Re: [Aus-soaring] OLC triangles
Hi Gary and all, Have seen this a few times lately... My understanding is that OLC requires the flight track to be 'closed' ie you cross the path of your outgoing track when finishing. As in the past JoeyGlide will comprise of the Australian Junior Nationals for pilots who are 25 or under on the 9th December, as well as a coaching week for junior pilots who are solo but would benefit from some XC coaching before flying in a comp on their own. Gliders were rigged in the cold and wet of the practise day which was blown out with 25kts of wind. We set tasks and gridded gliders using hard surfaces only as the entire grass areas on the aerodrome were unusable. On the first day we only bogged two cars and one glider but we achieved a competition day. Day 2 proceeded the same then it rained some more and the wind blew. The Temora ground marshals managed the impossible and herded the wild cats into gridding on narrow bitumen and car parks without destroying the airfield grass or losing crew and cars in the bog holes. Today we managed the extraordinary by gridding about 30 gliders on an active runway, vacating the grid of all personnel for the Aviation Museum flying display and had gliders launching within about 15 minutes of the last museum aircraft display. [Aus-soaring] Trailer Stuff
Hi All, I am looking for someone (preferably in the southern NSW area) who is capable (and willing) to adapt a trailer to fit our IS28. We've got the trailer from our old Blanik which is now in the museum, and we are looking to make it fit the IS28. I understand that the trailer may need a fair bit of work to avoid damaging the IS28. If anyone has any knowledge/ability in this area, or knows of anyone who might be able to help out, could you let me know? Hi All, I'm looking at changing mobile phone networks. Does anyone know any details on which networks have best coverage (especially country NSW where I do most of my XC flying)? I understand that some networks are near useless outside the CBDs and increase the chance of a long walk after an outlanding. Re: [Aus-soaring] JoeyGlide 2010 - Practice Days 1 2
JG is over for another year, and what a year it was. After the last minute chance of venue, we ended up with flying and tasking EVERY DAY of the comp (including two practice days), a total of eight consecutive flying days. This had never been done before in the seven years of JoeyGlide. Thanks again to everyone who helped out, especially the people involved in the last minute move. Special mentions to the Waikerie Gliding Club, lead by 'Super-John' Hudson who made everything run smoothly and drove the tug every day; Jean for cooking up a wonderful meal for us every night; Anne Wolfe who sorted us all out with accommodation; all the Waikerie club members who staffed the bar and put up with us invading their clubhouse; Grant Johnson for keeping his watchful eye on us as safety officer; Cath Conway for helping hugely with the move, setting us great tasks (even if I didn't make it around them all) and coaching in the K21 and Duo; Andrew Horton for his continued generosity to the Juniors and helping out coaching; and Derek Spencer, Paul Mander, George Brown and Bernard Eckey for their time in the back seat coaching for the week. A huge thanks also to Gus Stewart who comp directed the week. Having only taken on the job six weeks ago, he then took on the huge task of moving the comp only two weeks ago, Gus then pulled off an awesome comp with everyone: competitors, coachees and anyone else who popped in, having a great time. If he wasn't buggering off to England for a few years he'd have a job for life. If there's anyone I've missed out I apologise, and thank you! Now time to start looking forward to next year! At the pilots meeting it was decided to move the comp up north to Queensland next year, and Adam Woolley was nominated CD. I'm sure we'll be hearing from him before long! Happened at the Goodwood air show in UK about 4 weeks ago, pilot walked (crawled?) away with no major injury. What I am interested in is how he got to the point where the photo sequence started, as he apparently stalled off a roll whilst on tow at low level, as part of an air show sequence. There were also You-Tube sequences of the previous week's display (I was at the show but missed that act) where a pen came out of the pilot's pocket during a negative G manoeuvre and was caught - fortunately - before disappearing into the control circuits. Also interesting where the pilot then restrained said pen! See the Culdrose sequence 2 from http://www.youtube.com/user/SwiftAerobatics I will not make further comment!! Re: [Aus-soaring] Another UK accident
My understanding is that the original tasks hadn't gone near Silverstone (where the Red Arrows were displaying), and that the NOTAM was only briefed as a 'nav warning' (whatever that means). The task was then hurriedly changed on the grid when the soarable air wasn't where forecast, and the new task went within 200 yards of the restricted airspace, and the start gate was opened just before the restricted airspace became active, which was only a few km down track. I'm sure the debate as to whether it was the task setters/briefers/competitors responsibility will go on for a long time, but the situation is that the RAF, general aviation community and the general public have all been upset by this- not great news, or publicity for the sport. Re: [Aus-soaring] Cambridge Connection Problem
Hi Mike, I was using an ATEN one, which the guy in the shop seemed to think worked with anything, apparently not. The Belkin one seems to work fine with the GPS-NAV, I can't get it to work with the EW I'm also using, but you can't have everything! As has been said here lots before: The Dontronics USB to serial works every time. www.dontronics.com What brand were you using? I went out today and bought a Belkin one, and it seems to work fine, at least with the Cambridge. Thanks to everyone who has helped! Subject: Re: [Aus-soaring] Cambridge Connection Problem Thanks very much for your advice everyone. I have tried the CAI software, and I get a similar problem. It seems to connect to the logger, and find a list of flights. However when I try to download the flights, I get a Could Not Find a Cambridge Recorder on Com 1, Make sure your recorder is connected and turned on. I thought the problem might be connected to the power source, but I have just bought a new one, and it has the same problem. I have been unable to find any other computers to try it out on, to try and narrow down whether it is a logger problem, or a computer problem. Jarek, Unfortunately I don't have the necessary wires/connectors to attach my PDA to the GPS-Nav. Any other comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It was solved by disabling the antivirus software on the computer. It depends on what antivirus program is on there - AVG does not cause a problem, but the one we had on the computer earlier did (can't remember what it was called). There is normally no problem using SeeYou to download the Cambridge Loggers. Regards Jenny Ganderton Adam Webb wrote: Hi All, I am trying to connect a Cambridge GPS-NAV to SeeYou.
