Re: [Aus-soaring] OLC triangles

Hi Gary and all,

Have seen this a few times lately... My understanding is that OLC requires
the flight track to be 'closed' ie you cross the path of your outgoing
track when finishing. (for triangle scores, not standard olc)

I could be wrong, but this seems fairly consistent with other flights I
have seen.

Cheers

 Am I missing something here?

Can anybody explain the mechanics of this to me? Is there a glitch on the

With the wind coming straight onto the sheer cliffs, would there be enough

I believe there is a club (Grampians?) that do an annual camp further

[Aus-soaring] JOEYGLIDE 2012

2012-06-06 Thread Adam Webb

Hi All,

Entries for *JoeyGlide 2012* are now open!

Dates: *9th-16th December* (note Sunday-Sunday to avoid clashing with
the NSW State Comps the week before)

Location: *Lake Keepit, NSW*.

As in the past JoeyGlide will comprise of the Australian Junior
Nationals for pilots who are 25 or under on the 9th December, as well as
a coaching week for junior pilots who are solo but would benefit from
some XC coaching before flying in a comp on their own. As in previous
years we will be using the Juniors' own handicapping system which allows
any glider with a wingspan of 15m (or less) to compete competitively,
dry or wet. //

The entry fee is just $150 (increasing to $250 after 31st Oct) for the
contest, and a $75 deposit towards your flying (increasing to $150) is
all that is required to register for the coaching week.

We have entries rolling in already, so any junior pilots out there get
your name down! This is going to be the biggest and best JoeyGlide so
far so if you have any Junior members in your club who aren't on this
list, please pass the message on to them.

thirded!

Thanks to everyone for making it such a friendly contest, and all the
organisers at Temora GC for making us so welcome and putting on such a
great comp in less than ideal conditions.

And thanks to Mac and Co for showing me how it should be done!

The comp started in soggy conditions with trailers unable to be parked
in the grass areas which were under water. Gliders were rigged in the
cold and wet of the practise day which was blown out with 25kts of
wind. We set tasks and gridded gliders using hard surfaces only as the
entire grass areas on the aerodrome were unusable. On the first day we
only bogged two cars and one glider but we achieved a competition day.
Day 2 proceeded the same then it rained some more and the wind blew.
The Temora ground marshals managed the impossible and herded the wild
cats into gridding on narrow bitumen and car parks without destroying
the airfield grass or losing crew and cars in the bog holes. Today we
managed the extraordinary by gridding about 30 gliders on an active
runway, vacating the grid of all personnel for the Aviation Museum
flying display and had gliders launching within about 15 minutes of
the last museum aircraft display.

Five days of challenging and rewarding flying and happy pilots at the
dinner tonight.

I have a flyWithCE Flight Recorder and Logbook software which can
extract the igc, kml and nmea files from the recorder and copy them to
my computer running Windows XP.

It would be very convenient if I could copy the files from the flight
recorder directly to my laptop running a version of Linux. The flight
recorder does not appear as a USB flash drive nor as a USB HDD. Does
anyone on this list know of a way to get the Flight Recorder to talk to
a Linux computer?

[Aus-soaring] Trailer Stuff

2011-02-24 Thread Adam Webb
Hi All,

I am looking for someone (preferably in the southern NSW area) who is
capable (and willing) to adapt a trailer to fit our IS28. We've got the
trailer from our old Blanik which is now in the museum, and we are
looking to make it fit the IS28. I understand that the trailer may need
a fair bit of work to avoid damaging the IS28.

If anyone has any knowledge/ability in this area, or knows of anyone who
might be able to help out, could you let me know?

I'm looking at changing mobile phone networks. Does anyone know any details

Re: [Aus-soaring] JoeyGlide 2010 - Practice Days 1 2

2010-12-19 Thread Adam Webb
JG is over for another year, and what a year it was.

After the last minute chance of venue, we ended up with flying and tasking
EVERY DAY of the comp (including two practice days), a total of eight
consecutive flying days. This had never been done before in the seven years
of JoeyGlide.

Thanks again to everyone who helped out, especially the people involved in
the last minute move. Special mentions to the Waikerie Gliding Club, lead by
'Super-John' Hudson who made everything run smoothly and drove the tug every
day; Jean for cooking up a wonderful meal for us every night; Anne Wolfe who
sorted us all out with accommodation; all the Waikerie club members who
staffed the bar and put up with us invading their clubhouse; Grant Johnson
for keeping his watchful eye on us as safety officer; Cath Conway for
helping hugely with the move, setting us great tasks (even if I didn't make
it around them all) and coaching in the K21 and Duo; Andrew Horton for his
continued generosity to the Juniors and helping out coaching; and Derek
Spencer, Paul Mander, George Brown and Bernard Eckey for their time in the
back seat coaching for the week.

A huge thanks also to Gus Stewart who comp directed the week. Having only
taken on the job six weeks ago, he then took on the huge task of moving the
comp only two weeks ago, Gus then pulled off an awesome comp with everyone:
competitors, coachees and anyone else who popped in, having a great time. If
he wasn't buggering off to England for a few years he'd have a job for life.

If there's anyone I've missed out I apologise, and thank you!

Now time to start looking forward to next year! At the pilots meeting it was
decided to move the comp up north to Queensland next year, and Adam Woolley
was nominated CD. I'm sure we'll be hearing from him before long!

Thanks again to everyone involved! It was a great week. Now back to work L.

Hi All,

What a great two days it has been so far! This time last week we had been
told that Narromine was unflyable, and we may have to cancel the
competition. Now here we are, in Waikerie, with all of our competitors
having made the change and arrived onsite ready for a great week.

Here's an extract from the blog that I am publishing on the Joeyglide
Website (http://www.joeyglide.com.au )

11/12/2010 - Practice Day 1

First day of Joeyglide 2010!

High winds and low temperatures caused a fairly conservative task to be set,
an AAT with turnpoints at Maggea, Taldra and Loxton A/F. Conditions
certainly tested pilots on their first day, and a few ended up in paddocks.

Still, a successful day and a good chance to test the scoring system and the
pilot's routines.

 http://www.soaringspot.com/jg2010/results/club/task/day-1.html Task

 http://www.soaringspot.com/jg2010/results/club/daily/day-1.html Scores

12/12/2010 - Practice Day 2

Due to the hurried relocation of the comp, a second practice day was
declared. Initial weather reports showed inclement and unfavourable weather,
with convection stopping hurriedly at 1630 hrs.

As such, a 2.5 hour AAT with turnpoints at Taplan east then Maggea was
declared, giving pilots lots of options if the weather turned foul.

As it turned out, by the time the last glider was launched the sky began to
clear and the pilots had a good run. Top speeds of just under 100 km/h were
achieved, and pilots reported 10-11 kt lift, with all pilots returning to
the airfield at the end of the day. Better than expected conditions have
caused a lot of pilots to have big smiles at the end of the day.

We are now looking at the weather over the next few days and the outlook
amongst the pilots is positive, with a few strong days expected in the
coming week.

We have been lucky enough to be visited by certain Major Sponsor, whom you
may recognise in the middle of the attached photo.

Be sure to follow the JoeyGlide 2010 website and the scores, which are

insurance, but also helping with insurance including allowing minimum hours

[Aus-soaring] IS28 Trailer

2010-11-18 Thread Adam Webb
Hi All,

The Australian Junior GC is looking for a trailer to transport its 'new'
IS28 around this Summer (initially from Bunyan to Narromine), until we can
get a more permanent solution sorted. Does anyone know of a trailer which
could be used for this? Possibly a Blanik trailer which is sitting idle and
wouldn't require too much in the way of modification?

If anyone knows of any options, please let me know!

If anyone is hoping to fly at JoeyGlide, but struggling with the costs could

have any interest. We will invite formal applications after the meeting, but

Does anybody out there have any information regarding the launching of
gliders by Motor Falke, or indeed, any other motor glider that may be used

be some such happening in Europe? I am aware of Ultra lights acting as tugs

Wombat and All,

Was Shoreham RAFA airshow as far as I know. Many of the displays on the program
had cancelled that day due to the weather, but Mike Newman, flying the Swift,
decided to go ahead. He suffered three broken vertebrae.

 Hi Tim

The whole thing has been reported previously here, and at least 6 of the 8
 photos also!

Happened at the Goodwood air show in UK about 4 weeks ago, pilot walked
(crawled?) away with no major injury.

What I am interested in is how he got to the point where the photo sequence
started, as he apparently stalled off a roll whilst on tow at low level, as
part  of an air show sequence.

There were also You-Tube sequences of the previous week's display (I was at
the show but missed that act) where a pen came out of the pilot's pocket
during a negative G manoeuvre and was caught - fortunately - before
disappearing into the control circuits. Also interesting where the pilot then
 restrained said pen!

See the Culdrose sequence 2 from http://www.youtube.com/user/SwiftAerobatics

I will not make further comment!! Remember this is an air show performance!!!

If you think that is funny, perhaps you should think again.  If you thought
at all.  Did the pilot live?  Is he in a wheelchair for life?

Perhaps the most disgraceful post ever to appear on this forum.

Re: [Aus-soaring] Another UK accident

2010-08-24 Thread Adam Webb
My understanding is that the original tasks hadn't gone near Silverstone
(where the Red Arrows were displaying), and that the NOTAM was only briefed
as a 'nav warning' (whatever that means). The task was then hurriedly
changed on the grid when the soarable air wasn't where forecast, and the new
task went within 200 yards of the restricted airspace, and the start gate
was opened just before the restricted airspace became active, which was only
a few km down track.

I'm sure the debate as to whether it was the task
setters/briefers/competitors responsibility will go on for a long time, but
the situation is that the RAF, general aviation community and the general
public have all been upset by this- not great news, or publicity for the
sport.

Hi Adam,

Don't think age of the pilots involved makes a scrap of difference, being
nationals one would hope the necessary experience would have provided better
outcomes. I read a number of posts in various forums (would forae be
correcter?) and the task was close but not through airspace. There is some
confusion if it was briefed appropriately.

I knew someone would point that out! Sadly yes, it did happen there. It
would've only been marginally better if it happened at a seniors.. Spoke to
Andy May the other night about it, he said it was due to poor task setting.

Re: [Aus-soaring] Cambridge Connection Problem

2009-11-25 Thread Adam Webb
Hi Mike,

I was using an ATEN one, which the guy in the shop seemed to think worked
with anything, apparently not. The Belkin one seems to work fine with the
GPS-NAV, I can't get it to work with the EW I'm also using, but you can't
have everything!

Cheers for your help,

Hi Adam,

Belkin works OK most of the time. We've had some problems with them.

As has been said here lots before: The Dontronics USB to serial works
every time.

Hi All,

I have found the problem, it was the USB-Serial connector I was
using. I went out today and bought a Belkin one, and it seems to
work fine, at least with the Cambridge.

Thanks to everyone who has helped!

Thanks very much for your advice everyone.

I have tried the CAI software, and I get a similar problem. It seems
to connect to the logger, and find a list of flights. However when I
try to download the flights, I get a Could Not Find a Cambridge
Recorder on Com 1, Make sure your recorder is connected and turned on.

I thought the problem might be connected to the power source, but I
have just bought a new one, and it has the same problem. I have been
unable to find any other computers to try it out on, to try and
narrow down whether it is a logger problem, or a computer problem.

Jarek, Unfortunately I don't have the necessary wires/connectors to
attach my PDA to the GPS-Nav.

Any other comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Adam

Hi All,

See You will only download flights from earlier model Cambridge
models such as 20 or 25. The Cambridge 302 model require Cambridge
download software version 2.5.6.0 . Attempting with See You has
exactly the results described by Adam. Once dowloaded by the
Cambridge program the files can be read and displayed by See you,

Hi Adam
I had the same problem with our club ones recently. It was solved by
disabling the antivirus software on the computer.
It depends on what antivirus program is on there - AVG does not
cause a problem, but the one we had on the computer earlier did
(can't remember what it was called).

There is normally no problem using SeeYou to download the Cambridge
Loggers.
