There's a statue of Don Bradman at the Cathedral End of the Adelaide
Oval, where he appears to be dancing down the track and lofting the
ball
straight over the bowler's head. The bat is above his left ear, his
knees are bent and the eyes are looking upwards, watching the ball
soar
into the horizon of his home ground. It was fitting that Sachin
Tendulkar chose the venue to bring up an immaculately-crafted hundred,
the kind which is said to have put Bradman so far ahead of the rest.

There wouldn't have been a better period film (atleast as of now) to
 show Rahman's class.

It wasn't an innings with any distinct shade, rather one that covered
the entire spectrum. Walking in to a standing ovation, he didn't score
off the first 18 balls. Soon after he had eased into first gear, he
set
the stage with a flurry of fours. The first was a simple, yet glorious
straight drive off Brett Lee; the fourth was hammered past Mitchell
Johnson, the bowler. The skies were clear but it would have been
fitting
if a rainbow hung over the arena.

An innings with as much variety and class as JA.

Bradman rated his 254 at Lord's as his finest innings, simply because
each stroke went exactly where he intended. It was interesting to hear
Tendulkar talk about the first couple of straight drives here, saying
how the ball travelled precisely where he wanted it to go. These are
phases which come and go, he said, and you know when you're hitting
the ball well. You need to wait for that moment.

 So Rahmanesque :)

He signed off with a cheeky ramp over the slips, making full use of
Lee's pace and bounce, and rounded off an innings which had almost
 everything.

So does JA end with a Bajan.

I might sound silly. But I am blessed to be in the same era as Rahman
and Tendulkar. When both Rahman and Tendulkar strike the joy
multiplies
and when India wins and the Movie becomes a hit...the joy is only
 unlimited.

1. Each member, compile a list of your ten best ARR scores (yes,
 entire
scores not just a song) in descending order of preference. Send
this
vote to me, not to the entire group.

2.Votes can be placed for scores in any language and non-film
albums
too.

3. Votes received for a dubbed film will be added to the tally of
the
original film(i.e. a vote received for SApnay will be considered as
 one
for Minsara KAnavu)

4. I have currently set a deadline of January 31st, to receive your
vote. This may of course be extended on request.

5. This is how I propose to evaluate the votes - A film in position
1
gets 10 points, a film in position 2 9 points and so on with a film
 in
position 10 getting 1 point.

6. A final ranking shall be arrived at by tallying these points and
 the
overall Top 10 and memberwise Top 10 shall be mailed to the group
or
posted on a webpage.

2007-10-24 Thread Shah Navas G
Raj,

Wonderful idea...we should take this forward

1. It will help the fans out here a chance to let out their creative
skills.. There are amazing people in forum who are as good as
professionals.

2. Its a great project to start off and do a collaborative work on
internet and lay a foundation/template for greater works in future.

3. We can make a video and promote on youtube and other avenues in
internet.

4. Yes, this would make a great gift to ARR, his birthday is
approaching. A chance to give back to ARR, who has given us so much.

We can include inspiring and touching speeches and images of Rahman,
his music touching everybody from poor to rich, build a theme around
the life and works of Rahman...

An A R Rahman Fans Production...

Whew...Great way to show our gratitude..

Mind is excited with ideas..Just imagine how many ideas we will end up
with when everybody collaborates

Yes!!! It would be a challenge to convey the idea without a single
word spoken...The background and his actions should say he is not
understanding the language, but enjoying the music..

And then weave ARR's video saying - 'Music has no language' seemlessly
like the original version is weaved in the Ponmagal Remix..

Will need lots of creativity...sounds really exciting...

I have never done any such thing in my life before...but do count me,

ATM confirmed for Diwali!
By Moviebuzz | Tuesday, 23 October , 2007, 09:32
[left] Now that the audio is released, Vijay's Azhagiya Tamil Magan
will positively make it for Diwali. The producer 'Swargachitra' Appachan
has preponed the release by a day from November 8 (Diwali Day) to
November 7, stumping all the doubting people in the trade who were
saying that the film will be postponed!
Appachan after consulting a leading Kerala astrologer has gone for
November 7, a more auspicious day being Pradosham. ATM is likely to open
worldwide with around 410 prints.

The re-recording of ATM is going on at A.R Rahman's Panchathan
Record-Inn in Chennai, along with the composition of the stage
adaptation of JRR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings music. Rahman has
promised to complete the entire re-recording and mixing by November 1,
so that it can be censored by November 2 or 3.

Pyramid Saimira, the distributors of ATM is going to start a pre-release
campaign, once the music of the film becomes more popular.

The views expressed in the article are the author's and not of Sify.com.

LONDON, England (CNN) -- The Screening Room went to the Theatre Royal in
Drury Lane in the heart of London's West End, where a spectacular
musical version of The Lord of The Rings is enjoying a successful run,
to meet Indian composer A. R. Rahman, whose blend of Asian culture with
rock and Western classical styles has revolutionized the Indian film
industry. And now Rahman is about to make his mark in Hollywood.
  [art.rahman.jpg]
A. R. Rahman, interviewed by CNN's Screening Room
  [4]
Virtually unknown in Europe and the U.S., Rahman has sold 200 million
albums worldwide -- more than the Beatles -- and is worshipped
throughout much of Asia, where he's known as the Mozart of Madras.

Now he has added a Hollywood film score to his vast repertoire of movie
music.

Rahman explained to CNN what he thinks makes great movie music. A great
soundtrack is like 'Lauras theme', the 'Love Story' theme, 'Chariots of
Fire' and all those sorts of things, where it stood by itself, he said.
But recently, he's noticed a changing mood. Now it is becoming too
abstract and more ambient and more... I don't know, soundscape-ish, more
than melody. People are afraid of melody: 'Oh, that melody is
distracting my scene,' it is becoming like that.
Don't Miss
*  The Screening Room http://edition.cnn.com/screeningroom/

* Our top 10 songs from the movies
http://edition.cnn.com/2007/SHOWBIZ/Movies/08/22/top10.songs/

And that brings fresh challenges for the makers of film music. Now the
challenges of the composer are much more, he told CNN. One needs to
know of recording, production, it is not enough to compose a great theme
and [know] how it can intertwine with the movie. And with Indian film it
is an even greater challenge, because we need to be like Michael
Jackson, John Williams, Hans Zimmer and an Indian folk composer all put
together. So they expect finesse and they expect versatility.

Rahman's compositions are versatile enough to be used by both Bollywood
and Hollywood, a case in point being his music for the Hindi film Dil
Se, which was used almost a decade later by Spike Lee for Inside Man.

But for Rahman, the process to create film music is being challenged by
increasingly crammed movie schedules. There used to be a time where the
director and the composer would work together, he explained. They
would develop themes and the director would shoot a scene, but now the
world's so fast that people are finishing the movie even before going to
a composer.

As well as writing songs and scores, Rahman has featured in many
Bollywood films singing the songs which are mimed by the acting
superstars. He recently completed a sell-out tour of the U.S. performing
highlights from his songbook to devoted fans.

He explained to CNN how playback singing is a normal part of Indian film
music. Well, until I worked in 'Bombay Dreams' six or seven years back,
I never realized that it is not cool to have playback singing. Until
then, it was the story of Indian films where somebody else lip synchs
and somebody else sings. And Rahman has been converted to the Western
model, where those singing on-screen usually provide the vocals
themselves. In my future projects I would rather have a star who
sings, he said.

Director Shekhar Kapur recruited Rahman and fellow composer Craig
Armstrong to provide the score for Cate Blanchett's sequel to
Elizabeth, The Golden Age, which premieres at Toronto Film Festival
in September this year.

Kapur described the thrill of working with two such different -- and
complementary -- composers. He told CNN, Here are two totally different
cultures. Craig Armstrong is strings and heart, the skies, choir, angels
and devils, and A. r. is modern, restless music.

Just to get them together was very interesting for me. To sit there and
see both of them jamming together, that was fascinating. They wouldn't
talk, they would jam, and out of the jamming came the music. It was
great.
Rahman is still getting used to his new-found status as darling of both
East and West -- and it leads to a somewhat chaotic lifestyle, as he
explained. It is terrifying sometimes. I suddenly wake up in Scotland
doing music for 'Golden Age,' and suddenly

If you want Rahman to do your kind of music, doesn't that defeat the

Gopal,

Is the Donasian Song that was arranged by Rahman included the list?
(Does it go by some other name?)

Also shouldn't the Sivaji Rap bit for bald Rajini's intro be included?

I would like to have the entire catalogue compiled and released.

With your permission, can the fans here collaborate and contribute in
making that compilation and share within ourselves?

Many of them might have the entire list already. And some of the
concert only songs might not be available at all. Still an attempt
would be an great opportunity for fans like me to get those missing
pieces.

Hmmm..copy right issues..but we have enough originals and we are
collecting it purely for personal use. Kindly let me know your
thoughts on this.

Bollywood icon Rahman sees 'a great future of extraordinary films'
APARITA BHANDARI

Special to The Globe and Mail

June 15, 2007

A.R. Rahman is surprisingly humble, given his status as an international
music icon.

Dubbed Mozart from Madras, he is India's best-known composer. He has
sold more than 150 million albums, and scored more than 70 films. His
work has been heard in Bollywood and Hollywood blockbusters, and on the
Toronto stage. Yet, when asked about his Mozart moniker, the 39-year-old
Rahman just laughs and says, But I don't do classical. He does pop.

His pop reaches worldwide. His hit songs Bombay Theme and Chaiya
Chaiya, originally composed for Indian movies Bombay and Dil Se, have
subsequently been sampled by Hollywood (Lord of War, starring Nicolas
Cage, and Spike Lee's Inside Man, starring Denzel Washington).

This weekend, his tunes grace the Tamil movie Sivaji, playing at
Woodside Cinema as well as Cineplex Odeon theatres in Scarborough,
Brampton and Markham. Marking the return of star Rajnikanth for his
100th film, Sivaji is anticipated by fans across the globe. Rahman's
rap-heavy score has only added to the hype.

Toronto has become one of Rahman's international hangouts. He was in the
city earlier this year for the world premiere of Bollywood movie Guru at
the Elgin Theatre. Last weekend, he brought his live 3rd Dimension Tour
to the Air Canada Centre, belting out signature tunes with pyrotechnic
bursts, back-up dancers, a laser and 3-D light show adding to the drama
the as more than 13,000 fans roared in response.

And, most notably, he co-composed the score for the Toronto stage
version of The Lord of the Rings, staying in the city while he worked.

Lord isn't his only stab at the stage: His Bollywood tunes were the
backbone of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Bombay Dreams. At first, it
was like Riverdance, just music and dance, Rahman says in an interview.
Eventually they brought in the culture of Hindi film industry as the
story. ... Some stuff might look cheesy, but it's meant to.

The death of his father, also a composer, started Rahman on his musical
journey when he was 9. Throughout his teens, he was a Bollywood session
musician; at 17, he started composing jingles for TV commercials and
studied Western classical music at Oxford University. At a party to
celebrate an award-winning jingle, he ran into Tamil film director Mani
Ratnam, who signed him to compose the music for Roja, marking Rahman's
debut as a composer of film scores at the age of 25.

Compared with formulaic soundtracks of the time, Roja's fresh tunes
became an instant hit. They featured everything from raga to reggae,
jungle rhythms to Broadway-style orchestrations, and yet stayed Tamil.

When I got the chance to do my first film, Rahman says, I wanted to
do something different. I thought it was my last film. People will not
want to check me out. But they loved it.

His Hollywood forays continue (next up: Shekhar Kapur's Elizabeth
sequel), but the Indian film industry remains his bread and butter,
Rahman says. He's proud of his Bollywood oeuvre, despite critics writing
off the genre as melodramatic and kitschy. For me, Bollywood is a huge
expression of India, he says. It's not exploited fully. I can see a
great future of extraordinary films. People have woken up now, they are
ambitious with their projects.

It's the only form of mass entertainment that exists in India, he
adds. We don't have a symphony, and Indian classical music isn't
popular in mainstream. Films have to fulfill everything people crave for
- pop, classical,

Hi Sathya,

I do appreciate and listen to your musical compositions.

But this forum, is for A R Rahman. As long as you have ARR compositions
to share, its fine for me.

But I sense that your messages are trying more to promote yourself.
(This is purely a personal view).

I know its really tough to draw a line between Fan's enthusiasm and self
promotion.

So I ask Gopal and others - should we allow musicians to promote
themselves on this forum?
(After all music is what we are here for, and ARR himself wants to
promote budding and new talents)

On an opposing note - won't letting non-ARR related stuff and music to
be promoted dilute the forum in the long run?

Just my thoughts and no offense meant to anybody.
And I stand with the view that this forum should be ARR and ARR only, as
with the convergence of technologies, and umpteen number of talent hunts
and shows, artists have so many other channels to promote themselves.

Will the songster outlive the studio?

SHARADA RAMANATHAN

As Rahman's career hits the halfway mark, where does he go from here?

Photo: R. Ragu

Innovator: A.R. Rahman riding high.
AS Allah Rakha Rahman crosses the 40-year mark in 2007, this mid-career
whizkid peaks as the uncontested national trendsetter in contemporary
film music.

He has, arguably, introduced the new sound that is the chic-techno film
music; music that gets created in the intimacy of the music-maker and
his machine with the song visualisation as their common purpose.

Mixed milieu

Rahman is perhaps the third generation novelty in film music, a novelty
that emerged from the fertile backdrop of south Indian and,
specifically, Tamil film music. Rahman emerged from a milieu that is a
curious mix of Carnatic and western fusion, quintessential of the new
globalised Tamil Nadu sensibility; a trend set by the likes of L.
Subramaniam in classical fusion, and Ilayaraja in film music. By his own
admission, among Rahman's early influences are Zakir Hussain and his
fusion group, Shakti, which has a strong presence of Carnatic rhythm.
And there is no mistaking the subliminal influence of his predecessors
in his musical impulse.

M.S. Viswanathan immortalised his first forays into experimental film
music in Kollywood in the 1960s and 1970s, when he introduced genres
ranging from bhangra to western jazz and pop. MSV's repertoire was
mostly real-time compositions by full-fledged orchestras. MSV's
contemporaries include musical giants like S.D. Burman, Naushad Ali and
Madan Mohan.

Ilayaraja's arrival was heralded by the nascent new-techno music of the
1980s. He is acclaimed as the pioneer of multi-track techno music and
sounds in composing and orchestration. Ilayaraja's best-known Bollywood
counterpart was R.D. Burman. MSV and Ilayaraja have left a legacy of
composition-value film songs, which served the requirements of their
films and yet hold their own as creations for posterity.

Emergence

After MSV the creator and Ilayaraja the pioneer came Rahman the
innovator. The 1990s belonged to him. Rahman emerged at a time when
technology was a given, and was creating global access to musical sounds
from anywhere to anywhere. He was moulded by the age of jingles and
music videos, downloads and virtuality.

Rahman is the innovator of what may be described as `Studio music'. It
is often critiqued that while Ilayaraja controls the machine, it is the
machine that controls Rahman! Harsh as this criticism might be, Rahman's
music is the outcome of separately and distinctively worked out
multi-track musical phrases and sounds that are subsequently mixed and
patched together as one layered musical piece. The lyric is often fitted
in.

In contrast to MSV and Ilayaraja's virtuosity, Rahman's music reflects
his effort to synergise his musical vision with the possibilities of
technology and musical arrangement. His is studio music that does not
easily accommodate a sense of the `live'. One is often amused by
Rahman's stage shows where the technical sound is cleverly managed, but
the singers struggle to cope with their breathless songs simply because
the songs were never meant to be sung live. They are musical phrases
pieced together for a cinema trend that itself is predominantly
cut-and-paste.

What makes Rahman the numero uno of Indian film music? Despite
contemporaries like Anu Malik, what has made Rahman the first among
equals?

It is clearly a combination of his audio and visual appeal. His musical
arrangement is technically excellent and justifies his musical vision.
He has the special talent to enhance the digital ambience to produce
sound with a three-dimensional feel. He has the ability to evoke energy
and mood through a song, and create touching moments through sound. He
is intuitive in picking on the right inspiration for the right musical
moment, say, Arabic for Hamma Hamma (Bombay), Indian raga-pop for Que
Sera Sera (Pukar) or Turkish for Maya Maya (Guru). And even if he is
not the first to pick on the right inspiration, he will ensure some kind
of a `first' — a new voice, a new instrument or just a new turn of
phrase. And he is the best at wrapping and delivering sound so that a
nation swings to it.

International profile

And then there is the international profile to boot. Rahman packages
what is now known as global music. He simplifies the main melody, fuses
it with sounds from world music and arranges it skilfully. This has made
his music more edible and sought after in the international scene. From
the remixed versions of Vande Mataram and the Indian national anthem to
the Broadway musical Bollywood Dreams, Rahman is the mascot for
new-age nationalism and international merchandising.

In an era when people see rather than hear music, Rahman is also
camera-friendly. He comes across as an eclectic fusion of

Isn't that a window to acknowledge old songs the younger generations?
In fact what did ARR do to deserve this warning?
Did he remixed the song in such an insulting way?
No..he just breath life into it..It's just like repainting an old

I hope people would really understand the meaning of remix..Not just

Wat ARR did was very melodious, and I'm proud that it became a

[arr] Allah Rakha Rahman - The Guru

2007-01-13 Thread Shah Navas G
Since yesterday night, when I saw Guru, my mind is consumed with these
thoughts – How about Mani making a biopic on Rahman?

The opening lines of the movie would say All characters inthis movie
are true and any coincidence to reality is purely intended.

Probably Mani sir is the only person to whom Rahman can't say no…

The movie will be on the lines of Guru, except for the negative shade.

A musical spanning 4 decades:

1st – childhood and struggle

2nd – youth and hard work

3rd – adulthood and raise and raise of Rahman and so comes criticism

4th – Rahman redefined….World acknowledges the Legend

Wow. . . What a musical would that be…none of the music would repeat
in the movie…

The music would mature from jingles to Roja days to Taal,Dilse days to
Water and Guru days!

Each time Rahman's character appears there will be different themes…

Sivamani to Naveen to Blazee - interpreting the main theme in their
own way…

Rahman's life has enough real life incidents to make a commercial movie
– envying peers, not so supportive media, in fact writing him off
completely at times only to be proven wrong again by his work.

If we can take some cinematic liberty and add a dramatic sequence of
events leading to a meeting between Mani sir and Rahman, a
very supportive wife, even more supportive fans, all stars waiting to
get Rahman score music for their movie, secret plots by bashing
peers… who in the end turn good and join www.arrahmanfans.com

Mani would be the mentor Nana Saheb . . Barath Bala would be his
`friend in need' …

And Mani sir can let the character grow from a kid to youth with rock
star looks to a charming spiritualist...

Lo… we have movie which I will watch at least 100 times…

Now after Guru, no can say me to stop dreaming….

Abhijit wonders why Bollywood music sounds so different yet remains
inherently the same.

Theother day, while listening to FM on the daily office commute, I
wasstruck by how different Hindi film music sounds today from what it
didmaybe even 4 or 5 years back. And yet it was odd-the
melodiesthemselves did not seem to have changed that much-but the way
they werearranged and orchestrated had undergone a sea change. To
understandwhy, I decided to do some digging.

Giventhat there are only 12 distinct notes in most music around the
world, there are only two ways of creating different moods and cadences
fromthese 12 notes- playing a selection of them in different
combinationsand sequences, and the other by playing a number of notes at
the sametime. Indian classical music, in both its Hindustani and
Carnatic manifestations, focuses on the former; the raga
conceptessentially is a set of rules which notes can be used with others
in agiven sequence. Western classical, and in a much more specific
context, jazz music, deal with notes stacked one over the over to
createdifferent cadences, albeit with a far fewer number of scales.

Most Indian music directors, both in the past and the present, have been
adept at creating melodies based on various ragas, and that is where the
term song bank originates. Ask anyone from AnuMalik to Himesh
Reshamiya to Nadeem-Shravan at their peak about theirplans for the
future, and they will all mention having 10,000 songs intheir song
bank. These are typically melodies either written down orrecorded
by the composer in a semi-finished state, but which are by nomeans songs
ready for final recording.

Thisis where the role of orchestration comes into play-for musicians
whocan take semi-finished pieces and flesh out their essence.

Thisis where things have changed in the last decade-primarily with
theadvent of AR Rahman. For the first time since the mid-70s,
Indiancinema heard a composer with his feet comfortably in the Indian
andWestern moulds. Although Illayaraja in the south and Anand-Milind
andViju Shah had experimented with synthesizers in the past, Rahman
reallybought the instrument to the fore and showcased how it could be
usedcreatively and inexpensively for movie scoring. The music for
cultmovies like Roja, Thiruda Thiruda, etc. was done almost entirely on
synthesizer, with the backgroundscores (also done by Rahman) standing
out. However, soon afterwardsRahman also proved his expertise at
composing and arranging for otherinstruments, with the incomparable
Kadri Gopalnath providing thebedrock for the saxophone-laden soundtrack
for Duet, and more recently in the guitar-and-strings Rang De Basanti.

Therevolution from down south caused Bollywood to take notice, and
formany excellent music arrangers to get work. Anyone who has listened
toAnu Malik's flamenco-and-hiphop-tinged work in Aks has manic
drummer and composer Ranjit Barot (remember Sunita Rao's Pari?) to
thank. The composer's own work for movies like Holiday and Asoka,
unfortunately, has gone criminally underappreciated.

Theother big names to come out of this modernist,
technology-orientedmusical scene of the late 90s were Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy
andVishal-Shekhar. Ehsaan and Loy, both seasoned jazz and rock
sessionsmusicians in Bombay, along with classically-trained Shankar
Mahadevan, have perfected the trick of taking simple, catchy themes and
drivingthem with radio-friendly rhythms. Personally, though, some of
theirover-emphasis on synthesis leaves me cold-a case in point being
theappalling sarod solo in Mitwa from Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna;it is so
obviously played on a keyboard that it leaves one cold.Vishal-Shekhar,
too, have found their groove in creatively usinghip-hop and rock rhtyms
and programming to get their point across.Another brilliant
orchestrator, albeit a composer of somewhat diciermerit, is
Calcutta-based guitarist Pritam Chakraborty. On his twobreakthrough
releases, Gangster and Woh Lamhe, he has rearranged tracks from
Indonesia (Kya Mujhe Pyar Hai), West Bengal (Bheegi Bheegi) and Arabia
(Ya Ali) with such brilliance that even the niggling criticism that
these are not really his own songs is left behind.

In closing, a heads-up for a slightly unknown gem in the Hindi film
music firmament: Sandesh Shandilya's score for Socha Na Tha;a score
that seemed impossibly fresh-sounding for a long time, until Ifigured
out why. For the first time in years, this was a score whereall the
instruments were real-from the guitars, to the string sectionto the
drums, which almost seems extinct these days, having beenreplaced by the
discotheque-friendly synth thump.

first time in a Tamil film.

They are joining hands for 'Azhagiya Tamizh Magan', the film produced by

Rahman, whose hits this year include 'Rang de Basanti', is reportedly
refreshed by the idea of scoring music for a Vijay film. Naturally,

« Movie Review: Casino Royale 007
Music Review: Guru
Published by Vijay November 18th, 2006 in Music Reviews

guru_10.jpgguru_11.jpgguru_12.JPG

Mani Ratnam, A R Rahman and Gulzar - when they came together last
time, they created 'Dil Se'. They are back again as a team in Guru.
And the songs are really from dil se. A R Rahman has always reserved
his best for Mani Ratnam - be it Roja, Bombay, Dil Se, Saathiya or
Yuva. Guru is no exception. Guru has seven songs of which the first
two - 'Barso Re' and 'Tere Bina' are sure shot winners the moment you
hear them.

Barso Re… Shreya Ghoshal Uday Mazumdar
Na re na re na na re na re… this is not your usual baarish song.
Shreya Ghoshal sounds very different and sweet in this beautifully
written number. Picturized on Aishwarya Rai, this one surely sets the
tone for the rest of the album. Already aired on TV channels, it's a
nice song to begin with.

Tere Bina… A R Rahman Chinmayee / Additional Voices: Murtaza, Qadir
/ Dialect Coach: Raqeeb Alaam
Whenever A R Rahman sings, the song becomes special. Here he croons in
a way similar to 'Kabhi neem neem' from Yuva - difference being he
sings here full fledged rather than just humming.

Ek Lo Ek Muft… Bappi Lahiri Chitra / Additional Voices: Tanvi,
Saloni, Boney, Jaidev
Buy one get one free! Bolo Guru! Bappi Lahiri sings this situational
number probably when Abhishek and Aish have twins. Yammo yammo… sung
in a very typical Bappi Lahiri voice, this might look better on screen.

Mayya… Maryem Toller, Chinmayee, Keerthi
Probably picturized on Mallika Sherawat, 'Mayya' is the much talked
about item number in Guru. Maryem Toller sings in a nasal voice aptly
suited to the 1950s/1960s settings. It might remind you of 'Satrangi
re' from Dil Se in between when Chinmayee and Keerthi sing a couple of
lines. Guru theme music, which you would have seen in the trailer, can
be heard towards the end of this song.

Ay Hairathe Aashiqui… Hariharan Alka Yagnik
'Ay Hairathe Aashiqui' begins with the similar jashn jashn tune of
'Tere Bina' but soon forms its own identity when you hear Hariharan.
Alka Yagnik gives good company to Hariharan in this beautifully
written Ghazal. Quite melodious, more so when you have A R Rahman
humming in the background.

Baazi Laga… Udit Narayan, Madhushree, Swetha, Bhargawee
You can hardly have an A R Rahman album without Udit Narayan singing
at least one song. Here he brings the Bihari babu again singing 'Baazi
laga' for Abhishek probably when Guru starts making it big in the big
bad world of money.

Jaage Hain… Chitra, A.R. Rahman, Madras Chorale Group
'Jaage Hain' is more of a musical piece than any routine song. This
one has quite a deep meaning lyrics on the lines of 'Woh subah kabhi
to aayegi'.

Overall, I would say Guru has a music which would be a Hit with the
classes from Day One. And it also has some numbers, which would be Hit
with the masses instantly. Guru's music has the potential to make it
Big, real Big. As a bonus you also get five A R Rahman hit songs from
the past in this album.

Shah Navas

Music review of GURU

Mani Ratnam's winter release GURU, with Abishek Bachchan at the
helm, is this year's most awaited film. The last Mani Ratnam movie
to come out was Ayutha Ezhuthu two years back. He made India sit up and
take notice of the junior Bachchan as an artist of note. Now he is back
with a straight Hindi film, which is widely reported to be based on the
life of the late Dhirubhai Ambani.

Mani Ratnam and A R Rahman have always been a winning combo, since their
Roja days. Together, they have created absolute magic and it is no
wonder that expectations are sky-high with the upcoming release. Mani
Ratnam has pulled off a casting coup of sorts, with Aishwarya Rai,
Madhavan, Vidya Balan and Mithun Chakraborthy sharing stage with
Abhishek. Though the cast is of no importance whatsoever when the
director is Mani, the media's interest has been more than piqued,
imagining these artists together, in one movie.

The audio for GURU was released in Mumbai earlier amidst much fanfare.
There are seven songs on the album and one can see more than the odd
interesting name amongst the singers. For instance, Bappi Lahiri is
singing a Rahman song for the first time ever. The song, Ek Lo Ek Muft
is quite unlike anything Bappi has sung till now. It is a typical Rahman
number, which in turns means that Bappi is trying to do something
completely different to what he has done before. For that reason, I
wonder how much acceptance this song would get amongst the singer's
fans.

Ey Hairathe first grabbed my heart when I downloaded the ringtune from
the movie's website. It had an odd melancholy to it that reminded me
of Bombay. Hariharan's voice, as he sings the ghazal-like verses is
mesmerising.

The song, Tere Bina is already proving to be a rage among the fans –
every website carrying the music review has raved about this number.
After listening to it a couple of times, I can understand why. It is ARR
at his best and for me, one of the best songs of the year.
Chinmayee's voice blends really well with Rahman's and the
result is a melodious, classical number that will keep resonating in
your ears long after the CD has finished playing.

Barso Re, sung by Shreya Ghoshal, is a rain song. I haven't heard a
good rain song in years and now this one has come to end the drought.
Like a typical rain song, this is full of pep and energy. Like Tanvi in
Sillunu Oru Kaadal, ARR has made the singer change her voice modulation
to suit the mood of the song and I have to say, this time, it was worked
perfectly. For Shreya herself, this song is sure to bring numerous
accolades.

Jaage Hain, with Chitra getting together with Rahman, is another decent
track. Most of the numbers on this album are of the slow variety and
this one is no exception. But it is great, nonetheless, with the Madras
Chorale Group joining the two main singers to do the backing vocals. The
mood of the song is that of a big stage, orchestra production and the
singers do full justice to it. The vocals are amazing and Chitra sounds
absolutely fantastic. A class number, this one.

To me, the best song in the collection is Mayya Mayya. Sung by Canadian
singer Mayyam Toller and Chinmayee, this is a sultry number, with the
singers' voice blending together beautifully. The song is sure to
raise the pressure of any red blooded-male (or female, why be sexist?!)
up a couple of notches. Another number with Middle East overtones, this
one is a sure winner. This song is the one that is rumoured to have been
picturised on Mallika Sherawat.

Baazi Laga, by Udit Narayan, Bhargavee, Madhushree and Swetha is one
number I did not like. It does not sound like a Rahman composition to
me, and the whole arrangement did not jive. Gambling songs are popular
in the Indian movie scenario, one of my most memorable ones being Aadi
paaru mangaathaa from the movie May Maadham. I cannot be the only one
who feels disappointed with this one.

The album, on the whole, has mixed offerings – some might strike a
chord in your heart instantly while some you might dislike so much you
want to skip to the next track. But in my opinion, this is pure ARR
– most of his songs take a bit of getting used to before they grow
on you. Give it a couple of listens and then judge the songs – you
just might love them!

http://callmekarthik.blogspot.com/2006/11/r-rahman-mani-ratnam-abhishek.html

A R RAHMAN, MANI RATNAM, ABHISHEK, AISHWARYA ... you dont get to
see all of them together in a single movie very frequently !! dont you
??? Well Right from the day this movie was announced, I have been
eagerly awaiting for the music and was pretty lucky to grab a copy the
day it released!!! A.R.Rahman is all set to weave his magic again with
Guru. The little maestro has come up with awe inspiring music in his
latest album and continues the legacy of his pairing with Maniratnam.
A.R.Rahman has worked for 11 months for this album and based on what I
have heard, its worth all the hard work and the wait.Guru is yet
another reason, why you should have a good music system at home.
Before we get into the review, the audio CD is bit different from the
other CD's. For the first time, there is Mani Ratnam's image inside
the CD cover. And a dedication from AR Rahman

The song Tere Bina is dedicated to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Saab -
fondly remembering his association with me through this decade - AR
Rahman

Barso Re: Shreya Ghosal, Uday Mazumdar

Shreya Goshal is a regular visitor inside the ARR music circuit these
days and after stunning us with Munbe Vaa in SOK shez back with
another sweet and lovely number Barso Re. The songs starts with a
humming Na re Na re by Shreya Goshal and within few seconds Naveen
joins her with his flute. Both of them kinda tease you for the first
30 seconds to gather your attention, and just when you start paying
close attention the drum beat starts. A foot tapping song, but not
very fast too. 3 things make this song very good. Shreya's voice,
flute and the drum beats. Actually, the drum beats are very prominent
but no where they intrude in the song. Its in the background and
soothing when shreya is singing, and when she isnt singing the beats
are in the foreground. And when Shreya sings Bhailon ki ghanti baji,
Aur taal lage barne you can hear the claps. As if someone is clapping
at a distance. And the song reaches a feverish pitch at the fague end.
Rahman showcases his talent in folk music with this danceable number.
Maniratnam's skills in picturising such sequences are beyond question
and hence this song promises to be an absolute treat. This song is
First in the Album an Instant Winner for every audience.

Tere Bina - AR Rahman, Chinmayee Additional voices - Murtaza, Qadir,
Dialect Coach - Raqeeb Alam

The song starts with Murtaza Qadir humming Dum dara dum dara mast mast
.. and when Rahman joins the song, a Rahmaniac like me cant
stop humming along. Irrespective of the number of songs of Rahman that
were a hit, the songs sung by Rahman will hold a special place in the
heart of any Rahman fan. Am really glad that, Rahman is singing a song
in every movie of his nowadays. A very pleasant feeling, when these
guys go Dum dara dum dara. And when Rahman starts off with Tere Bina I
must admit I was out of this world !!! Truly takes you off by surprise
when ARR interleaves a alapana inbetween a small intrumental clip
like how the chennai slang goes i got just one word to describe
this Super! and as for the female voice... the girl who mesmerized
with the song Nenjil jil jil ..yea am talking about Chinmayee, she has
done complete justice for the female voice and its really difficult to
find faults here !! I sincerely feel this is a concert song, that will
feature in his future concerts. Imagine the whole crowd going `Dum
dara dum dara' and Rahman singing the song. Oh Rahman. Bin tere music
kya jeena?

Ek lo Muft - Bappi Lahiri, Chitra Additional voices - Tanvi, Saloni,
Boney, Jaidev

I bet Bappi Da ! certainly got high when singing this song ... has
this bevada touch to it.Picture on the CD shows Abhishek clad in
traditional attire on a high, dancing with a glass on his head. This
is very much folky and I believe Mani would do the needful to this
song onscreen.

Mayya - Maryem Toller, Chinmayee, Keerthi Dialect Coach - Devika

To all those who watched the audio release function of GURU on tv news
channels... Remeber ARR describing the album... gujrati turkish mix
this was the song he was talking about. An item number with a fusion
touch.Maryem Toller's voice sounds very prominent, where as Chinmayees
voice is like a whisper. And dont miss the flute bit, after the first
few lines. Best way to appreciate this song is to listen on
headphones, or on speakers that are spread wide apart. Its like music
traverses from left to right and back to left. Especially when Maryem
goes mayya mayya and eheh eheh. And listen to Maryam giggle in the
end, when the chorus goes `Mayya Mayya'. Item number, to be picturised
on Mallika Sherawat. Now guyzzz dnt drool just reading tht name... we
r talking about the music here... so kindly control!! ;)

Ay Hairathe - Hariharan, Alka Yagnik Additional Voices -AR Rahman,
Aslam Mohammed

Begins with the similar tune of Tere Bina where MAST MAST is replaced
by CHASM CHASM

Hakeem,

You have rights to your opinion, but don't think that everybody thinks
like you.

ARR is ARR for what he has done to film music. Given a situation I
strongly believe ARR composes the most innovative. I can give
examples, but the list is endless.

Even if ARR is going to create a private album, it will be a theme
based or situation based. He can't compose a fanaa in Vande Mataram.

Enjoy music. And take time and think before you send your opinions.
You boast of your collections of ARR and rights. Rights is something
which everybody has and believe me there are Big Big brothers to you
in this group or atleast as good as you by any means.
Having been such a good fan of ARR you should by now know the grows
with time effect of ARR's music.

And you might not like Guru's music at all. But look the response it
is getting already. If you don't like it, just say that you don't
like it. Don't generalise.

Unknown facts of Rahman - Read It Now!
http://geniusarr.blogspot.com/2006/11/unknown-facts-of-rahman-read-it-n\
ow.html Whenever you talk
about Rahman life, there is a lot of things happend around him other
than music. A lot of great people talk about him because of his
simplcity and divine towards work. Since I'm a die hard fan of Rahman, I
was following his updates and news about him since he begin his career.
In this section I would share with you facts you might not know about
Rahman or a recap of his past.

On his trip to Delhi to receive the Padma Shri, he offered namaaz at
the Hazrath Nizamuddin Dargah. In 1995, his mother chose Saira Banu as
his bride. The couple have two daughters.

Rahman zealously guards his privacy. His house is protected from prying
eyes by an imposing gate and guests are ushered through a side gate into
a small and austere office. Ask him to pose for a photograph in his
well-manicured lawn, and he very politely but firmly shakes his head.
He just wants to be left alone with his music, said James Noell, a
long-time aide. He would rather the hype and hoopla surrounded his music
than his persona.

But his shy demeanour hides a generous heart. Associates remember him
stopping at a busy Mumbai intersection to give alms to beggars lining
the street. He just thrust his hand into his pockets and gave them all
the money, said one. Another time in Chennai he got out of his car to
help a cyclist who lay in an epileptic seizure.

Source by E Vijayalakshmi, Chennai, All the world is a keyboard .

I worked with him for 58 nights for Taal and he would compose music
from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. He knows technique, has a rare sense of sound and
a great ear. He can make any besu

have sung beautifully for his albums but have not done well later.

After Roja I was the first Hindi film director to approach him with a
project in 1994. It was for Shikhar with Jackie Shroff and Shah Rukh
Khan which unfortunately did not materialise. When I met him for the
first time I found him so divine and so simple. Let us work first, then
we'll talk about money, he told me then. It is strange now that he is
the highest-paid music director in the history of the Indian music
industry!

I love him both as a composer and as a friend. He is very sweet to talk
to. The only thing is you talk and he listens! (Laughs.)

He's divine and simple - by Subhash Ghai

When we were working on Bombay, the mixing was being held up since the
background score was not ready. For three days, Rahman sat in his studio
from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., but nothing would work. He needed to deliver a
score which would bind the film, but was having a creative block. There
was some tension. He tried fiddling around with the theme he had
composed, but nothing worked. So we would sit and chat for hours about
things other than

jpg music.

We decided not to work on the fourth day. At 10 p.m. he invited me over
to his place. We sat chatting again, but this time I felt there was
something which had not been there on the other days. He said, Let's go
into the studio. The theme was played again. He said, Let's put lyrics
into it and let's have a song. That was absolutely brilliant. We had a
lyrical rendition of the background score. Rahman must have been truly
inspired to do that.

I remember another instance connected with Bombay. We had recorded
Hariharan for the Uyire song picturised on Arvind Swamy and I was mixing
it. As we had used a lot of electronics, I was cleaning up the track of
all breathing sounds and 'dirt'. When Rahman heard it, the first thing
he said was, There is something missing. I told him about my cleaning
exercise and he said, What the song needs is a lot of air. So I put
all the 'dirt' back, and truly the song had much more life especially
since it was picturised against the beautiful forts and sea. With my
cleaning I had taken the life out of the song! Even now I get goose
bumps when I think about it.

Rahman is humble and very generous with money. He hates to see people
suffer. I think his philosophy is that people should derive happiness
from his music, even if it is a sad tune. He has this tremendous need to
be perfect. Of course, we also differ in our views; I criticise his
music if I feel it lacks his signature and this irritates him
sometimes.

Best of Both Worlds: A.R. Rahman on His Global Projects
[http://www.indiawest.com/onweb/data/upimages/AR-Rahman-1117.gif] By
LISA TSERING
India-West Staff Reporter

A.R. Rahman may be considered India's leading fusion artist - he's
equally adept working in Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, Telugu and English
films, and he's composed the scores for two major stage musicals,
Bombay Dreams, which had three separate productions - and Lord of the
Rings, which opened in Toronto this March and will open in London in
September of 2007. The 39-year-old composer feels his future lies not in
fusion, but in the respectful compartmentalization of separate styles.

Upcoming projects include a video set to Rahman's Pray for me,
brother, a song he wrote and sung for the UN's Millennium Campaign:
Voices Against Poverty. We have to push our governments to do what they
have to do for us, he says in a promotional video for the campaign. But
there are no immediate plans for a U.S. tour. The tour we'd planned to
have is not going to happen. There are so many films we have to finish.

Excerpts from a recent freewheeling interview in Los Angeles follow:

Q: You've been trained in Western music and Indian. In your mind, is it
a challenge to switch back and forth?

A: In the beginning, when I did compositions such as Roja, I spent a
huge amount of time trying to focus on one genre. People used to
complain, 'Go to Rahman and he's going to take ages to do your music.'
But all those things used to help me create a style. Ten years later,
some of those songs are considered textbook songs today, which people
want me to go back to over and over. Bombay Dreams was a huge shift
again. I can't say that I'm comfortable yet, but I do have a little bit
of focus and now I can compartmentalize it.

As the world keeps turning, it keeps getting smaller.
Still.
Indeed, due to such varied forces as the Internet, digital
technology and continued cross-cultural pollination, more
Americans are grooving to world-music styles today than they
were 10 years ago. Or even five years ago.
One form that has burrowed into the American pop-culture
consciousness in the last couple of years is Indian music.
And, within the broader Indian-music scene, one sub-genre
getting attention is the fusion of classical Indian music
with modern rhythms.

Perhaps the most accomplished of these fusionists is A.R.
Rahman, who began his career as a writer of commercial
jingles and went on to become India's most popular
composer of film scores.
Until the last year, Rahman's biggest claim to fame
was his collaboration with Andrew Lloyd Webber on the London
and Broadway productions of "Bombay Dreams''
in 2002 and 2004, respectively. Webber produced, Rahman
composed the music.
But Rahman's profile got even higher when he struck
the seeming unlikely collaboration with the Finnish folk
group Varttina to compose the music for the $23 million,
four-hour-long stage production of "Lord of the
Rings,'' which opened in Toronto on March 23.
Rahman's unique synthesis of traditional Indian music
with more contemporary rhythms inspired Sidney Fallon, wife
of Eastern Michigan University president John Fallon III, to
seek out a meeting with Rahman during a recent trip to
India. Rahman and the Fallons had a mutual Indian
acquaintance, and the three parties began discussing ways
for young Americans to learn more about Indian culture.
They decided on a pair of benefit concerts by Rahman and
fellow Indian artists Sekar, Kalish Kher and Vasundhara Das.
The first concert will be at the EMU Convocation Center on
Saturday, the second in Dayton, Ohio on April 22.
The show, "Wake Up! A.R. Rahman with 150 All
Stars,'' will bring together Rahman's works
on stage through colorful costumes and set designs, along
with Indian and American singers and dancers. Rahman also
will perform with the Global Rhythm All Stars, a group of
more than 150 American artists that have performed with
numerous Grammy-winning artists.
Joining Rahman on stage will be cellist V.R. Sekar,
founder of the Madras String Quartet; singer/actress
Vasundhara Das; and singer/actor Kailash Kher.Regards,Shah Navas

[arr] New photo sharing website - Riya.com (now google's)

2006-03-21 Thread Shah Navas G

Most of you should be aware of this - www.riya.com , a face recognition based photo sharing service(Similar to Flickr)This has been recently acquired by google. So we can expect this to grow in to a versatile product in future. Still its very good already. We can just point or select a particular part of the photo and add tags to that. And its face recognition phot will eventually recognise that face in any of the photos. That would be great to search all ARR or group photos and we can know the name each person on the photo once it is tagged. This is still invite only and in beta, but "beta" the google way. I am finding it better than Flickr in more ways already.Do try this once and get a feel.Regards,Shah Navas

[arr] Rashtrapathi Bhavan Plays Rahmans'

Art and Rashtrapati Bhavan

 The Mughal Gardens in Rashtrapati
Bhavan with all their flora are a treat to the human mind but its beauty
doubles whenever a cultural programme is organized in the Central Lawns. We
organized a Violin and vocal recital by Dr. L. Subramaniam, a Flute recital by
Pt. Hari Prasad Chaurasia and very recently we had a jugalbandi between Ustaad
Bismillah Khan and Dr. Soma Ghosh, a vocalist. On these occasions, I felt that
the Gardens looked beautiful under the spell of music. To ensure that the magic
of music continues to be there in the Gardens on all days, a Musical Fountain
has recently been added to the Mughal Gardens, where the fountains dance to the
tune of Ustaad Bismillah Khan's shehnai, Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma's Santoor, the
music of A. R. Rehman and Shri Duraisamy Iyengar's Veena. I really believe that
without music, dance and theatre the world would not be the sameRegards,Shah Navas

			If
the victory march of Rang De Basanti continues the same way as last 7

grossers of the current decade. Just have a look at the ADJUSTED NET
GROSS of the Top 5 hits so far:
Gadar Ek Prem Katha - 91.5 croresKabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham - 64 croresKoi Mil Gaya - 49.3 croresKaho Naa Pyaar Hai - 46. 2 croresNo Entry - 44.8 crores
With 6 weeks total of RDB standing at 44.2 crores
and the movie still going strong, it should be a matter of couple of
weeks at maximum when it should reach the fourth place after Koi Mil
Gaya. And if it has luck and audience on its side, who knows it may
even break into Top 3 by toppling KMG's total of 49.3 crores.

[arr] Toronto Turns to Gandalf, Singing Hobbits to Lure Back Tourists

2006-03-14 Thread Shah Navas G

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=1082sid=axavrr.6il6Qrefer=canadaToronto Turns to Gandalf, Singing Hobbits to Lure Back Tourists March 15 (Bloomberg) -- Now that the Hobbits have saved
Middle Earth in the Academy Award-winning ``The Lord of the
Rings'' film trilogy, Canadians are looking to the Little Folk
with pointed ears to help revive Toronto's C$4 billion ($3.5
billion) tourism industry.
A 3 1/2-hour musical based on J.R.R. Tolkien's novels about
the journeys of Gandalf the wizard and Hobbit Frodo Baggins has
its gala opening March 23. The show, in previews since last
month, is Toronto's first Broadway-scale world premiere, a C$27
million extravaganza with actors on stilts and machines that
blow smoke and confetti to the upper balconies.
Tourism officials expect ``The Lord of the Rings,'' with
advance ticket sales of C$15 million, to lure visitors to
Canada's biggest city. Business dwindled as the Canadian dollar
rose by almost a third against the U.S. currency in the past
four years.
``This is a big opportunity,'' says Tourism Toronto Chief
Executive Officer Bruce MacMillan, whose group will spend C$3
million over two years advertising the musical in Canada, the
U.S., Europe and Japan. ``It really is positioning Toronto as
one of North America's great cultural and artistic
destinations.''
The number of U.S. visitors to Toronto has dropped to 17
million during the past five years from about 21 million. Beyond
the Canadian dollar's rise, an outbreak of severe acute
respiratory syndrome that killed 44 people in 2003 also hurt
tourism, MacMillan says.
The films based on Tolkien's novels, directed by Peter
Jackson and starring British actor Ian McKellen as Gandalf, rank
among the 20 highest-grossing movies in the U.S., according to
trade publication Variety.
Fellowship
Fans already are making plans for the stage performance at
the Princess of Wales theater.
Jessica Burke, 31, will travel from her home in Staten
Island, New York, to attend in July. She'll be joined by about
1,000 other Tolkien enthusiasts at the Gathering of the
Fellowship convention, which was moved to Toronto from Denver
because of the play.
To succeed, the musical will need a wider audience, says
Jerry Wasserman, a critic for the Province newspaper in
Vancouver.
``You can launch a show like `The Lord of the Rings' with
the fact that there are all those Tolkien fans out there,'' says
Wasserman, who also is a theater professor at the University of
British Columbia. ``But a stage show with a C$30 million budget
is obviously going to have to attract a lot more people than
just the fans of the book.''
Revolving Stage
Among the show's attractions is a circular revolving stage
that breaks off into 17 lifting pieces to carry the cast of
about 65 to different levels. There also are rope ladders and
curtains that descend from the ceilings. Tickets are C$78 to
C$125, in line with New York prices.
English director Matthew Warchus, whose credits include New
York productions of Sam Shepard's ``True West'' and Yasmina
Reza's ``Art,'' co-wrote the play with Shaun McKenna to go with
music by Indian composer A.R. Rahman and Finnish folk group
Varttina. The cast includes Brent Carver, a Tony Award winner
for his 1993 lead role in Broadway's ``Kiss of the Spider
Woman,'' as Gandalf.
Irish producer Kevin Wallace first planned to take the
musical to the U.K. Toronto was selected when he couldn't secure
the Dominion Theatre in London's West End, where ``We Will Rock
You,'' based on the music of Queen, is booked into October.
Wallace, 48, is working with Canadian producer David
Mirvish, 61, the son of a Toronto retailer. Mirvish brought
``Mamma Mia!'' to Toronto, while Wallace produced ``Cats'' and
``Jesus Christ Superstar'' in the U.S. and the U.K.
Nine-Month Guarantee
``If `The Lord of The Rings' really does put Toronto back
on the map internationally, there's a spinoff and benefit for
all the other theaters,'' Wallace says.
The musical is guaranteed to run at least nine months
before going to another city, and may last five to 10 years, he
says. The longest-running production in Toronto was ``The
Phantom of the Opera'' at about 10 years.
MacMillan projects that the play will bring in as much as
C$100 million in revenue in its first year.
One problem may be the show's length: three hours and 40
minutes, including two intermissions. The performance already
has been scaled back from four hours.
``I thought it was tremendous, but was just way too long,''
said Kim Beck, 47, after a March 8 preview. ``I have to get up
for work tomorrow.'' Regards,Shah Navas

[arr] Music for stage version of Rings has different edge - ARR

2006-03-10 Thread Shah Navas G

Composer A.R. Rahman says music for stage version of Rings has different edge

		Canadian Press
		Published: Thursday, March 09, 2006

MUMBAI, India (AP) - Leading Indian composer A.R. Rahman says the music
for the lavish stage production of The Lord of the Rings opening in
Toronto this month has a unique flavour due to his collaboration with
Finnish folk group Varttina.

Rahman had earlier composed music for Bombay Dreams - a musical
about India's movie industry by Andrew Lloyd Webber that was a hit in
London's West End, but struggled on Broadway.

Working on the music for the stage version of J.R.R. Tolkien's
trilogy was challenging, Rahman told Mumbai-based DNA newspaper in an
interview published Thursday.

"I have been working on this for more than two years," said Rahman,
adding this was the longest project he had been involved with.

While the Rings stage production is not a musical, it uses music
extensively and Rahman has said he was approached to bring an
orchestral tone to the folk music of Varttina.

The show, with a cast of nearly 60 actors, cost upward of $23
million US and opens at Toronto's Princess of Wales Theatre on March
23.

Rahman said one thing the score would not have was pop music.

"It was an interesting collaboration," Rahman said about working
with Varttina. "To those who have heard my music before, I'd say don't
expect Shakalaka Baby or Chaiyya Chaiyya."

The two songs were Bollywood favourites and featured in the musical Bombay Dreams.

The 40-year-old composer has won several Indian music awards and composed music for more than 120 Bollywood movies.

	Karishma Upadhyay

  	Wednesday, March 08, 2006 20:22 IST

AR Rahman, who was in Mumbai briefly, explains where and whyhe's been missing all this while

The trademark curly locks are gone but AR Rahman continues to be
as shy as ever. Ask him about the new look and he mumbles, "I had
shaved my head before leaving for Haj in January so my hair is still
growing back."

Now that his new look has been explained, it's time to talk about
the one project that he has been involved with for the longest time -
the `Lord of the Rings' musical stage version.. "I have been working on
this for more than two years," he says about the nearly $28 million
stage epic which previewed on February 4. The musical opens in Toronto
on March 28 and moves to London next year.

Rahman has collaborated on the play's 15 tracks with Varttina, a
folk band from Finland. "It was an interesting collaboration, he says,
adding, "to those who've heard my music before, I'd say don't expect
`Shakalaka Baby' or `Chaiya Chaiya'. But would there be any Indian
elements in the musical. "Of course, there is a very interesting
juncture of the play for which I recorded some alaaps with Shankar
Mahadevan," he says with a twinkle in his eye.

After a long gap, Rahman rocked the nation again with `Rang De
Basanti', and he is obviously satisfied. "Even after so many years,
it's nice to hear my work playing in every street in the country."

So why doesn't he do more work in Bollywood? "Simply because I
don't have the time," he says, without skipping a beat. Because of the
numerous international projects? "I know that a lot of people are upset
that I've been concentrating on international work. I'd like to ask
them if they wouldn't have grabbed these opportunities if they had been
in my place? Also, at some level, I'm promoting Indian cinema just like
Shekhar Kapur or Aishwarya Rai. What's wrong with that?"

[arr] I am eternally thankful to Rahman - Rakyesh

2006-02-16 Thread Shah Navas G

http://www.hindu.com/mp/2006/02/16/stories/2006021601710100.htm. Rakeysh says A.R. Rahman who has used the Gurbani to haunting effect "has created magic. He has used location-centric sound, for instance, the Gurbani in the Golden Temple, Gregorian chants in a church and so on. He has reached inside the story and extracted a kind of depth that I am eternally thankful for; he has kept the pace of the film with music. If I were to put it metaphysically, the visuals are the physical representation of a film while the music is the soul."The film has used sync sound which, Rakeysh says, "is the way films should be made. That is how films are made world over and just because we have dubbed our films forever, it does not make it the right way to make films! In India, there are problems because we are a crowded country and there are not many sound stages but we should move towards location sound." .Regards,Shah Navas

[arr] ‘I was dying to write a film like this’ - PRASOON JOSH

2006-02-15 Thread Shah Navas G

http://www.telegraphindia.com/1060215/asp/calcutta/story_5849869.asp`I was dying to write a film like this'IAdman PRASOON JOSH tells Pratim D. Gupta how penning Rang De Basanti was about concept and craft, passion and poetryAlice Patten and Aamir Khan with others in a moment from Rang De BasantiThodi si dhool meri dharti ki mere watan kiThodi si khushboo baurai se mast pawan kiThodi si dhondhane waali dhak-dhak dhak-dhak dhak-dhak saanseinJin mein ho junoon junoon woh boondein laal lahoo kiYeh sab tu mila mila lePhir rang tu khila khila leAur mohe tu rang de basanti yaaraMohe tu rang de basanti…When Prasoon Joshi was penning these magic words to awaken a generation, he was not just writing the lyrics of a film song. For him, this was another attempt to arouse the youth of the country, something he has been trying for long through his advertising work as the regional creative head of McCann Erickson (South and South-East Asia)."No single movement can have as much impact on people as popular culture can," says the man of the moment from Mumbai. It's not that Prasoon got into song writing to cash in on the popular culture named Bollywood. "Poetry has been a passion for me since childhood," he reveals. "I have been writing mostly in Hindi and Urdu and sometimes also in English. Two of my books in Hindi poetry also got published. My first song writing happened with the band Silk Route for their album Boondein. Then, I went on to write for the hit Shubha Mudgal albums, Ab Ke Saawan and Mann Ke Manjeere."Penning lyrics for films started with Rajkumar Santoshi's Lajja, followed by Vipul Shah's Aankhen, Kunal Kohli's Hum Tum and Revathy's Phir Milenge."With Rang De Basanti, I have penned the dialogues for the first time apart from writing the lyrics," says Prasoon. "Although it was a new thing for me, it wasn't that difficult since dialogues have always played a big role in all my advertising work, from Thanda matlab Coca Cola to Chloromint's Dobara mat poochhna."But there's a difference between writing dialogues for a 30-second commercial and a three-hour-long movie, admits Prasoon. "It's like the difference between writing a haiku and a long poem," he says. "Each has its own challenges but what advertising does teach you is the economy of words. If you carefully follow the Rang De dialogues, they are not lengthy, very easy and short. No one is a born writer, everyone imbibes his style through his experiences and it is advertising that has helped me develop my style."A style that allows Aamir Khan and gang to mouth some of the most natural and thought-provoking lines in recent Bollywood memory. A sample: "We have one foot in the past and one foot in the future; so we are pissing on the present" — DJ (Aamir), in endearing Punjabi-Hindi.The feel, the flowInitially, though, it wasn't easy for Prasoon to get his writing right for Rang De. "It took me a lot of time to get into the groove," he recalls. "The youth, the anger, I had a lot of discussions with Aamir and Rakeysh (Mehra) before I got it right. Once I got the hang of things, then it became quite effortless for me."Another challenge was to write songs for A.R. Rahman. "What I found quite unique about him was his improvisational abilities; he would change the songs till the very last minute," Prasoon recalls. "Like for the Lata Mangeshkar song Lukachhupi, he came and wanted me to change the words on the day of the recording. I had to go back to the same thought process that the song had demanded. Also, Rahman never writes in conventional meter and has this unconventional way of writing music. That makes writing songs for him even more challenging."Prasoon feels a great sense of pride in announcing that all the songs of Rang De Basanti were his concepts. "That made writing the lyrics very special," he says. "I was expressing my thoughts, whether it was Abhi abhi hua yakeen or Har dil mein boond boond karta hai H2SO4… I was not writing for any character. They were not lip-synced situational numbers, they were all conceptual songs."Prasoon JoshiWhat made the UTV project stand out for Prasoon and inspired him come up with unforgettable lines was the motivation, he feels. "I myself have always felt that India has a lot of potential and the youth of the country can be the only guiding force," he explains. "I was dying to write a film like this. So, I took a lot of responsibility when I was writing the dialogues and the lyrics. It was really special."Although Rang De's success has opened the floodgates of offers to write for Bollywood, Prasoon's taking it nice and easy. "I wear too many hats and have to handle 12 countries in my region as the creative director of McCann," he reveals. "And we have got so many new accounts like Liril, Britannia and Intel. So, as of now, I just have Fanaah where I have written the songs composed by Jatin-Lalit."If film accolades have been pouring in, Prasoon's ad work has also won him international acclaim. He has been voted one of the

[arr] Godparents: Boney Sridevi

2006-02-01 Thread Shah Navas G

http://www.tamilstar.com/news/publish/article_1851.shtmlSridevi and her husband Boney Kapoor are very much in the film business
still. Boney Kapoor is a film financier, like his father before him,
and has financed many of brother Anil Kapoor's films. Now Anil and
Sridevi help out producers in distress, producers who have
half-completed films and have run out of finances. Anil-Sridevi first
study the antecedents of the film makers, the producer, director,
music-director, stars, their track-records, present popularity,
projected saleability, and so on.

The view the completed portion of the movie and decide if they want to
invest any more funds, revive the movie (which would have otherwise
never seen the light of day, and earn a big profit. Truly a win-win
situation for all! One such movie which caught their attention is
Ajith's Godfather. Sridevi is convinced of the star value of Godfather
with Ajith and Asin in the lead, direction by K.S. Ravikumar and music
by A.R. Rahman. With Paramasivan turning out to be a hit, Sridevi's
confidence is further boosted. Sridevi has always maintained a low
profile and does not want any publicity for this godmother act of hers!Regards,Shah Navas

[arr] 'Rang De Basanti' audio sales pickup

			This
has happened in the past and this is happening again. So many times it
has been seen that audio sales for a movie picks up in a big way after
the movie's release, especially if the movie has been appreciated.
Same has happened with A.R.Rehman's 'Rang De
Basanti' for which audio is now selling like hot cakes, a week into the
movie hitting the marquee. Rehman's music was always situational and
the way all 8-9 tracks were blended into the movie's screenplay, it was
bound to mesmerize the audience in a big way.
Result is that today music lovers are showing a renewed interest in the film's music due to a wide range of songs in it.Regards,Shah Navas

[arr] Lord of the Rings: live on stage

2006-02-01 Thread Shah Navas G

http://www.cjnews.com/viewarticle.asp?id=8405 Lord of the Rings: live on stage

"Tolkien is talmudic," professes David Mirvish, head of Mirvish
Productions. "He understood the sense of fairness and rightness, of the
importance in community."
What inspires Mirvish to such gushing is nothing less than the most
expensive stage show in history, at $27 million. His stage adaptation
of The Lord of the Rings (LOTR) is primed and ready for a world
première in Toronto on March 23, with previews running for five weeks
on Feb. 2 at the Princess of Wales Theatre.
In an interview at his office, Mirvish almost appears giddy when he
speaks about Tolkien's famous trilogy coming to downtown Toronto.
"Nothing has been done on this type of scale before," he says. "I'm
calling this epic. It's not a conventional musical."
Mirvish and company have been avoiding the dreaded "m"-word for obvious
reasons: ardent LOTR fans cringe at the prospect of prancing Hobbits
and Orcs high-stepping to show tunes. To quell those fears, the
creative team in Toronto approached The Lord of the Rings with a deep
respect for the original text when they adapted the books for the stage.
"And this sure isn't a conventional musical when you have the artistic
director inspired by Tom Waits," Mirvish says, before cautioning that
musical tastes will span a worldly spectrum.
In fact, it was the music that first convinced Mirvish the Tolkien text
was worth adapting. Two years ago, Mirvish heard a sample of the music
to be included in the adaptation. Composed by two distinct
collaborators – Indian composer A.R. Rahman and Finnish group Värttinä
– the music "had an otherworldly quality to it that made me think `This
is magical,'" Mirvish recalls.
The legendary producer, famous for bringing to Toronto The Lion King,
Mamma Mia! and The Producers, understood the risk of staging a show as
expansive as The Lord of the Rings. But smart gambles have always been
part of Mirvish's work schedule. "My credibility is on the line here,"
he says, half-laughing. "But I'm stepping up to a challenge I've never
engaged in before."
The challenge also relates to what Mirvish is risking financially. He
invested $1 million of his own money into the production, while also
convincing Tourism Toronto and the Ontario government to invest $3
million each. "The government didn't see it as a question of supporting
the arts but as a job creation and tourism program," Mirvish points
out, adding how the politicians will see a return on their investment
by the fourth week of the show – if sales progress as expected.
And Mirvish is convinced the show's grand spectacle won't disappoint.
With a cast of 55 and 14 musical numbers, The Lord of the Rings
stretches to three hours of battles, music and dance. The set resembles
a tree trunk, with movable parts allowing the Fellowship to traverse
grassy, rocky or uphill terrain. Special effects colour the fight
scenes and creative lighting adds lustre to terrific monsters such as
the winged Balrog.
The only standout star in the cast is Tony Award-winning Brent Carver,
a Canadian theatre veteran who excels in every role he plays. Another
noted actor is Michael Therriault, seen recently in Mirvish's The
Producers and playing the slimy Gollum in The Lord of the Rings.
With any spectacle, the music must act as the sweeping soundtrack to
the dramatic action. Mini-symphonies carry the battle sequences, and a
percussion-heavy number plays during the Helm's Deep sequence.
Quarterbacking the creative component of the show is Kevin Wallace,
co-producer and chief architect. When he read an early draft of the
stage adaptation by Shaun McKenna in November 2001, he was so impressed
by the writing quality he secured the underlying theatre rights. He
corralled director Kevin Marchus, designer Rob Howell, musical
supervisor Christopher Nightingale and choreographer Peter Darling (of
Billy Elliot fame).
"Everyone is working with a clear agenda," Wallace tells The

CHENNAI: Less than 18 hours before the show was
to begin the rain gods had rebelled without cause the last time around,
sending hours of hard work, blood, sweat and tears down the drain.
But, `Netru Indru Nalai', a musical directed
by Mani Ratnam, with music by A.R. Rahman, lighting by Rajiv Menon,
sets by Sabu Cyril, choreography by Kala master, costumes by Anu and
Sai, and co-ordinated by Vasanth, will return with a bang on February 5
at Jeppiar Engineering College.

Bigger and better

"Bigger and better," says Vandana of The
Banyan. With a cast and crew that includes the likes of Kamal Haasan,
Revathy, Shobana, Simran, Madhavan, Vivek Oberoi, Shilpa Shetty, Shaam,
Ramesh Arvind, Simbu, `Jayam' Ravi, Bharath, `Kaadhal' Sandhya, Shriya,
Reema Sen, Pooja, Diya, Lakshmi Rai, Navya Nair, Genelia, Vishal and
Ragasya along with singers Srinivas, Karthik and Blaaze.
Eighty dancers from Kala's troupe have been
rehearsing all day for over a week, as the dance master checks the
reference videos shot during practice the last time around.

 "Because
they had practised before, it's easier this timearound. But, they still
need to refresh their memory because it was a long while ago," says
Kala, as her dancers go about practising steps for `Rakkamma Kaiyya
Thattu ... ', which will feature Simbu and Simran. "Never before have I seen a show where
huge sets, including a ship and a train, disappear and appear on stage
in a matter of seconds," she adds.

Committed film stars

Vasanth is quite excited about the participation from the film stars and their unflinching commitment.
"Simran is performing for the first time after
her marriage. Not just her, every single star has been extremely
co-operative without making us feel obliged," he says.
"The show stopped when the curtain was about to rise. They now want to complete that unfinished mission," he adds.

"They say it's a part of their social responsibility and we shouldn't thank them," says Vandana of The Banyan.
"But, it is our duty to thank the stars, Madras
Round Table 1 which is supporting us to build a community health centre
at Kovalam, Jeppiar Engineering College and director Regina Wilson, who
has treated us like family and provided us logistical support the
second time around, and of course Vijay TV."

"We were obviously distraught when we suffered losses but it was Mani who was so confident and gave us all the support.
It's the best gift anyone could have given us —
six months of his life, four hours a day. It's been his idea to
merchandise it and take the musical around the world," she says.

`Netru Indru Nalai' will also tour the US and UK during the year.

A.R. Rahman has composed a special song for The Banyan, sung by him and a Bosnian singer Alma.

Blaaze, Srinivas and Karthik have come together to put together a track exclusively for the musical.
Santosh Sivan and Alphonse have shot a film
directed by Trilok and Sharadha on the occasion and Real Image has done
the sound design.

The two-and-a-half hour show will be telecast on Vijay TV and be made available on DVDs.Regards,Shah Navas

[arr] Mani Ratnam puts IR on higher pedestal - author interprets...

2006-01-30 Thread Shah Navas G

http://www.chennaionline.com/film/Events/2005/03maniratnam.asp Mani Ratnam on Ilayaraja, RehmanNot too many people in the world would have had the opportunity to work with two top music directors of the world - both Ilayaraja and A R Rehman. And not many would readily answer a question on how to rate the two, and who was better in comparison. This is a question that one would prefer to duck. However, ace director Mani Ratnam was candid in his assessment of the two music directors, when fans and music buffs posed this question at Landmark where a collection of DVDs of his films was released."Both Ilayaraja and Rehman are fantastic music directors and I had the good fortune to work with two great music directors," Mani said.Advertisement MMT - Jodi Jamao Contest "However, they are poles apart - perhaps very little in common," added the director. When he said they are worlds apart, someone wanted to know whether he was referring to Ilayaraja working in the day, and Rehman late at night. Mani laughed and said he was referring to their style of working. In fact, initially he had go through a culture shock, when Rehman was signed up for 'Roja'. Ilayaraja, once he made up his mind, would not make too many changes. With Rehman, it was different. He would keep adding to the song. However, Mani Ratnam, put Ilayaraja on a higher pedestal, and lavished praise on the maestro's re-recording, so important for a film. Ilayaraja would look at the scene once, and immediately start giving notes to his assistants, as a bunch of musicians, hovering around him, would collect the notes for their instrument and go to their places. When the orchestra played out the notes, they would be perfect, not just in harmony but also in timing - the background score would commence exactly where it should and end at the exact place required, pointed out Mani Ratnam, amidst applause. Ilayaraja was a genius, he said, who could compose music with just one look at the scene. However, for a director, there was just one handicap. "Ilayaraja will listen to you as you explain the scene, and what he intends to convey. Once the film rolls, Ilayaraja's gaze will be on the screen and a few seconds later, papers would go to the musicians giving them the score, and then there would be no further changes. A director can be taken by surprise at the speed of events. If at all you want to convey anything to Ilayaraja, it must be before he watches the shot (before the background score is added) on to the screen," said Mani amidst both laughter and applause. There were several questions flung at Mani on why music was important to him and why he needed songs in hs films. Mani said he couldn't imagine his films without music. "Music is an integral part of my films. If you look at 'Anjali', 'Mouna Ragam' or 'Thalapathi' without music, it would be a different experience for the viewers. Similarly, Rehman's songs have been a big contributing factor too. Howeer, we directors do have problems in providing for songs while we do the screenplay! The toughest thing is to break the story to provide a song. I would like to do away with songs, but everyone wants songs in an Indian film."Looking at P C Sreeram, who was seated in the front row, "Among the few who have made films without songs is Sreeram, who provided Kuruthipunal," Mani said."I like listening to songs, even watching clips of songs on TV but the tough thing is to provide songs in films," he added.Regards,Shah Navas

[arr] Mani Ratnam to direct Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan?

Mani Ratnam to direct Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan?
29th Jan 2006 13.00 IST
By ApunKaChoice Bureau

Reports are that ace director Mani Ratnam is planning a new Hindi film
with Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan in the lead.

Reports are fuelled by the news that last week Ratnam was in Mumbai to
give finishing touches to this ambitious project titled Guru .

Ash and Abhishek were earlier paired in Kuch Naa Kaho and are now
doing J. P. Dutta `s Umrao Jaan .

Rumors are also rife that the Junior Bachchan will have two heroines
in the film – Ash and Vidya Balan and the search for the antagonist is
on, and John Abraham seems to be the front-runner.

A R Rahman will be the music director with Gulzar 's lyrics. Rajeev
Menon will be the cameraman and he is teaming up with Ratnam after 10
long years after `Bombay'.

Anurag Kashyap will helm the Hindi dialogues and the film is set in
Mumbai.

With `Guru', which will go on the floors in March, Ratnam hopes to
prove his detractors wrong that he has not been able to taste
commercial success in Bollywood so far.

Shah Navas

Rang De Basanti stars talks about the movie - Part I
IndiaGlitz [Friday, January 27, 2006]

Mehra thanks Ronnie, Aamir for Rang De Basanti

Director Rakeysh OmPrakash Mehra of Rang De Basanti showered high
praise indeed on two persons at the premiere yesterday of the
excellent film which opened across cinema halls in India and worldwide
this morning.

Mehra said, There was a time when I thought that I would never be
able to make Rang De Basanti -- I thought it would end up in the
dabba! And that would certainly have happened had it not been for two
persons. The first is producer Ronnie Screwalla of UTV. I could never
have found a better producer than him. He was one hundred percent
committed to making Rang De Basanti an excellent film, and didn't want
us to spare any cost or effort. So all thanks to Ronnie for making this
film possible.

And the second person Mehra thanked is the film's lead star Aamir
Khan. He said, When Aamir heard the story, he was touched. And he
only does films that have stories that touch his heart. I remember he
told me, 'Nothing on earth can stop us from making this film!'. Their
support is the main reason why Rang De Basanti has seen light of day
today, and I am indeed grateful to both, Mehra said.

Mehra said that when he was casting for the main roles, the moment he
saw Soha and Alice, I fell in love with both -- they were just so
perfect for the roles! He has high praise for Kunal Kapoor and Atul
Kulkarni too, as also for Sharman and, of course, Siddharth, who is
already a superstar in the Telugu film industry, and already has last
year's biggest Telugu hit to his name.

Mehra also had the highest praise for cinematographer Binod Pradhan,
whom he described as The best cinematographer in India ... rather,
the world! -- look at the wonderful job he has done in Rang De Basanti!.

RDB is a cult film, says Kirron Kher

Actor Kirron Kher, who plays mother to Aamir and the other kids in
Rang De Basanti, is delighted to have been part of the film. At the
RDB premiere in Mumbai, she said, Rang De Basanti is a wonderfully
different film. I'm so proud to be associated with it! It's a film
that takes me back to my college and university days in Chandigarh .
It's a film that needed to be made today, It's a film that's
parth-breaking, It's a cult film, and I'm extremely proud to have been
part of it.

After Rang De Basanti, Kirron Kher's next film is another biggie,
Karan Johar's Kabhi Alvida Na Kahna, which many were saying will be
be the biggest hit of the year. But that was before RDB was released,
and going by word of mouth endorsements that RDB has been receiving,
all one can say is, only time will tell!

[arr] Rang De Basanti opens huge all over

2006-01-27 Thread Shah Navas G

http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/hindi/article/20019.html Rang De Basanti opens huge all over Indiaglitz [Friday, January 27, 2006] As expected, Aamir Khan's 'Rang De Basanti' has opened huge all over. 'Sone Pe Suhaaga' is a flurry of positive reviews that it has garnered from almost segments of media. Aamir Khan's brilliant act (unsurprisingly) is the talk of town while RDB is a rare instance of an Aamir Khan movie when rest of the starcast [Kunal Kapoor, Siddhartha, Sharman Joshi, Atul Kulkarni, Soha Ali Khan] too has been unanimously applauded. With every multiplex flooding their screens with a 'Rang De Basanti' show every hour, the recovery of the movie should be super-quick. Also unlike 'Mangal Pandey' where the movie showed a decline after a first couple of weeks, the graph of RDB is expected to be different due to all-round positive reviews and wonderful word of mouth. Finally distributors and exhibitioners should heave a smile of relief with a universal hit in the making.Regards,Shah Navas

[arr] Rang De Basanti Stars talks about the movie - Part II

2006-01-27 Thread Shah Navas G

Rang De Basanti Stars talks about the movie - Part II IndiaGlitz [Friday, January 27, 2006] Great working with Aamir, says SiddharthAlthough he plays a second lead in RDB to Aamir Khan, young actor Siddharth is already a superstar in Telugu films, having notched up the biggest Telugu hit of last year.Speaking briefly to Indiaglitz in Mumbai at the premiere of Rang De Basanti, Siddharth said, of working with Aamir in RDB, "It was a very fine experience. I've always admired his work. I've been working with a couple of very senior actors in the early stages of my career, and this too has been quite an exciting experience. And all credit to Aamir for a film like this being made. As you can see, it is a complete ensemble film, and every actor gets his due, and very few actors today are secure enough to let this happen in films in which they have a lead role."Asked what he is looking forward to next, Siddharth said, "Right now, I'm looking forward to returning to Hyderabad to shoot for my next film! And as for Rang De Basanti, I'm looking forward to the film being accepted; I'm looking forward to Rakeysh Mehra and other film makers taking up such films in future because as actors, that's as much as you can hope!"What's his next film? Siddharth says, "If you watch Telugu films, you'll see my next film releasing in May, and another's released on the 14th of Jan as well, which is doing well so far! And hey, Indiaglitz has been kind "they've always given me the best reviews!" Well, Siddharth, admitted we like you as much as your fans, but you get a good review only if you deserve one! Here's wishing him great good luck with RDB and his future films too."No funda in releasing RDB on 26th Jan, says Prasoon JoshiAd world creative genius and now a top lyricist too, Prasoon Joshi, is relieved that Rang De Basanti is finally out. "We've all been waiting for it throughout it was getting delayed, and finally it's released. It's a great feeling!"And what are his hopes for RDB? Says the ad whiz, "See, after you've done your work, a film or any creative product has its own life. It breathes on its own. You've done what you could do. The rest is up to the people who will watch it. So the film has its own life, and it will have a communication with people on its own."What's the funda of releasing it on the 26th of Jan? "It's a coincidence," says Joshi, "there's no funda in it."You've got to watch this film. All I can tell you right now is that it's a youth film, it's a film which respects the youth of this country. It will make you think, and you will definitely enjoy it!"Regards,Shah Navas

[arr] Rahman is a Genius.... - Rakesh

2006-01-27 Thread Shah Navas G

http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/5983_1609806,00430005.htm 'Rang De Basanti a contemporary film'UK BureauLondon, January 27, 2006 Noted ad filmmaker Rakeysh Mehra, whose first film Aks had Amitabh Bachchan, Manoj Bajpai and Raveena Tandon in lead roles, is ready with his next film, Rang De Basanti to be released in the UK. Excerpts from the UTV interview. How does it feel now that your eagerly awaited Rang De Basanti is finally ready to be released in the UK?(Smiles) Great! I feel like a pregnant mum who's delivered! I have a very healthy baby on hand, which I'm proud to show to the world. What about the music of Rang De Basanti?Rahman is a genius. The music has fetched extraordinary reviews and is doing well. We've all worked really hard on the music. None of the songs in the movie are "items". They're all part of the narrative. We'd scrap tunes, find new ones, create and re-create the songs until they gelled completely with the situations. And Aamir (Khan) was a part of the film's musical journeyThis is the first time that Lata Mangeshkar has sung a duet with AR Rahman in Rang De Basanti. To have Lataji singing for my film was a dream come true! She is THE Lata Mangeshkar! And to have her record a duet - Luka Chhupi Bahut Hui with Rahman for the first time was truly unbelievable. She's sung for Waheeda Rehman in the film "one legend sings for another legend!"What's the film all about?I don't want to say much except that it's a very contemporary film "a film about contemporary people and contemporary relationships. It has been shot in Delhi, Mumbai, Rajasthan and Punjab. Being a Delhi guy, this means a lot to me. The film takes off from an idea I've carried with me for nearly seven years now.How did you get Aamir Khan to play your lead role? The character is that of a simple man with a strong streak of integrity and dignity. We needed an actor who combines all these attributes and Aamir Khan was undoubtedly the first choice. Also, he gave his assent to the film immediately after listening to the script.Regards,Shah Navas

[arr] Film-makers call up Google to help find new face of Buddha

2006-01-24 Thread Shah Navas G
http://news.scotsman.com/international.cfm?id=115102006

Film-makers call up Google to help find new face of Buddha
DAVID ORR IN DELHI

A WORLDWIDE search has been launched to try to find the face of the
Buddha.

A film about the life and teachings of Siddharth Gautam, the
historical founder of Buddhism, is planned, and the makers are looking
for someone to play the leading role.

To gain maximum coverage, Buddha Films, the Hollywood company behind
the project, is hoping to enlist the help of the internet search
engine Google.

BK Modi, the Indian millionaire industrialist who is chairman of
Buddha Films, says many people around the world have expressed
interest in playing the part but that a fitting match for the Buddha
has yet to be found.

One possibility is that actors interested in the part will be invited
to post their portraits on the internet. With the help of facial
mapping techniques similar to those used by police to track down
criminals, the search engine will then find likenesses close to
computer-generated images of the Buddha. A selection of such images
has already been created by software experts in California's Silicon
Valley.

The software engineers have come up with wonderful images based on
history and other information available from various Buddhist
societies, Mr Modi said. We need a face that fits those images. The
character of the man who will play the Buddha is also important.

The computer technicians on the project are the ones who created the
fantastical creatures in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The biggest challenge lies in the fact there is no universally
accepted likeness of the Buddha and few hard facts about his life.
Even his birth date is disputed, though it is widely given as 624 BC.
He is said to have been born into a princely family in Lumbini, inside
Nepal's border with India. Siddharth Gautam forbade images of himself
during his lifetime and allowed his followers to depict him only as a
reflection in rippling water.

The first images of the Buddha in human form did not appear until the
first century AD. The most famous from this period are those executed
by sculptors of the Gandhara kingdom, in what is now eastern
Afghanistan and north-western Pakistan. The statues demonstrate a
Greco-Roman influence: the Buddha is often shown with a youthful
Apollo-like face and dressed in garments such as those seen on Roman
imperial statues.

Anyone hoping to land the role will need a serene expression and a
well-proportioned body. Other characteristics associated with the
Buddha include a long aquiline nose, shapely fingers of the same
length and elongated ears - a result of Siddharth Gautam wearing heavy
earrings as a young prince.

The film is to be directed by Shekhar Kapur, best known for his hit
film Elizabeth, set in Tudor England.

The project was initiated about 12 years ago, with Mira Nair as the
director. It had to be abandoned after protests from various Buddhist
groups, some of whom objected to the Buddha being portrayed as a human
being of flesh and blood.

During a visit to Bodh Gaya - the place in northern India where the
Buddha is held to have gained his enlightenment - Ms Nair needed
police protection from enraged devotees.

However, the latest Hollywood incarnation is said to have received the
blessing of the Dalai Lama. Shekhar Kapur last year had an audience
with the exiled Tibetan leader at his home in Dharamsala, in northern
India.

Shah Navas

[arr] Kamlesh Pandey - gung ho about RANG DE BASANTI

2006-01-24 Thread Shah Navas G
http://www.glamsham.com/movies/scoops/06/jan/24kamlesh.asp

Kamlesh Pandey - gung ho about RANG DE BASANTI
By Nitin n Sethi, Bollywood Trade News Network

Till date as a writer I had been just writing what others either
wanted or expected from me and hence hired me to write. I think I have
had enough of it. Now that I do not have to prove to any one about my
capability, I have decided to write what I want. And my latest release
as a writer- Rakyesh Mehra's RANG DE BASANTI is one subject with which
I am literally gung ho about. That is Kamlesh Pandey the veteran
writer who holds forth on his current pet obsession- RANG DE BASANTI
starring Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Siddharth, Atul Kulkarni and Kunal
Kapoor. Kamlesh who had started his career, as a writer with Pankaj
Parashar's JALWA, has indeed come a long way. Among the films that he
has written are TEZAAB, CHALBAAZ, DIL, SAUDAGAR, KHALNAYAK and BETA.

Right now, Kamlesh is excited with the course his career has taken
him. Two of his films are seeing the light of the day in January-
Sanjay Gupta's ZINDA and Rakyesh Mehra's RANG DE BASANTI. I am
excited about both the films. While I have just written the dialogues
of ZINDA, which has been inspired by a South Korean film called Old
BOY, I have written the screenplay and dialogues of RANG DE BASANTI,
which is essentially Rakyesh Mehra's baby. Kamlesh adds. Luckily
Rakyesh and I share the same emotions and concerns. RANG DE BASANTI
may have a cynical point of view but I think it is the wake up call or
today's youth, who seem to have compromised with the two monoliths-
the corporate and the family, who shape you, who actually shape your
mind and make you believe what they want you to believe. Kamlesh is
happy that Aamir Khan has loved only two subjects in the last ten
years- SARFAROSH and RANG DE BASANTI. The way Aamir has accommodated
himself so beautifully and dissolved himself in the group is to be
seen to be believed. Kamlesh adds.

The under current of the film RANG DE BASANTI, according to Kamlesh is
what would Bhagat Singh had done if only he was alive today. I wrote
RANG DE BASANTI out of a sense of anger because under the guise of
cinema, we only find crap cropping up every now and then. I had grown
up on as staple diet of Guru Dutt, Raj Kapoor as a child. I belong to
the school, which thinks that a film ought to have some substance and
set out to say something. Kamlesh adds, I have used a very odd
structure for the film, which was very difficult. I feel that it is
the director's vision, which has to take over once my script is ready
because it is the director who sets out to execute on celluloid what
the writer writes on paper. It is creditable that Rakyesh has
delivered what he had promised

Kamlesh laments the fact that though we claim to be the biggest film
industry in the world, we do not even have a film course or workshops
for screenplay writing in even a single university. Kamlesh adds. It
is pathetic that we do not have even half a dozen competent writers
though we claim to produce around 800 films in a year. India has been
unfair to writers who I feel have not been given their due credit and
status. No wonder almost 95% of the films released every year flop
miserably. Though the media is ready to write reams and reams about
any girl who is willing to take off her clothes, it does not bother to
respect writers who are treated like illegitimate children.

Kamlesh who has also written for TV serials like Mrs Madhuri Dixit
says that though he is out of television more or less because he is
not able to relate to the vision people have of television, says that
he couldn't say no when Ekta Kapoor approached him with the offer to
be on her panel of writers and supervise her serial Kahani Ghar Ghar
Ki with his story inputs. Says Kamlesh, I have known Ekta right from
the time I had commissioned her TV serial Hum Paanch for Zee TV almost
a decade ago.

Kamlesh Pandey is not ready to just sit on his laurels now that both
ZINDA and RANG DE BASANTI have reached the winning post. He has
started working on two projects for Rakyesh Mehra for whom,
incidentally he had also written AKS with which Rakyesh has made his
debut as a director. One of the two films will be DELHI 6, which will
be a light hearted film about real people in flesh and blood who
inhabit Chandni Chowk in Delhi while the other one will be a musical
called BHAIRAVI for which A R Rahman has promised to compose music
provided Rakyesh is ready to wait for two years.

Kamlesh PandeyKamlesh Pandey has added one more feather to his already
crowded cap by writing a stage musical called Bharathi for Pashagoshi
Productions from Israel, who have earlier produced several stage
musicals like The Fiddler On The Roof, Phantom of The Opera etc. I
was given a brief to write a stage musical on India with 14 popular
Bollywood songs and weave a story on India. It is a live show with
Bhavana Pani, daughter of writer-director Uday Shankar Pani in the

[arr] Rahman for Bolly Musical London Dreams

2006-01-23 Thread Shah Navas G

http://inhome.rediff.com/movies/2006/jan/23london.htm London Dreams: Like Moulin Rouge?Subhash K Jha | January 23, 200615:42 IST Ajay Devgan has almost become Raj Kumar Santoshi's resident hero. After the versatile filmmaker completes his political drama Saamna with Ajay in the lead, he goes on to the grand musical London Dreams in the middle of next year. The latter is unlike any film Santoshi has ever made. Moving away from the gut-wrenching action of his trademark films (Ghayal, Lajja), London Dreams moves to London to delineate the life and times and music of Asian underground music. It is the story of the rise and fall of an Indi-rock band, and A R Rahman has already been roped in to create the global sounds of this unorthodox Bollywood musical. The real surprise in the project will be the return of Salman Khan to Santoshi's cinema. Some years ago, the two had teamed up for the uproarious comedy Andaz Apna Apna. Now, Salman, who is currently on a signing spree (he has lately said yes to Nikhil Advani and Samir Karnik, among others) will return to Santoshi with the director's favourite leading man Ajay Devgan as part of the cast.London Dreams could possibly be Santoshi's most expensive film to date. It will try and replicate -- in terms of the Indo-British musical experience -- the flamboyance of Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge.Says the director, "I wouldn't like to say much about it at the moment, but yes, Ajay Devgan and Salman Khan have been signed. And Rahman will do the music."Regards,Shah Navas

Citibank's collaboration with 'Rang De Basanti'
By Our Correspondent ©2006 Bollyvista.com

Rang De Basanti
Close on the heels of the major Coca Cola tie-up with UTV's Rang De
Basanti, Citibank has collaborated with the mega Aamir Khan-starrer as
well in the US. NRIs, who open a Citibank Rupee Checking Account
before January 31, 2006 with USD 1000, get a complete waiver on the
minimum balance for the next 20 years and also an exclusive
double-disc DVD pack of Rang De Basanti.

Citibank US previously tied up with UTV on the latter's Shah Rukh
Khan-starrer Swades. It seems an exclusive showing of the film is also
likely to be organized for select Citibank patrons in the US.

[arr] Past and present merge in 'Rang De Basanti'

2006-01-20 Thread Shah Navas G

http://www.nowrunning.com/news/news.asp?it=5560 Past and present merge in 'Rang De BasantiIANS [Thursday, January 19, 2006] New Delhi, Jan 20 (IANS) After the moustachioed period look in "Mangal Pandey", Aamir Khan is back as an urban youth in "Rang De Basanti" where India under British rule in the 1930s merges seamlessly with today's India.Slated for a Republic Day release, the film is about the dreams and desires of a London- based filmmaker chancing upon the diaries of her grandfather, who served in the British police force in India during the freedom struggle. Excited, she plans a film on the Indian revolutionaries mentioned in the diaries. She flies down to Delhi and casts a group of five young boys to play the pivotal roles of these revolutionaries. The five youngsters initially refuse to be part of the project because they don't identify with the characters from the past. They would rather party than be patriots. In the film, the 1930s British India and the India of today run parallel and intersect with each other at crucial points. As the film reaches its resolution, the line between past and present blurs, and they become one in spirit. A.R Rahman's music, which is selling like hot cakes, adds fervour to the drama.Director Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra, whose directorial debut "Aks" starring Amitabh Bachchan and Manoj Bajpai bombed miserably, has pinned all his hopes on "Rang De Basanti".Siddharth, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kunal, Soha Ali Khan, Alice Patten, Waheeda Rehman, Atul Kulkarni and Om Puri will be seen in pivotal roles in the film. The star undoubtedly is Aamir, sporting another new look - curly hair and trendy clothes, somewhat similar to his gelled, goatee appearance in his last 'urban' film "Dil Chahta Hai"."Rang De Basanti" was set to release last week, but found itself in troubled waters when the Indian Air Force (IAF) objected to a computer-generated shot showing a MiG 21 crashing. It took a special screening for Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee and the three service chiefs to finally clear the film. While the IAF cleared it without a fuss, the Animal Welfare Board also objected and didn't budge till the producer edited out 20 seconds of the film showing Aamir riding a horse.Regards,Shah Navas

[arr] Rahman and Benegal have started working for....

2006-01-17 Thread Shah Navas G
http://newsfromrussia.com/world/2006/01/17/71263.html

Reputable film director Shyam Benegal says Indian films ignore rural
realities

13:45 2006-01-17
Film directors from India tend to concentrate on urban themes and
ignore the stories of the country's rural majority, said Shyam
Benegal, one of India's best known Hindi film directors.
Today's films are completely city or urban oriented, because the
aspirations of the Indian masses lie in the cities, Benegal
reportedly told Press Trust of India. Even the rural Indian audience
would not want to watch a film set in a rural backdrop, he was quoted
as saying by PTI.

In a career spanning three decades, Benegal has made 24 movies and
more than 45 documentaries. He's considered one of the pioneers of the
so-called new Indian cinema movement, which bloomed in the 1970s and
early 1980s by focusing on realistic themes in movies.

His quartet of early films, starting with Ankur or The Seedling,
introduced a stable of powerful actors, including Shabana Azmi,
Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri.

Even though India's metropolises dominate Hollywood movies, the
cities which are shown in mainstream Indian films are not the real
Indian cities, Benegal was quoted by PTI as saying.

Rather than showing the grim realities of the urban _ and rural _
poor, Bollywood tends to focus on affluent urbanites, the 71-year-film
director reportedly lamented.

Documentaries are still dealing with reality. They are taking up
issues which confront society, he was quoted as saying. But
unfortunately, there are very few takers for such films.

Benegal said he had begun work on his next Hindi film, a musical with
songs composed by A. R. Rahman, one of India's top music directors.

We are doing the music now. Shooting for the film has not started
yet, he reported, informs the AP

[arr] JOK - newsbit

2006-01-16 Thread Shah Navas G

http://newstodaynet.com/talkies/1501tt1.htm Back in his familiar territory is Surya Going by a recent survey, actor Surya's saleability as an artiste upped a few notches after Ghajini. Much depended on the film's success for Surya, shot in a whopping budget. The making took a longer time and it was speculation time for the media to hazard a guess on the success. Ultimately, it boiled down to the audience verdict which put up the thumbs up sign. Going by the exacting standards he set in Ghajini, the pressure told on Surya in Aaru. Though he put in his best efforts, commercially it could not create the magic of Ghajini. Now, back in his familiar territory is Surya in Jillendru Oru Kathal with Jyothika and Bhumika as his love interest. With A R Rahman as music composer, the love sublime has the added sheen. Presently rated on a par with Vijay and Vikram, Surya's home production - his cousin Gnanavel is the producer - has evinced interest and curiosity in the industry. The chemistry between Surya and Jyothika was the high point in Kaakha Kaakha. That the two joining hands again should augur well for the film's success. Bhumika has filled in the shoes of Asin, who turned down the project, unsure of the footage as the second heroine. After the way Surya and Asin hit it off in Ghajini, the industry had touted them as the hottest pair on screen. It would have been a test of their abilities to have recreated the magic again. But it was not to be and Asin's miss has turned out to be profitable for Bhumika. The Roja Kootam girl pounced on the offering and did not mind one bit to play second fiddle to Jyothika. Jillendru Oru Kadhal is to be directed by Krishna, an associate of Goutham Menon in Minnale and Gharshana. The latter was the remake of Kaakha Kaakha. - NT BureauRegards,Shah Navas

[arr] Maneka Gandhi fumes at 'Rang De Basanti'

2006-01-13 Thread Shah Navas G

http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/hindi/article/19721.html Maneka Gandhi fumes at 'Rang De Basanti' IANS [Friday, January 13, 2006] A day after the Indian Air Force said it had no objections to Bollywood star Aamir Khan's upcoming film "Rang De Basanti" and its depiction of fighter jet crashes, the movie was embroiled in a fresh controversy over its use of animals.Animal rights activists and Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) member Maneka Gandhi Thursday alleged the film's producer had used animals without getting the mandatory permission of the board."According to law, no filmmaker can use animals in their films without the permission of the AWBI. But neither the filmmakers nor the censor board bothered to get this clearance," said Gandhi, a member of Lok Sabha."Two months back they were sent a notice regarding the issue but they didn't take our permission and got a go-ahead from the censor board," Gandhi told IANS."It's only on Dec 25 that they applied for permission, which is really too late to seek permission.""Rang De Basanti", which features horses in some of its sequences, is slated for release Jan 20. The film, directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and featuring Aamir Khan and Soha Ali Khan in the lead roles, was in the middle of a controversy earlier this week over its depiction of crashes of air force jets. A special viewing was then organised for the top brass of the armed forces and Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee.AWBI was set up in 1962 under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act of 1960 and acts as a nodal body for animal welfare. Gandhi said the law was simple - one needs to take clearance from the board to get a censor certificate. When a filmmaker wants to use animals, he needs to apply to the AWBI stating the type of animals. An AWBI inspector then carries out an inspection before giving clearance, she explained.Gandhi said the AWBI was contemplating to take censor board chief Sharmila Tagore and the makers of "Rang De Basnati" to court. She also said she had talked to the information and broadcasting ministry about the issue. "When I talked to the ministry, they told me that it was a slip and they would take a look at it."Regards,Shah Navas

[arr] What's wrong with Rang De Basanti

What's wrong with Rang De Basanti

By IndiaFM
Friday, 13 January , 2006, 13:41

Rang De Basanti has been making headlines since the past few days due
to objections raised over the subject matter. An overview of what
exactly is offensive in the film:

1.The movie revolves around a bunch of friends. One of them loses his
life in a MIG crash. At the end of the film, there is a dedication to
dead MIG pilots. The IAF wants this dedication to all pilots who
have laid down lives, since the former dedication is demoralizing for
the youth. The producers have already agreed to delete the dedication.

2.In the film, the Defence Minister attributed the death of the pilot
to human error. Army officials want this character to be referred as
minister and not Defence Minister.

3.IAF officials want a chart to be displayed at the end of the movie,
which states that there is a 50% drop in crashes.

4.They do not want the events to be dated to 2002 as it refers to the
tenure of George Fernandes.

[arr] Rang De Basanti release could be stalled

2006-01-13 Thread Shah Navas G

Rang De Basanti release could be stalled
New Delhi | January 13, 2006 6:36:22 PM IST

The release of Aamir Khan Soha Ali Khan-starrer 'Rang De Basanti'
seems to be in trouble with animal welfare activist Maneka Gandhi
today asserting that the film could not be released as producers had
not sought the mandatory permission from the Animal Welfare Board of
India to shoot animals.

Censor Board chairman Sharmila Tagore told a TV channel that she had
not yet recieved a No Objection certificate from the Animal Welfare
Board of India, without which the film could not recieve the necessary
certification, the theatrical release of the film could be delayed
from the orginal date of January 20.

Reiterating her charges against the producers of 'Rang De Basanti', Ms
Gandhi said, ''The movie was shot without the mandatory permission
from the Animal Welfare Board and the board sent notice to the
producers, they have not yet replied. It is a statutory obligation and
I do not see any reason why the movie should be released without
clearing the matter.'' ''I have not yet recieved the NOC from the AWBI
without which the Censor Board cannot issue a certification to a film,
which is necessary for it to release in the theatres,''Ms Tagore told
the channel.

Hope everything goes fine...

[arr] First look: Jillendru Oru Kadhal

2006-01-10 Thread Shah Navas G
http://us.rediff.com/movies/2006/jan/09look1.htm?q=mpfile=.htm

After Pudupettai and Paramasivan, the film to watch out for is the
Surya-Jyothika-Bhumika Chawla starrer, Jillendru Oru Kathal.

Following the success of Ghajini, Surya is the most happening actor in
Tamil, on par with Vijay and Vikram. Naturally, this home production
by his cousin Gjanavel has generated a lot of interest and curiosity
in the industry. Add to this the fact that he is paired with
much-talked-about real love Jyothika, who recently told a Telugu
magazine that they were to marry soon.

Another reason the film has received a lot of publicity is because
Asin, who was supposed to be the second heroine, walked out of the
project. Asin and Surya became the hottest on-screen pair after the
unprecedented success of Ghajini. Audiences loved the magic they
created on screen. Asin turned down the project saying she was not
sure how much mileage she would get as 'second' heroine, but Bhumika
Chawla accepted her role.

Jillendru Oru Kadhal will be directed by Krishna who was an associate
of Gowtham Menon in Minnale and Gharshana, the Telugu remake of Kaakha
Kaakha. Another interesting feature is its music, composed by none
other than A R Rahman.

Shah Navas
