2013-02-26 Thread Luke Dodd
I have been trialling the shorai and can support Johns assessement . Shorai
rate their capacities on a cold cranking equivalent, its is entirely misleading
if you are looking for a battery to supply a steady current over a long period
of time. Their 14 ah will not supply 14ah for 1 hour or 1 ah for 14 hours. I
have used their 7ah rated cells and its equivalent capacity compared to SLA or
Nimh is more like that of a 2 ah cell.

Also they are destroyed by deep discharge.

Hi David,

The link you provide is to exactly the same model of Shorai battery I have been
evaluating. The load tests I have done give it an actual capacity of 4 A/H
(far from the stated capacity of 14 A/H).

I have attached an image of the results for your info, for comparison the
results on one of our clubs existing (used) lead acid glider batteries is also
included.
This clearly demonstrates the ability of the Lithium battery to provide an
almost constant voltage across its complete discharge period whereas the lead
acid battery voltage continually drops to a point where some of our
instrumentation and particularly the radio in transmit mode may fail about
halfway through discharge.

If you note the Shorai literature states an equivalent A/H rating to that of a
14 A/H lead acid battery not an actual A/H rating. This is misleading and I
think a bit of sales spin! The comparison I think is based on the Cold Cranking
capacity of the battery, ie. the ability to delivery large currents to a
starter motor bearing in mind these batteries are designed to replace wet lead
acid motorcycle batteries.

The bottom line is that the 14 A/H Shorai battery will not deliver 1 amp
continuously for 14 hours, well certainly not the one I tested!!

From a safety point of view this is much better than what the Boeing

However, I would never put a battery like that in a glider unless it is

For clarification the engine was a turbo, and the pilot's death was
unrelated.
The engine had 2.8 hours on it before it failed, but Schempp apparently
didn't want to know, and neither did Solo, so we have a situation where his
poor widow, who knows nothing about gliding, and speaks no German, is trying
to sort out the mess.
(Apologies to Schleicher and their agent - a case of brain fade :))

following procedures, (and an engineer to boot)
just poor quality control of the engine
manufacturer (Solo). Not the fault of Schleicher
at all. Now his widow has a $50,000 boat anchor.

Derek,

So this was the Duo and not the fault of Schempp
(not Schleicher?). Was there a fatal accident
with it or did the owner die of some other cause?

For those who are new:

Until about 1996 most self launchers used Rotax 2
strokes of one model or another. Generally these
were pretty satisfactory and the preventative
maintenance required became known and they gave
pretty good service. From talking to some of our
Toowoomba EAA members who operate essentially the
same engines in ultralights, the circumstances
that lead to unscheduled rapid disassembly of the
engine are not present in normal motorglider self launch ops.

About 1996 or so (could be a year or two later)
Rotax couldn't get the glider manufacturers to
commit to enough engines to be worth the bother
so they stopped making CERTIFIED two strokes for
motorgliders while continuing to
manufacture uncertified two strokes that were
essentially identical to the motorglider engines
and both certified and uncertified versions of
the 4 stroke 912 and 912S and 914.(the
uncertified 4 strokes and 2 strokes) can only be
used in ultralights and experimentals and carry a
price tag a few thousand dollars lower than that
of the same engine with certification paperwork -
now unavailable for the 2 strokes).

As gliders are certified aircraft, Rotax 2
strokes could no longer be used in self launchers
so the manufacturers were forced to look for
alternative engines which they eventually found
(Solo and the Norton derived rotary in the
Schleicher self launchers which had already been
in development). I doubt that anyone could
seriously claim that the self launch world is
better off now than when Rotaxes were near
ubiquitous as the new engines had a learning
curve and it appears we're still learning.

The pity of this is that it is a simple
bureaucratic paperwork issue that prevents the
use of a satisfactory, proven, still in
production engine in self launchers. Remember
this when somebody extolls the virtues of
certification for gliders. The truth is that,
by modern mass production standards, the entire
aviation industry nowadays makes prototypes in
pre production size batches. Boeing and Airbus
are trying to do something about this by
standardising aircraft specifications instead of
allowing airlines lots of options.

For sports aircraft formal certification is nonsense.

Recently the Australian Army flew 6 Bell Kiowa
(Jet Ranger)helicopters around the western half
of Australia as a training exercise. At one point
the support vehicle carrying the aircraft doors
(they were flying with doors off) rolled and all
the doors it was carrying were U/S. You'd think
that send some more doors from the aircraft at
Oakey would work. (the weather turned cold)
Nope. The doors are all individual fits. Try that on your Honda.

On the patents issue, I read in New Scientist that if a patent is applied
for, and the invention is of sig government interest, they can effectively
refuse to grant the patent. Also prevent you marketing the product, and
throw you in jail if you if you publicise the invention. They effectively
steal your invention, also offer no compensation. This may apply only to the
US but it was an alarming article.

I feel that you are not only unfair to me but also to the three pilots

Before I acknowledged the pilots (and promptly congratulated them on this

Therefore, any sarcastic comments (such as the one in the first line of your

posting) are totally out of place!!!

Your second line is an insult to other competing top pilots. Butch, for

competed in the same comp but placed fourth with a gap of around 10% to

the winner and approx. 6% to third place.

Sorry, you posting was so outrageous that I could not help myself but put

Hi Simon

I can see that you are trying to spice up this newsgroup. Good try -
good on you!!!

In all seriousness, Simon, having three ASG 29 in the comp and having
all three pilots

on the podium is by no means an isolated case. It has happened at
various Nationals

in Europe and America and is one of many reasons why the ASG 29 is
widely regarded

as the top ship in 18m class these days.

Especially in countries like Australia its spectacular performance in
high speed cruise

makes the glider attractive. Not even the very best of today's open
class ships can stay

with it and it doesn't seem to matter whether the aircraft has
developed spar bumps or

not.

But don't take my word for it and talk to Butch. He has just placed his
second order

for an ASG 29(E) – number sixteen (16) in my sales territory.

On another matter, are you coming to the Waikerie coaching week in
January?

Your confirmation would be appreciated!

Kind regards

Re: [Aus-soaring] Controversial maybe? FLARM

2007-01-13 Thread Luke Dodd
I had a very close shave at the QLD comps last year. I was visually
focussing on the flarm alerts by the two OS pilots flying with me, then in
an instant a loud Flarm alert, I looked forward as another pilot screamed
past - head
on, closure must have been 200kts. I would guess the miss was 30 metres!!! I
would have had no chance to avoid.

Perhaps I confused this new threat, assuming it was one of the pilots flying
with me getting closer.

On occassions Flarm has alerted me to risks sooner than I was able to detect
visually, but its not a panacea

 Tim,

I agree with most of what you are saying, and find that it is very rare to
have the Flarm alert me of a threat that I didn't already recognise.
However, as I have related previously there was one instance a couple of
years ago that led to a near miss head-on between myself and Tony Tabart
that a Flarm would have averted way before it happened. Both in cruise,
the
closing speed was huge, and but for Tony seeing my glider at about 200m
distance the result would have been really untidy. This is not the only
time
 I have been in such a situation - I hope it doesn't mean I am a dangerous
pilot, simply that my hours in a competition environment raise the
possibility of my getting involved. I am constantly aware of it, and have
had too many reminders that any one of us can be involved. The Flarm only
has to save one life and it is worth all the time and effort.

The concern about Flarm being used to search for other gliders for
competitive advantage is, I believe, a load of horsepooh. Anyone with a
sound pair of eyes will see other gliders climbing well if they are within
useful range anyway. After a short period of time I have learnt to filter
out the Christmas tree effect, and I think this problem is being sorted
with better software quite rapidly anyway.

 Cheers, Bruce.

My Flarm is an excellent backup logger, and and also gives a very fair
impersonation of a Christmas tree at times. For the first of these
alone it is worth the money; for the second I am either amused or
  annoyed depending on the circumstances.

It has yet to tell me anything I didn't already know, in a collision
threat sense. If and when it does, I will be grateful for the
information, but I'm not expecting that to happen any time soon.

What it HAS told me several times, is the presence of thermalling
gliders some distance away to the side and either above or below, and
has therefore found me a couple of useful climbs that I would otherwise
have missed. Perhaps that is why some pilots want Flarm to be
mandatory, and why rumour has it that certain pilots turn them off :)

I strongly suspect, as your experience has shown, that FLARM in a busy

thermal offers nothing as it is going off and therefore ignored.
Sorry - but that is not my experience flying with FLARM in three comps
now and at a busy club (100% FLARM both club and private). The most
recent update to the software seems to have toned down on the 'false
positives' from what I understand, but even when this was occurring all
the time (at the first FLARM comp at Lk Keepit in 2005), it was still
useful as it did let you see if there was anyone in your blind spots.
With the newer (but not the latest) software at the FAI multi-class
comps at Kingaroy, the in thermal problem was significantly reduced and
its utility improved as a result. I found that if the warning horn
sounded it was a good idea to look at where the FLARM was pointing as
generally there was an emerging threat (the horn sounds if there is a
predicted collision in the next 18secs).

With the latest software, there is again an improvement in the thermal
handling (as I understand it, but I haven't had a chance to be in a
gaggle yet to test it). The new software also turn OFF all the other
lights when the horn sounds so that it is really clear where the threat
is in relation to your glider.

 Hi Nigel,

I have just imported a near new Stemme S10-VT in which I have a (deep
 breath, this is a mouthful):

 LX 7007 IGC Pro FLARM

i.e. an LX7007 gliding computer with IGC logger and an integrated
 FLARM unit.

I've fired it up, its happily booting, GPS running, and indicating
 that its transmitting happily.

The question is - are all FLARMs globally on the same frequency -
i.e. will this unit actually work properly with the ones you sell in
 Australia?

Sure hope so, but I obviously would love to know for sure; As I've
never seen a distinction in any description of these units, I hope
they work - and in safety terms, for the sake of people bringing non-
Australian gliders into Australian airspace (and vice versa) I
 *really* hope so :)

 Thanks!

Honestly, that story isn't sad and lonely, its mildly frightening.

In particular, it highlights that you can mandate at a comp that
everyone has a FLARM unit, but you (obviously) can't mandate that
they all work - i.e. we've all still got to remember these things
(like ourselves) are fallible, and fly accordingly.

I am not surprised. Go into any toy store and the section for plastic model

Stuart (and others who might be interested).

I guess the coping strategies used by we colour blind people use
depend
on the degree of colour blindness. I can only speak from my own
experiences.

I don't recall the exact name of my affliction, but mine is realtively
mild. Red and green are the usual problem colours. I have problems
generally
with the finer shades of red and green. I actually had no idea I had a
problem until about 2nd of 3rd year high school when a guy came around
doing
vocational guidance testing and I had all sorts of problems with the
Ishahara (?)Test - the book where the pages have numbers made up of
coloured dots. It was then I realised why I sometimes said something was
light green when it was light grey, or dark brown instead of dark red. I
do,
though, still see most variations of red and green as somthing that I
identify as red and green, but clearly I don't see it the same as you
normal people do, either as colour or as intensity.

If you are wearing a red or green shirt I know you are. And I love red
cars.
I see red or green traffic signals - if you turned the lamp set upside
down
I would know it so I don't go by the top and bottom light to decide if
I
 go through the intersection!

In the garden I'll see a red rose but I have to look for it - it doesn't
jump out at me the way a yellow or white one does.

In terms of coping strategies, the conscious ones at least are pretty
simple. If I play golf I will never use a red tee because it will be a
single use job! I'll never find it again - so I use yellow or white.

If I'm choosing clothes or anything to do with colours (and I hate
shopping
with a passion) I seek the advice of my very colour wise wife.

The biggest major coping strategy though was to have to forget my lifelong
ambition to be an airline pilot. The first strategy then was a change of
career and I became a civil engineer. When my first posting with the
(then)
DMR in NSW took me to Wentworth, and the resident works engineer turned
out
to the president of the Sunraysia Gliding Club, the second major strategy
was to take him up on his invitation to go gliding, so flying became my
recreation. And, in one of those life-numbers that you don't want to work
on
too often, I see from my logbook that on 18th December it will be 40 years
since that day that changed my life for the better!

Other than that, it's not something I really think about, nor am overtly
conscious of most of the time. As I sit here looking out my window across
the lovely green garden into the clear blue sky it all looks great -
 whatever colour it really is!

 Mark,
Back in the 60's and 70's you could get a CPL while colour blind, you
just could not hold any form of instrument rating including the Class 4,
now

made
it a requirement of a CPL to hold a Class 4 instrument rating. However you
could not hold a CPL or higher if you had any form of vision correction

Not being colour blind I do not understand the coping strategies colour

today. It has an LX-7000 vario system. What did not come with the
glider is the download cable. Does any kind person out there have such a
cable. It has a small (8 to 10mm or thereabouts) 5 pin (Binder female)
plug at one end with a SUBD9 female at the other. Any assistance would
  be much appreciated.

Although not directly related to EW, I have found the Belkin USB-Serial
converter from Harvey Norman has work very well for all Colibri's and is
extremely easy to install.

I have a Dolphin one from Dick Smiths that communicates with WinXP home,
Compaq 700, a Colibri and
SeeYou but did not get round to checking that it works 100% as I ran out
of time but will be testing
it again this week if the strip at DDSC becomes flyable after a huge storm
last night leaving the
 Clubhouse blacked out still.

Also, if you do get it, comes with a tiny CDom which I threw away as it
was in the plastic packet.
No mention on the packaging about having a CDrom with the drivers. I
thought it was plug and pray.

Yes, but I borrowed it, and can't remember who from or the make/model.

I have 3, 2 don't work at all, although are fine with a Garmin, the 3rd
works to change the date and declaration, but won't download a trace.

EW will sell you one that they say they have tested. It might be worth
calling them to get the details.

I'd endorse Ian's comments re Gary Brasher's
organisation. We took delivery of a DG303 in December from the AMS Flight
factory in Slovenia, Gary was most helpful in organising all aspects of the
shipment which went of with no problems (at least from our
perspective).

I
actually discussed with Gary the possibility of us picking the glider and
trailer up from their yard at Port Botany and towing it away rather than
using a side loader to deliver the container to Tom Gilbert at Camden (Aust
agent), that wouldn't have been a problem with Gary, but the logistics of
doing it from Canberra made it a bit clumsy so we went with the side loader
bit.

Make very sure you have an import permit for the
trailer, as it is classed as a "vehicle" and if you don't have the right
documentation before it lands in Australia it becomes a bureaucratic
nightmare getting it registered. Technically, if it arrives without the
right import documentation being in your hands prior to it docking, you
could be faced with re-exporting or destroying the
trailer

Depending on your state there may be some local
peculiarities to negotiate as the long trailer doesn't sit comfortably in
any of the "standard" categories of vehicle.

There are lots of "additional" costs apart from the
actual shipping (cusoms, quarantine etc etc etc) so make sure you have a
handle on those.

Happy to corespond direct if you need any specific
detail.

Hi All,

This year in Queensland there
are 3 major comps running, Chinchilla Easter comps ( sports class single and
2 seater ) , Kingaroy State comps and the Dalby Nationals. Already
accommodation outside these airfieldsis filling fast so if you are
thinking of coming you might want to consider checking into
availability.

Cheers

P.S Both Kingaroy and
Chinchilla have onsite camping available, even limited bunkhouse numbers at
Kingaroy as well

  Subject: Re: [Aus-soaring] Rego
  Stickers
I used to own a sign shop. this is what we gave to our
customers who wanted to di it themselves..
  APPLICATION OF VINYL
  SIGNAGEWhat
have you Got ?. Your job has
been supplied as three layers, the top layer is kind of an opaque whitish
paper, this is the application paper or transfer tape. Beneath this layer is
the vinyl graphic or text and underneath the vinyl is the carrier
  paper.

  Application
Paper. After vinyl is cut and
weeded, application paper – also called transfer tape is usually applied over
the completed graphics or lettering. This application paper serves many
purposes, first it protects the surface of the vinyl from damage during
application and it also maintains the proper spacing or layout of the job
  during application.

  Surface
  Preparation. Basically its
common sense….. The surface must be clean and free from dirt, dust, grease
etc… we find the best cleaning agent to be Metholated
Sprits. Before installing the graphics spray or wipe Metho over the job and
dry off by rubbing with a clean cloth, on glass a piece of newspaper is
  also recommended.

  Application
  Temperature. Vinyl is best
applied between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius, if for example the vinyl is being
applied to a car, cool the car with running water or park out of the sun to
  allow the vehicle to cool.

  Plan Your
  Installation. Carefully study
the installation area, hold the job against where it is being applied and
visualise exactly where it is going, it may help to draw some guidelines or
use some tape as markers to assist with lining up your job once the carrier
  layer is removed.
Application of the Graphic. Now the hard part….. Remove the carrier paper
from the job, the easiest way is to lay the graphic upside down and carefully
pull the carrier paper off, this will leave you with the vinyl graphic
attached to the transfer tape, please be careful because now the graphic will
stick to anything it touches. There are two methods of applying vinyl, wet and
dry, we recommend dry application for small jobs only, wet application is our
preferred method. Using a small sprayer or water mister, spray the back of the
vinyl with a mixture of water and say one teaspoon of detergent to half a
litre of water mixture, this will allow the vinyl to be repositioned a couple
of times before it is permanently placed, when your satisfied with the
position, use a squeegee or credit card to work the graphic to the surface
with reasonable pressure, this method expels the excess water and promotes a
good clean bond. After say one hour remove the transfer tape by wetting it
with water, allow about two minutes to soften the adhesives in the transfer
tape and then carefully pull the tape off the graphic.
You’ve done it! You should now be left with a nice graphic on
your job, if there are any bubbles in the vinyl use a pin to break the vinyl
surface and expel the water caught beneath. Your graphic should last several
years in most environments if the surface has been properly prepared before
  the vinyl application…. Well done.

  Application squeegees
are available for purchase at $10.00 each

  Any questions please
give me a call on 07 5568 7770. Thanks Michael

 My 2cents worth

a revenue raising exercise on the part of PA.
I am peeved because I just spent a large amount of money on
reconditioning my PA chute a short time ago and PA took my money
with no mention of this. I now have a chute in perfect condition that
will
be US in a short time. I know what the experts will say, I.E. This is a
liability issue. Not True! PA could have just as easily issued a AD
requiring life extension on the basis of inspection. This passes any
legal liability onto the inspector. Anyway enough of my bleating, I will
vote with my wallet and buy a National from Mike Borgelt.

Yes I got knocked back on a chute (the German girl involved in local
school phoned up PA to check!!) pack because of this new AD from Aug
and am surprised there has not been more publicity of same as it could
well involve a large number chutes in Oz in Gliding. Leaving the chute

Ken,
I found out today that Parachutes Australia have issued a Service
Bulletin (No.PA SB9502 Rev 2) which lifes their containers,harness
and canopies for the types listed, at 20yrs. The list includes most
types which we normally use in gliders, including the slimpacks and
thinbacks. If the equipment has exceeded that time, it is to be
taken out of service. We have 8 which are suddenly of no use, and I
suspect many other clubs are in a similar situation.

I don't recall seeing any advice on this matter and note that the
bulletin distribution did not include GFA, although I was told
someone at GFA officewas informed.

As there is a requirement to have a serviceable parachute for comps,
this may affect some entrants to this years events. Forwarded for
your information. Regards Glenn Mclean

Re: [aus-soaring] Garmin GPSMAP 76S

2003-06-23 Thread Luke Dodd
I sell a GPS mouse for $295, with a compaq ipaq connector. It takes 12V
input which powers GPS engine and compaq. Unit is self-contained with
integral antenna. Very neat GPS datasource.

Compaq can run a multitude of programs from winpilot, to flywithCE etc,
providing not only navigation functions but also final glide etc.

In this price range a real consideration is a low cost gps driving an HP
iPaq 3950 with WinPilot www.winpilot.com (or one of the 'free'
alternative) gliding programs. You can then further add Melways or
Sydways for use in your car, and use OziExplorer with your own scanned
 maps , etc, etc.

Re: [aus-soaring] Comparison of EW vs Colibri vs VolksLogger?

2003-06-03 Thread Luke Dodd

- Original Message -
From: Mike Borgelt [EMAIL PROTECTED]
In my opinion the main difference is the built in antenna on the
Volkslogger and the form factor that is designed for mounting on the old
camera mount on the canopy rail. Cambridge loggers have these features too
 at greater price.

A recent addition to the Colibri model range is an integral antenna fitted
to the case. A fact oviously not noticed after my expensive back page advert
recently in AG.

One feature I didn't like with the Volkslogger is that it deletes flight
files from the logger once downloaded to a PC.

Is this still the case Mike?

Retaining flight files in the logger after download has some benefits, eg at
comps. I can download my logger with the flight file once retrieved from the
scorer. Alternatively I download my Colibri onto my Compaq Ipac when I am
tying down before taking the logger to the scorer. Also if I download my
Colibri onto the Clubs PC, the flight is still in the logger when I get
home. I delete flights from my logger when I wish.

The keyboard size makes operation of the Colibri easier in-flight. But I
don't want to get into an argument between dealers, which is why I have kept
out of this discussion so far.

Each logger on the market presents a blend of features, strengths, relative
weaknesses (they all work in producing IGC files), reliability and pricing
structure.

Re: [aus-soaring] Canopy cleaning

2002-10-27 Thread Luke Dodd

A wise and meticulous gliding friend of mine,
advised washing your canopy with a very high quality(soft) chamois, water plus a
small amount of fabric softener to act as an anti-static agent to stop the dust
clinging?

I am repeating this message as it doesn't seem
to have got to the lists ths first time.

On the subject of cleaning of
canopies.

Mybelief is that anything with ammonia
such as Windex is taboo for perspex (or clear acrylic). As there are
some differing opinions within our club can anyone point me towards an
authorative document that explains why ammonia products should not be used
on perspex, or I'm happy to be corrected.

My understanding is thatammonia leaches
the hydrocarbon binders and cause fine crazing which appears to the user as
a milky appearance. I need to resolve this to people new to our club
as they are getting mixed messages.

Re: [aus-soaring] DOS

2002-06-13 Thread Luke Dodd

For those who use a palmtop/handheld PC and run Microsoft activesynch
will be annoyed the way the program 'hogs' the serial port, making it unavailable
for other programs. This occurs even when the program is closed. You have
to actually disable the serial port selected in activesynch "Connection
Settings" before you get your port back.

Another consideration when upgrading PC hardware, alot of new PC's dont
have a serial port (RS232).

I realise this is not a computer forum, but does anyone know how to stop
Win XP writing to the hard disk , often for 60seconds for no apparaent reason,
rendering the PC unresponsive until finished?

PS

 For Colibri/LX20 owners;

LX explorer(freeware) runs fine under XP, this program provides all the
functions of LXFAI with improvements.

As each new version of Windows is released
there seems to be less support for DOS programs. One of the main issues
I have found is that the serial ports get taken over by Windows which means
that when you go to transfer data from the logger under DOS you can get
all kinds of conflicts happening.

I have found the best solution to this
is software that allows you to select an operating system when you boot.

I use Vcom System Commander. This allows
you to have several operating systems installed on the same boot drive
ie. different versions of Windows, linix, OS2 and of course DOS (multiple
versions if you like!) It also allows you to repartition you hard disk
and set up the operating systems on other partitions (a bit like Partition
Magic).

When you boot up you are presented with
a menu of all the different systems you have installed.

All in all a good solution to the problem

It was only recently that I became aware that Microsoft
Windows XP will not work with DOS. I dont know how this will affect those
flight recorders that use a DOS system. Think about it folks before you
upgrade your computers! Ron Baker.
