I have been using bacula and AVG for over 2 years with no problems, this
morning during a daily virus scan AVG found this downloader.Zlob.MCQ in
the winbacula-2.0.3. exe install file that I still had in mydocuments.
My guess is that this means AVG has added something to there definitions
that considers this a threat.

Hi,

 I have no Idea what might have happened but I can't get the bacula-dir
 to start. I have been running bacula for about 6 months now and recently
 upgraded my dir and fd's to 2.01 and all was working fine. Yesterday I
 reloaded my wife's computer and went to bacula to restore her document
 folder, upon the first try it seemed to work great but didn't find the
 files, well I realized I sent them to the wrong machine, no problem I
 could just copy them from that machine but I wanted to make sure I had
 this restore thing down using it to restore to a fresh installed os. I
 was using ocm webmin to restore and at one point, since I couldn't seem
 to get it working I brought up the wx-console to see what the status was
 and suddenly I got an error saying that the dir was not running and do I
 want to continue. I have not been able to get the dir running since. At
 first it gave me some lines of code to check in the dir.conf file which
 hadn't changed from the last start but weren't mission critical so I
 changed them and expected it to start but now that I have everything set
 to work it still does not start and gives me no errors. This is on a
 centos 4.4 machine, what can I do to force bacula to give me some sort
 of info about why it doesn't start? Oh and the SD and FD on this box
 start it is just the dir that doesn't. Thanks

I'll start sending you some punctuation and line feeds vie mail :-)

What errors exactly do you get when you start the DIR from the shell,
like in '/sbin/bacula-dir -c /etc/bacula/bacula-dir.conf -f'? (Change
the paths to fit your installation!)

That's just it, even starting bacula from the shell I never got any errors.
Even using this './bacula start -d 50' I only received this error which I
assume is normal as I still get it now with bacula running fine 'Starting
the Bacula Director daemon
bacula-dir: dird.c:152 Debug level = 1
09-Feb 19:55 bacula-dir: ERROR TERMINATION at parse_conf.c:847
Config error: expected resource name, got: BACFDCFG
: line 16, col 8 of file bacula
BACFDCFG=/etc/bacula'

Which version of Bacula?

As it says in original message I just upgraded to ver 2.01

What does the configuration file look like?

Not sure what the configuration file looked like but it was obviously the
culprit. I Uninstalled everything and the reinstalled it and after making
the changes necessary to the config files everything worked, if I tried to
use my original dir conf it would stop working again. I never found anything
visibly wrong with my file and ended up copying and pasting all the info in
the new conf file so they looked identical and the new one works fine but
the old one doesn't??? At any rate it is working now but thought I would
reply in case anyone else ever runs up against this, whatever happened,
happened during a restore on a remote computer.

After you supply that information I'm sure we can help.

Arno

[Bacula-users] VSS was not initialized properly.

2006-10-03 Thread Jim Peters

I have 4 windows clients (3 XP pro and 1 server 2003) I use
the same fileset for all of them in which I have Enable VSS=Yes .
this works for 3 of the machines but on 1 (an XP Pro machine) I get this error every
time;

Warning: VSS was not initialized properly. VSS support is
disabled. ERR=The operation completed successfully.

And of course if outlook is running when it gets to my
outlook.pst file it tells me;

Error: Read
error on file C:/Documents and Settings/jim/Local Settings/Application
Data/Microsoft/Outlook/Outlook.pst. ERR=The process cannot access the file
because another process has locked a portion of the file.

I have tried this now on 3 different versions of bacula with
the same results, I am currently running Version: 1.39.22 (08 Septermber 2006) i686-pc-linux-gnu redhat. I
have tried it both with the volume shadow service turned on and off on this
machine but it seems to make no difference, since the other clients dont
have volume shadow service running on them and seem to be fine I have it off
now. This looks like it must be a client problem and not a bacula problem, but
what could it be? This particular machine has office 2003, I use outlook on it
and would like to back up my PST file without shutting down the program. I have
at least 1 other machine running office 2003, but this is the only one I actually
run outlook on.

Has anything
like this happened to anybody else? Does anyone have any idea where to look for
the culprit?

I have run out
of ideas as to what the problem is- any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

[Bacula-users] ERR=Broken pipe

2006-09-25 Thread Jim Peters

Last night my backups all failed,
from the first client to attempt a backup I received this error Fatal error:
c:\cygwin\home\kern\bacula\k\src\win32\filed\../../filed/job.c:1614 Comm error
with SD. bad response to Append Data. ERR=Broken pipe I googled this and
looked through the archives and although I found a lot of hits for this subject
I never saw any solutions. So this is a FOR WHAT ITS WORTH post.

FOR WHAT ITS WORTH:

I tried the backups a couple more times this
morning with the same results. Then I started weeding through the log files and
noticed that the clock on my dir machine was set to the year 2000. I fixed this
and restarted the daemons and my backups are working again, not sure this will
help others fighting this problem because Im sure there are many reasons
to get this error but since it is the solution that worked for me I thought this
worth mentioning, check your hardware clock.

Re: [Bacula-users] Help with DVD storage

2006-09-24 Thread Jim Peters
Actually I found my error, I never formatted the DVD, as it was blank I
assumed I didn't need to. I don't know why I would make such an assumption
since even in windows and on set top boxes the blank media is formatted
first. Anyway I ran this; dd if=/dev/zero bs=1024 count=512 | growisofs -Z
/dev/hdb=/dev/fd/0 and then ran a couple test runs both backing up and
restoring and it worked great. I am unsure how I am going to utilize this in
my backup scheme, currently I have 2 200 gig hard drives set up in a raid1
mirror with software and I am doing a daily rotational backup of 5 windows
clients a linux firewall and the box I have bacula on, maybe I can do a
weekly or monthly on DVD for extra security.

Well, trying to use DVD as a backup medium with Bacula is definitely
something for beta testing currently.

You should try the latest released beta version to start with, follow
the bacula-devel mailing list - also look through the archives as there
is lots of exchange recently regarding DVD writing - and report problems
to the developers mailing list, too.

Apart from this probably rather discouraging advice I get the impression
that DVD writing is slowly becoming usable.

Are you using VSS? Volume Shadow Copy
service is actually designed to make backups of locked files like outlooks
.pst, so it should work with Enable VSS=Yes option in the FileSet config.

[Bacula-users] Help with DVD storage

2006-09-23 Thread Jim Peters

I decided that the box I had bacula installed in was a little
week so I removed the 3 hard drives and stuck them in an old AMD Dual Athlon box
I use for testing and building linux stuff on but has been sitting Idle for a few
months. I love linux, try swapping windows hard drives to different hardware like
this and see the pretty blue screens come up! Anyway this new box also has a
DVD+RW drive so I thought I would experiment with using bacula to write to DVDs
, here is my configuration;

Bacula-sd.conf

#

# A DVD device

#

Device {

 Name =
DVD-RW

 Media Type = DVD

 Archive Device =
/dev/hdb

 LabelMedia =
yes;
# lets Bacula label unlabeled media

 Random Access = Yes;

 AutomaticMount =
no;
# when device opened, read it

 RemovableMedia = yes;

 AlwaysOpen = no;

 MaximumPartSize =
800M;

 Requires Mount = yes;

 Mount Point =
/mnt/dvd;

 Mount Command
= /bin/mount -t iso9660 -o ro %a %m;

 Unmount Command =
/bin/umount %m;

 Spool Directory =
/tmp/backup;

 Write Part Command =
/etc/bacula/dvd-handler %a write %e %v

 Free Space Command =
/etc/bacula/dvd-handler %a free

}

#

And my bacula-dir.conf

Job {

 Name =
BackupHome

 Type =
Backup

 Level =
Full

 Client =
Server-fd

 FileSet =
Home

 Storage =
dvd

 Pool =
Default

 Priority =
10

 Messages = Standard

 WriteBootstrap =
/var/bacula/Server-fd.bsr

 Write Part After Job =
yes

}

Storage {

 Name = dvd

 Address =
192.168.0.4

 SDPort = 9103

 Password =
password

 Device = DVD-RW

 Media Type = DVD

}

If you see anything that should be changed please let me know,
I really have no clue as to what Im doing here but am giving it a shot.

After setting up these files I stuck a brand new +RW disc in
the drive and ran the BackupHome job. It starts the job and never really gives
me any errors and doesnt end the job either all I see is this,

Job started. JobId=32

23-Sep 14:50 Server-dir: Start Backup JobId 32,
Job=BackupHome.2006-09-23_14.50.02

23-Sep 14:50 Server-sd: Please mount Volume
DefaultVolume-0002 on Storage Device DVD-RW (/dev/hdb)
for Job BackupHome.2006-09-23_14.50.02

Am I supposed to manually mount the DVD at this point? I
thought bacula wrote to the device in a raw format and didnt need to be
mounted? And if it does I would think the mount command =
derective would take care of this?

Here is what I see in my message log;

[Bacula-users] using client variable

2006-09-18 Thread Jim Peters

I am trying to figure out how to use Label Format = to label each
daily backup by day of week-client
name-date. The day of week is easy and I'm not having
a problem with the date but I cant seem to get it to work with the
client variable. Here is how I set it up to start with;

Pool {
 Name = MondayPool
 PoolType = Backup
 Recycle = yes
 AutoPrune = yes
 VolumeRetention = 6 days
 LabelFormat = Monday-${client)-${Year}-${Month:p/2/0/r}-${Day:p/2/0/r}
 Maximum Volume Jobs = 2
 }

and upon running the job with this pool assigned I get

17-Sep 14:07 Server-dir: asus2.2006-09-17_14.07.27 Error: Cannot expand _expression_ Monday-${client)-${Year}-${Month:p/2/0/r}-${Day:p/2/0/r}: ERR=incomplete variable specification

If I remove the client variable and just use the day followed by the
date variables it works fine so Im sure I am not using the variable
right but the chapter on this is like trying to read Greek to me. I want to
have different volumes for each client so a monday job from client2 doesnt
overwrite a monday job from client1. Maybe there's an easier way to do this?

thanks

2006-09-16 Thread Jim Peters
George;
Thank you so very much, it is now working like a charm! You don't know how
many hours I have spent going over this stuff, Reinstalling, switching
versions on client and server, searching any forums and or mail lists for
similar problems and coming up empty on a solution. A silly mistake I never
should have made but it is now a lesson well learned! Definitely a case
where to many cooks only sweetens the broth and a second set of eyes makes
all the difference.
Once again THANKS!

See? S is in caps in dir and sd, but _not_ in fd. You
should also enclose it in quotes for good measure. To
sum it up, this directive should be IDENTICAL in all
configuration files. Quoting page 192 of the manual:

Name = name The name of the Director that may
contact this Client. This name must be the same as the
name specified on the Director resource in the
Director's configuration file. This record is
required.

After you're done editing, restart all components on
all boxes (dir, sd, fd), run bconsole and type

status client
status storage

Things should run smooth. Regards,

Georger

 running Bacula  1.38.9

 problems with any of the local daemons on this

 I sure hope someone can find a problem here because
 I think I’ve tried about all I can think of to get
 it to work. I should also mention that I can telnet
 to the windows client on port 9102 and am connecting
 and I have watched it from the windows machine with
 tcpview but it drops the connection when it doesn’t
 authenticate.

 Thanks

[Bacula-users] help with schedules

2006-09-16 Thread Jim Peters

Are there any good tutorials or advice on how to create
different schedules for bacula? What I would like to do is schedule each client
to back up each day (mon-sun) and keep each backup until the next time that day
comes around. (Actually 3 days worth would be sufficient but possibly more
complicated to configure) This way if I have a disaster on Saturday and Fridays
data is corrupt I can still fall back a day and use Thursdays and so on. Is this
feasible with bacula? Or is there a better way to insure against bad data in a
backup? I am open to any suggestions, this is just the way I am used to
rotating manual backups to avoid problems and still limit disk space as much as
possible and seemed to be a good idea to me to continue. Sorry to use this list
for what some might think as trivial questions but I am eager to learn bacula
and implement it on my network, and I have searched on the web on this subject
but havent found anything that seemed to be what I was looking for.

Thanks,

Jim
