, voiceless BGMs. The reason for the list being small is because I dont have original ayngarans of many films. I only want to rip BGMs from DVD9 since the audio is compressed in DVD5 (therefore not lossless). I suggest if people are going to be doing these lossless BGMs, then they do it with DVD9 (dts if available or obviously dd). We want to have the BEST!!! What sorrow could lie in the heart of this man, who, to me, embodies all that is beautiful, happy, and heavenly? Is it this sorrow that I lack? Years passed as an uninterrupted supply of beautiful music and incredible artistry from the maestro continued to subconsciously alter my spiritual state of being for the better while I contently lived with my latent artist trying to figure out what this sorrow is and how and where is it that he is going to find it. Then, in early 2004, I bought an album I had anxiously awaited for quite some time; it brought together India's foremost painter – M.F. Hussein – in his second directorial venture with India's foremost composer – A.R. Rahman! I knew I was going to get magic from this album well before its release! The music was true to expectations, very colorfully crafted, and quite deftly and intricately woven with ARR himself attempting to reach the abstract heights of an M.F. Hussein painting in the two instrumental pieces; however, one song stood out every time I listened to the entire album. It was something very special and the sounds and emotions spoke to my heart directly; yes, this song was divine! Do Kadam gave me so many goose-bumps each time I listened to it that I started to skip all the other songs (except, perhaps, for Rang Hain) and play only that over and over again; that is a high compliment given the quality of the entire album! I did not understand the Hindi lyrics (by Rahat Indori) fully at first except for a phrase here and there, though it was enough, I thought, to put together a rough sketch of what the song was about. I was wrong! This song could not be enjoyed in its fullest being by putting together its pieces in a haphazard manner like I did. In fact, to this day, I find some deeper meaning to the creativity in this song. As with any divinely inspired song, the first few notes and sounds captured my attention: it was synthetic, it was mystical, and it was vintage ARR! Dark was the night and anticipation chilled the air, The jam packed amphi wanted all the truths laid out bare, This was the night to be, A star- in the making, the Infy crowd wanted to see, A false start later, he was there, Whilst guys 'n gals alike continued to stare. Ladies and Gentlemen please welcome – Siddarth, the director turned actor, who has captured many a heart and apparently (going by the screaming welcome at HYD DC) lots of them in Infosys too. After a false call (probably Siddarth wanted his message to linger with us over the weekend), Siddarth finally appeared on stage amidst a renewed cheering (screaming included!) and tremendous applause. Beginning his speech with a powerful (modified) dialogue from his latest movie "Rang De Basanti" (I'm Karan Singhania… me and my friends made this film (in Hindi)) Siddarth talked about the movie and dedicated it to the fighter pilots of the Indian Air Force, killed due to failure of aircraft (Mostly MiGs) during regular sorties. Sending out a strong message to the audience Siddarth was the cynosure of all ears (eyes too, of course J ), as he delivered the rationale behind the film. An alumni from SP Jain management institute and winner of the CNBC manager of the year award while pursuing his studies there, Siddarth had the audience hanging on to his every word as he spoke about the making of Rang de Basanti. Preferring to take his questions (a select few from the thousand odd received) standing up, Siddarth was spot on with his answers from the word go. He was all praise for the director, Rakesh Mehra and a host of others with whom he had worked, including the likes of Aamir Khan, Mani Ratnam and so on. A few excerpts: How did Rang de Basanti (RDB) happen? Siddarth: Films like RDB don't get made, they just HAPPEN. Initially I refused Karan Singhania's part, but on reading the script was okay with it. Finally though, I was really glad I had taken it up. How did it feel to work with the crew of RDB? Siddarth: RDB unit was a very close knit one. With Aamir Khan, and Rakesh Mehra, around, one may feel diminutive or timid, but we all pitched in with our suggestions and ideas to improve it. Are you going back to directing after this or will you continue as an actor? Siddarth: Actually the directing bug was already in me while at S P Jain. Mr. Mani Ratnam signed me as his assistant for the Tamil movie Kannathil Muthamittal and some time later Director Shankar spotted the actor in me and signed me up for Boys. Then came Mani Ratnam's Ayutha Ezhuthu (Yuva in Hindi), where once again he played an actor in the Tamil version. Post Ayutha Ezhuthu was Nuvvostanante Nenodanta in Telugu (my smash Hit). I'm still focused on direction, though it may take a while to happen. Siddarth said that the passion for directing films still existed in him and recently he had penned Chukallo Chandrudu in Telugu. He said he aspires to make it big as a director some day. How was it to work with Mani Ratnam? Siddarth: "Go get what you want", was the lesson I learnt from him. There's absolutely no spoon feeding involved. As Mani Ratnam said "Do everything with your heart." Stand for what you believe in and make your own way towards it. If not an actor, would you be a software engineer? Siddarth (a little amused, recalls an incident in the near past): Recently I had been to IIT (the movie was screened there too!) and while leaving I told my Mom "Finally after 27 years I get to step into the IITs"! Marketing and management are a yes but the technical side is a sure NO. What kind of a person are you? Siddarth (Praising Rakeysh Mehra): I'm by nature a very arrogant type. And my one motto is to remain hell bent or directing or go down trying. I don't want to be an apathetic kind of person. Yes I agree that Yuvan has been doing some good music recently. His background score for Kandanaalmudhal was extremely good. Lots of inspirations from ARR. He has used a lot of flute. He has got his unique style that works. But I feel sometimes he uses too much of rythm in his songs. A good example being the song 'Kanda Naal Mudalai' from Kandanaalmudhal. He has tried usingvery fast beats to a Carnatic classic. Somehow the beat doesn't seem to gel with the song. But the SAX interludes are good. I don't agree with you. ARR has kept on experimenting. That is the reason he has been giving new sounds and they are infact good. If ARR stagnates then he will be just like any other MD. Hi, It is a known fact that ARRhas been belting out some great music but the number of films he has done has come down for obvious reasons. The songs have been hits but just because the movies have flopped, it doesn't mean ARR hasn't given a HIT. The songs have not got due recognition beacuse there are a lot of private channels in TN that promote even the worst of the movies for some reasons unknown to many and some personal rivalry not towards Rahman but somebody else in the movie. Anyway it seems Rahman has a lot ofmovies queuing up to get released next year and he pushes out the Dappankuthu songsof the popular numbers and provide people with real quality music. Sudarsan. Hi Vishwakanth, This is Sudarsan From Wipro Blore. According to me the answers to the three questions are: 1) Every person's music is unique and ARR's is that much more unique because of the way his songs are mixed and the sounds that he uses. He has been experimenting with different instruments the best example being the usage of different kinds of flutes by Navin and also a lot of fresh voices that mesmerise you out of nowhere. The percussions are also a fine example. One of the major uniqueness that I see in his music is the freedom given to singers. They make the song that much more better and he accordingly modifies the chords. Even the singer doesn't know how the final song will be like until the track is out. 2) ARR's music always has a little western touch along with Indian music. Again the mixing plays an important part. Moreover Rahman has been a performer on stage all aroud the world making him more known to global audience and producers. This gave him a platform for his international projects. But ofcourse nobody gives oppurtunities without quality. 3) Regarding this question I can't give u xact nos. Sorry for my incomplete answer. Hi Chandra, Ya you are right. Most of Rahman's Songs have some complexity within them basically in the rythm. Being a member o fmy college's orchecstra, we have found it quiet difficult to repeat Rahman's songs. One more song with complex beats that makes the song look as if it is out of beat is Sabaq Aisa from Tehzeeb. It requires very great amount of precision from the singer. You can hear various channels of rythm in Rahman's songs and the mixing has a unique style that makes songs standout. May be somebody else who has more knowledge on music can help you.
