[Assp-user] YIKES!

2010-05-14 Thread Dickson, Paul
Is there anyway to force ASSP to save the current files in memory such as
bombre.txt, blackre.txt, etc etc? I accidentally did a “rm –rf ./*” instead of
a “rm –rf ./test*”

☹

I have a backup from Sunday, but I’ve done a lot on the box in those files
since.. I’d rather not lose the changes.

Subject: [Assp-user] Mail sender address not whitelisted maill forwarded to
whitelist from outlook, but is from Entourage, both through exchange 2003

I noticed a user submitting an email to whitelist with a from address that I
had seen submitted several times recently. I checked to see if when he
submitted it, it reported the sender address being added to the whitelist.
It did not. I forwarded a CC of his whitelist submission to whitelist and
got back a report that it had been added to the whitelist. The log
 reflected the same.

I then unwhitelisted the address, went into the users mailbox and copied the
newsletter to my mailbox. I use entourage as an email client. I forwarded
the original to whitelist using Entourage and it was again whitelisted. I
unwhitelisted it, opened my mailbox under outlook 2007 instead, forwarded
the same email to whitelist, and the address was NOT whitelisted. The email
interface report showed no signs of whitelisting either. The email
whitelist report from the outlook forward doesn¹t show any report of
anything already being whitelisted, or being added, or the like. The report
from the Entourage shows a report as you would expect.

All forwards to whitelist were in-line/not attached.

We use 99% outlook 2007 as the email client in our organization which goes
through a fully patched exchange 2003 server. Has anyone else seen anything
 like this?

Is anyone else running a similar config that would mind if I sent them the
problematic email as an attachment and had them try whitelisting through the
email interface to see what they get?

UPTIME = how long a particular service has been UP and RUNNING since the

last time it was STARTED.

If you are running 1.3.9 version of ASSP, it is impossible to have an

Otherwise... I have a computer whose ASSP-UPTIME is over 20 years...

NDRs are (or rather, *should* be) the responsibility of the originating
server, and are only delivered to the sender if the message was
REJECTed.

If an NDR is not being received, then either ASSP is ACCEPTing the
message, or the problem is elsewhere... maybe gmail doesn't deliver
NDRs?

Ok, so maybe there's something that ASSP is doing differently that gmail

and hotmail don't like...

Have you tried going back to 1.3.3.8 to see if the NDRs are again
received? That would at least confirm that it is really something that
ASSP 1.3.5+ is doing differently that is causing it.

Or maybe they're (gmail/hotmail) trying something new, and it is just
coincidence that it happened when you moved to 1.3.5...

First of all, let me say that the ASSP stats port
is really cool, since it allows me to fetch stats from
the running filters and massage them as I like

Then, to come to the real argument for this email;
here's a whish; could it be possible to add some
separate stats for the DNSBL/URIBL ?

I mean, having a separate number of hits for each
DNSBL/URIBL to see which one is doing better and
possibly to decide if a given rbl is worth using ?

Currently I'm using something like this

grep -i -h -E '\[DNSBL\]' $1|grep -i -E 'DNSblacklisted
in'|cut -f2 -d'('|cut -f3 -d' '|cut -f1 -d')'|sort|uniq -c|sort /r

which outputs something like

   47459 zen.spamhaus.org
   11388 dul.dnsbl.sorbs.net
9213 karmasphere.email-sender.dnsbl.karmasphere.com
3102 list.dsbl.org
 891 bl.spamcop.net
 432 blackholes.five-ten-sg.com
 215 ix.dnsbl.manitu.net
  38 combined.njabl.org
  16 bhnc.njabl.org

to extract the infos from a single logfile (not a clean and
good way, but it seems to be working); but having those
infos directly built into the stats would imVHo be really
cool and useful (and probably more accurate than the
above stuff)

Witch features I need to enable in assp to have a basic (medium)

I have many clients (with mailing lists and commercial mail) and they
are very lazy to update his whitelists.

We can accept a certain level of spam as normally.

[Assp-user] Feature suggestion.

2007-12-11 Thread Dickson, Paul

A threshold of X number of messages passed from a sender in test mode
that would send a configurable message to the sender saying you sent us
X number of messages thought to be spam. You may want to see if you
have a virus that is sending these.

Maybe an option to then remove that person from the whitelist. Also, an
option to attach the messages in question to the mail so they can be
reviewed as needed. That would be helpful for them, so when they see
they sent a message Enlarge your member!, they know there is something
wrong on their system.

Just a thought.

sf.net requires you to have a valid Postmaster@ address in order to send

mail to the list and actually checks by attempting to send mail to the
address(it stops after the TO response).

Check your ASSP logs and see if it's doing something to prevent that
from working right.

Very odd that only one whitelist entry would cause that. Had you tried
adding the whitelist entry by hand via the admin panel or is this when
it is causing the abend?

No. I've been running 1.3.3.8 for quite some time. No other
whitelist attempts are provoking this problem. I looked through the
whitelist and didn't see any garbled text, although I obviously didn't
go through it line by line, being that it is thousands upon thousands of
lines long;)

Did this happen right after upgrading to 1.3.3.8 or ?? maybe
the whitelist is corrupt?

[Assp-user] Feature suggestion.

2007-08-27 Thread Dickson, Paul
Have the SMTP limits obey the whitelist.

Why:
Well, we have a large organization we exchange large amounts of mail
with. For whatever reason, their Symantec Mail Security Gateway POS
trips the max errors and ends up blocking their mail for the expiration
period. This ended up in an endless loop because by the time the
expiration happened, they had so much mail queued up that it tripped the
limits again. This happened while I was off Friday, so when people
discovered that mail that was sent in the early am still wasn't getting
through in the late afternoon, shit hit the fan. I have added their
server IP into the appropriate areas to avoid this, but was thinking it
would be nice to have that happen automatically if the domain or ip is
already in the associated whitelists.

Having it obey the ipwl is obviously strait forward. I was thinking to
make things even better, it could check to see if the ip matches the
domain name listed in the whitedomains file, and if so, add that IP to
the list of a smtpwhiteip's file. That would probably have to tie into
the sender validation section because of the required lookup, but would
be worth it IMO.

Thoughts?

Re: [Assp-user] Feature suggestion.

2007-08-27 Thread Dickson, Paul
I'm not sure exactly which was tripped. I know their max sessions per
IP is set to 20, which ours is as well, which leaves it to either:

Maximum SMTP Connections Per IP Address Frequency =20
Or
Maximum Errors Per Session

I'm guessing the prior due to the large amount of mail we get from them.
I went ahead and set the prior to 0 for the time being.

A better definition of what is stored in /spam or different folders
based on the reason would be nice.

 ???

In example:
/spam/dnsbl (for RBL-Failed Messages)
/spam/Collect (for Trapped Messages)
/spam/Bomb (for RegEx-ed Messages)
/spam/helo (for HeloBL and Invalid Helo)
Etc.

report trapped (collected) Spam wich is not DNSBL-failed, but
 blocked/stored by other reasons.

 ???

So I would Report to SpamCop the messages from
/spam/collect
/spam/bomb

but not
/spam/dnsbl

And could concentrate seeking for false positives in spam/helo and
spam/bomb, cuz these tests caused the most false positives (crappy
sending servers or stupid Mails btw. - not ASSP-Failures)

In the meantime, I'm giving it a spin.

Re: [Assp-user] archiving mail with ASSP

I agree with the current responses, however, can you not just use CC All

Has anyone devised an elegant way to use ASSP on a Windows server to
meet
the U.S. records retention requirements? I need to archive the not-spam

mail for at least one domain name for legal purposes. I'm wondering if
hMailServer can facilitate this?

If we weren't trying to stabilize the released ASSP code right now, I'd
ask
Fritz to build this into an ASSP beta. It could be an extension of the
ccHam functions to store the mail to a directory.

Any ideas?

Hello

I think that everyone here should put on the email subject the OS used,
so we can avoid confusion.
After about 20 hours using 1.3.3.2 I can report this on linux.
On linux , 1.3.3.2 works between 4%-10% cpu also with big files ; cpu
usage is really stable for hours . Clamd usage to check 10 or 20

bytes (ClamAV Bytes)
is really insignificant , the usage required by clamd is always under 1%

, a fraction of cpu .. So as I can read from this mailing list the
situation on Windows os is really different (!) .
I noticed on linux an additional ~10%-15% cpu usage using a large bombre

file . Using a smaller bombre file there is a sensible decrease of cpu
usage .What does happen on Windows ?
On linux I can't see a difference (talking about assp cpu usage) using
all in scoring mode (Forged helo is always set to 1 as Fritz always
suggested)
or not using scoring mode .

This is the situation I have seen on linux servers using 1.3.3.2 .

Keep track of all submissions to the email interfaces for falsely
tagged/nottagged mail.. compare that to the total # of messages
processed to get an accuracy percentage.

I did it manually for the last 8 days. 99.95% accuracy! JJ

[Assp-user] where is it?

2007-08-06 Thread Dickson, Paul
At one point there was a feature that allowed a delay in seconds before
a helo could be sent to your smtp. I am experiencing a huge backup in
the SMTP queue on my exchange server. When I telnet to the assp box, it
get about a 3-4 second delay before sendmail announces its' self, so I
have to imagine that setting is enabled, but I cannot find it anywhere.

What is weird is I haven't changed anything and this started happening
recently. Usually mail zips right through assp/sendmail and out. Now
it just hangs around in the queue on the exchange server for 10~15 min.

[Assp-user] new log feature request?

2007-07-24 Thread Dickson, Paul
Is it possible that logging could be done to show when someone has been
removed from a whitelist? I continue to get occasional reports of
previously whitelisted addresses getting tagged as spam, and have
confirmed the whitelisting, then further tagging a couple months later.
My whitelist exp is set to 390 days. It would be nice to see when
something was yanked from the whitelist so I can get some sort of
indication as to why.

Re: [Assp-user] Why is ASSP blocking windows (dash) 1250 ?

2007-07-16 Thread Dickson, Paul
I agree it is a bit over zealous, but to each their own. I personally
removed all the windows- character sets from being blocked because I
was getting too many false positives. I recommend checking all
pre-packaged Re files before using them.

Subject: [Assp-user] Why is ASSP blocking windows (dash) 1250 ?

I recently upgraded ASSP and I thought all went well ... until I got a
notification today that one of my mailing list providers has dropped me
due to my mail being rejected 8 times.

Turns out ASSP has been blocking 'windows-1250' in the headers !!

Eikes ! Thankfully this is easy enough to fix, I found the BombHeaderRe
and sure enough the 'offending' character set was there.

But my question is ... why would this be a default ? What's so
spam-worthy of the windows Latin character set that it was deemed a
reasonable default to block all messages with it ?

Thanks !

Try to run the clamd commandline scanner clamDscan to test clamd. If
clamd is running, you will find it in the taskmanager as clamd

 If clamd is not running:
Try to start clamd from commandline (open cmd, go to the
clamav-devel/bin folder (or wherever your clamd files are) and just
enter clamd - if it fails, you may see a error message.

I have forward as attachment set inside TB.

My misunderstanding was that I used to collect the false positives and

I will maul about with the filters and see what I can do

You might be able to do it with a Message Filter, my false

The best i worked out was to change the forwarding prefs to

 4 clicks for me(+1 Forward button,+2 To address,+1 Send

Also, based on your message you don't seem to be forwarding
the messages as attachments which you really should be doing.

Update whatever you have to, if you have to. The DNS change took effect
~ 12 hours ago. If you can, clear your DNS cache and (local and on your
DNS server) to use the live site, or just wait out the TTL.

You can tell you are on the new site if you see a green button at the
bottom of any page.

[Assp-user] Feature suggestion.

2007-06-15 Thread Dickson, Paul
Obviously the autowhitelisting to recipients is wonderful. What if
there were an option to have any sent mail, with the subject tag that
you use to specify, thought to be spam was added to the notspam corpus?
It might save users the trouble of having to send to whitelist. Might
be overly complicated as well. Thoughts?

Another idea. Newsletters are always a problem when they fail a check
not in test mode because no one is on the other end to request to be
whitelisted, and the end user has not idea what the address is. I think
an option to send the recipient notice of the bounce as well, giving the
option for them to forward that to whitelist, would be very useful.
Maybe an optional associated regex to cut down on the number of
notifications for mail that are likely still spam. Such as all mail
with \snewsletter\s would have a custom ndr sent to the recipient, and
anything not matching a regex would not. Thoughts?

Re: [Assp-user] Feature suggestion.

2007-06-15 Thread Dickson, Paul
If they sign up for the newsletter via email, the greedy whitelist
should pick up all the addresses you need. Additionally, most mailing
lists would be aware of the spam problem and would let you know which
address you ought to whitelist.
I have yet to see a newsletter send mail with the same address that you
would use to subscribe, not to mention 99% of subscriptions happen by
the used clicking 'yes I want to receive further news' in a web form.
If a newsletter is being bounced, how is it going to let anyone know
anything? A computer isn't going to understand the instructions in the
NDR.

2) That would be your duty as the admin, or the user's duty, to check
their spamfolder for these things. Check sendAllSpam in CC Mail for how
you can have spam sent to different accounts, or even the user's account

(using subadressing) for client/server side filtering.
NO idea what you are trying to say here, or how it would be at all
applicable to anything I mentioned.

1) I believe what you're talking about is the WhiteRe, which will cause

ASSP to consider a message whitelisted. It's in the Whitelisting section

of the UI, but it has one caveat: WhiteRe is checked after all sender
related checks, so the message might fail on PTR, RBL, etc before it
gets to WhiteRe.
No, I know what the whitere is, and the feature I am suggesting should
have a completely separate regex.

I currently have assp set to tag mail in the subject with the
blocking reason for CC all spam. Is there any way to do that as well
for any mail check in test mode? It would be useful so I can easily
see the reason for false positives when reported.

Did you look into section testmode ?
I doubt it.

We had a problem with assp crashing every few hours. I noticed after a
couple days of trying to figure it out that the server time had walked

Re: [Assp-user] 1.3.2 (55) unstable

2007-05-22 Thread Dickson, Paul
FWIW, I'm running 1.3.1() and have seen it crash repeatedly with the
same behavior as stated in the first post. This has been happening
since early am on Monday.

I have seen this in the past where a particular host connecting will do
that, but this time the last few connections in the log are never the
same. I assumed it was something on my lin box again. After reading
this, maybe not.

I'm going to turn logging on for everything I can and see if there is a
commonality. Anyone having the same issue may want to do the same so we
can compare results.

Ideally, you should let your users report spam and not spam. One of the
greatest things about assp is it lets you delegate that task to the
users,
who really are the ultimate authority in regards to what is spam and
what is
not.

That being said, there is a recent post about an Outlook toolbar for
assp.
It's really a nice toolbar and if one was to manage spam reporting, I
think
it is the best way. A quick search in nabble forums for assp Outlook
will
quickly find the post, I'm sure.

Subject: [Assp-user] Crawling URL's in messages and then doing
Bayesiananalysis

I read a white paper several weeks ago in which someone (I don't
remember
who) was discussing anti-spam ideas. One of the ideas he proposed was
for a
spam filter to identify the URL's in a message and then crawl the page
and
perform Bayesian analysis on the page content. The score is passed to
the
email for handling. The paper mentioned another interesting idea about
this...if a spammer was to send out tens of thousands of messages, and
everyone was hitting the spamertised web server to analyze the content,
it
may act as a DoS against that web server, sort of causing the spammer to
shoot himself in his own foot.

I wanted to throw this out in the assp world and see if anyone has any
comments about the idea. It sounds interesting...

thank you,

Barry

I hope it never becomes a part of ASSP.
1) It is not understood by most users.
2) Those that do understand it tend to be annoyed by it.
3) It will create backscatter since many SPAM messages have spoofed
FROM: addresses.
4) It will block many automated emails - like from a listserve -
since they can't respond to the 'challenge'.

Actually something like this is part of my ASSP-installation and works
very well.

[Assp-user] Bayesian Confidence Threshold

2007-05-15 Thread Dickson, Paul
If test mode is enabled, all messages will be passed along to the user,
right? In other words, the descriptions mention of 'block' is assuming
test mode is not enabled, so in the case that it is enabled, it will
just be tagged.

Also, I guess I'm a bit thick, but if I read it correctly, .001 makes
the filter more lenient? Is there a default confidence score built in
that I can use as a comparison?

Re: [Assp-user] envelope and from sender not considered.Only fromsender.

2007-05-10 Thread Dickson, Paul
As for why the address is not getting added to the whitelist this
happens because when you don't forward as an attachment there are no
headers to check thus the address in question does not get added

I am aware of that. Trying to educate 3000+ users who usually don't bother to
read brief instructional emails on handling spam is a bit of an issue:)

I'll try what you suggested, and thanks for pointing out that tool to me. I'll
have our client services department do a full eval of it. Looks 'spiffy' to
me:)

Check 'NotGreedyWhitelist' then submit, then UnCheck
'NotGreedyWhitelist' and submit.

Also

Try running the email through the Mail Analyzer to see if it shows as
whitelisted, this might also reveal why the mail is not whitelisted.

As for why the address is not getting added to the whitelist this
happens because when you don't forward as an attachment there are no
headers to check thus the address in question does not get added.

If your users are running outlook I recommend installing the outlook
toolbar add-on, it works very well.

Re: [Assp-user] Wildcard Domain

2007-05-10 Thread Dickson, Paul
I vote wildcard.

Although this adds more work for you, I highly suggest putting in an option for
administrative approval for those who may want to make that available to the
end-users.

I want to add the option to add domains to the whitelist via
email-interface.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] would represent a wildcard domain entry.
Is the star ok or should we use [EMAIL PROTECTED] ?

Re: [Assp-user] Wildcard Domain

2007-05-10 Thread Dickson, Paul
I like the idea of the list, but both would be best. maybe two email interface
addresses. One to whitelist domains, and one for domains never to whitelist..
all the while with the option to include admin aproval, thus manual maintenance
of the never whitelist domain list would be really easy.

just domain.com might make more sense to the end user who might not
understand wildcards or literals.

domain.com - perhaps easier to understand for end user?
[EMAIL PROTECTED] - if the user knows * wildcards, then this might be best,
though it is unmatched by any other convention in the assp.cfg
@domain.com - conforms to assp.cfg standard for lists of email addresses
[EMAIL PROTECTED] - conforms to assp.cfg standard for literals in
ccmail and others

I vote for * wildcard

Regarding admin approval, I'm not entirely sure it's needed. If I get
mail from [EMAIL PROTECTED], it's unlikely I'll start getting spam from
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Although If I don't get spam from [EMAIL PROTECTED], it is entirely
likely that I might get spam from [EMAIL PROTECTED] And even though I
don't get spammed from [EMAIL PROTECTED], it is entirely probable
that I'll get spammed from phishingattempt(or the like)@paypal.com

Perhaps there should be a list of domains that should never be
whitelisted, like free email domains, paypal, ebay and the like.
Individual addresses may be whitelisted, but never the whole domain.
The email whitelist interface would ignore requests to whitelist a
whole domain if it is on the no-whitelist list.

Although it's location escapes me at the moment, I remember seeing a
DNSBL list dedicated to listing free/open email services. Perhaps that
could be used to build the no-whitelist?

Is
it unreasonable to suggest there be an option to see the mail as
whitelisted if either field matches?

There is an option:

Only the envelope-sender is added/compared to the whitelist
Normal operation includes addresses in the FROM, SENDER, REPLY-TO,
ERRORS-TO, or LIST-* header fields.
This allows nearly all list email to be whitelisted. Check this option
to disable this.

[Assp-user] envelope and from sender not considered. Only from sender.

2007-05-08 Thread Dickson, Paul
So when someone forwards a mail to whitelist, the mail still gets
tagged, unless of course they know how to forward as an attachment. Is
it unreasonable to suggest there be an option to see the mail as
whitelisted if either field matches? Webmaster is whitelisted, but the
mail is still tagged because it is seen as being from bounce. 1.3.1()
