Is the euro sign always 0x80 for all available input methods? If so, then I suspect that the charset in the database is the same, and the language settings are just for UI convenience. OTOH, there's is an option in the config options that allow to select the language and the language input method. I hope this helps to make the sync for us non-english users work better, as the sync stops adding the contact data when it finds one of those characters.
