[Ontbirds] Meadowlark - Bethany
---BeginMessage--- Nancy and I headed to the east end of the GTA today in the hopes that the Little Egret would be rediscovered and we could drive to see it and bypass the morning rush hour. (Of course it was rediscovered after we arrived home at 4 PM). We decided to check out the Western Meadowlark near Bethany reported earlier this spring. As we arrived at the location and opened our windows we immediately heard the song of a Western Meadowlark. It took a little while for us to locate it in a leafless tree on the top of the hill west of Pit Rd. As Nancy was observing it though the scope it had been only singing the Western Meadowlark song, we heard an Eastern Meadowlark and I asked Nancy to be sure that the bird she was looking at wasn't singing she said it was now singing but it was the Eastern Meadowlark song. Being a little skeptical I watched the bird through that scope and saw it sing and we heard the Eastern Meadowlark song. I watched it for another 5 or so minutes and it eventually vocalized again and it was the Western Meadowlark song. I have tried to find out some information on the internet but so far haven't been able to determine if this has been noted before and if it would suggest that this bird was a hybrid or if it was a Western Meadowlark which has learned the Eastern Meadowlark song. Any comments would be appreciated. Please email me privately. Regards,Garth Directions as per Geoff Carpentier:From jct. of Hwy 35 and 7A go east to first road on the right (south) – this is Pit Road., then go south about 150 meters to a large open field on your right (west). This is just north of house #64. The bird sings from the top of the hill and often sits in what appears to be a Hawthorn. This is private property and the neighbours are nervous as there have been some break-ins lately, so pls stay on the road at all times. [Ontbirds] Meadowlark Bluebirds at Brick Works.
Had a great morning birding at The Brick Works with Charlotte England. Some of the highlights of our 30 species count were Eastern Bluebirds and a very vocal Meadowlark sitting with a Mockingbird. As we were leaving, we watched a game of tag between a Merlin and a Red Tailed Hawk. Good birding, Ottilie The Brick Works is located in Toronto's east end. Today we had several good sightings to start the spring season with a Turkey Vulture on 5th Line between Berry side Rd and Thomas Dolan. At Constance Creek on Thomas Dolan we observed several Ring-necked Ducks, and a Bufflehead. On Dunrobin Rd east of Thomas Dolan we sighted an Eastern Meadowlark. At the end of Willand Lane off Constance Bay Drive we had two Red-shouldered Hawks calling to each other, and a Northern Shrike in the farm field south of Willand on the skidoo trail. On the river in Constance Bay area we had several Common Mergansers, Lesser Scaup, more Buffleheads, and a huge flock of Geese flying high from the Quebec side of the river. And finally there is a Bald Eagle on the nest at the dyke on the DND property seen from March Valley Rd. [Ontbirds] Meadowlark Great blue Heron - Howe Island, Kingston, ON
I saw a Meadowlark at 9AM this morning on Howe Island but could not confirm Eastern Meadowlark. The Meadowlark was on the hydro line along the main road, and flew into the field on the quarry property close to the road. I also viewed at 4:11PM today a Great blue Heron flying south across the St Lawrence River from Howe Island heading to Holiday Bay on Wolfe Island (where there are also Tundra Swans). Directions: Howe Island can be accessed via the Frontenac Country Ferry off Hwy 2 at Joyceville Road, on County Road 22 (Howe Island Ferry Road) east of Kingston, ON. Proceed approximately 1km on Howe Island Drive to the quarry area located on the right. Ferry fee is $5. ___ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
