I agree, I have now had several hours flying with the Nexus and is very
good, great visibility in all conditions, fast response, and as Paul said,
it is cheap.

I'm also an XCSoar user and would like to find out whether the latest

Any information or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

 Kind regards

Subject: [Aus-soaring] Nexus 7 Installation Update

Thanks to all the people who responded to my appeal for help in integrating
the Nexus 7 into my glider. The upshot is that I decided that the
Nexus/XCSoar combo was sufficient in itself, and that to interface it with
the Flarm was of minimal added value given that I already have a Digital
Voice Synthesizer. By not interfacing I lose only the radar display and I
 can live with that.
I therefore installed it so as to draw from the glider's power supply, with
 no further interfacing. Easy.
I have now flown with it, and I must say the combination of Nexus 7 and
XCSoar is brilliant. The display is very legible in bright sunlight, and
 the
latest version of XCSoar is much improved on the version that I had in my
Altair. It is wondrously user friendly and useful in its range of
capabilities. I like it and I'll stay with it.
I'm now seeking help because during this period my Windows XP updated
itself, and now won't even see the Nexus, let alone allow files to be
 copied
across to it or from it. At the same time it has changed so that it won't
make a connection with or recognise the Nano LX data logger that I've
 bought
from John Orton to replace my trusty old Zander, now obsolete.
 Can anyone assist?
 Thanks, Paul Mander

Subject: [Aus-soaring] Invitation to Keepit Fast

Dear All,

A final invitation to Keepit’ coaching week Keepit Fast to run from Monday 19th
to Saturday 24th November 2012 at Lake Keepit. We still have about 5 places
available.

Keepit Fast will focus on developing cross country speed and competition
competitiveness and replaces Speed Week, which sadly Paul Mander will not be
staging this year. The Curriculum is attached.

Our principal coach will be G Dale. Bruce Taylor and Brad Edwards have agreed
to support him. Bruce and Brad need no introduction. For those who don’t know
G, he is a British Gliding Association national coach and a successful racing
pilot. He has been UK Club Class Champion, come within the top 10 twice in
world championships and is a regular mountain soaring Instructor at Omarama.
He has been CFI at two major British Clubs, one of which is Lasham. Those of
you who enjoyed G’s coaching last year will know that he is a superb educator.

If you are interested in participating could you let me know?

Kindest regards,

Chris Bowman

[Aus-soaring] Sky 1 Installation Update

2012-10-23 Thread Texler, Michael
I have have just installed something fantastic.

It is called Sky(TM).

It is applied to the entire outer surface of the canopy.
Although it is solar powered it doesn't need batteries, or a link to a
GPS unit or any extra holes drilled into your instrument panel.

It's visibility in bright sunlight is really good and most studies have
agreed that its presence augments the gliding experience.
It is available in a range of colours and patterns.

Please see this link:

BTW: This is humour (sort of...)

Really nice to hear that. Another user!
I've been running sky for several years now. I really love it now. But my
first thoughts were:
That will never catch on. There are too many options available. There is no
consistency - it's different every time you start it up.
After a year and a bit I realised that Sky(TM) is true Open Source and
eventually figured out what its all about.
Should we - maybe - start a Sky(TM) user group? This might deflect people
from being stuck to Panel(Inc) or even Smartphone(PTY)
;-)

My favourite features so far are:

* SD - Sun Display
* MicoSD - Sun Display from the ground
* GPS - Grounded people (are) sad
* Blue tooth - while drinking Gatorade
* Serial - thermals, aka streets
* Battery life - keeps on going until the sun goes down
* LCD - Lunch, Cuppa then Dinner
* Logging - Those loggers certainly kick up the thermals in the mountains

What are your favourites.

Scott
P.S. Do you get the feeling we are looking forward to summer.

Re: [Aus-soaring] Sky 1 Installation Update

It's a fairly mature product, but like any ancient system it has
exhibited some difficult to fix bugs and usability defects.

By far the worst aspect of Sky(TM) is that its rendering of other
aircraft defies basic user interface standards. Modern systems
have benefited from quite a lot of psychological research which
keeps harmless or trivial user interface elements unobtrusive and
promotes important elements to the forefront of the user's attention,
but Sky(tm) comes from an earlier generation of systems where that
wasn't always the case.

In particular, the most visually prominent Sky(TM) objects are
the ones that are least harmful and easiest to avoid (security in
the cloud!). The most visually unobtrusive objects are the ones
which can cause irretrievable data loss if you accidentally
interact with them, something that even the most well-trained
experts occasionally have trouble with.

If we were designing it today, we'd make other aircraft as prominent
as clouds, and perhaps impose a modal Are you sure? dialog when
you touch one, to make sure you're really intending to die in a
crash before allowing it to happen.

The architecture of Sky(TM) makes this usability deficiency very
difficult to fix. In the same way that the UNIX community has
greybeards who say that rm -rf / is easy to avoid if you don't
accidentally type it (but seem, to a man, to have accidentally
typed it themselves!), the Sky(TM) user community is full of
curmudgeons who claim that you can overcome its usability
deficiencies by adopting a See and Avoid strategy while
simultaneously entertaining us with bar stories about near
misses^H^H^H^H^H^Hhits, so perhaps part of the problem is
architectural, and part of it is lack of interest in finding a
fix.

Meanwhile, newer users are working-around the deficiencies with
toolkits layered on top of Sky(TM), just like we layer GNOME and
KDE on top of UNIX to improve its usability. There's an active
development community engaged in solving these problems with
overlays such as FLARM, cheap ADSB-* equipment, and various PDA
applications.

Best of luck to them, I say.
