Re: BERNER-L - time to take drastic measures
Always hard to say goodbye to old friends. Thanks to everyone at Prairienet who kept us online all those years. Yahoogroups has its problems, but looks like those of us that use AOL can finally upgrade (geesh, I'm still running 5.0) since we won't have to worry about html posts. Also, the archive search at yahoo is good so you can go back and find posts you may want to read again fairly easily. Thanks Pat and team for your continuing efforts to keep us together. Puppy in Annapolis Pet Store
A friend was able to check out the Annapolis mall pet store. Look at that price! If anyone wants the name of the breeder, e-mail me privately. Carol Lingley Ijamsville, MD Your sources were correct, they had a poor leggy Berner puppy in the pet store. He looked very sad not in the best of health. He definitely had Berner markings, but he had a very awkward looking head some very long legs. They were asking $2395 for him someone had already put a deposit on him. He came from a breeder in Fairview, Missouri.

VetGen vWD Clinic
Here's information on another clinic for DNA testing for vWD. Cost is $41 discounted over individual test kits -- $99 vs $140. Carol Lingley Ijamsville, MD The Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of the Potomac is having a vWD clinic in conjunction with our specialty April 17th-18th. http://www.infodog.com/prm/1118/prm1118.htm The clinic is open from March 25th-April 25th. The deadline for ordering on the RSVP page is April 2nd, however you can send it directly to me by April 25th or give it to me at the specialty. I will be sending the order FedEx to VetGen on April 26th. Make checks payable to PWCCP $99.00 per kit. We need a minimum order of 25 kits in order to get the discounted price. There has been a lot of interest so I don't think this will be a problem. If by chance we don't make the minimum, we will return everyone's money on April 26th. VetGen will send the kit(s) directly to you. You swab your dog and send it back to them. They send you the results. We are getting the discount for ordering a minimum of 25 kits at one time. There is no time limit for when you use the kits. The clinic is open to any breed currently being DNA tested by VetGen for vWD; Bernese Mountain Dog, Doberman Pinscher, Kerry Blue Terrier, Manchester terrier, Papillon, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Poodle, Scottish Terrier and Shetland Sheepdog. Re: MH Questions
In a message dated 3/2/2003 12:45:46 PM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: How many Berners are diagnosed with MH just on a vet's best guess and not confirmed with testing supporting this guess? Good point, Cathy. When Arrow died at 22 months we pursued pathology through Antech, DOD's Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, the University of Wisconsin and UCDavis. Before he died tissue was sent to UPA. The U of WI found histio in his lung tissue, but could not be definite about the eye. UCDavis, the last to receive tissue samples, said the eye was a beautiful specimen of MH. All the other labs could not name the disease. When our 5 1/2 year old Stretch became seriously ill with thrombocyptopenia in the fall, I was convinced he had MH and almost lost hope. Fortunately the vets didn't give up and he has recovered completely. Obviously not MH, but had he died it would have taken a lot of convincing for me to believe it was anything but. In a message dated 1/13/2003 10:11:00 PM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I have a 2 year old BARC rescue dog who has to suck on a pillow to fall asleep. He is about 100 pounds and the bigger the pillow the better. I have tried to figure out why he does this. He was taken away from his mum at about 3 weeks. (!) I've had two from two different litters develop the habit of sucking on their toys and getting that we're in la-la land expression. Both were with their moms and littermates for at least eight weeks, so I don't think it comes from early separation. Maybe it's just a form of thumb sucking that comforts them. Thankfully, a Very Merry Christmas
We have been doubly blessed this Christmas with the presence (presents!) of our Santera Lillehammer, CD who turned nine this Christmas morning, and our 5 1/2 year old Stretch (Caroling's Octave Above). Lille was diagnosed with adeno carcinoma last December and had a second surgery in March for a metastasized tumor. I call her my quintessential Berner, so am not surprised that she has given us the full measure of the Swiss saying. Bonus years will be much appreciated, but we feel ever so lucky to have her with us today. Stretch was very close to leaving us in October with what has turned out to be idiopathic thrombocytopenia. He's made it through some pretty tough times, including a splenectomy, but he is looking great and has his full energy back. He continues on immunosuppressants, but his dose has been halved and his bloodwork is looking great. He is our Miracle Man! To all of you, our best wishes for a Happy Christmas Bernerful New Year. Enjoy the presence of all your dogs! Carol Lingley Ijamsville, MD
Re: Ehrlichiosis
In a message dated 11/29/2002 8:54:26 AM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: I know here in the states there is a new test kit that tests for both Ehrlichiosis Heartworm called SNAP not sure what the accronym stands for. I recently had a very sick Berner boy whose SNAP came back high positive for Lyme when he first entered emergency care. His symptoms were more like Ehrlichiosis, bleeding gums, high liver enzymes, etc. Blood was sent to NCSU for full titers which all came back negative. Took about a week for the results. The doxycycline treatment didn't hurt him, but fortunately the ER vets were thorough and continued to search for the cause of his illness which at best guess at this point is a bacterial infection. In the future I will treat if the SNAP is positive and the dog responds quickly to the doxy, but if I get repeated positives and don't have a symptomatic dog, I may invest in the full titer, and based on the recommendation of the ER vets, NCSU has the most reliable results. Re: Female Incontenence
In a message dated 11/17/2002 5:24:48 PM Eastern Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: We discussed age/spay related incontenence and she prescribed Proin. My understanding that this is the same product (formerly names DES I believe)that was given to pregnant women years ago and whose daughters developed cancer. Proin is Phenylpropanolamine or PPA. It is the drug that was in over the counter cold medicines and diet pills. I believe Dexitrim was one of the popular diet ones. PPA was pulled by the FDA a year or so ago for human consumption, as I recall because of some stroke consequences. It has not been a problem in animals. I remember we had difficulty obtaining it at the vets at the time because the market dried up quickly. My spayed Irish Setter took it for years for incontinence under the name Propagest, and so did one of my Berner males who is plagued with post nasal drip. It is an anti-histamine. My vet told me I could use the Dexitrim pills if I ran out of the prescription. Both of these dogs now do without any drugs. The Irish turned 13 last Thursday and I'd rather not give her any more meds than necessary. The boy isn't much different on the drug than off, so he's off. There is a hormone-type drug that can be given to spayed females for incontinence. Perhaps it is the one with DES. You can read more about Phenylpropanolamine at http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/infopage/ppa/default.htm. Carol Lingley Ijamsville, MD

Thanks to everyone who offered to help the two purebred BMDs in the Northern Virginia shelter. They were rescued from a PA puppy mill, so that answers the questions about where are the breeders.
