Most of the dropped apps are never installed by a distribution, this includes bdftopcf and twm, though we've left those two in BLFS because they are still needed to build and test the system. Most of the dropped apps are still perfectly valid, and continue to be developed. They are just not a part of the 'official' Xorg distribution as they are not needed/used by Linux distributions. Though I haven't tested, the existing instructions are probably good for any of the apps that were dropped between versions. -- DJ Lucas -- http://linuxfromscratch.org/mailman/listinfo/blfs-support FAQ: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/faq.html Unsubscribe: See the above information page

I'm pretty sure xdm is being maintained, but it's just not part of the Xorg release. All the distros have it available, so things do get fixed now and again. It probably won't receive any new features, though. http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/app/xdm/log/ -- Dan -- http://linuxfromscratch.org/mailman/listinfo/blfs-support FAQ: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/faq.html Unsubscribe: See the above information page

DJ, I think it would be good to have that information in the book's introduction to Xorg. Thanks a lot to all of you for the info. It seems like Xorg's folks think the life it's impossible beyond KDE/GNOME. I'm a unix user from «the old days». I love LFS because it provides me the freedom of writing «my rules». My rules are : X+xdm+OpenMotif+xterm (I'm hopely waiting add a «OpenCDE» to this sum). I don't need and I don't want neither KDE nor GNOME. It seems XFree86 respect this freedom of mine. I propose to mention XFree86 in the BLFS book X Window System Environment introduction like BLFS 6.2 did in the past. Anyone has followed the XFree86 way and may advertise me of the problems along it? Thanks in advance. Anyhow, I've since moved on to xorg. It takes a little more work to build (at least by hand,) but the control and understanding gained has been worth it. Openssl install problem
I've compiled openssl on my new system, but for some reason it will only install the /etc files and the /usr/share files. I am using DESTDIR to check things first before installing into the normal locations. I've been trying to figure out why the other files don't get installed. Any suggestions? -- http://linuxfromscratch.org/mailman/listinfo/blfs-support FAQ: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/faq.html Unsubscribe: See the above information page
