[arr] sharing my little SdM/ARR experience in Italy

2009-03-17 Thread Jahanzeb Farooq
last days i was visiting Rome (Italy). there were some small experiences of
SDM/ARR i want to share.

once while walking on the famous Via del Corso street i suddenly heard someone
singing ringa ringa. as i looked there were two Italian guys (both probably in
their 40s) passing by, one singing ring ring ringa, ring ring ringa to the
other. i was so amazed and tried to hear more however could not get what they
talked after that (in Italian language). and after that they started discussing
Latika (Freida Pinto) :-) probably they were just coming out of the cinema as
it was located on the same street a little ahead. perhaps one of them was
describing the other how he liked the songs etc. i was so amazed that how
general western audience liked the music. i also realized how catchy ringa
ringa is for westerners compared to other songs of SDM. may be if i had heard
them a little ago i found them talking about Jai ho and others as well.

later benefiting from my visit i took some time to experience watching SDM
there (in cinema). although I had already seen it twice (thanks to piracy) but
not on big screen as it was not released here in Denmark until recently. SDM
was released in Italy on 5 December under the title The Millionaire. i
watched it in a fully packed theater. and do i need to add that not a single
person left the hall until Jai ho was completely ended? i think no.
watching the experience was overwhelming and i must say altogether new compared
to watching it on small screen. the BGM was so exotic and thumping which added
immense energy to scenes. talking about the songs besides O saya especially the
way Mausam escape was used was truly awesome. i really loved to see that they
used the best of the lot (Mausam escape) twice. it is so energetic and
thumping especially in the second scene where first it runs lightly in
background as Jamal sees Latika on platform and then suddenly starts loudly as
Saleem and his guys run to get Latika. i also noticed that when Mausam escape
is played in the first scene (kids escaping) the sitar is played in the
background, i mean it is not very prominent as if it was dimmed but in the
second scene it is loud and very clear. the second best piece i liked was when
Liquid dance is played, loud and right in your face, un-ignorable. also i
noticed that there is a difference between versions of Riots on CD and in the
movie. in the later there is some additional instrument, like piano, playing
throughout, which is missing in CD version.

also on my way to Rome (in Munich) i noticed an article on SDM's Oscars in a
German newspaper (called Bild) which i found interesting somehow. here is a
scan of it:

http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/7792/arrpaper.jpg

the article circles ARR's in photo. it mentions him with full name Allah Rakha
Rahman all the way. here is the translation i managed to come up with:

Composer Alla Rakha Rahman (43) is the son of an Indian left politician.

wow... did we know that? lol. or perhaps it is translation error.

Composer Allah Rakha Rahman (best film music) should become a doctor, however
failed (or dropped) in exam.

wow.. did we know that? at least not me.

The title song Jai ho (Best song) was written for the film Yuvraaj
(Remake of Rain Man) nevertheless its director did not want it.

quite right that Ghai did not want it however it is a surprise to me that
Yuvraaj was a remake of Rain Main.
