[Bibdesk-users] Synchronization libraries
What, if any, is the recommended method for synchronizing BibDesk libraries *and their collection of attached PDFs* between multiple computers? While it's easy to synchronize the actual files -- using a network file system, rsync, DropBox, etc. -- BibDesk does not seem to notice that the PDFs has been synced since it stores Mac OS file aliases in the BibTeX file, as opposed to say relative path names. Actually, syncing attached files is rather simple: I just have a folder called 'Publications' in my Dropbox and set '~/Dropbox/Publikationen' as the fixed location for Autofile in BibDesk. Since the paths are identical on the different machines, this works flawlessly. Douglas No, BibDesk saves both a relative path and an alias (basically an absolute path and a file ID). In fact, the relative path has preference when resolving the linked file. (Though when the file is moved while the document is open in BibDesk it may follow the file object rather than any replacement.) So if you make sure that you sync keeping the relative path between the .bib file and the PDFs intact than that should work, that's also the recommended way. Christiaan BTW, there's a difference between BibDesk does not notice... and BibDesk does not update its previews I think you mean the latter, which is known, but cannot be fixed (there are potentially too many linked files to track changes to them, it would overwhelm the system, therefore you need to reload the previews by hand using the contextual menu).
