[Blind-Computing] Chirp Software

2013-05-15 Thread Bob J.
Chirp software is used to program many makes and models of amateur radio
transceivers and reportedly works very well for sighted computer users.

I have downloaded that software and installed it on my Windows XP machine where
I am also running JFW v10.

I have found the Chirp software to be barely accessible on my XP machine with
this version of JFW and I am wondering if anyone out there is using the Chirp
software with some measure of success. If so, please share your details for
success!

[Blind-Computing] Logitech M510 mouse

2013-04-06 Thread Bob J.
I have two questions about the Logitech M510 mouse:

This mouse has an edge-exposed wheel between the left right buttons. When I
rotate this wheel, there is no apparent effect. I am running Windows XP Pro
and using the current version of NVDA.

Question # 1. What effect should rotating this wheel have on the mouse pointer
and is this effect produced only when the wheel is depressed?

I have searched the web for an electronic copy of a user manual for this mouse
and the only one I have found is in .pdf format and is locked up tight!

Question # 2. Is an accessible copy of the manual for this mouse available
anywhere?

Is there a resistance cable made to use a cd player hooked to your sound card
to transfer the music to the computer? I remember such a cable for audio use in
the late 1960s. I do not remember what impedance would be required to match for
the mic input from an ear phone output.

Here is my attempt to squash some inaccurate information!

All of these files play properly, one after the other, on my current Digital

Hi,
You need to create a folder named audio+podcasts without the quotes. Place
it in your dtb folder on the flash drive. The name of the folder must be
exactly as written with a plus sign and not the word plus. Good luck!

Tom,

Detailed answers usually are given in response to detailed questions.

You asked how to put ... audio books in a folder in a different order?

That general question has been answered in general terms.

You didn't specify what kind of different order you desire! Do you want
the folders/files ordered by name or by date or by size? How are these
folders/files ordered currently? what do you want to accomplish by changing
their current order?

It is easier to provide specific assistance if we know your current
conditions and exactly how you wish to change those conditions.

Any files in any folder are sorted/arranged by one of the column headings,
for example, name, file type, date saved, etc.

Use the JAWS cursor to click on the column heading that represents the
ordering you prefer. You can switch between ascending order and descending
order by clicking the column heading once more.

To rearrange the order in which files are sorted by name, you can rename the
files; for example, add numeric prefixes to existing file names. Remember
that the numbers 10 and 100 will be sorted after 1 and before 2 so leading
zeroes may be necessary, for example, 001, 002, etc.

Janet,

Goto the JFW menu bar and open the utilities menu

Select the configuration manager

That will open the default.jcf configuration file within the configuration
manager

Go to the configuration manager's menu bar and open the set options menu

From that menu list, select the user options

Tab through the options until you hear typing echo and whatever is the current
setting

This will be a list of radio buttons from which you can turn off keyboard echo!

Then find the OK button and exit all levels in the normal manner.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Blank Lines between my email message sentences

2012-02-24 Thread Bob J.
I sometimes compose an e-mail message in notepad and then copy and paste that
text into my Outlook Express to send it. I have noticed that, very often, the
pasted text in the OE window has been reformatted to different line lengths
from the notepad document. Sometimes, that reformatting causes some very short
lines and some blank lines. When that happens, I edit the OE text before
sending the message so that the format appears more natural. I usually send
that message to myself as well as the intended recipient. I have noticed that
when I open the message from myself, the text has once again been reformatted
with some very short lines and some blank lines.

I believe those reformatting events are caused by differences in font size
between the origin and the target and/or differences in the width of the
display area between the source and the target.

I further believe that, unless you are attempting to impress the recipient with
your composition skills, the effect is not worth worrying over.

imho

When I open a downloaded book or magazine, I get two copies. Why is this

On certain rare occasions, I'll get only one copy, but not usually.

Well, if you go to:

I suspect it's only for malware,
However, perhaps the paid version supports more tasks,
Such as fire wall, virus protection,
Anyway, I told my friend, she should at least be running 2 program, one
malware, protective program, and one virus program.

(1) AntiVirus programme and one (1) spyware/ad-ware software in memory..that

No need to run MSE just run ad-aware for protection.
I seem to recall, that ad-aware is just a malware protection program.

Jacob,

IF your version of Windows came with the Sound Recorder software, do the
following.

Go to the Control Panel and select

Sounds and Multimedia Properties

Then, on the Audio Tab, under

Sound Recording

Select the Volume button

You will get a list of available sources for recording.

Select the source named What U Hear or
whatever is similar in your system.

When you have successfully exited from all of these levels, start the
Windows SoundRecorder software

Just wondering what, off-hand, any guys would recommend for just recording
the audio output of a windows machine to an audio track, without necessarily
having to actually use a physical microphone, a secondary recording unit,
etc., etc.?

As in, literally would just like to record all/any sounds the computer is
rendering.

I know there are various pieces of software out there, and do have two
external MP3 player units with their own built in microphones - don't like
that idea with regard to quality anyway - can record poorly using my phones
if wanted to, and do have another laptop, with an audio line-in, but just
wondering if there's a simpler way to just record what's happening on the PC
itsself..?

Also, since there are possible workarounds, and since this isn't too much of
an actual requirement/too necessary as such, I'd only really be interested
in free software/solutions.

Stay well

removing people who don't follow the guidelines. They are normally free to

here composing messages such as what you are reading right now. The fact is

making sure the information exchanged is correct and on topic. Some times we

Cross posting is the practice of sending messages to more than a single

the blind wood workers list in the same message. What might be on topic for

Malwarebytes is blocking access to the indicated IP addresses and just
happens to tell you what port a connection was trying to be made on. Since
both of the services that you mentioned are peer to peer networks, it is
very possible that those IP addresses that your computer is trying to

block them for your protection.

Re: [Blind-Computing] List folders and files in folders

2011-09-21 Thread Bob J.
I don't know what operating system you are using so I will assume Windows
and further assume that a DOS prompt is available.

Do what you must to get to the DOS prompt.

That will probably place you somewhere on your C drive.

If so, type

D: and press ENTER

That should place you on your D drive.

If so, but not at the root directory, type

cd\ and press ENTER.

Now, you should be at the root directory of your D drive.

Type the following

DIR /S MyMusic.txt and press ENTER

Wait until the DOS prompt reappears.

Now, you should have a file named MyMusic.txt in the root directory of your
D drive.

If you don't like the format of the info in that file, you can re-do the DIR
command with some switches to modify the format of the output.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Dos Command

2011-09-08 Thread Bob J.
Mike,

Different versions of Windows may have different versions of DOS and
therefore different DOS commands.

All of the following commands should be executed at any DOS prompt.

Incidently, if your JFW punctuation settings don't read all punctuation, you
might miss some important symbols in the following list.

Ordinarily, to go directly to the root directory of the current drive, type

cd\ and press ENTER.

Ordinarily, to change from one drive to another, type

D: and press ENTER.
(Substitute my D for the appropriate drive designator.)

To get a listing of the DOS commands that are specific to your version of
Windows, type

help and press ENTER.

To get more detailed info about individual DOS commands, type

help commandName and press ENTER, or

commandName /? and press ENTER.
(Substitute the name of any legitimate DOS command in place of my
commandName.)

To get the results of these queries stored within a text file for future
reference, use the following additional instruction with each.

 fileName.txt

as demonstrated in the following example.

help DOSHelp.txt and press ENTER.

You might want to use the name of the DOS command as the name of the text
file when/if storing the details of a single DOS command. Why? Because,
the file will contain only that which would have been displayed on screen
which does not include the name of the command being described since you
have already typed it.

PDF. I've got access to a Windows 7 64 bit laptop with JAWS 11 and 12, a
Verizon iPhone and an iPad first generation. I do not have a Bluetooth
keyboard for my i-devices, but if that is all I am missing to make some app
work, a trip to the apple store could be worked out.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Al,

I have been using this program for several months and as far as I have been
able to discover, there is no time limit for use of the free version.

As you have guessed, the paid version has some additional functionality.
Check their web site for details.

Re: [Blind-Computing] removing duplicate files

2011-07-30 Thread Bob J.
Janet,

You didn't say how many duplicated files you are needing to delete so, I'll
tell you an easy way to discover and delete a small number of duplicate
files.

Using the Search for Files Folders option, specify the full or partial
name of a file that you believe is duplicated somewhere on your available
drives and wait for Windows to present you with a list of what it could
find.

If a list is found, arrow up down within that list and delete whatever you
wish.

Deleting items within that list should also delete the file and/or folders
from their location on whichever drive they are located.

Re: [Blind-Computing] In correct order, please

2011-06-28 Thread Bob J.
Cliff,

I will assume that you mean that you are naming your files with numerals
instead of alpha characters. If that is correct, do the following.

20110101.txt for January 1, 2011
20110201.txt for February 1, 2011
...
20111201.txt for December 1, 2011.

The .txt is just for an example, use whatever extension is appropriate.

If all of your files will be dated within the 21st century, you need not
begin the file name with the 20.

Be sure to use two digits for the month and two digits for the day in every
date.

This file naming convention will maintain a correct chronological order for
the files within the folder.

[Blind-Computing] moving cassette tape recording to the computer

2011-05-11 Thread Bob J.
Desiree,

You referred to a turn table which usually implies a device used to play
phonograph records. This message originally referred to cassette tapes
which are played on a different device. Be careful not to confuse the
devices to which you refer.

In fact, if your computer has a sound card and you have applicable software,
you could copy recordings from either a cassette player or a turntable. To
connect these devices for making such copies, you will need a patch cord.
The appropriate patch cord will be one that can be connected to the audio
output jack(s) of your player at one end of the patch cord and plug into
your sound card at the other end of the patch cord. The microphone input
jack of your sound card can be used, however, the line input jack would be
a better choice if your sound card has one. If no line input jacdk is
available on your sound card, the patch cord probably should be attenuated
because the microphone input jack is usually subject to being overdriven by
a direct audio input.

Before obtaining an appropriate patch cord, you need to determine what type
of audio output jack(s) are provided on your player. Those jack(s) may or
may not be stereo jack(s). Also, you should determine similar facts about
the input jack(s) on your sound card. If your sound card has a line input
jack, it is probably a stereo jack. If you must use the microphone jack on
your sound card, that jack may or may not be a stereo jack.

If making copies of cassette tapes which have been recorded on the
talking-book, four-track type machines and then played on a typical stereo
playback player for making the copy, two tracks out of the four will be
played backwards. Recording software is available that can isolate the
tracks that are copied backwards and then reverse those tracks so that they
play properly.

Can a cord be used that connects to the microphone jack of your
computer? Would that make it pick up the sound? I've been wanting to
do this myself but don't feel like buying an expensive USB turn table
for the purpose. I know that I have a cord somewhere that has 3 plugs
on one end which are all color coded and then the other end has one
connector. I remember using it to get my stereo speakers to be the
output for my DVD player. I don't know if this makes sense because I'm
not really sure how to explain it, but I'd appreciate any help you
can give me.

The cord you will need is easily found at your local radio shack or any

Then you will need a program like gold wave. Then the fun begins because
then you will need to learn the tricks of the trade. Yes it is possible to
do what you want because I have done it in the past myself. It is not a
beginner level project but with some training and a bit of time to
practice
you could do it as well.

The cord is around $5 or maybe a couple bucks more but not much. Gold wave
is around $50 at this time if memory serves me. Think about it and let us

possible
like I said but it will take some time to figure out the program.

Re: [Blind-Computing] document files listed by date

2011-04-02 Thread Bob J.
Niamh,

First off, nobody has specified how you are displaying the files of which
you speak.

I will assume that you are displaying that list in the list view of
windows explorer.
If this assumption is inaccurate, all the following is possibly inaccurate.

At the top of the list of files is a line containing column headings.
The column headings can differ from one user's computer to another user's
computer because the user can select which file descriptors to be displayed.
You will need to use the JAWS CURSOR to navigate to these column headings.
When you have placed the JAWS CURSOR on the appropriate column heading,
click the left mouse button to sort the list by the values in that column.
Clicking a second time on that same heading will sort in the reverse order
from the first sorted order.

HINT: Sometimes, this only works properly when the JAWS CURSOR is on the
second or third character in the name of the column heading. So, for
example, if the column heading is modified, place the JAWS CURSOR on the
letter d in the word modified before clicking the left mouse button.

Re: [Blind-Computing] By the pound sign?

2011-03-29 Thread Bob J.
Hello Mike,

You are correct about the setting for properly reading dollar values.
Thanks for that info!

Maybe there is a setting for the proper pronunciation of the # sign. If so,
I don't know what it is and if not, I can't think of a simple way for the
user to correct that.

One way the user could eliminate the confusion about the meaning of the £
symbol is to create a dictionary entry for that symbol that would say
pounds sterling instead of just pounds.

Hi Bob;

Thank you very much for your reply. If you check the box, Speak Dollars, on
the Text Page of the default configuration manager, Jaws will speak
$100.00 as 100 dollars. At least it works this way for me. Thanks
again, take care.

  Hello Mike,

JAWS (at least all versions I have used) will always read the ASCII
character numbered 35 (#) the same way, no matter its context. Evidently,
FS doesn't see fit to make that pronunciation context sensitive.

I consider this condition to be similar to the condition where $100.00 is

Just one of those things that could be better but isn't.

The original question asked for the pound sign, not the pounds sign.

The pound sign is the miniature tic-tac-toe symbol which is under the
shifted numeral 3 on the numbers row above the qwerty keys. This symbol
translates to the word number when preceeding numeric characters and
translates to the word pound or pounds, as appropriate, when it follows
numeric characters.

The pounds symbol is used to denote British currency when reference is
  made
to the pound sterling. This symbol actually looks like a lower case
  letter
f with a base stroke similar to the bottom of a stylized upper case
letter
L.

If the original question had been more clearly defined, the confusion
  might
have been avoided.

Interesting note: Open notepad and generate the British pounds sign
using
the numeric key pad. Then, place the PC cursor over that symbol and see
what character number JFW identifies it with.

Sometimes you need the, £, sign. Your suggestion is an option but, it
can
also be mistaken as the, #, sign. The pounds sign looks like a fancy

Open windows explorer
Choose the list view for the mixed folder
Highlight the top entry
Route JAWSToPC

Move the JAWS cursor over to the heading titled TYPE

I am using JFW V9 with Win XP.

Hi All;

This is regarding XP users. My question is at the bottom.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/284893

The information below was received from the link above.

You receive a Not enough memory available to complete this operation error
message when you try to record a .wav file by using Sound Recorder

SYMPTOMS

When you try to record a .wav file by using Sound Recorder on a computer
that has more than 2 gigabytes (GB) of RAM, you receive the following error
message:

Not enough memory available to complete this operation. Quit one or more
applications to increase available memory, and then try again.

Note This problem only occurs when the amount of available physical memory
is more than 2 GB. See the More Information section for information about
how

to determine this value.

 CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a design limitation in Sound Recorder and not
because of any problem with the underlying multimedia.

 STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products
that are listed in the Applies to section.

My question is:

Does anyone know of a work around for this problem? All help will be
greatly appreciated. Thanks much. Take care.

Mike

Re: [Blind-Computing] Deleting corrupt directory

2010-05-30 Thread Bob J.
I don't know which version of Windows is being used by Al so I don't know if
a DOS prompt is available to him.

I do know that with WIN2K, a DOS prompt is available. With that DOS prompt,
the DEL command will delete a file and the RD command will remove a
directory (aka folder). These commands do work on a drive that is connected
via the USB port.

If your version of Windows does provide a DOS prompt, after you get to the
DOS prompt, type

CD G:

and press ENTER.

In the command shown above, replace the letter G with the correct drive
letter for your drive of interest.

Use the DIR command to get a list of files and folders.

Use the CD command to change to a desired folder.

Use the ATTRIB command to get/set the attributes of any file or folder.

Use the HELP command to get instructions on how to use any of these
commands.

If your computer boots while the USB disc is connected, it
 will perform the
disk checking first thing before Windows loads. In fact,
 one
 of the primary
operations during the boot process is checking your
 hardware
 integrity for
any errors and loads any software afterwards.
In your case, I believe that when Windows failed to
 complete
 the task, it
will be completed during the boot process regardless of

 Joshua, or others

Well I just ran a chkdsk on an external hard drive with a
corrupt file or directory and it ran through the first of
three steps just like the internal one did last evening.
However, it did not complete the last two steps as the
 note
below indicates it will, and it did identify 3 things it
deleted on its first pass. I have not rebooted my
 computer
this evening as I don't want to tie it up as I need to
 use
it. But, here is my question. When I reboot later how is
chkdsk going to finish the job like it did with my
 internal
drive last evening as it is hooked up through a USB port
 and
I don't believe they become active until Window's boots?
 I
did try unplugging the drive and reconnecting but still
can't delete that directory/file until the process
 completes
 itself.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Formula for Compound Interest

2009-10-26 Thread Bob J.
Bill,

You asked, Can anybody tell me how to enter the formula for compound
interest into the native onboard
calculator?

You do not specify, so, I'm going to assume that you are referring to the
calculator that comes with the Windows operating system.

Then you state, I'm having particular trouble with the power entry.

Before addressing your problem with raising a value to some power n, let's
examine your formula.

You propose that, Total = (P + (P*I)N)

where:
P is the principle
I is the interest rate
N is the number of years being calculated for (should be to the Nth
power)

Let's assume that P = 5000, I = 4% and N = 5 years.

That would mean 5000 times .04 = 200 in interest for 1 year.

Without compounding, that would be 1000 in interest for 5 years.

However, your formula would raise 200 to the power of 5 which is far more
than 200 times 5.

And then, you would add that very large number to the original principal.

I wish I could earn interest based on that formula!

The following seems more realistic:

Total = P times ((1+(I/100))^N) Note: the ^ character is to indicate the
exponent

Using the values suggested above, you get

Total = 5000 times ((1+(4/100))^5)

Total = 5000 times ((1.04)^5)

Total = 5000 times 1.2166529024

Total = 6083.264512

I will not discuss whether or not this is actually considered compound
interest.

Getting back to your problem with raising x to the power of y:

I have assumed that you are using the Windows Calculator but I will not
assume which version of Windows you are using. Instead, I will tell you
that I am using the calculator that comes with Windows 2000 Pro and using it
in what they call the scientific view. I have been unable to find a way
to create a formula into which various values may then be entered. So, to
solve this problem, I had to segment the solution as follows.

Clear the display by pressing the Escape key.

Type 1.04 and press the Enter key.

Press the Y key.

Type 5 and press the Enter key.

Press the * key.

Type 5000 and press the Enter key.

The solution appears.

Re: [Blind-Computing] how to downsize wav file and speech friendly CDburner

2009-09-10 Thread Bob J.
Down sizing a .wav file as a .wav file:

If your version of Windows (we don't know which version you are using
because you did not tell us) came with
Sound Recorder and your .wav file is not too large (we don't know how large
it is because you did not tell us), load the .wav file of interest into
Sound Recorder. If the .wav file is very, very large, this might take some
time during which you might think that your computer has locked up. Be
patient.

Note: Some folks may tell you that Sound Recorder is limited to files of
very short duration. Give it a try and see whether or not they are correct.

If and when the .wav file has loaded into sound recorder, follow these steps:

Open the File menu
Select Save As
Tab to and press the Change button
Tab to and open the Attributes combo box

There, you will be able to up and down arrow through several sets of
attributes from which you can select
attributes that will render a smaller file unless your file already consists
of the smallest attribute combination.

Below is a shortened sample of how the attributes list will probably be
presented.
Attributes: 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo 187 kb/sec
44.100 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo 172 kb/sec
48.000 kHz, 8 Bit, Mono 46 kb/sec
48.000 kHz, 8 Bit, Stereo 93 kb/sec
48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Mono 93 kb/sec

Choosing attributes with smaller numbers will usually render a smaller .wav
file. However, a smaller .wav file may not have sound quality as good as
the larger file.

After choosing the new attributes, press the appropriate buttons to exit the
dialogue and save the new version of the file. You might want to save the
new version under a different name to prevent overwriting the original file
until you decide if the new file is satisfactory.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Scanner question

2009-06-13 Thread Bob J.
If both scanners work correctly on your PC and both scanners work
incorrectly on your husband's PC then the problem is not with the
scanners.

The problem lies somewhere between the scanner and the videeo display on
your husband's PC.

I suggest comparing the optional settings in the scanner-related software
between those on your PC and those on your husband's PC. If no differences
exist there, compare the drivers for the scanner between both PC's. If no
differences exist there, compare the video drivers between both PC's. If no
differences exist there, the problem is probably hardware related with your
husband's PC.

Hi Bob,

What I mean is an adapter that will plug a hard drive that you've just
removed from your computer's case, into another computer's USB port without
any external chassis or boxes.

On one end, you have a USB plug, and on the other end, at the connectors
that one would see if they had a look inside the computer's case, and saw
the wires their hard drive was plugged into.

Under other circumstances, a person with an internal drive, who wanted to
use that drive outside of a computer's case would have to purchase or obtain
an external chassis the person would plug their hard drive into to accept
power from an external source other than the computer's power supply, and a
data ribbon to transfer data via the USB port.

Well, with these adapters, you don't need that case, and just set the drive
to the side of the computer, plug in the connections, and connect the drive
to the computer and start getting the data from it.

It's plug and play, so no need to install drivers or anything.

Not sure if that clears things up for you, I certainly know that I'm
confused. LOL.

Just to add my two cents here, there is also an adapter that will hook up an
internal drive, via it's IDE channel to the USB port on the computer that
will allow one to read the drive as is, without any need for an external
case.

I can get the information from my brother if anyone would like it.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Script error with compile

Victor,

Well, it does sound like something has been corrupted; however, it might be
in some other file other than the script file that you attempted to

problem might be like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Hi Bob,

What I did was press insert+F2 to open up script manager.

This brought up the Windows Live messenger.jss script file.

I pressed control+S to save and compile the script, and I then received a
message from Jaws that compile was complete, and then it reported the name
of the window again.

At that point, I pressed the keystroke of control+shift+D to open up the
default script file, and jaws reported that the name of the window was
default.jss, followed by the word edit.

At this point, I pressed control+S to save and compile and I was faced with
that error.

The dinky part is that I wasn't doing anything, or making any modifications
to the script files, save for re-compiling them.

What prompted me to do this was I received a message from a friend, and when
I went to read the message they had sent me via Windows Live, Jaws kept
reporting that it wasn't in any open chat window, every time I pressed any
of the numbers on the number row, in combination with the alt key.

I also wasn't able to hear the typing sound I was clearly able to do before
that, and the typing notification from Jaws that I could get before.

At this point, I assumed that the script file had gotten corrupted or
something, and I did what I've always been advised to do, that being
re-compile the scripts, as a fail safe.

Well, this time, it didn't work, and I received the error on the compiling
of the default file.

Hope this better helps you understand my predicament.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Script error with compile

2009-03-25 Thread Bob J.
Victor,

The unknown variable error message usually indicates that you have made
reference to a variable name somewhere in your code that has not been
properly declared prior to that reference.

It could also be caused by some incorrect syntax in your code in the
vicinity of the reference to that variable.

One confusing issue in your message: You say the code compiled and then you
say that it didn't. Some clarification of that issue might be useful.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Script error with compile

Hi Folks,

I just tried to compile the Windows Live Messenger script, and it managed to
compile ok, but when I opened the default file to compile that, it gave me
the following error.

Anyone know what it means?

Compile Error
 Unknown variable gstrInputLang

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [Blind-Computing] microphone problems

2009-03-24 Thread Bob J.
Michael,

You said that you turned up the volume on the microphone but you didn't say
whether or not you selected the microphone as the input device.

Also, do you have your Radio Shack microphone plugged into the correct input
jack on your sound card? In most cases, the Line In jack is not the correct
jack for plugging in the microphone.

Uhm, with all due respect, one does not need to obtain contracts or
 anything
like that, especially since the PDA's you spoke of don't have that
 capability.

You can't call someone using one of Freedom Scientifics' products, nor
 with
 Humanware's products.

So, even if you purchase a cell phone without any service, along with 200
 or
299, depending on where you're from for Talks or Mobile Speaks, the price
still comes out cheaper, and you don't have to worry about having to send
 it
into FS or Humanware for repair, since anyone who repairs cell phones can
repair the one you bought, whereas if you send out your specialty product
 to
the corner store to get it repaired, guess what, you're out of luck.

Like I said in my original message, even if you purchase a cell phone,
 with
or without an actual calling package, you're still paying a heck of a lot
less then you would if you bought a Pack Mate, or anything else along
 those
 lines.

I'm sorry if that irks you, but it's the truth.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Recovering deleted files

2009-01-31 Thread Bob J.
Ken,

Open a DOS window and type the following followed by the ENTER key:

RECOVER /?

Be sure to include a space character before the slash character and a
question mark immediately after the slash character.

If the RECOVER command is available on your OS, that line should give you
instructions on how to use it.

If the RECOVER command is not available, type HELP and press the ENTER key.
That should give you a list of all available commands.

Look for something like UNDELETE.

Hello everyone,

I accidentally deleted a couple of folders on an external hard drive. These
were large folders so they were not sent to the recycle bin. These folders
had hundreds, if not thousands of small files.

I have not written anything to this external hard drive since I did this.

Is there a program out there that I could use to recover these files from
this external hard drive?

Thanks,

Re: [Blind-Computing] Retreiving files from a password protected harddrive

2009-01-09 Thread Bob J.
Rick,

Experiment with the following...

DOSPrompt
C:\Documents and Settings\Administratorcd\
C:\attrib /?
Displays or changes file attributes.
ATTRIB [+R | -R] [+A | -A ] [+S | -S] [+H | -H] [[drive:] [path] filename]
[/S [/D]]
+ Sets an attribute.
- Clears an attribute.
R Read-only file attribute.
A Archive file attribute.
S System file attribute.
H Hidden file attribute.
/S Processes matching files in the current folder
and all subfolders.
/D Processes folders as well.
C:\
C:\xcopy /?
Copies files and directory trees.
XCOPY source [destination] [/A | /M] [/D[:date]] [/P] [/S [/E]] [/V] [/W]
[/C] [/I] [/Q] [/F] [/L] [/H] [/R] [/T] [/U]
[/K] [/N] [/O] [/X] [/Y] [/-Y] [/Z]
[/EXCLUDE:file1[+file2][+file3]...]
source Specifies the file(s) to copy.
destination Specifies the location and/or name of new files.
/A Copies only files with the archive attribute set,
doesn't change the attribute.
/M Copies only files with the archive attribute set,
turns off the archive attribute.
/D:m-d-y Copies files changed on or after the specified date.
If no date is given, copies only those files whose
source time is newer than the destination time.
/EXCLUDE:file1[+file2][+file3]...
Specifies a list of files containing strings. When any of the
strings match any part of the absolute path of the file to be
copied, that file will be excluded from being copied. For
example, specifying a string like \obj\ or .obj will exclude
all files underneath the directory obj or all files with the
.obj extension respectively.
/P Prompts you before creating each destination file.
/S Copies directories and subdirectories except empty ones.
/E Copies directories and subdirectories, including empty ones.
Same as /S /E. May be used to modify /T.
/V Verifies each new file.
/W Prompts you to press a key before copying.
/C Continues copying even if errors occur.
/I If destination does not exist and copying more than one file,
assumes that destination must be a directory.
/Q Does not display file names while copying.
/F Displays full source and destination file names while copying.
/L Displays files that would be copied.
/H Copies hidden and system files also.
/R Overwrites read-only files.
/T Creates directory structure, but does not copy files. Does not
include empty directories or subdirectories. /T /E includes
empty directories and subdirectories.
/UCopies only files that already exist in destination.
/K Copies attributes. Normal Xcopy will reset read-only
attributes.
/N Copies using the generated short names.
/O Copies file ownership and ACL information.
/X Copies file audit settings (implies /O).
/Y Suppresses prompting to confirm you want to overwrite an
existing destination file.
/-Y Causes prompting to confirm you want to overwrite an
existing destination file.
/Z Copies networked files in restartable mode.
The switch /Y may be preset in the COPYCMD environment variable.
This may be overridden with /-Y on the command line.
C:\xcopy /?

Moving to a newer OS on an old machine is pointless if the current OS

Re: [Blind-Computing] Assigning a program to open a text file.

2008-11-27 Thread Bob J.
Mark,

I am using Win2K with JFW6.20.65u but the process you describe works for me.

Suggestion:

When you have selected HJPad.exe and you are returned to the list of
programs to use, examine that list to see if HJPad has been added to the
list. It should be there. Make sure that it is the highlighted item on the
list. Then check the always use button.

I'm guessing that when you return to the list of programs after selecting
HJPad that it has been added to the list but is not yet highlighted.

Best wishes,

Bob

Hi Negoslav Sabev,
Sadly I was unable to accomplish what I wanted to do. I am still
looking for the answer.
When I select a text file and simulate a right click on it a menu
opens. I choose open with. I am next given a list of twelve programs along
with an option to look for more. So, I look for more programs after going
through a couple menus I am faced with a list of 71 programs. One of these
programs is called freedom scientific. Under this is Jaws (three versions).
I select the newest version and press the letter h for HjPad. I have to
press it twice. Then I am on HjPad. Next I tab to OK and press enter. Now, I
am back on a screen that has the original twelve programs and the box that
asks if I always want to use this program to open the file. It is checked.
Then I click OK. the screen goes away and I am stuck with wordPad opening my
text files just like before I started the process. I feel like there is
something wrong. I am thinking that HjPad should be added to the list of
twelve on that first screen but how to get it there is another question.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Cd track list

2008-11-18 Thread Bob J.
How about using the find and replace function? Have it find the string of
characters that you want to delete and have it replace that string with an
empty string. You can tell it to replace all occurances.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Cd track list

Hello, I am burning some CD's for a friend. I want to print a track list
for each CD. When I open an album folder, I get a list of each track
preceeded by the track number.

And this is fine. But sometimes when I open an album folder, the name of
the Cd is listed before each track number and title. And this gets a little
redundant having to listen to JAWS read the album title before each track
number and song title. I copy and paste the track list into Word Pad and
then go line by line highlighting and deleting the title, which is pretty
time consuming and tedious. Is there a function in Word Pad that would
allow me to more easily delete the album title from each line?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve Crews

Re: [Blind-Computing] Cross Posting

2008-10-14 Thread Bob J.
Bob,

Please describe that which would be considered a Cross Post. I'm curious
because it appears to me that you have just created one. Also, I seem to
remember seeing what I thought were some other cross posts recently.
Perhaps my idea of what comprises a cross post is in error.

Thanks in advance for your clarification!

Hi
I am looking for a PDF to audio converter. I am part of a sighted class
and we all received our instructional materials on CD PDF files. The class
was highly disappointed that the CD's were not audio CD's. I explained that
there audio converters that will convert the PDF to audio and then burn it
to disk. Now, they want me to give them the information on the program. Its
been a good year since I heard about the program on an E-Mail list. Any
ideas on which program would do this job for these folks?
Thank you in advance four your help.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Computer speaker question

2008-09-26 Thread Bob J.
Mike,

From your description, my guess is that the humming sound that you are
hearing is known as a 60-cycle hum which comes from the frequency of your
home's electrical circuits. Have you re-arranged any of your computer
system's components recently or added some electrical device to the circuit
into which your sub-woofer is connected? If the sub-woofer's 110-volt plug
is not designed to prevent reversing the way it is plugged into the
electrical outlet, try reversing that plug and see if that has any effect.
You could also try plugging your sub-woofer's 110-volt power cord into an
outlet that is on a different household circuit.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Computer speaker question

Hi All,

I am using a 2.1 speaker system. With the computer on or off I get a
humming/buzzing sound through the speakers when the speaker volume is turned
all the way down. If I unplug the speakers from the computer it doesn't
stop. The only way to stop this humming/buzzing sound is to unplug the sub
woofer from the 110 volt outlet. This sound just started happening and I
don't know what is causing it. Has anyone ever had this type of problem?
Can someone tell me what is causing this humming/buzzing sound? I am
wondering if I have a problem or if this is something that happens from time
to time. All advice and information will be greatly appreciated. Thank you
all very much.

Hi. No, I think it's a false positive. This is why I'm not keen on AVG to be
honest, as to me it flags genuine programmes as actual viruses, and this is
one good example, flagging GoldWave to be a virus. Avast won't do this.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] I found a Trojan in Goldwave!

 Hello everyone,

This kind of freaked me out.

I just downloaded and installed the new Security updates for Windows XP
this morning. As they were being installed, I walked away from my computer.
When I got back, my AVG Anti Virus had popped up saying it had found a
Trojan Virus.

I had also updated my AVG software at about 5am, but had not run a
computer
scan.

I moved the virus to the virus vault and then got it's name and what
program it was in. Turns out it was in Gold Wave. Looks like it would have
been activated if I ever uninstalled Gold Wave.

Here's the name of the virus and where it was located:

 Trojan Horse Downloader.banload.wpr
 c:\program files\Goldwave\unstall.exe

 Scan your computers!!

Re: [Blind-Computing] how do you copy the sender'sinformationfromanemail

2008-05-29 Thread Bob J.
I like to do things the plain and simple way. That way, you don't have to
remember so many special key strokes and methods.

If I want anything from an e-mail message, here is what I do.

1. I open the message of interest.
2. I open the file menu.
3. I select the Save As... option
4. I save the message as a .txt file.
5. I open the .txt file with NotePad.
6. I can edit or copy any part of the message including the header and the
body.

Sounds like a lot of work but it isn't really and it always works.

you can do control F and arrow down to the header info and when you hear the
from area right over to you hear the sign the email start right after that
first sign and ends before the last sign. To copy it to the clipboard,
hold the shift key while moving the right arrow key to the last character of
the email address. If you do the shift-end key you will include the signs
in the email address which you would have to delete before using, after it's
all selected then press control C it is now copied to your clipboard for you
to paste it whereever you want it and you paste it by pressing control V

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Weird typing problem

Hi!
Recently I started to have a weird problem while typing; suddenly some signs
get added just like that to the text; those are mainly accents or inverted
exclaims or such weird signs not much used or even hardly readable by JAWS;
and I don't even have to be close to the keys to press them by accident,
they just get added at random. Any idea what would cause this and how to fix
it?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes, it is completely free. I've been using it for about 5 years. I
 haven't
liked the newer versions however, so I went back when I got my new
 computer

Again, the only difference between the free version and the one that
 costs,
is that with the free version, you can only record 2 stations at once.

 Hi Linda,

 It's called station Ripper.

I love it. I've used it for a couple of years. Just find an internet
 station
you want to record and it records each individual song in an mp3
 format.

 http://www.stationripper.com

After you have run the program for a while, each song will be in a
 file
 on
your hard drive. To get to it, click on My Computer, click on your C
 drive,
click on Program files, click on Ratajik Software, click on Station
 Ripper,
click on Output, and then the files for each station you have ripped
 will
 be
 there.

With the free program you can record 2 stations at once. If you pay
 for
 it,
I think you can record up to about 300 stations at one time.

 Enjoy.

I'm using a PTR1 recorder, and want to record lectures that anyone can
listen to on a CD player. I was told by tech support to use audio CD's, not
data CD's or CD's that can do both. But when I go to Comp USA, or Circuit
City, they don't know what I'm talking about. If I use data discs, daisy
format gets recorded automatically. Evidently, the recorder recognizes audio
CD's whatever they are. What is the correct name of such a disc, and what
store or internet company would know what I'm talking about?

kind of CD's.
Any help to straighten up this confusion would be appreciated.

Hi Folks,

I am running Windows XP, with Jaws 7, Goldwave 5.20 and Winamp 5.35.

I have downloaded an OGG file that I wish to convert to MP3.

I have and am using Goldwave to convert it, and I get an error that reads
the file contains 2 or more incompatible streams.

I thought to myself that this couldn't be right, as the file is not being
streamed to my computer, as I have already downloaded the file.

I have used both the batch conversion utility of GoldWave, and the manual
utility, and at each instance, I get that error.

I can't even open the file using GoldWave, as the error chimes in as soon as
I try to open the file.

Funny enough, it plays no problem with Winamp, but then again, Winamp has a
ton of plug-ins and isn't particular as to what it plays.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what this could be?

Any help would be appreciated.

Victor

Re: [Blind-Computing] Audio Software Issue

2007-11-25 Thread Bob J.
Victor,

I believe that Gold Wave uses its own internal format for processing files.
Once recorded, you can probably save the file into any format supported by
Gold Wave.

I haven't actually done this but, you would start Gold Wave recording using
the input from What I Hear setting in the volume control. Then start
playing the file with WinAmp. You would need to be sure that Jaws would not
speak during the recording because that would be recorded also unless Jaws
is using an output device other than the sound card that plays the music
files.

Good luck!

Could you give me step-by-step instructions outlining how to do this sort of

I would also ask, if I'm recording the thing as it is playing, why would I
need to convert it after I've recorded it?

Why not record it as an MP3 file format right off the outset?

Is there something that will not allow me or the program to do this?

Ok. Are you actually having trouble finding the file to be able to open
 it,
or does it just seem blank after you open it?

Since it sounds like you can open the file, but that it just 'appears'
blank, the first thing I'd suggest is that you make sure that the WordPad
window is in fact maximised - Alt + Space bar, then the X key.

If that still doesn't make a difference, then you can also try saving it
from WordPad to a different file format like a text file, and then try
reading it again just in case the problem is specifically to do with
 reading
in WordPad or something, and then you'd at least know that there was in
 fact
 text content in that file.

Hi, Bob. I did go to the bottom of the file and found blank text. Somehow
part of the file got moved to microsoft word instead. I also get this
dialog that says wordpad unavailable. Is there a way to btring wordpad
back? Thanks for your help in advance.

 Rosemarie,

Is there any chance that the file is an image file instead of a text file?
I believe image files are not viewable with JFW. Also, have you tried
jumping to the bottom of the document to see if there is any text down
 there?

Hi, Jacob. I can open the file but it appears blank on the screen. I
 even
maximized wordpad and the screen is still blank.

Hi, everyone. I just got my final assignment back from the health
2instructor at Hadley. I wanted to go over some of the questions she
 made
comments on but when I tried to find the file, it wasn't there. I'm
 pretty
sure I didn't delete it. I'm not sure why wordpad is showing a blank
 screen
when the file is supposedly called up. If someone could please tell me
 how
to find thisfile, I would appreciate it very much.

Many thanks in advance. I hope you all had a very happy Thanksgiving.

 Rosemarie

Re: [Blind-Computing] Inter Video Win DVD Question

2007-11-22 Thread Bob J.
Donnie,

I don't know exactly where you are when you are seeing three WinDVD programs
but you might be looking at three shortcuts to the same program.

As for the volume control--try holding down the shift key while hitting the
up-arrow or down-arrow keys. Be aware that the response to those key
combinations might be a little slow.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Inter Video Win DVD Question

Hey Guys Gals,

I have found a program on my computer called Inter Video Win DVD. When I
go into my programs, I
see that there is Inter Video Win DVD, Inter Video Win DVD 2 and Inter Video
Win DVD 3. I know
absolutely nothing about this program except that it seems to play my DVD's
much better than
Windows Media Player. Could someone please tell me which of the 3 programs
I should use and also
how to turn the volume up and down in this program. Thanks for any help
that I can get on this
subject.
