I can't find the article I read when I fixed it, but Nintendo mention
that channels 1 and 11 are good as they don't overlap with other
channel. There's a bunch of other stuff from them on this page as well:

Thanks for that, the wifi on my wii now speeds along - can watch iPlayer no
problem!

Great to know it works well now. It's often the case that changing a setting
or two will help many problems, saves buying extra hardware too.

Out of interest, is there a feature on the Wii to connect up an external
wifi aerial anywhere? I saw they had capability for the old gamecube
controllers, nice touch that.

No, there's no way to connect an external aerial.

The Wii also takes the Gamecube memory cartridges (it can't store Gamecube saved games on
its internal memory), and is 100% backwards compatible (unless the GC game used some
peripheral like the Gameboy Player).

Re: [backstage] An alternative iPlayer interface for the Wii

2008-06-08 Thread Matt Barber
You could use it on the PC and compare signal strength before/after
relocating the access point, but yeh I overlooked the fact that moving the
Wii wouldn't show up on a PC running it...
Also, have you a xbox 360 nearby? The wireless controller antenna on it
spews out loads of 2.4GHz everywhere and can damage a wifi connection, even
when it's off but plugged in.

That's most likely down to the signal strength of the relatively cheap
wireless chip inside the Wii. The distance between the console and the
wireless access point will really make a difference to how well the iPlayer
streams.

I also had a lot of success in getting my Wii to be reliable by playing
around with which wireless channel was being used. It sounded unlikely to
me but seems to have worked. There's a load of pages out on the web about
tweaking the settings to get them to work nicely.

I've seen that changing the channel to a few down the line helps, so if it's
on 1 or 3, try 6 or 9/vice versa.
If you want to try this also you can download NetStumbler [1] and look at
the graph, then you can change your settings and compare results in
different parts of your house based on signal strength. There's also a sound
you can activate so you don't have to be near your PC to see if the strength
has increased or not. If you need to know how to set that up give me a
shout.

Other tips are to disable encryption (not really recommended), that uses
overhead... rotate the Wii so the antenna changes orientation, that sort of
thing I guess.

Re: [backstage] An alternative iPlayer interface for the Wii

2008-06-03 Thread James Cridland
Possibly worth mentioning that the reason why iPlayer (and
RadioPlayer) are not great on other platforms is that both product
infrastructures currently force us to produce static pages rather than
sensibly database-derived products.

iPlayer v2.0 is less than a month away; the backend redesign means
dynamically-generated niceness for Wii, iPhone, and other platforms
will be much easier.

I wonder how difficult it would be to stream to that. It supports

not as efficient as the Wii.

If they opened a web browser up on it, then that would be something.

Re: [backstage] An alternative iPlayer interface for the Wii

2008-05-30 Thread Chris Johnson
Thanks for the feedback. With regards to your suggestions:

1) This is something I'm working on. Unfortunately to find out which
programs are not available I'd have to query them all individually, which is
something I'd rather not do. I was planning though to cache the request when
the user finds something unavailable, then automatically marking it as such
on the program list afterwards.

Example: You would click a program on the list, find it wasn't available and
from then on that would be automatically reflected in the program list for
everyone else.

2) Clicking on the WiiPlayer logo on the top left should take you back to
the main menu.

Thanks,
Chris

That's really rather good - looks great and the interface works rather

 Two suggestions though:
 1) Letting people know from the program lists if the program is available
for the wii iplayer or not. I clicked through loads of programs before I
found one that actually worked - it'd be good to know that from the program
list page before you click through.

 2) There's no way of navigating straight back to the main page from each of
the program list pages that I saw - I clicked your back arrow until I went
back through all the list pages and then to the front page. It'd be good to
have a 'jump to home page' link somewhere.

Other than those two minor niggles, it seems rather good. I'll keep testing
it because it makes using the iplayer quite nice on my wii now.
