Hi Claudia, I had the chance evaluate the following GUIs They are all are
free and can be downloaded as an ISO image.
They all format the HD, Load a version of Linux, Asterisk and the GUI. All
required loading feature modules/apps. (except Elastix which loads
everything) Most use FreePBX for setup but the rappers for this and other
applications differ in quality and layout.
As an example the Trixbox GUI pull-down menu is a bit psychotic
For a professional (NONE freeware) look and feel, Elastix is you best bet
but I still like CentPBX for it's Night transfer feature.

So here are my Asterisks* (out of 10)

AsteriskNOW *(5)
Pros: Nice clean GUI (not FreePBX) almost all the functionality need for a
general business PBX
Cons: No feature codes Ie. *72 (they may be there but I couldn't find them)

Trixbox *** (7)
Pros: The GUI Rapper is a bit sloppy (uses FreePBX)
Cons: Trixbox are changing their business model (personally I'm confused by
it) also they have not really done very much development recently.
Elastix (8)
Pros: This is a nice framework thats up and running in minutes with no
modules to load. Uses FreePBX but comes with Sugar CRM, a billing App. and a
Calling Card App.
Cons. Default user name and password are difficult to find.
CentPBX (8)
Pros: Uses FreePBX - Stable GUI framework with DAY /NIGHT Transfer feature
Cons: Has Frog motive on web page backgrounds.

I have only evaluated these Distro's on look and feel, they all use * 1.4 so
they will be as good as the release level.

I am quite interested in your evaluation of better GUI's for Asterisk.

I have also grown weary of Trixbox, so please go ahead... I am eagerly

Technically, you aren't comparing GUIs, you're comparing turnkey asterisk
systems. Now admittedly, I don't think there is a single good bolt-on GUI
for asterisk, asterisk-gui being the only contender.

Hi Nick, you bring up a very good point. Trixbox contacts Fonality each
time you use the web interface and maybe at other times too. I only
noticed this recently when it was taking over a minute to access the first
web page due to some problem they were having with their server. Anyway,
the idea of Fonality accessing my client machines at any time keeps me
awake at night!

For the most part Trixbox has worked well, being quick to install and
offering all the features that business clients needs.
I don't think they actively leave bugs in it. Most of the applications are
bundled together from other Open Source projects the main one being FreePBX
who should really get the credit here.

With any of the distro's I've mentioned you should have no trouble
installing and configuring your system. I have installed Trixbox on a
variety of machines from a Compaq Deskpro (at my office)to 1U servers. My
test box is a 3.2 ghz CPU with 1 gig memory nothing special.

 Hi Henry,

I just wanted to say that I appreciate all your personal feedback that
you post in the asterisk list. We met over a year ago at tobys after an
 asterisk meeting.

I have used Trixbox and Elastix as a learning tool only. I see that you
actually deploy this at client sites. Have you had any major problems
 with this solution?

I have spent a great deal of time trying to understand asterisk and
freepbx. Since Trixbox was acquired by Fonality I saw it as complete no
no to deploy this product. I'll give you some reasons and I would
appreciate an honest feedback if you have the time.

 1. Can you trust Fonality with your clients? Each time you install
Trixbox its an invitation for your customers to contact Fonality. Any
issue you can't solve right away your clients can pickup the phone and
 call Fonality.

 2. Can you trust Fonality with the actual product they release. Remember
that they make no money by releasing a fully working product. They do
however make money from paid support. So if little bugs or problems come
with each release its an opportunity for them to make some money or
sway customers to their PBXtra product line.

I know the same can be said about contacting Digium but your customers
do not really see Asterisk/Digium, they see the gui which says trixbox.

 Henry L.Coleman wrote:
Hi Claudia, I had the chance evaluate the following GUIs
They are all are free and can be downloaded as an ISO image.
They all format the HD, Load a version of Linux, Asterisk and
the GUI. All required loading feature modules/apps. (except Elastix
which loads everything) Most use FreePBX for setup but the rappers for
this and other applications differ in quality and layout.
As an example the Trixbox GUI pull-down menu is a bit psychotic
For a professional (NONE freeware) look and feel, Elastix is you best
 bet
but I still like CentPBX for it's Night transfer feature.

So here are my Asterisks* (out of 10)

 AsteriskNOW *(5)
Pros: Nice clean GUI (not FreePBX) almost all the functionality need for
 a
 general business PBX
Cons: No feature codes Ie. *72 (they may be there but I couldn't find
 them)

 Trixbox *** (7)
Pros: The GUI Rapper is a bit sloppy (uses FreePBX)
Cons: Trixbox are changing their business model (personally I'm confused
by it) also they have not really done very much development recently.
 Elastix (8)
Pros: This is a nice framework thats up and running in minutes with no
modules to load. Uses FreePBX but comes with Sugar CRM, a billing App.
 and
 a Calling Card App.
Cons. Default user name and password are difficult to find.
 CentPBX (8)
Pros: Uses FreePBX - Stable GUI framework with DAY /NIGHT Transfer
 feature
Cons: Has Frog motive on web page backgrounds.

I have only evaluated these Distro's on look and feel, they all use *
 1.4
so they will be as good as the release level.

  Claudia

I am quite interested in your evaluation of better GUI's for Asterisk.

I have also grown weary of Trixbox, so please go ahead... I am eagerly
waiting your final thoughts on the matter.

I am doing some evaluations of various other management tools (GPL)
I plan to just give you a quick evaluation just to wet your appetite
If you have an interest in these evaluations give me some feedback
 on what you think.

The first one tried is CENTPBX
This uses the latest Freepbx GUI framework and can be generated for *
 1.2
 or 1.4
Has everything Trixbox has in terms of features, plus a very useful
 Night Answer feature (*28)

So far I like it because it runs 1.4 and has the complete feature set

Rating (4 asterisks out of 5)

Not so far but I've heard very good things about HWEC.

As for g729 I have not tried it in production, mainly because I have
enough bandwidth to use G711 Ulaw, when I did try it, I found the results
were similar to GSM. I have had mixed results with other open source
codecs
for Asterisk.

 Thank you Henry.

In any of your installations have you used digium hardware with HPEC?
Have you used g729 with Asterisk?

Yes, as a matter of fact I just took a brief look at this distro just a
few minutes ago

The gui is one of the best I've seen and it's nicely laid out
BUT ...(and it's a big BUT) I can't find any feature codes page
so I don't know if *98 is Voice mail or not and I can't find a list of
feature codes anywhere...very odd.
If any one knows where these are and what they are I'll take another look

 Jim Van Meggelen
 Henry,

I am curious as to how Digium has done with their development of
AsteriskNOW. Is that one that you will be evaluating?

 Jim
