Yeah I was kinda thinking no so much profit, more of a user pays type of
scheme, where those that bend them pay the huge premiums, and those that dont,
can still afford coverage, I read somewhere a transcript of a speech Mr.
Iggulden made at Lake Keepit, a lot of years ago, and that was some very
powerful stuff, it was all about where we came from, ( in the GFA sense), and
where we were going,I think that we have strayed a little from that path, I'm
sure there are signs directing us back, we just need to see them.

[Aus-soaring] our magazine

2011-09-07 Thread JR
Is'nt the new look magazine unreal, but I must say I was a little disturbed by
the Presidents article on our ageing glider fleet. For starters my club had a
plan to fly our blanik for at least its 3750 hours, which would have put
somewhere near 60,000 dollars in our bank account, but thats not to be, and it
would seem that, having had that taken away from us, we are now going to be
paying more to GFA for AEF's aswell, where will it all stop. And as for nice
new plastic gliders, I have seen some fairly shabby looking examples of them
aswell, and the maintenance for me doesnt change from plastic, wood or metal, I
do the same job on them all . It does'nt matter what its made from or how old
it is, an inspection is an inspection. And on the subject of ageing aircraft, I
noticed in CASA's booklet on ageing aircraft, GFA didnt get a mention, and we
are probably leading the field in old aircraft and how to maintain them,
something I think we should be proud of So I guess what will happen is all
the little clubs will disappear, and all the big clubs will be left to cover
the ever increasing costs of GFA and all the people who know how to maintain
sailplanes will disappear aswell.I assume flarms will become extinct as there
wont be that many gliders left flying. So I guess this means the end of the
horse drawn zeppelin...

Well said Macca,
where we are, flying has been hampered by weather, and my students dont say I
wish we had something new to fly they say I wish we could fly, and at the
moment the 2 seater in our club is a kookaburra, and when they can fly they are
damn happy to be in the air, and thats what is important to them, and I must
say thats how I feel aswell, I get as much pleasure out of flying the Oly as I
do flying a discus, or asw20.

D ,
you can still drive a morris minor.
we have 6 young people in our club from 15 to 18, and at present they are
learning to fly in a 1964 kookaburra, ( which is in exceptional condition )
and do you know the only thing that bothers these people is not that the
glider isnt plastic, it is because the weather is crap and we cant fly... go
figure :)
and as for maintenance, I worked in the industry for quite a few years, and
I have seen a lot of plastic that took me more than a couple of weeks to get
back into the correct condition to fly, its all about how things get looked
after, blaniks take a little more, but they are brilliant at teaching people
to fly, and do maintenance.

Have experienced first hand Morning Glory roll clouds at Burketown
 in Sep'95 ...

 http://www.glidingcaboolture.org.au/95MG%20slide%20show%2001.htm

and also a roll cloud at Caboolture in Aug'09 where the
characteristics of the airmass as it passed over the airfield was
identical to that of a Carpentaria wave in transit (on the ground as
it passed over, it felt like someone had turned off the lights and
 opened the fridge door) ...

http://www.glidingcaboolture.org.au/Morning%20Glory%20at%20YCAB%2008Aug09.htm

have also viewed many photos and read many stories on the web but have
not (before the Bass Straight pic) seen lightning with a Morning Glory
 type roll cloud.

  Hello Mal (et al),

That device already exists. Its called a PowerFLARM:

  http://www.butterfly.aero/powerflarm/fly/

  and/or

  http://www.lxavionics.co.uk/traffic-monitor.htm

This looks like its just about to go into full production.

Note that its quoted as being able to run for 8 hours on six AA batteries (or
from a glider battery, obviously, as an alternative).

i.e. presumably the current draw isn't unreasonable.

That doesn't magically solve the economic question, but it does suggest that
the actual technology you require here (along with a Mode-S transponder, I
guess) is certainly available (or nearly so).

I must say that I find the notion of a combination Flarm and ADS-B to be
highly appealing as a safety tool. Its eye-opening (literally) to see the thing
the ADS-B in my Cirrus picks up before I see them out of the window.

  Simon

Personally I 100% support technology being used for collision avoidance the

per aircraft far out weighs the cost of one life.

I am sure that negotiated properly some costs could be shared by GFA and

CASA Discussion Paper Response - Urgent Action Required

To: GFA Members, Gliding Clubs and Regional Gliding Associations

  Urgent Action Required

See the response by ASAC to CASA relating to Discussion Paper 1006AS
In a nutshell, it proposes to mandate universal fitting of ADSB and Mode S to
all aircraft for use in all classifications of airspace. This is completely
unacceptable to sport aviation generally and gliding particularly.

The GFA will be submitting a response which will express similar
views to those of ASAC.

It is important that as many responses as possible are submitted
expressing concerns about the proposal and at the very least expressing strong
support for the ASAC submission.

Submissions can be made easily by individuals and club
representatives via CASA website Response to Regulatory Change Proposal.

Detailed individual responses would be preferred but a response which
just expresses dissatisfaction with CASA's consultation and then notes for each
item that changes would make it acceptable, with a final comment supporting the
ASAC paper will at least get the message across.

It would greatly assist our position if each organisation can ensure
a response on their behalf before 30 November and encourage all individual
members to do the same. Apologies for the short notice.

 My 2.2c

I spend a lot of my current flying time instructing from the back seat
of: ASK-21, Puchacz, Twin Astir I and II, DG-1000s. Have spent many
hours in the back seats of: Bocian 1E, Bergfalke IV, KRO-3 Puchatek,
Janus, and some time in IS-28 and L-13 Blaniks ! ...;-)

Agreed, the higher performance types are nice to fly (dare I say, look
nice) when you know what you are doing and have had some experience
under you belt. But they are much less forgiving of bad handling, it is
very easy to get into high energy situations that would overload most
low hour/early solo pilots. Then there are more controls such as flaps
and undercarriage to worry about. The lower performance trainers tend to
be much more forgiving of mishandling.

I don't think putting ab-initio into a high performance a/c is the best
idea. You want to send them solo in a type that is easy to handle. It
makes sense to send a pilot solo in a glider type that they have trained
in. Then you graduate the pilot up through higher performance types.

I certainly agree with low hour pilots going along on cross country
flights as P2 with an experienced pilot in higher performance a/c. This
seems to be a way to get people interested (most low hour pilots who
have done this have enjoyed the experience).

As Catherine said, GA is still using Cessna 152, 172 for basic training,
although Diamond air is muscling in on the market. You don't see ab
initio GA pilots training in high performance a/c.

 P.S.
My very brief summary of trainers (from handling point of view)...

ASK21: Good trainer, docile handling, can be aerobatted (can do rolls
too), spinning needs spin kit. Good visibility.
Puchacz: Good trainer, not as docile in handling, spins like a top! can
 be aerobatted for inverted flight
Twin Astir: Good trainer, docile, can loop, spinning requires nose
whiskers. Visibility from back seat not so good.
DG-1000s: Requires more skill to fly (can build up speed easily), more
involved weight and balance system required for safe flight, can spin
and loop in 20m mode, more advanced aeros in 18m mode. Good visibility.
Bocian 1E: Docile Handling, Loops, Spins like a top. Good visibility.
Bergfalke: Requires more precise flying technique, likes good landings,
doesn't spin that well. Good visibility.
Puchatek: Docile, Spins well, Loops, Great visibility.
Janus: Requires more skill (slippery, has flaps, U/C, all flying tail),
 good visibility.
IS-28: Handles well. Needs to be provoked to spin. Good visibility.
L-13 Blanik: Requires more skill if you are going to use the flaps.
Handles well otherwise. Visibility not so good out of the back seat.

I guess you are referring to:

2003 Service Bulletin 315-64/2. (As GFA AD 590)

 Furthermore:
Didn't Grob do static test and restored the original flight speed
limitations and maneuver operations for the Twin II and allowed the Twin
II Acro only basic aerobatic maneuvers (spins, lazy eights, chandelles,
stall turns, steep turns, and positive loops)?

 Refer to AD 606
 http://2009.gfa.org.au/Docs/ADs/GFA%20AD%20606%20Issue%201.pdf

The Astir II was loopable, before the AD.

I don't loop the Astir I, because it is placarded no aerobatics!

I suspect more a/c will have their aerobatic ratings removed as the
 fleet ages.

 Sorry for any confusion.

Lots of Dutch and Germans, and lots of very interesting and historic

Most people seem to be staying up in good thermals in spite of the 15 kt

Have you ever done any of these fixes before and if not, have you any
concepts of how we can acheive a fix. I would imagine that we will be
required to cut a hole in the lower surface and then extract the bolt and
worn busch replace and then repair.
 Any ideas would be appreciated.
 Thanks again

  Hi Tom,
Thanks for the newsletter, there is some interesting reading.
On a technical issue, Our DG-505 (VMF) is suffering from worn busches
on
  the
inboard arm of the airbrakes. There is considerable movement fore and
  aft.
Have you ever done any of these fixes before and if not, have you any
concepts of how we can acheive a fix. I would imagine that we will be
required to cut a hole in the lower surface and then extract the bolt
and
worn busch replace and then repair.
  Any ideas would be appreciated.
  Thanks again
  Ian Patching. VMFG

Hi all, I know this type of question has been asked a lot, but I've searched
the threads and I'm not clear. I'm a student pilot and want to get a simple GPS
logger to display my flights on Google Earth for my own enjoyment (ie no plans
to make badge claims and the like yet). I want to be able to carry it in my
pocket and download the file later to my PC to display as a kml or igc file.
I've seen two mentioned - a Wintec G-Trender which has a screen and a Holux
M1200E which is more compact, no screen and is Bluetooth (though a USB data
cable is available). Has anyone had any experience with these units and know
whether they can do what I want, or can recommend a cheap compact device to do
what I want it to do please?

  Cheers

Subject: [Aus-soaring] why people go gliding

This side topic was raised after Simon had his mumble on BLIPMAPs and
 related stuff.

Accepting that for many/most; the hobby of gliding is just that; a
distinct segment in life with other quite separate segments like
 family, work, other associations.

And for some/ a few; gliding is an integral part of who they are, what
their life is about, and there are welded linkages to family, work and
 other associations.

So being interested in electric motors - get a mix of electric vehicles
(car, boat, plane)(each 100 of these = 1MW) together, hook them to
buildings (notionally for recharge so that you don't frighten the
beauracrats), hook the buildings to on-site renewables and mains; and
presto - a base load contributor to the mains transmission system and
reliance on traditional (coal, nuclear) power generation declines. Wind
farms, hot rocks, solar chimney power stations suffice.

All because of Antares, Tesla, (battery powered Stemme?) etc.

If you are a hobby sailplaner, none of this will connect in your head.
If you are connected to emergent thinking (V2G, etc.) it will.
No, we don't now need a thread that there aren't 100 electric
 cars,boats,planes out there.
30 years ago I didn't have my own airfield, sailplanes, museum etc. But
at that time, it was a target worth having a shot at. And now the
 targets have moved on.

Last Saturday the young turks at Geelong Gliding Club based at Bacchus
Marsh organised a dawn to dusk flying day.

Dawn was at 6.00 AM and the first launch was at 6.10. BBQ breakfast and lunch
were provided at nominal cost along with festive treats like turkey rolls and
mince pies. Both winch and aero tows were available and all enjoyed the day.
Some members of the other Bacchus clubs, VMFG and Beaufort, also took the
opportunity to have some winch launches. Apart from the flying it turned into a
social occasion.

As the sun was slowly sinking into the west at about 20.40 the last launch
was done and when complete and the aircraft were safely put away all retired to
the clubhouse to celebrate what was a great days flying.

No records set but there were almost 70 launches done of which about 40 were
by winch, and as things turned out our youngest member, Ailsa, had both the
first and last launch of the day.

The ford dealership that serviced my falcon managed to fit a new bonnet

their service department almost ended badly. The cable very effectively held
the pedal in the most depressed position. Very unsettling when you take your

It's an interesting observation Mal, and one that has worrying
overtones. It's been a long time since I flew a Club Libelle, but
I've a feeling that they also had the parallelogram control column setup
with a similar trim mechanism. If that's the case, I can think of at

which defied reasonable explanation - at least at the limited level of
information which filtered back to the ordinary GFA members.

Does anyone know if there was ever a A/D (or an ops advice of some sort)

  Happy Birthday!
This coming saturday, 5th December, marks the 100 th Anniversary of Human
Flight in Australia.
At the sand dunes around Narrabeen, George Taylor flew his glider. The glider
flew approx 30 flights that day in 1909, the longest being 100 yards. It was
also flown by his wife.

Accordingly, the day is being marked with a celebration at North Narabeen
Park (Rat Park) on the saturday, starting at 9 am.. The park is a stones throw
away from the dunes where the first flights were undertaken.

I will be attending with Replica #1 Taylor Glider built by the Australian
Gliding Museum. Others are coming from Victoria to assist on the day but if
gliding enthusiasts from around Sydney (or further) came along it would be
great to see you.

Although the glider would today be classed as a hang glider that doesn't
really matter, it was the start of gliding and aeronautics in Australia. Less
than 3 months later they put an engine in a glider and made the first tug.

I hope we can meet some of you on the weekend. The trip is being fully funded
by me, however if you would like to make a donation to the Australian Gliding
Museum it would help defray my costs. (contact me for details)

If you can't make Sydney, then perhaps people could pause for a few moments
and remember just how we got to where we are and the people who made what we do
today possible.

  Cheers
  Ian Patching.

I don't really want to start a discussion on who was first or second, that
really doesn't concern me, but I suppose I took that risk when I put the
posting onto the Aus soaring that there would be people who would want to
start an in depth discussion about who was first.
The facts that are now generally accepted are, that the glider was built
principally by George Taylor with the help of a number of people including
 Hallstrom.
The glider flew with a number of different people on the day, approx 30
flights, including all those who helped construct it and Taylors wife.
On all but the last flight helpers were holding onto tethers which helped
control the glider. In all respects like a kite.
On the last flight with Taylor as pilot the tethers were released and he
flew the glider approx 100 yards and landed in the sea.
So in all recent correspondence and historical writings, all those who
helped who can be named are, including Hallstrom, but Taylor is recognised
as the first person to fly an aircraft in Australia.
Please, if you can help, there have already been some donations, then do
so,.if you want to start an Aus-Soaring type discussion, go ahead, but
really it should be a celebration of our history.
 Thankyou,
 Ian P

I have to offer my congratulations on this event and building the
replicas. Great stuff. But since i am studying for my masters in
pedantry (something this group is good at...)

I know nothing about nothing, but in Alan Ash's excellent book on the
history of gliding in Australia, there's a strong claim that it was Ed
Hallstrom (Sir) who built and flew this glider first, but Ed does not
seem to be cracking a mention.

  See:

http://www.keepitsoaring.com/LKSC/index.php?option=com_contentview=articleid=97Itemid=72

Isn't it true that the word hang auf Deutsch means slope, so all
these early gliders were really called slope gliders? The faces at
the Wasserkuppe are called names such as the Pelzner Hang and South
  West Hang.

Another oddity, is that it's hard to see that you could fly any glider
nowadays at Narrabeen unless you managed a turn immediately after take
  off.

Good luck and don't get your feet wet!

 Aw, come on.

You have to admit it was sure as hell fun to burn the mothballs
(naphthalene) to put the soot on the barograph foil.

Then to wind the clockwork mechanism up (hoping that you didn't overwind
 it).
The ticking sound from behind the seat was reassuring (much like a time
 bomb wasn't).

Then to put hairspray on the holy relic to prevent the graven image from
 being corrupted.

It sort of lent a ceremonial air to the whole process of doing a badge
flight (much like holy water, incense and candles, oops, my Catholic
 upbringing coming through...)

Try and tell that to the kids of today. They would never believe you...

 Back to normal transmissions...

The mind boggles at how those American cowboys can be happy with
beacons that don't meet AS/NZ standards and are half the price.

I also must wonder why, when each beacon has a discrete code, there
is any country coding at all.

I've heard rumours that there are such things as databases which can
run on PC's and a marvellous thing called the Internet. Allegedly you
could enter the discrete code and find out who owns it anywhere in the
world.

I also advised that our knowledge of the number of beacons being
bought with the number being registered shows an approximate 25%
shortfall (not being registered). This is supported by
incidents/activations of late where beacons have not been registered
and therefore emergency contact details or likely targets/persons
involved are not known to the RCC and therefore potentially delaying
 a SAR response.
Recently it has also come to our attention that in various aviation
online forums, discussions are being held about buying overseas
beacons on line because they are cheaper than buying a beacon in
Australia. Additionally there have been enquiries of Australian
Agents to recode beacons bought online from overseas. The agents are
refusing to do this. Additionally these beacons do not meet the
AS/NZ standard which is also a requirement of CAR252a.
I request CASA undertake a post transition education project to
 encourage pilots and owners to:
 1. Register their beacon. If it is an EPIRB or PLB then you can note
an aircraft registration against the beacon. Beacons can be
 registered on line for free.
 2. Educate/audit the industry to comply with CAR252a and switch to a
 406 beacon.
 3. Educate the industry that an overseas beacon does not conform
with AS/NZ standard, is not country coded to Australia and cannot be
 recoded in Australia once bought.

  Hi to all,

Some history re Romeo Victor appeared in Vintage Gliding Australia's Vintage
Times #115 and also in the Vintage Gliding Corner section of GFA's Soaring
Australia magazine this month.

Unfortunately it incorrectly referred to Ian Patching as being the pilot of a
Mucha that flew from Benalla to Narromine on 11-Jan-65.

Of course it wasn't Ian Patching it was Ian Aspland in the Mucha and the
error was my fault.

The article should have read .

On 11-Jan-65, Max Howland took a 1200' winch-launch in Romeo Victor from
Benalla VIC at 1130 and landed in Narromine NSW some 5 hours and 15 minutes
later with 4000' to spare to achieve his second Diamond Distance. On that day
Ian Aspland also made it to Narromine in a Mucha while Maurie Bradney landed at
Dubbo.

Ian Patching had pointed out my error in May'09 and it had been corrected on
the Caboolture Gliding Club web site. However I had overlooked advising Dave
Goldsmith who had already downloaded the information for the abovementioned
articles.

Ian Patching was only around 9 years of age at the time!

Ross, I like to read all this stuff so that people can tell us what we should
be thinking, and how to behave on mail lists. I find it refreshing to have
people drawing attention to what is (and is not) appropriate to say. The fact
that I personally need this guidance is a sad reflection on Miss Dunn, who
clearly failed to inculcate an appropriate demeanour in me way back when I was
I grade three. It is indeed a privilege to have access to the wisdom of those
best able to guide us on our behaviour. I'm not sure by what authority they
act, but Miss Dunn pointed out, we should all listen to those who know better.

My understanding is that by convention, we have authority to slag -

a.. Blaniks
b.. GFA
c.. Any make of glider
d.. New gliders
e.. Old gliders
f.. CASA
g.. All CD's
h.. Scorers
i.. NCC
j.. Computers
k.. Contest pilots
l.. Non contest pilots

This non exhaustive list therefore gives us heads of power to cover a wide
range of ground.

And now, we get to add 'what to talk about' to the list - very helpful in
expanding the scope of discussion. J

 HA

Here are a couple more videos for vintage buffs. For those folk who
could not get the sound out of the last ones, there is no sound. They
were shot 16mm MOS. This is a technical term from film days and means
Mit out sound. Otto Preminger I think.

The previous videos had video in DV format, compressed using H.264
and audio in AAC format. I don't know what that means, but Quicktime
ought to sort it out, or use VLC as others suggest.

Anyway. These are mainly flex wings. And before you'all turn off,
it is interesting to compare these with the other two sets of videos,
Zulu Romeo and the Vintage stuff.

These videos are almost contemporary with Zulu Romeo I think. ZR was
1994? And these are 1976-7. Most of the pilots at Waikerie would have
had hundreds or thousands of hours of experience, while few of the HG
pilots here would have had more than 50.

The level of development and sophistication of the gliders in the HG
video is about the same as the ones in the Vintage sailplane video.
You can easily compare a standard Rogallo with a Zogling primary, and
in this video, the first of the radical hybrid gliders were starting
 to appear.

In those days you had to fly in a near gale to stay up which in these
penetrationally challenged gliders meant sometimes you went over the
 back.

Some things, like the method of flying two-up are quite strange to
people now, but that was the accepted way of doing it then.

Many of these people are still flying hang gliders or have moved or
 are moving to plastic gliders.

Thanks for Zulu Romeo!

I have uploaded a Quicktime movie on vintage gliding. It is a series
of old Movietone and Pathe clips, some with a watermark, showing
sailplanes in the '30s at places like Dunstable, Brooklands,
Wasserkuppe, Italy, France and even at what appears to be Stanwell
Park. Launches are by bungy, winch and aerotow.

In the Stanwell sequence, the voice over (or observation is it is
called in the clip) claims the glider top lands on a horse. Well it
nearly does. When the glider does a 360º turn close to the hill, the
sink rate makes a standard Rogallo look impressive. Certainly top
landing a sailplane at Stanwell would take a bit of nerve.

It takes my breath away to see some of the beautiful gull wing planes
of the era almost scraping a wing tip on a ridge. And I wonder what
would happen now if someone tried to fly one of Patch's group's
sailplanes in the same way!

http://www.4shared.com/file/111471806/df3eb297/Vintage_Gliding_Video.html

I would appreciate any feedback on the Stanwell sequence from people
with more knowledge than me.

The clips were supplied by Angelo Crapanzano from Italy.
