Re: [Blind-Computing] Finding out how a program is a processing hog
In the task manager - windows key + R, and type in taskmgr and hit enter, on the second page, which is the processes page, you'll find a whole lot of processes running, but if you know the executable name of an application, and can find it there, there are columns for CPU usage, memory usage etc., but you'll most likely need to use something like the jaws cursor to read all columns, and you can also click on column headers to sort the items according to those values, and a second click would generally reverse the sort order - as in most/least at the top/bottom. Alternatively, if using jaws you could also virtualise the window using jaws key + alt + W if you're already on the executable name you're looking for, and then find it again in the virtual on screen display, etc. Stay well Jacob Kruger Blind Biker Skype: BlindZA '...fate had broken his body, but not his spirit...' - Original Message - From: Mike Barbara In Arcadia mb69ma...@charter.net To: Blind Computing blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Saturday, March 19, 2011 3:25 AM Subject: [Blind-Computing] Finding out how a program is a processing hog Hi All: Over the years I have heard this program or that program is a processor hog. Re: [Blind-Computing] new to blind computing and searching
Since most blind people have fingers, voice input isn't really necessary. Voice input is more for people who have paralysis or issues with dexterity. As far as screen readers being clunky, this is true for some situations, but notthe for the one you mentioned, having to navigate through all the links at the top of a page. Most screen readers have many navigation functions that allow you to quickly and easily navigate a page, including jumping over that first, usually a frame, to get to the body of the page. A voice input system won't change that for you. You will still need a screen reader to get information out of the system. Speech to text is merely for putting information into the system. So, you would still have to learn to navigate a web page even if you were using a voice input system. -- Blue skies. Dan Rossi Carnegie Mellon University. Re: [Blind-Computing] Keyword browsing.
I'm real interested in this keyword browsing using internet explorer so I ran a google search and i got as far as reading the article at http://searchenginewatch.com/3381361 and that's it. What do I do next? -Original Message- From: blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Dan Rossi Sent: Wednesday, February 23, 2011 11:50 AM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: [Blind-Computing] Keyword browsing. Maybe folks here already know about this, but I found it quite interesting. I haven't figured out if you could do this in Internet Explorer yet, but I've been experimenting with keyword browsing in FireFox. You can create a keyword for a web site, then instead of either typing the URL into the address bar, or searching through your book marks, you just type the keyword into the address bar. More importantly, you can adjust the URL in the book mark and add a variable into it. Let me give an example. I use www.ninjawords.com because I can't spell to save my life, and sometimes the spell checker doesn't even know what I am talking about. NinjaWords seems pretty good at figuring out what I meant to spell, and it is simply a really fast front-end to wiktionary. Anyway, I can set up a keyword, n, with a URL of www.ninjawords.com/%s Then I I can open FireFox, type: n sprocket And it immediately brings me to the definition page for sprocket. Saves me the time of going to the web page, then typing sprocket into the search field and hitting enter. You can set up keywords for all kinds of sites that take inputs, like google maps, or google calendar. So, if you use google calendar, you could have a keyword, say, cal, setup and then you could just open FireFox and type: cal dinner with Dave and Patty on Friday at 6:00 at their house. Poof, I've just entered that event in my google calendar. www.lifehacker.com had a great article about this, and although I've had to stumble my way through setting up a couple of these key words, it seems pretty useful so far. Does anyone know if this is possible in IE? Not really sure if I care as FireFox is very slowly drawing me in. And IE has been pissing me off recently. But a lot of people prefer IE, so just thought it would be helpful to them if someone knew about keyword browsing there. Of course, maybe I am way far behind the times, and everyone has been doing this for the last couple of years. -- Blue skies. Dan Rossi Carnegie Mellon University. Re: [Blind-Computing] new to blind computing and searching
Kenny, Ah, I see. What you are looking for is an artificial intelligence. They don't exist yet. Although, Watson made it look pretty real. Just because a computer can turn your speech into machine readable text, doesn't mean it understands what you are saying. If you wanted to tell your computer go to facebook, update my status, then someone would have had to program all the commands that it requires to do those things, then program the speech recognition system to execute those commands when it receives your commands. I'm not saying it can't be done, but for that system to work for more than a couple of web sites, or a few dozen commands, it would be pretty complex. Re: [Blind-Computing] Keyword browsing.
Kimsan, Sorry, but as far as I can tell, the google toolbar keyword thing is different than the keyword feature in FireFox. In google toolbar, it seems to work more like the instant browsing on google, as you type words into your address bar, it offers web sites that it thinks you want to go to. With a keyword in FireFox, it is just like setting up a shortcut to a web site. Instead of typing www.google.com, you can just type g, if you have set up g as a keyword for www.google.com. Also, if you setup your g keyword to be www.google.com/search?q=%s then you could just type g turboencabulator in the address bar and you would immediately be brought to the google search results page as if you had gone to google and typed turboencabulator into the search box and hit enter. It's pretty slick. -- Blue skies. Dan Rossi Carnegie Mellon University. Re: [Blind-Computing] Keyword browsing.
Dan: Thanks for the clarification. I have FF on my system but never used it. I should start and try out your neat little trick, sounds slick, as you say. I just thought I would try and see if IE can do the same but apparently it doesn't. Take care. -Original Message- From: blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Dan Rossi Sent: Saturday, March 19, 2011 7:21 PM To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Keyword browsing. Re: [Blind-Computing] Keyword browsing.
Kimsan, Try out FireFox, it's not too bad to get started. It took a long time for me to start using it because I thought there would be this steep learning curve, but there isn't. Webvisum, to solve CAPTCHAs is what really sold me. And then I found the keyword thing. IE 9 may have keywords, but I have no idea. -- Blue skies. Dan Rossi Carnegie Mellon University. Re: [Blind-Computing] iTunes For Windows, F6 and no search results
F6 is broken (Apple broke it in 10.2). It's annoying but iTunes is still usable. The tricky part is to get out of the iTunes store but there's a workaround. To search the iTunes store: - Select the iTunes store from the sources list. You should hear a woosh-sound - this means that the page has loaded/refreshed. - Now press F6 and you should land in the search box. Type in what you are looking for and press Enter and wait for the woosh-sound. - Press F6 to move focus to the iTunes store. You may need to wait a while (I had to wait afew seconds) before you start navigating the store. Press ctrl-home to move to the top. JAWS should announce iTunes Store or something similar. You are good to go. You can now navigate your search results with standard web navigation (virtual cursor) - When done or if you want to perform a new search: Press Ctrl-Alt-f. This will move focus to the search box. Repeat the steps above to perform a new search. If your intention is to get out of the iTunes store: Press Ctrl-Alt-f to move focus to the search box. Then press Shift-F6 and you should be back in the sources list. This works, but let's hope Apple fixes the F6 key soon. -Original Message- From: blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com [mailto:blind-computing-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Brad Dunse' Sent: 19. mars 2011 22:53 To: Blind Computing Subject: [Blind-Computing] iTunes For Windows, F6 and no search results Running XP Pro, Jaws 12, iTunes Version 10.2.1.1. Is there a fix for the F6 not working once you are in iTunes Store and in the results area as it will not let you out? And more importantly no matter what I put in for a search string, iTunes will only pull up the same junk of American Idol, Justin Timberlake, latest hits, movies, TV shows, and anything else they have on that main page. It won't find anything I type in the search field.
