate everyone.

Beera is good but short. lot of beera beera repetitions, they could have made
the song longer with 2 stanzas.

I agree with you. Wish the song was longer, but it would
have sounded a bit too repetitive with increased length.

I have bn following ARR form 92 so i am used to this initial not liking, and
then getting impressed. But still, I feel this album is a disappointment. It
makes me wonder whether is this the combination which gave Vellai pookal,
pachai nirame, Dilse, Bombay, thiruda thiruda to the world.

- It's the same combination, but a different time and
different movie and different direction. Hope you like this album in the future
after it further settling in. If not, tough luck and better luck next time.

Well music is par excellence but over all songs are just going nowhere , the
concept are great but just missing vital ingredients to become great or
masterpiece songs. A grand magical rusty folkish ,earthy, classical raavan
music what i thought is mssing completely
. listening kataa for bombastic precussion, khilli re for two lines and
listening beera for that promo part thats it. others songs are just going
nowhere . I could be harsh but RAVAN is a wasted opportunity.

ARR's Raavan.. a superb mixture of folky North South sounds with electronic
sound experimentation, heavy orchestration. . simply put, a vintage ARR-Mani
album !!!

ARR has not composed an inferior soundtrack ever.
This Raavan sound must be in a perfect harmony with the movie.
The gradual buildup of rhythm in first 1 minute
of Bheera is worth listening many times.
Feeling that Bheera will be the starting song of

Well my dear friends, who are not liking d album yet...u have two things to
choose one from:
1. Give more listening to it which would hopefully help u all identifying at
least part of the brilliance that every ARR soundtrack has.
2. This is a more easier thing to do. Don't post your negative views. It is said
'speak good all the time..' If you sincerely don't like it just stay away. You
are no way forced to put a positive opinion. But if you like it ,everyone here
is up to share your excitement.
Its a conscience thing- if you want to spread happiness around just stay away
from speaking bad about anything.
I'm yet to have my hands on the CD,which would take a day or two atleast.Happy
to share all your excitement till then, but sorry not your aversion.

First Approach..

 Friends,

It is that time when a new album from our boss is releasing. Makes me get
into a reflective mood in terms of how do I listen to a new album from ARR.
I primarily can think of 3 approaches/patterns under which I listen to a new
album. Let me know what you guys think.

Approach 1: Take the album listen to all the songs at one stretch and then
repeat the same process. Advantage I found of this is that you listen to all
the songs at one shot, but disadvantage is that first 2-3 times I feel
completely lost. I follow this pattern a lot.

Approach 2: Take one song at a time, listen to it a few times and then only
move to the next song. This I rarely follow. Advantage is, it helps you
internalize one song at a time. But disadvantage is it takes lot of patience
 and effort !

Approach 3: Listen to entire album once, pick the ones that stand out right
away and stray towards them. I find this most suitable approach and I easily
follow this path. But, downside is that I naturally tend to neglect some
songs and never truly enjoy them unless I revisit the album later. This is
 most preferred approach for me.

So guys, what do you think ? I am curious to know how others do this.

Jaa Re Ud Ja Re, Rut Beet Gayi this song was performed at audio launch event
of Raavan, but this song is not released on CD. It is sung by AR Rahman himself
and has some arabic (?) lyrics as well.. and we dont know whether there are any
more additional songs which are not released.

It happens often with Mani sir's movies but sometimes songs remain un-released
(Ishq Ke Imtehaan - Dil Se, Sattena Nenaindhadhu Nenjam - Kannathil
Mutthamitaal) Hopefully, we will see re-release of the CD (e.g. Bombay,
Alaipayuthey, Chor Chor) or songs will get released on some compilation (Guru)

AJ, I am also seeing lot of positive reactions on the net, but there are
also negative remarks...the fact i am unable to digest is that there is no
instantly hummable tune in this album. Kata Kata had huge expectations from me,
but this song sounds to me like a fun song with lot of variations in beat and
singing. the structure and variation being changed in AR's songs is seen
nowadays a lot. It irritates the listener and makes him think that where the
song is going. Beera is good but short. lot of beera beera repetitions, they
could have made the song longer with 2 stanzas. I have bn following ARR form 92
so i am used to this initial not liking, and then getting impressed. But still,
I feel this album is a disappointment. It makes me wonder whether is this the
combination which gave Vellai
pookal, pachai nirame, Dilse, Bombay, thiruda thiruda to the world.

I respect your initial impressions, but please give it some time and try to
avoid conclusive statements for now.

This album is not going to be liked by everyone. You're right, the song
melodies and structures for the most part are complex and not straightforward,
which may not be everyone's preference.

Some pretty extreme first impressions I'm seeing on the net...but, most
comments are positive and many saying it's one of ARR's finest works.

primarily can think of 3 approaches/patterns under which I listen to a new

But, downside is that I naturally tend to neglect some songs
and never truly enjoy them unless I revisit the album later. This is most
preferred approach for me.

So guys, what do you think ? I am curious to know how others do this.

[arr] Re: Raavan songs - not impressing on intial hearing..

2010-04-24 Thread Chef
I agree with Prakash..these songs would gel with the storyline and would be a
treat to watch with mani's visuals but on the contrary the songs are not as
catchy and will not reach the mass. As Rahman Sir's fan we enjoy every bit of
the song and we enjoy the song in detail(Personally i love all 6 songs) but for
the masses, catchy tune, hummable tune and lyrics are required for a success
of a song. Songs like Humma,Dil se, Rang de,jai ho,masakkali to name
a few were catchy..In Raavan except for Beera and behne de, the rest might
not go well with the crowd. As usual lets wait and see in the coming weeks if
these songs reach them.Having said that I am also eager to listen to its tamil
version as sometimes the tamil versions are better due to the lyrics.
