[Blind-Computing] Upgrading to Windows 7

2009-07-26 Thread Chris Hallsworth

Hello all,
First of all, this e-mail is not to flame anybody, nor is it designed to
name and shame people. However, after what I've read that Netbooks with
Windows XP can't be upgraded to Windows 7, this is completely false. All
machines that are running either Windows XP or Vista can be upgraded to 7.
The difference here is that no XP edition supports in-place upgrades,
meaning that a clean install is required. You can still use your upgrade DVD
to perform the clean install though since XP would be recognized by the DVD,
thus you can go ahead with the clean install. With Vista, however, the
upgrade path depends on what Vista edition you're currently using. Here's
the upgrade paths you can follow:

Vista Home Premium -7 Home Premium
Vista Business -7 Professional
Vista Ultimate -7 Ultimate
Other editions of Vista, like Home Basic, are not supported, and thus no
upgrade path exists. There's also no upgrade path if you wish to upgrade
from a 32-bit edition of Windows Vista to a 64-bit edition of Windows 7. In
both cases a clean install is required, however the upgrade DVD will work
for this since Vista will be recognized by the DVD.
What I will say though is that it's completely your choice if you decide to
cancel your licence, but I thought I'd better get this out there for fear of
misinformation.

So hope this all helps and it clears things.
Have a good day.

You can certainly run windows 7 on your netbook. You have to do a clean
install though. Make sure that you have enough ram in your netbook to make
it run smooth, then there are no problems. I have bought an additional 2 gig
for my netbook and should get the ram delivered on Monday.
So if you would like to run windows 7 on it you could.

Hi rogelio,
Yes chris' message listed after yours, so just now read his. I have a lenovo
ideapad S E 10 e. You have to undo 2 screws and then once you have it open
you also just replace the ram alreaydy in there, very easy to get to as
well. So hopefully I can do that myself. I purchased 2 gigs, the lenovo has
512 on board and then a stick with 512, which is what I will replace with
the 2 gigs. I will 'loose' the 512 on board as it will only recognize up to
2 ram at least this is what the manual said, but I will still have double
than what I have now, so I am pleased.

Ah, well, salespeople are very good at enticing you to stay with what you've
got, or they'll try and sell you a better model. Jut don't listen to them.
At the end of the day you've purchased your netbook and it is then up to you
what you do with it. I mean, Currys could have said the same, but they
didn't, and even if they did I wouldn't have listened to them.

you know that don't lie. This is because I am having a little trouble
configuring the firewall in my Netbook so it can pick up a good signal. So
I'll know in a little while.

OK. I read some good reviews about Lenovo. On mine on the right side
before the USB port. I just click a little card and it slides right out.
And the new one goes right in. I just got to hear the click again. Mine
 is
an Asus. The sound quality is very good and the speed is incredible. I
can't wait to put Windows 7 in it. I don't know why these people tend to
 be
so dishonest. I guess she was trying to be a salesperson. She started
about another series that is coming out later that is going to supposedly
 be
 able to handle Windows 7.

 Hi rogelio,
Yes chris' message listed after yours, so just now read his. I have a
 lenovo
ideapad S E 10 e. You have to undo 2 screws and then once you have it open
you also just replace the ram alreaydy in there, very easy to get to as
well. So hopefully I can do that myself. I purchased 2 gigs, the lenovo
 has
512 on board and then a stick with 512, which is what I will replace with
the 2 gigs. I will 'loose' the 512 on board as it will only recognize up
 to
2 ram at least this is what the manual said, but I will still have double
than what I have now, so I am pleased.

Good looking. Chris also informed me. I will also purchase an extra

 You
just take out the stick from the side of your computer. And put the new

in. What kind of Netbook do you have?

Did you maybe try a different installation package? Like the download off
the FS web site? If you did, then there is something wrong with your

Re: [Blind-Computing] Problem With Jaws

2009-07-26 Thread Jacob Kruger

Silly question, but is jaws definitely set to start automatically?

Either in the jaws window, go to the options menu and then hit enter on
basics and tab around that dialogue til you find the option, or else if it's
running in the system tray, hit jaws key + J, right arrow on options
submenu, and hit enter on basics.

The checkbox for starting it automatically is literally called something
like automatically start jaws, and once you've made sure it's checked, tab
to and hit space on the ok button.

Stay well

[Blind-Computing] CD DVD drives sharing on network places

2009-07-26 Thread The Cluless Wanderer
Hi friends,
I'm wondering if I can share an external CD, DVD drive under my network places.
I'm using a Hewlett Packard Netbook with Windows XP Pro which doesn't have a CD
or DVD drive on it and a Windows 2000 Pro on a Del desktop which has a very
slow processer. where I use the netbook computer there isn't enough room for
the external drive to sit and I would need a 23 foot cable to make the
connection. I'd like to connect the external drive to the desktop computer and
share it on the network and use the netbook computer to operate the external
drive. My question is, can this be done and which processer will be used to
read the CD's I'm ripping from or burning to. Both computers are connected to
the same wireless router. Any help in this dilemma would be appreciated.

[Blind-Computing] Boot from VHD

2009-07-26 Thread Chris Hallsworth

Hello all,
Here's how to use a perhaps little known new feature in Windows 7, boot from
VHD.

1. Open Disk Management.
2. Right click the disk management tree, and click create VHD. If you have a
VHD already which you'd like to use for the boot from VHD feature, skip
this step and read on to find out how you attach a VHD.
3. Follow the instructions, however I recommend dynamically expanding rather
than fixed as fixed takes longer to create.
4. Click ok. The new VHD will be attached to the system, appearing as an
additional physical disk with nothing on them, not even a partition.
5. If you have a VHD already that you'd like to attach, right click the Disk
Management tree and choose attach VHD. Click the browse button to find a VHD
file.

6. Click ok. The VHD is attached to the system.
7. Now here's the fun part! Either run the Windows 7 install from the iso or
the DVD, choose custom when asked, and choose your new disk, which should be
recognized by the size of it.
8. From then on, you'll have a boot menu, both with Windows 7 as the
label, but the Windows 7 installed on the VHD will be the first, so if you
just press enter or wait a while then the bootloader will unpack the VHD and
start loading the OS.

Now how cool is that!
Eventually the VHD support will be limited to creating and
mounting/dismounting in Home Premium and Professional, whilst all features,
including boot from VHD, will be available in Enterprise and Ultimate.

Let us know how you got on with it. Enjoy!

I'm sorry but that is not true. You can upgrade any machine with Windows
XP, but the installation must be a clean install. So up to you if you wish
to cancel your licence, but what they said isn't true.

Hello all,
First of all, this e-mail is not to flame anybody, nor is it designed to
name and shame people.

If you do the first part of the installation inside Windows, regardless of
upgrade or full, your screen reader will walk you through it all. When it
reboots the rest of it will be automated till it's ready for you to set it
up. You should then be able to launch Narrator with Windows U, Alt N, to
complete the setup. Hope this helps.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Upgrading to Windows 7

 Hello all,
First of all, this e-mail is not to flame anybody, nor is it designed to
name and shame people.
You can still use your upgrade
 DVD

to perform the clean install though since XP would be recognized by the
 DVD,

thus you can go ahead with the clean install.
What I will say though is that it's completely your choice if you decide
 to
cancel your licence, but I thought I'd better get this out there for fear
 of

 misinformation.
So hope this all helps and it clears things.
 Have a good day.

[Blind-Computing] accessing nortons internet security 2009

2009-07-26 Thread G Mail
Hi
   I recently up dated from Norton's internet security 2008 to 2009. I
bought the two year package. So, I am committed to making it work. However,
when I open the product there is a screen that looks blank to the JAWS 10
program. Any ideas on how to get past this screen? Is this a splash screen that
one can make go away?
 Any help is appreciated.

God bless,

Win Frotz is an emulator, right? If this is a program that is trustworthy
then the scanner sometimes can go off with this alert, because malware is
sometimes compiled and packed in the same manner as was used with this
program. Considering the fact that this is a free emulator it may be a false
positive. best to just go ahead and use an online scanner to recheck the
file in question.
kaspersky.has a good online scan for single files. so you may want to run

Re: [Blind-Computing] Boot from VHD

Cool! That and the XP Mode emulation features are the only compelling
reasons for using Windows 7 Pro or Ultimate that I have heard. I have
resisted due to JAWS costs. It is my understanding that would require JAWS

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Boot from VHD

Hello all,
Here's how to use a perhaps little known new feature in Windows 7, boot
from VHD.

1. Open Disk Management.
2. Right click the disk management tree, and click create VHD. If you have
a VHD already which you'd like to use for the boot from VHD feature,
skip this step and read on to find out how you attach a VHD.
3. Follow the instructions, however I recommend dynamically expanding
rather than fixed as fixed takes longer to create.
4. Click ok. The new VHD will be attached to the system, appearing as an
additional physical disk with nothing on them, not even a partition.
5. If you have a VHD already that you'd like to attach, right click the
Disk Management tree and choose attach VHD. Click the browse button to
find a VHD file.

6. Click ok. The VHD is attached to the system.
7. Now here's the fun part! Either run the Windows 7 install from the iso
or the DVD, choose custom when asked, and choose your new disk, which
should be recognized by the size of it.
8. From then on, you'll have a boot menu, both with Windows 7 as the
label, but the Windows 7 installed on the VHD will be the first, so if
you just press enter or wait a while then the bootloader will unpack the
VHD and start loading the OS.

Now how cool is that!
Eventually the VHD support will be limited to creating and
mounting/dismounting in Home Premium and Professional, whilst all
features, including boot from VHD, will be available in Enterprise and
Ultimate.

Let us know how you got on with it. Enjoy!

only so much he can do. Any ideas? Thanks so much.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Back up Utility

I don't think it is installed automatically in the XP Home Edition. You can,
however, install it from the XP CD. (I'm assuming that you can do that on a
Netbook, but I actually don't know that.)

1. Insert the CD Rom and navigate to CD-ROM Drive:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP

2. Launch the Ntbackup.msi file to start the wizard that installs Backup

3. When the wizard is complete, choose Finish.
