[Blind-Computing] Baffling security message

2013-04-05 Thread Brad Dunse
I have two questions per the below.

Using Jaws 14, Win 7, and G-Data Internet Security; I'd recently been
periodically hearing a help balloon say, G-data Internet Security is not
running click here to start G-Data Internet Security.

I get same, but not all the time, with Windows Defender, though I had that
turned off because of G-Data running, an dit is indeed off.

I've had my wife look at the status icons of G-Data and it shows on, I look
in the system tray and I get options of disable firewall, disable virus
protection, etc. so I assume it is on. I've looked in the process and
services running and the firewall and G-Data scan is running. I've looked in
msconfig and G-Data is set to start at start up. So I asume it's up and
running as it should.

Unless for some reason as with other programs, when they are busy Windows 7,
which is classic for me anyway, will mis inform a program is not running,
when in fact it is just under heavy load at the time, such as Quickbooks
when backing up.

G-Data goes out to the net and checks for virus updates every 45-minutes or
so, and though I haven't connected that dot yet, but I wonder if that is
why?

How can I access or click this help balloon before it disappears, I've tried
to find it but maybe there's a Jaws hot key?

Any clues to why this message?

Thanks,

Brad

[Blind-Computing] help getting thru drop down select boxes

2013-04-05 Thread DoubleLegal
Hello all,

I used to know how to do this with a certain keystroke but have forgotten how.

I have older versions of JAWS so this may not be a problem for newer JAWS
versions, but how do I go thru the selections in a drop down list without it
automatically selecting and sending me to the very first item in the list?

I use either JAWS 8 or JAWS 10 and Windows XP Pro.

Thanks for any and all help.

Hi friends,

Using Jaws 14 Win 7.

Recently I upgraded to E9, and I am facing a major problem with dialog
boxes. For instance when I Click on a download the usual box with the usual
buttons pop up, and Jaws speaks them all, but for the life of me, I cannot
locate them in order to press. Although I tried all three cursors and the
tab. Is there any setting that I have to make in Jaws or IE9 to correct
this?

Thank you for any help.

Samson.

[Blind-Computing] WLM auto announcement

2013-04-05 Thread Fred Adams
I just installed WLM for e-mail on my backup computer yesterday and I am
trying to get it setup. I am using W7, latest jaws and WLM on that
computer. I can't find the setting to complete e-mail addresses
automatically in the settings. It is not in the same place on the quick
settings menu as outlook 2010. I would appreciate it if someone could help
me with this. Thanks much,

Re: [Blind-Computing] Symantec and JAWS Screen Reader

2013-04-05 Thread Mujtaba Merchant
Hi Maark,

I had my IT department address this concern of mine. And it is Symantec that
I have on my work PC not Norton. So I really can't tell.

But FYI the IT department of my company added the exe file of JAWS and NVDA
to the exceptions list and updated some policies of Symantec.

Hi
Any ideas on how to create a Tamper Protection exception for JAWS in
Nortons 360? I love 360 but I want to be sure JAWS is free to do what it
needs to do.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Symantec and JAWS Screen Reader

Hello Folks,

This is something spectacular I came across at my work place and thought I
should share it with you guys.

I work on a Windows 7 OS PC with JAWS 14 installed on it. Now, this PC is
behind a corporate firewall and has Symantec protection I believe corporate
edition. When the IT department installed JAWS on this PC there were initial
glitches in installing it and activating it to the full version. Had
something to do with Administrative privilages. Anyhow, this has nothing
with the concern of this email.

I started experiencing iratic behavior from JAWS on applications that were
of my daily use. For example we use Microsoft Communicator 2007 as an
internal communication tool or IM client as some of you may know it as. JAWS
fails to announce the status of my contact in the contacts list, there is
absolutely no clue if the contact is away, in a meeting, busy or just
offline. Then on some web pages it failed to read elements like buttons and
some links. In excel when I switch to the worksheet from another
application, by default the home tab is already selected so I need to press
the escape key before doing anything on the sheet. Sometimes, JAWS would
just get paranoid and start reading arbid text from an application which is
no longer in focus.

This made me get really frustrated and I wrote to Freedom Scientific. They
gave me a work around for my communicator issue, unfortunately it did not
work as expected. I did a little research on the net and found out the
culprit is the Symantec protection software that is blocking JAWS
functionality. Here is what Symantec had to say on their website:

You can create file exceptions for Tamper Protection. You might want to
create a Tamper Protection exception if Tamper Protection interferes with a
known safe application on your client computers. For example, Tamper
Protection might block an assistive technology application.

Source: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=contentid=HOWTO80927
id=HOWTO80927

Now my question is why does one have to got to go through this extra effort
in adding JAWS or for that matter any other screen reader in the exemption
list of applications in Symantec? Should not they have already figured out
that this will create hinderances to any blind user in a corporate
environment? Why can't Freedom Scientific OR Symantec take some ownership in
creating a more accessible environment for a blind user when it comes to
security.

Lucky for me, I have some technical knowledge to back up my researching
ability, imagine a novice blind computer user, he/she would have to go
through a lot of trouble to demystify this strange behavior of his installed
copy of JAWS. This is of most concern because there is no mention of this
issue being reported by Freedom Scientific on their site. I am going to dig
their forums to further investigate this claim of mine.

download to install flash 10, and haven't had a crash since, my youtube
videos etc works great now finally!

Firefox beyond v 18 hasn't played nice with certain websites and Jaws (I
don't' know what screen reader you're using). Something having to do with
flash or whatnot. Mozilla should still have older versions of Firefox
available for download. Sites like OldApps.com will have older versions of
Firefox as well.
After trying both Firefox 18 and 19 and running into these issues, I just
rolled back to the enterprize version of Firefox since the update is only
once a year or so outside of security updates that is.

I don't have the exicutable file on hand, but it should be easy enough to
find.

Hi all.

Firefox updated on my work pc this morning.

Now I can't access several critical sites.

Does anybody have a copy of Firefox 19 that they would be willing to upload
to dropbox for me.

As far as I know this is perfectly legal under the Firefox license.

If not I apologize for this message.

Thanks.
