I have researched this on Google as I had never heard of this capacity to
send text messages via email.

The following page appears to be very useful though I have not tried it yet.

Hi Larry,

To do this, you have to find out what the extension is for the person you
are calling.

For example, for me, to send me a text message, one would send it to the
following number:

my cell phone num...@rci.rogers.com

That address would go into the to: field of the message.

When sending a text message, remember to place the message in the subject
line, not in the body of the message.

You don't place anything in the body of the message, only in the subject
line.

Hope this helps.

Remember, you'll have to call who ever it is you want to send the message
to, or their carrier, to find out the extension, as it's not always the same

for all carriers.

[Blind-Computing] problem installing software

2009-01-01 Thread jason smith
Hi list,
I just bought myself a new mobile phone. I have been trying to install the
mobile phone software called Talks. I installed this software on my previous
phone okay. However, I am having trouble with this new install. I have
downloaded the Talks software onto my desktop. It comes in a compressed folder
containing several files to install. I have updated PC suite on my computer.
When I enter on the desired files to be installed, I get to the usual do you
want to open this file. I hit enter on open. What should happen, is the Nokia
PC suite installer should then automatically run. However, I am just taken back
to the list of files in the folder. I have tried opening the other files in the
folder, and even downloaded the previous version of Talks to try that. However,
I get the same problem. Does anyone on list have any ideas of what might be
going wrong? I have asked on the Talks users list too, but haven't been able to
find a solution.
thanks Jason

[Blind-Computing] LIST GUIDELINES REMINDER

2009-01-01 Thread Moderator

Here are the list guidelines, all members should read them carefully!
Welcome to the Blind Computing mailing list.

This list has been created for the purpose of discussing any and all aspects
of computing with the blind user in mind.

List Guidelines:

The following are guidelines set forth by the list management team and every
member is expected to abide by them.

1. Profanity and ethnic or racial slurs will not be tolerated.

2. Flaming of individuals or groups or organizations of any kind will not be
tolerated.

3. Advertising is not permitted.

4. Political or religious inferences or discussions are not permitted.

5. Forwarded messages and attachments are not permitted. If you have an
article or message of interest which relates to the nature of this list send

it to the list owner and if it is appropriate, it will be posted to the
list. Additionally if you want to make an announcement about another list
send it

to the list owner for consideration. Do not post it to the list before

obtaining approval.

6. No off-topic posts! Simply placing off topic in the subject line does not
make it all right. Off-topic posts include but are not limited to
discussions

of Blind advocacy groups,

products for the blind that are not computer-related items,

Transportation for the blind, and Job opportunities or concerns. If you are
not sure whether or not your topic is appropriate contact the list owner

for approval before posting.

7. Cross-posting is not permitted, and members should only post in the
following manner:

Using the TO: field with only one list address.

The SUBJECT: field should be short and to the point without including any
member names.

The reason for this is that in cases where people setup their message rules
to go by the To: field often times such rules get fowled up and in effect

do not work properly. Also cross posting might allow you to reach many lists
at the same time but the fact is such a post might not be on topic for

each and every list. This practice does nothing ut clutter up such lists
with

unwanted off topic messages along with annoying the list moderators.

8. On topic posts may include but are not limited to discussions of

Screen readers and magnifiers, computer peripherals, (scanners printers
Braille devices etc.), Computer operation, Computer maintenance and

Computer building.

9. Subject lines should be clear and to the point! Subject lines such as I
Need help or Does anyone know are not descriptive and might be ignored

by the very person who might otherwise have answered your query.

10. Keep the message content relative to the topic being discussed! If the
conversation starts to drift from the original topic initiate a new

conversation message with a new subject line to reflect the new topic.

11. No auto responders are to be used on this list! Those who use auto
responders for vacations and so forth must make sure that this list is not

included. Any person who sends an auto response message will be removed!

No message headers please! Nobody wants to read an irrelevant message before
reading your post.

If you want to plug your business church or whatever do it somewhere else
not on this list!

If you want to include contact information and a tag line at the bottom of
your messages feel free to do so but do not make another message out of

it.

Remember that there are people of different walks of life origin age groups
and levels of computer experience on the list. Individuals with more

knowledge and experience should be patient with those who are trying to
become more proficient.

The use of a spell checker is strongly encouraged.

If you have comments, questions or concerns about how the list is being run
do not post them to the list contact the list management team.

It is not the place for any individual list member to admonish another
member for an improper post let the management Team do their job.

Hopefully everyone will benefit from this list and it will allow all of us
to be more comfortable and productive using these machines that help us get

thru this thing called life!

* By joining this list you accept the guidelines as outlined above, and
agree to abide by them. If you don't agree, then you should unsubscribe.

Re: [Blind-Computing] problem installing software

2009-01-01 Thread Victor

Hi Jason,

Are you aware that the software installs through the phone itself?

Some people, myself included, when I first got the phone, thought that PC
Suite would install the software for me, and I could use the computer, with
Jaws installed to install the software for me, however, I quickly found out
that wasn't the case.

Once your computer says are you sure you want to open this software, and you
reply with run, then the software, PC Suite, should send the software to the
phone.

I'm assuming you have the phone connected to your computer when you do this?

The only problem is that the phone is not a talking install, so you have to
do it, sight unseen.

There is a great site you can visit, with a detailed step by step audio
instruction on how to do this, meaning, how to install talks onto a phone,
without speech.

The site is:

http://3p.blindsea.com/

I just visited the site, and have gotten the direct download link for the
file, so download it, and go ahead and listen to it.

The link to download the file is:

http://3p.blindsea.com/casts/talks03seminar-07-29-2006.mp3

That's where I got the file I used to install the update onto my phone.

It's an MP3 file, and really detailed, as the person installing talks does
it from the beginning.

I should also note that you'll find the latest Talks updates for your
particular phone, so you should download the updates for Talks there also.

Hope this helps.

Oh, I almost forgot. You have to use PC Suite to enter on the file you want
to install, otherwise the software installs onto your computer, which your
computer won't run, hence why nothing happens when you activate the install.

Sorry to be so patronizing, but I have no way of gauging how much experience
you have in these types of things. Smile.

I have a minor more annoying problem then anything with Jaws 10.0 startup
wizard that comes up every time boot up my computer plus Jaws speaks real
slow like at the default settings when first installed Jaws which happen at
the log on screen in windows xp pro. So wondered if anyone else has this
kind of or similar problem and if so how did you solve it?

I was hoping didn't have to uninstall Jaws just to fix this problem.

I am wondering if I should have this one item checked in my options

Use Passive FTP (for firewall and DSL modem compatibility)-ON

The reason I am asking is, when I first turn on my computer and this has
always been the case, so it's not like suddenly this happened..

I hear something based on my hearing ability as there is no text
associated to copy to make sure of what I'm hearing, but finding this

I hear: FPB SRV

or it could be:

FPV SRV

Anyways, that has to do it's thing before anything else comes up and
including Jaws..

So do I keep it as it is or, is it safe to uncheck it or turn the setting

This is an HP machine running xp pro and IE 6. I do have a 2 wire Gateway

Re: [Blind-Computing] Pop-3 Email to text message

2009-01-01 Thread Victor

Hi Annette,

In most cases, you can just go ahead and do it, and you don't need an
internet connection to do it.

You simply place the e-mail address in the to field of the message, and send
away.

You may have to activate this feature on your hand set, or with your
provider, but in most cases, this is free.

For example, when I first did it, this service had to be activated by me,
using my text message service.

I sent myself a message, and I was notified that I had an e-mail text
message.

It told me that to activate this service, all I had to do was reply to the
message with a yes or no.

Naturally, I responded with a yes, and, from that point on, I could receive
the messages on my cell phone.

You have to make sure the person sending you the text message is sending it
in plain text, otherwise the message will come down as a multimedia message,
which your provider may charge you extra for.

You also have to make sure you have a really good text message plan, as it
will take you a text message, or, at least, it did with my provider, to
reply to the notification that you wish to download/receive the text
message.

I guess this is a protection in case you get a spam message, or, if someone
sends you a virus. That sort of thing.

In any case, just place the person's e-mail address in the to field of your
text message, and type the message as you normally would.

Again, you may have to activate this service with your provider, possibly
using your handset, and/or, by calling them, but you'll know whether you're
capable of this once you try to send out your first message.

You can also try it for yourself, by sending yourself a text message from
your e-mail client.

Hope this helps.

Thanks.

[Blind-Computing] Outlook Express question

Hi all and Happy New Year.

I am wanting to imbed a sound file in an email. I understand that you open
a new email message, go to the Format menu, down to background submenu, and
then to sound. My problem is that most items under the Format menu say
unavailable. I don't think they have always said unavailable, but don't
know how to make those items become available again. Does anyone have any

Hi Becky;

Happy New Year to all. Try following the steps beginning with #5 in the
list below.

Adding a music file as a background in an EMail message.

This feature is only available in Outlook Express.

1. Open a new message. Put in the recipients address, subject and any
message you may want to include.

2. Go to the format menu, alt o.

3. Arrow down to the background menu, or type the letter B.

4. Arrow down to sound, or type the letter s.

5. Tab to browse and press enter.

6. If you are wanting to add a midi file, tab one time to, files of type and
type the letter m for midi.

7. Shift tab 2 times back to your list view.

8. Navigate to the file you want to add. If the file is not in that list,
you can press your backspace to navigate to different folders.

9. Once you find the file you want to add, press enter on the file name.

10. Tab to, repeat settings. You can choose to just play the sound, or play
the sound continuously by pressing your up or down arrow. If you choose to

just play the sound, you can tab one more time and select how many times you
want the sound to be played by using your up arrow.

11. Tab to OK and press enter.

12. Send the message as you normally would.

Hope this has helped. Take care.

Hi Mike.
Thanks very much for the step-by-step instructions. I will keep this in my
notes. I did find that I had to first hit enter on Rich Text HTML which is
also under Format, to make Background available. This is such a neat trick.

I'm still trying to determine why several of the other items under Format
say unavailable.

Thanks also to Bill G., who answered my email off list.

just play the sound, you can tab one more time and select how many times you
want the sound to be played by using your up arrow.

11. Tab to OK and press enter.

12. Send the message as you normally would.

Hope this has helped. Take care.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Outlook Express question

Hi all and Happy New Year.

I am wanting to imbed a sound file in an email. I understand that you open
a new email message, go to the Format menu, down to background submenu, and
then to sound. My problem is that most items under the Format menu say
unavailable. I don't think they have always said unavailable, but don't
know how to make those items become available again. Does anyone have any
ideas about this? Thanks.

Becky

[Blind-Computing] Web Cam Nightmares

2009-01-01 Thread Marvin Hunkin
Hi.
well, just noticed in skype, my microphone device shows up and tried the
windows default, real tech , and real tech 1.
and guess what, tried the first 2 and did a skype test call and nothing.
but when i use the real tech 2, and do a test call.
guess what, even though it is muffled, i hear my recorded voice.
so was wondering, to get the best sound quality, and using just standard
heaphones, would a good set of headphones, or maybe a special head set,
would that improve the quality.
and when i did a test message, sort of muffled, and could sort of hear my
voice, being say 30 cm above the top of the machine.
and when i went to options.
and let skype adjust my microphone settings.
but, i still have the problem, of when i went to the video camera settings,
said no web cam and a generic web cam windows device.
so was wondering, if i have to install maybe some video camera software.
so, can you let me know, how to resolve it.
so at least can use skype, and even though a bit muffled.
and using the real tech audio microphone real tech 2 option in skype.
or would it improve quality if i downloaded the latest real tech 2 drivers.
let me know how to resolve this.
at least got voice audio, even though not a very good quality.
cheers Marvin.
ps: for playing video , what is a good player to player.
just downloaded from bit torrent the whole 7 seasons of voyager.
avi files.
and was using a client called miro, but not very accessible.
got windows media player, but not happy about the avi format in windows
media player.
and then quick time not happy, and reverting to the default format.
so, could i try some thing like quick time alternative.
for the visually impaired.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Safe mode

2009-01-01 Thread Patricia Dunbar

Unless it's changed you will need sighted assistance for that..
It happened to me one time and now don't take this as gospel...but I might
have typed the words, exit and entered on it and I was ok, but that could
have been when I accidentally exited to ms dos..

I think I have gotten my computer in safe mode because I cannot make any
changes to anything; could some/one please tell me how to get the machine
out of safe mode. Thanks,
