Re: [Blackbelly] Bam Bam's diet.

I forget how old Bam Bam is but it's just too weird to me you're feeding him
anything solid. My bottle babies were on liquid only lamb replacer for 3
months, 12 oz, four/three times a day. I think Bam Bam has had such a hard
time and I hope don't have to put him down. We're all hoping for him.

[Blackbelly] Bam Bam Unplugged II, the Sequel

2009-03-23 Thread Michael Smith
three days of enemas with a good 10-15cc oil in each one and finally,
Bam Bam became unplugged and had several blotches of runny poop last
night and this morning.

That is troublesome when you consider, he'd really not had milk for
1.5 days in any capacity, and no food yesterday at all (just tubed
electrolytes with Baking Soda and Molasses nutri-drench).

He was stopped up for a coupla days.

The morning, we took no chances trying to feed him, since he was still
reflexively chewing on nothing, and tubed him 5oz of goat's milk
mixed with formula and a teaspoon of baking soda and about a
tablespoon of veg. oil. (he then pooped again in our arms). Mark
mentioned this oil drench to me in an email, but we had already
intuitively thought about putting oil in both ends.

I am watching to see if he stops reflexively burping a chewing. His
tummy still looks a bit bloated. If you folks think I should switch
back to electrolytes with some oil, I can do that.

Also, nose is dry, he has two more days on penecillin. And ust as a
precaution for the runs (I don;t think it's coccidia, but...) I had
added a dose of Corid for the next 5 days, which is not toxic in the
way that Albon and other sulfa drugs are.

Re: [Blackbelly] Bam-Bam unplugged the sequel

2009-03-23 Thread Dayna Denmark

michael,

Here are some suggestions.
Homemade electrolyte solution:

1 quart water
2 ounces corn syrup
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda

Give this solution for 2 days.No milk or other food. Then return to milk
feeding but give smaller quanities to begin with.

Get some probios paste or gel and start giving it to Bam-Bam. All the meds have
probably been hard on his system.

Crushed grains are better for lambs than whole grains. If you have a grocery
store that offers bulk bins of flour, nuts, etc. you can find all kinds of good
stuff that you can buy in small quanities to try. Look for wheat bran, linseed
meal, brewers yeast, crushed barley. Steer clear of soybean meal because it can
cause urinary calculi in rams. I make a pancake with ingredients like this and
the sheep love it.Just start slowly introducing solids.Sudden changes can and
do paralyze sheep's digestive system.

You might want to buy a pelleted creep feed. Since Bam-Bam is so small he might
benefit if he will eat it. Again start with small portions and build up.

I'm not suprised Bam-Bam just picks at his hay. My bottle bay didn't show much
interest until she went off the bottle. I also had to teach her how to graze
and drink water out of the trough. They learn pretty fast once they are living
24/7 with the rest of the sheep.

If you let Bam-Bam out to eat grass make sure the grass is dry. Limit his time
grazing as too much too fast brings on a whole new set of problems.

Don't give up.I know it's emotionally draining but I also know this group will
do everything possible to help.

keep us posted.

I think Carol told me not to use goat milk or replacer. I use Land O Lakes
Sheep replacer and it worked fine. $30 a bucket here and I used 3 to wean but
could use 2 I think. The cheese farm here uses only cows milk for goats and
they've never had any problems. (Of course after 2 days with the mom) for
colostrum.
