[Blind-Computing] AVG and Jaws

2012-08-29 Thread Niamh
Hi all I fell victim to a horrible worm, something which sounded like MS Anti
Virus Platinum.
My computer was out for days and it took an engineer to remove it and clean up
the computer.
He recommended AVG as my program.
I had been using MS security suit, but it got by that.
Is AVG good and Accessible?

I often enough just switch between jaws and NVDA - turn off the one, and
then turn on the other using the shortcuts they both have on desktop, with
shortcut keys assigned.

Also, if, by accident, they both end up running, insert key + number row 3
tells jaws to pass next key through to other apps, so I can then next hit
insert + Q to tell NVDA to exit/unload.

Hi,

Can one run NVDA alongside Jaws on the same PC? If so what might the
possible problems and best practices be?

Reason for this query is currently using Jaws 10 IE7 on Vista and keep
getting messages that my browser needs to be updated to work on web sites
visited. I know IE9 does not work with Jaws 10 and some of the newer
browser versions and looking for alternatives to resolving this without
having to upgrade Jaws again which is proving more and more expensive...

Any advice greatly appreciated.

[Blind-Computing] OE Identities Question

2012-08-29 Thread Mike B.
Hi All,

I looked in an Identities folder at the following location:

C:\Documents and Settings\Mike\Application Data\Identities

There are 8 folders here, they are all empty. I made sure that all
folders were unhidden all operating system folders were showing. Can
these folders be removed being that they are empty? All advice will be

Hi Mike,
Wrong location!
Here it is:

C:\Documents and Settings\Mike\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities

Here is what the entire path might look like for the folders in one
identity:

C:\Documents and Settings\Mike\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{9B14C208-C69C-4852-BB2E-DAA18D7C580D}\Microsoft\Outlook

Another way to the folders for a particular identity would be getting the
stored folder location from within OE,
and I believe I have instructions on the website:

Mike,
I would leave the empty folders alone,
sometimes Windows or other programs will create folders or files for a

2012-08-29 Thread Lauren Simmons
Hi Niamh,

Firstly, sorry about my previous empty message. Human error. (Smile).

In all likelihood, while using Internet Explorer or other browser, you
probably clicked or pressed enter on a warning message telling you
that certain worms or viruses had been discovered on your computer and
that you should click on a Scan or Clean link to get rid of them.
In fact, when you clicked on the scan link promising to clean your
computer, this was actually a virus you were installing. I'm sure your
computer probably went crazy after that with crazy popups and weird
sounds, and when you tried running your antivirus such as MSE you
could not do so. there are many, many variants of this malware on the
internet.

The reason you got infected was not because Microsoft Security
Essentials failed you (there is no major commercial antivirus that can
protect the user from mistakes in judgment when it comes to this kind
of prompt). AVG will not be able to help you if you come across the
same type of prompt, and Nod32 will also not be able to protect you.
The computer user also bares some responsibility for the security of
their computer.

You should seriously consider taking a multi-layer approach to
protection. You should use a properly configured MSE, and use
Malwarebytes Pro for full real time protection (do not use the free
malwarebytes as it can't protect you in real time and will probably
not be completely effective in ridding your computer of malware after
the fact).

Very glad to hear you are back on your feet as I was a bit upset when
this happened to me also. Luckily, I had an image of my computer from
just a few days prior, which I was able to use to restore my computer
to a working state within an hour.
