I'm not 100% sure but I haven't read anything about the SIP client
going away. I just asked Jared about it, and he said the E71 has the
SIP client still, and that they are just planning on removing them
from the N series, but leaving it in the E series phones.
2) Do I care about 3G? (is it even worth it in Canada, with essentially a
monopoly on GSM?)
Who knows. $1,000/mth for a cell phone bill from Roger's isn't very
appealing to me. Data FTW.
3) Does anyone know a good place to get an unlocked one? (this is more of a
-biz question, but I wanted this all to stay in one thread).
I got my E61i from www.cti-miami.com unlocked, and they have the E71
there as well. I was quite happy with how fast I got the phone.
Any opinions are appreciated. I don't even have to get an E71, but other
than the iPhone (which I don't want because there's no QWERTY) I haven't
heard of too many current-generation phones that the Asterisk community
likes, so I keep ending up at the E71. Props for other phones are still
appreciated though.
I use my E61i with SIP on my Asterisk box (I haven't tried the
bluetooth proximity stuff yet), and it works quite well. When I leave
and come back to my wifi network it connects automatically and
registers to my system. I can set Internet calls as the primary if I
want (I don't because I found it a bit annoying because my provider
sucked before, but maybe I'll switch it back now that I have a good
provider -- thank you Unlimitel!), and it looks pretty seamless when
you do get Internet calls. It isn't latent or anything, and you can
setup multiple lines on the phone. For places I go to often I setup
a registration which is just a copy of the SIP settings with a
different end point associated with it (same registration information
etc...), and then just assign those to the Internet Telephony settings
in the phone.
I can show you if you end up with this phone. It's a bit weird and
there is very little (no) documentation from Nokia of how to really
set this up. But once you understand, it makes sense.
The one thing I don't like about my E61i is how slow it is. I find it
much slower than other phones, but I used Jared's E71 at AstriCon, and
it is significantly faster. Some people don't like how big my phone
is, but mine is quite flat -- it just happens to be wide. That's
because it has a larger than normal screen, which also gives more
space for the keys on the keyboard (which I love -- great keyboard).
The E71 isn't as large because it has a more normal sized screen, and
the keyboard is a bit smaller, but apparently from the reviews I've
seen it's still quite useful.
That's about all I got for ya. I've been tempted to sell my E61i and
upgrade to the E71 as well. Just waiting to clear my books and figure
out how much I owe the gov't in taxes :) I'd be interested to play
with yours and see if I should do that heh.
