Regulation, or course. They have to justify their worthless existence
somehow...

[Blackbelly] USDA restrictive dog transport regulations

2010-08-26 Thread Ron Keener
when it comes to comments about the USDA and its actions the responses
range from 'explicit four letter words telling the USDA where to go and
what to do when they get there' to 'they are the government and they
know best' - I received the following eloquent comments speaking from
personal experience - obviously I deleted the names to protect the innocent!

The USDA is insane! Re: transporting a working dog in a cab in a crate.
I attempted to do this once with a working dog that came with a flock
of sheep I had purchased. Getting him into the crate was stressful for
all involved. After getting 30 minutes down the road, I was sure that
he was going to have a coronary. Slobbering, whining, etc. I pulled
into the closest vet as an emergency. They took one look at the dog
and told me to transport him with his sheep. In my very well
ventilated cattle panel trailer. Problem solved. The rest of the 18
hour journey home was uneventful.

this is exactly my contention with the USDA - when animals are being
transported an experienced handler has to be given the option to do what
is best for the animal in the current situation irrespective of
government 'regulations'

I would like someone from within the USDA ranks to come out with a
public statement about what is most important when it comes to animal
welfare (this is the Animal Welfare Act we are discussing)

animal welfare? or government regulation?

come on USDA - which is it?

animal? or regulation?

where are your highest priorities?

Thanks to restrictive USDA regulations I no longer transport dogs!
Please let your local USDA inspector know how stupid it is to apply
'pet' transport regulations to climate acclimated working dogs!
With enough pressure maybe we can get the government morons to
recognize the difference between lap pets and working livestock dogs
and that working dogs transport best in the trailer with the livestock
we expect them to protect with their lives!
