That's certainly something we are trying to get away from - us and them.

There's a gradient of abilities and goals for people when it comes
to Backstage.

And real life?

For example, there are people who want to put relevant news on the
side panel of there site and some people who just want to read the
latest news in Chinese on there Blackberry. You could say the first
one is more easy than the second one but does it really matter? From
our point of view, they are both looking to use BBC content in a way
we may not have considered. Who knows, a prototype which takes
Chinese feeds and coverts them to a format which is easily
digestible on Blackberry might hit a large audience which we never
knew existed before.

That's the joy of backstage :)

2006-10-11 Thread Neil Roberts
How about some sort of matching service between people with the ideas and the people with a knowhow to implement them. You could for example open up the ideas section to more main stream sections of the bbc audience a kind of 'tell us what you want suggestion service'. Then based on that you put the best ideas to a public online vote. (giving some indication of demand)
The final stage would be to make them happen by getting teams of techies involved (building a team based on the required skills).I know backstage does much of this already but it think the concept of voting for ideas and putting togther teams to build them would be a good addition.

Perhaps there should be a 'tech' and 'no-tech' version of the site.

The 'tech' version could contain all the raw feeds, blogs,
documentation, and alpha version of the software

The 'nontech' version could contain working betas and somewhere for
non-technical people to feedback on them, and also a 'suggestions box'
for non-technical people to put forward their wants.

I realise that this is asking a lot put some kind of overall API
documentation style would be good. There is a lot of variation between
the documentation e.g.

I think the latter is heading in the right direction.

Some people love mailing lists and some love forums. Peoples reasons are many
and varied but I have seen a few really good implementations that use both and
tie them together. With a good implementation this works REALLY well, you can
have two people talking on a thread, one on mail and one of forum and neither
realise.

It's certainly better than having both a list and forums separately and the same
issues discussed on both!

Actually that's a really good point... One of the things we're going to
spend time on is the front page... Taking in issues such as these... Out
of interest... How would you like to consume the site... Mobile / www /
offline downloads?

Matthew,

I'd like the site to be accessible, and particularly to people who know
nothing of it's purpose.
that means clear introduction with purpose and more all in plain English

cheers

Wouldn't these two be best consolidated into one area. You could
always tag certain posts as _news_ or similar and have them appear
more prominently?

* Documentation

Any chance this could be wiki based maybe? or even incorporate some
clever re-directory magic

All useful, relevant microformats as well please (I have a stick, sorry!)

I liked the idea of it being more open to people not nessesarily
wanting to be involved in the development, more just the consumption
of the output. Not sure if this is part of the grander plan but would
be nice to see - and take some design work in particularly on the home
page to get across to those people succinctly.

Anyway, just my tuppence.

Re: [backstage] New backstage.bbc.co.uk website

2006-10-04 Thread Duncan Barclay

Generally sounds good. I agree with
Gareth that a wiki would be nice for documentation, especially as it
would allow all of us to contribute. Obviously you would have to
consider how to stop wiki spam though, which could be a major problem.

You might also want an area to submit suggestions for new feeds or
APIs, and I have to say I also quite like the ideas section on the old
website, but it seems to have got too mixed up between ideas of things
you can do with the current feeds/APIs and ideas for new feeds or
APIs. Splitting those up but keeping both would be quite nice.

If you are planning to have some Backstage events, please make sure
they aren't all in London. I don't want to have to travel all the way
from Bath for all of them :P

Nice to see Backstage getting back on it's feet.

Duncan

In deed, as stated before, I think it should be accessible to common people
that do not have any programming skills and that may be able to mashup the
feeds using some type of GUI. A sort of ning.com for dummies.
