[Asterisk-Users] Internet Phone Concept Question

2004-03-05 Thread Greg Kedrovsky
Hey, all. I'm new to this Asterisk stuff and have a general concept
question about making calls and whatnot over the net.

I have a 4-port TDM card and a 1-port x100p card for incoming. All is
configured and working fine. I have a _very_ simple configuration (start
simple, add bells and whistles later).

I have a cable modem hook-up and access the internet with a download
speed of 128k and upload speed of 32k. My Asterisk server sits on a LAN,
under a Freesco router running on an Pentium I machine (10BaseT cards
because).

I live in Costa Rica and would like to utilize the internet, if
possible, to call family and friends in the U.S.A. Can I do that with
Asterisk? Can I do that with standard analog phones through Asterisk?
Can I do that without having another Asterisk machine State-side?

If you have a link that would explain the concepts to me, that would be
fine. Or if you could kinda prime the pump for me so I can get the
ball rolling on my end - that'd be very much appreciated, too.

Thanks ahead of time.

 Hope this help.

Yep. This and the previous post help a lot. Thanks to both! You gave me

No, I started it with asterisk and had it running in the background.
Then, per the PDF manual, I did asterisk -r to connect to the server
and get a console. The manual says I can type quit to disconnect from
the console, leaving Asterisk running in the background. But, when I do
so, I get this message:

The QUIT and EXIT commands may no longer be used to shutdown the PBX.
Please use STOP NOW instead, if you wish to shutdown the PBX.

so you cannot bail out of
CLI with exit -- you are in console mode. Instead, start it without -c so it
respawns another service process and exits to shell, after that you can run
asterisk -r and bail out with exit all you please ;-).

That's basically what I did. I started Asterisk with asterisk and then
ran asterisk -r to get a console. When I type exit, I get the same
message as I indented above.

I type help at the command line (CLI), but didn't see anything in
there (except quit and exit) that would seem to be a way to get out
of the CLI prompt and back to a standard command line.

There may very well be another way to detach from the console, but I start
asterisk on tty5 or tty6, and leave it running there. (redhat gives you 6
console tty's by default, use [alt] + [f1,f2,f3,etc.] to switch) You can ssh
into your box and do a 'asterisk -r' to connect to the console, which is
nice for remote troubleshooting, etc. To exit this, simply type 'quit'.

I suppose I could do something like this. I supposed I could just close
the terminal window.

I run Asterisk on a headless server, and ssh into it via X on my desktop
(aterm terminal window). After the ssh connection is established, I can
check up on Asterisk. I did this yesterday by typing asterisk -r since
asterisk was already running in the background. I got a console and a
CLI prompt. I diddle and did what I needed to do at the moment. And then
thought, gee... I'd like to close the term window out. So, in my Linux
logic, I figured it would be as simple as getting out of the Asterisk
console, back to a command line, exiting superuser, exiting my ssh
session and exiting my aterm windown in X here on my desktop.

Typing quit (or exit) at the CLI prompt, though, returns this
message:

The QUIT and EXIT commands may no longer be used to shutdown the PBX.
Please use STOP NOW instead, if you wish to shutdown the PBX.

But, I don't want to shutdown the PBX. I just want out of the console
(CLI prompt) and back to my server command line. Like I said, I could
probably just close the term window and that would terminate my ssh
session. But, that's not the right way to do things.

I know I'm missing something - and it's probably pretty simple. But, I
have no idea what it is.

Thanks for the help. :-)

[Asterisk-Users] exit

2004-02-26 Thread Greg Kedrovsky
Talk about a stoopid question...

How do I exit the CLI of Asterisk. Typing exit (per the pdf manual and
my google results) brings up a message saying QUIT and EXIT are no
longer available, that STOP NOW is used to shutdow the pbx.

I do not want to shutdown the pbx. I just wanna get outta the CLI and
back to my Linux command line.

Gosh... I feel like a 1st grader that can't get my fly open to take a

[Asterisk-Users] Simple Front Gate Intercom

2004-02-26 Thread Greg Kedrovsky
I've searched several times for help on configuring a front gate
intercom through Asterisk, but I haven't come across anything. If this
is a repeat post (as well it could be due to the amount of traffic this
list experiences), sorry.

In a nutshell: Can I use Asterisk to hook up an intercom at my front
gate? My wife would like to have one of those simple
speaker/microphone intercoms. People show up at our front gate, press
the doorbell, it rings in the house. We pick up a phone on my Asterisk
system and dial (example) 105 to connect to the intercom and say, Who's
there? The dipweed at the gate leans forward, and speaks into the same
speaker he heard the voice come from and says, Joe Sixpack.

I have a very simple SOHO set-up: one incoming line (x100p) and a 4-port
TDM400P. I run 3 phones in the house (office, bedroom, downstairs). The
4th port is what I would like to use for the front gate. I have my whole
house (and front gate) cabled in Cat5e with RJ45 connectors (both data
and voice). I don't think hardware is an obstacle.

I have the 4th port set up now like the Bat Phone. Pick up the
receiver on port 4 (channel 5 in my config) and it gives a distinctive
(Brit) ring on all other (3) phones. I figured I could buy an outside
phone (no dial pad) and just use that. But, my wife insists on an
intercom. So... I need help.

Is this configurable in Asterisk? It seems to me that an intercom like
that would just be the same thing as an open phone line, no dial tone.
Then, we dial 105 (or whatever) to get the gate-com, and it opens the
line with the intercom to speak with the person wanting in.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Again, my lack of vocabulary is a pain: PABX is a PBX (e.g. Asterisk)

I think I'm going to have to go find some place that sells these around
here (San José, Costa Rica) - or units similar - and find out if this
will work. The unit actually rings the phone. With Asterisk, we don't
need that, do we? Picking up the phone (pressing the Call button?) is
what kicks Asterisk off to run the extension for the call event, right?

The specs on the W-1000 say:

For business, these doorboxes are designed to interface directly with

Being new in the area, I'm not up to speed on all the vocabulary. But,
doesn't that mean I can just plug this unit into my pbx (i.e. Asterisk)

[Asterisk-Users] Boards falling out...

2004-02-04 Thread Greg Kedrovsky
I have a TDM40B, 4-port fxs card. Each port seems to have it's own
little board on the fxs card. Each little board is not sodered in, but
rather hangs (I have a vertical case for the server) on what I would
call jumper pins (sorry, I'm not a profession geek, just a wannabe). One
of my little boards, over time, slides off those jumper pins. I just
noticed it this morning. I had to power down, seat it, and power up
again. That's a pain.

We did, though, have an earthquake this morning. That may have shaken
things loose a bit. But, it wasn't much to speak of (long, but not
strong).

Has anyone else experienced this problem? What could I do to solve it
(seat the little card a little more permanently)?

Thanks ahead of time.
