[Blind-Computing] Chirp Software
Chirp software is used to program many makes and models of amateur radio transceivers and reportedly works very well for sighted computer users. I have downloaded that software and installed it on my Windows XP machine where I am also running JFW v10. I have found the Chirp software to be barely accessible on my XP machine with this version of JFW and I am wondering if anyone out there is using the Chirp software with some measure of success. If so, please share your details for success! T I A Bob AD8RJ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
[Blind-Computing] Logitech M510 mouse
I have two questions about the Logitech M510 mouse: This mouse has an edge-exposed wheel between the left right buttons. When I rotate this wheel, there is no apparent effect. I am running Windows XP Pro and using the current version of NVDA. Question # 1. What effect should rotating this wheel have on the mouse pointer and is this effect produced only when the wheel is depressed? I have searched the web for an electronic copy of a user manual for this mouse and the only one I have found is in .pdf format and is locked up tight! Question # 2. Is an accessible copy of the manual for this mouse available anywhere? T I A Bob For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/

Re: [Blind-Computing] Blank Lines between my email message sentences
I sometimes compose an e-mail message in notepad and then copy and paste that text into my Outlook Express to send it. I have noticed that, very often, the pasted text in the OE window has been reformatted to different line lengths from the notepad document. Sometimes, that reformatting causes some very short lines and some blank lines. When that happens, I edit the OE text before sending the message so that the format appears more natural. I usually send that message to myself as well as the intended recipient. I have noticed that when I open the message from myself, the text has once again been reformatted with some very short lines and some blank lines. I believe those reformatting events are caused by differences in font size between the origin and the target and/or differences in the width of the display area between the source and the target. I further believe that, unless you are attempting to impress the recipient with your composition skills, the effect is not worth worrying over. imho Bob - Original Message - From: Mike Barbara mb69ma...@charter.net To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Thursday, February 23, 2012 8:12 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Blank Lines between my email message sentences Hi Alan, I don't have an answer to your question, would like to know myself but, sometimes my messages will contain blank lines other times, not. Re: [Blind-Computing] Free, simple software to just record PC activity to audio
Jacob, IF your version of Windows came with the Sound Recorder software, do the following. Go to the Control Panel and select Sounds and Multimedia Properties Then, on the Audio Tab, under Sound Recording Select the Volume button You will get a list of available sources for recording. Select the source named What U Hear or whatever is similar in your system. When you have successfully exited from all of these levels, start the Windows SoundRecorder software that came with your system. hth Bob - Original Message - From: Jacob Kruger jac...@mailzone.co.za To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Tuesday, November 08, 2011 12:14 AM Subject: [Blind-Computing] Free, simple software to just record PC activity to audio Just wondering what, off-hand, any guys would recommend for just recording the audio output of a windows machine to an audio track, without necessarily having to actually use a physical microphone, a secondary recording unit, etc., etc.? As in, literally would just like to record all/any sounds the computer is rendering. I know there are various pieces of software out there, and do have two external MP3 player units with their own built in microphones - don't like that idea with regard to quality anyway - can record poorly using my phones if wanted to, and do have another laptop, with an audio line-in, but just wondering if there's a simpler way to just record what's happening on the PC itsself..? Also, since there are possible workarounds, and since this isn't too much of an actual requirement/too necessary as such, I'd only really be interested in free software/solutions. I don't know what operating system you are using so I will assume Windows and further assume that a DOS prompt is available. Do what you must to get to the DOS prompt. That will probably place you somewhere on your C drive. If so, type D: and press ENTER That should place you on your D drive. If so, but not at the root directory, type cd\ and press ENTER. Now, you should be at the root directory of your D drive. Type the following DIR /S MyMusic.txt and press ENTER Wait until the DOS prompt reappears. Now, you should have a file named MyMusic.txt in the root directory of your D drive. If you don't like the format of the info in that file, you can re-do the DIR command with some switches to modify the format of the output. hth Bob - Original Message - From: Lennie lenni...@mchsi.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Wednesday, September 21, 2011 1:46 PM Subject: [Blind-Computing] List folders and files in folders hi, I have a second hard drive with all my MP3 files on it. Re: [Blind-Computing] Dos Command
Mike, Different versions of Windows may have different versions of DOS and therefore different DOS commands. All of the following commands should be executed at any DOS prompt. Incidently, if your JFW punctuation settings don't read all punctuation, you might miss some important symbols in the following list. Ordinarily, to go directly to the root directory of the current drive, type cd\ and press ENTER. Ordinarily, to change from one drive to another, type D: and press ENTER. (Substitute my D for the appropriate drive designator.) To get a listing of the DOS commands that are specific to your version of Windows, type help and press ENTER. To get more detailed info about individual DOS commands, type help commandName and press ENTER, or commandName /? and press ENTER. (Substitute the name of any legitimate DOS command in place of my commandName.) To get the results of these queries stored within a text file for future reference, use the following additional instruction with each. fileName.txt as demonstrated in the following example. help DOSHelp.txt and press ENTER. You might want to use the name of the DOS command as the name of the text file when/if storing the details of a single DOS command. Why? Because, the file will contain only that which would have been displayed on screen which does not include the name of the command being described since you have already typed it. hth Bob - Original Message - From: Mike Barbara mb69ma...@charter.net To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Thursday, September 08, 2011 10:43 AM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Dos Command Hi Again David, Jacob, Nikolay, Do you guys know where I can get a list of Dos commands? Re: [Blind-Computing] In correct order, please
Cliff, I will assume that you mean that you are naming your files with numerals instead of alpha characters. If that is correct, do the following. 20110101.txt for January 1, 2011 20110201.txt for February 1, 2011 ... 20111201.txt for December 1, 2011. The .txt is just for an example, use whatever extension is appropriate. If all of your files will be dated within the 21st century, you need not begin the file name with the 20. Be sure to use two digits for the month and two digits for the day in every date. [Blind-Computing] moving cassette tape recording to the computer
Desiree, You referred to a turn table which usually implies a device used to play phonograph records. This message originally referred to cassette tapes which are played on a different device. Be careful not to confuse the devices to which you refer. In fact, if your computer has a sound card and you have applicable software, you could copy recordings from either a cassette player or a turntable. To connect these devices for making such copies, you will need a patch cord. The appropriate patch cord will be one that can be connected to the audio output jack(s) of your player at one end of the patch cord and plug into your sound card at the other end of the patch cord. The microphone input jack of your sound card can be used, however, the line input jack would be a better choice if your sound card has one. If no line input jacdk is available on your sound card, the patch cord probably should be attenuated because the microphone input jack is usually subject to being overdriven by a direct audio input. Before obtaining an appropriate patch cord, you need to determine what type of audio output jack(s) are provided on your player. Those jack(s) may or may not be stereo jack(s). Also, you should determine similar facts about the input jack(s) on your sound card. If your sound card has a line input jack, it is probably a stereo jack. If you must use the microphone jack on your sound card, that jack may or may not be a stereo jack. If making copies of cassette tapes which have been recorded on the talking-book, four-track type machines and then played on a typical stereo playback player for making the copy, two tracks out of the four will be played backwards. Recording software is available that can isolate the tracks that are copied backwards and then reverse those tracks so that they play properly. hth Bob - Original Message - From: Oudinot turtlepowe...@gmail.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Wednesday, May 11, 2011 10:50 AM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] moving cassette tape recording to the computer Can a cord be used that connects to the microphone jack of your computer? Re: [Blind-Computing] document files listed by date
Niamh, First off, nobody has specified how you are displaying the files of which you speak. I will assume that you are displaying that list in the list view of windows explorer. If this assumption is inaccurate, all the following is possibly inaccurate. At the top of the list of files is a line containing column headings. The column headings can differ from one user's computer to another user's computer because the user can select which file descriptors to be displayed. You will need to use the JAWS CURSOR to navigate to these column headings. When you have placed the JAWS CURSOR on the appropriate column heading, click the left mouse button to sort the list by the values in that column. Clicking a second time on that same heading will sort in the reverse order from the first sorted order. HINT: Sometimes, this only works properly when the JAWS CURSOR is on the second or third character in the name of the column heading. So, for example, if the column heading is modified, place the JAWS CURSOR on the letter d in the word modified before clicking the left mouse button. hth Bob - Original Message - From: Niamh niam.mcke...@gmail.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Saturday, April 02, 2011 1:11 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] document files listed by date hi Mike, well i think my brain must have frozen. Re: [Blind-Computing] By the pound sign?
Hello Mike, You are correct about the setting for properly reading dollar values. Thanks for that info! Maybe there is a setting for the proper pronunciation of the # sign. If so, I don't know what it is and if not, I can't think of a simple way for the user to correct that. One way the user could eliminate the confusion about the meaning of the £ symbol is to create a dictionary entry for that symbol that would say pounds sterling instead of just pounds. Re: [Blind-Computing] Deleting corrupt directory
I don't know which version of Windows is being used by Al so I don't know if a DOS prompt is available to him. I do know that with WIN2K, a DOS prompt is available. With that DOS prompt, the DEL command will delete a file and the RD command will remove a directory (aka folder). These commands do work on a drive that is connected via the USB port. If your version of Windows does provide a DOS prompt, after you get to the DOS prompt, type CD G: and press ENTER. In the command shown above, replace the letter G with the correct drive letter for your drive of interest. Use the DIR command to get a list of files and folders. Use the CD command to change to a desired folder. Use the ATTRIB command to get/set the attributes of any file or folder. Use the HELP command to get instructions on how to use any of these commands. hth Bob - Original Message - From: Rick Justice ricjust...@jaws-users.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Sunday, May 30, 2010 6:48 AM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Deleting corrupt directory Hi Al, I don't know if dos works with USB, but if it does, you might try using it with the del command. Re: [Blind-Computing] Formula for Compound Interest
Bill, You asked, Can anybody tell me how to enter the formula for compound interest into the native onboard calculator? You do not specify, so, I'm going to assume that you are referring to the calculator that comes with the Windows operating system. Then you state, I'm having particular trouble with the power entry. Before addressing your problem with raising a value to some power n, let's examine your formula. You propose that, Total = (P + (P*I)N) where: P is the principle I is the interest rate N is the number of years being calculated for (should be to the Nth power) Let's assume that P = 5000, I = 4% and N = 5 years. That would mean 5000 times .04 = 200 in interest for 1 year. Without compounding, that would be 1000 in interest for 5 years. However, your formula would raise 200 to the power of 5 which is far more than 200 times 5. And then, you would add that very large number to the original principal. I wish I could earn interest based on that formula! The following seems more realistic: Total = P times ((1+(I/100))^N) Note: the ^ character is to indicate the exponent Using the values suggested above, you get Total = 5000 times ((1+(4/100))^5) Total = 5000 times ((1.04)^5) Total = 5000 times 1.2166529024 Total = 6083.264512 I will not discuss whether or not this is actually considered compound interest. Getting back to your problem with raising x to the power of y: I have assumed that you are using the Windows Calculator but I will not assume which version of Windows you are using. Instead, I will tell you that I am using the calculator that comes with Windows 2000 Pro and using it in what they call the scientific view. I have been unable to find a way to create a formula into which various values may then be entered. So, to solve this problem, I had to segment the solution as follows. Clear the display by pressing the Escape key. Type 1.04 and press the Enter key. Press the Y key. Type 5 and press the Enter key. Press the * key. Type 5000 and press the Enter key. The solution appears. hth Bob - Original Message - From: Bill Gallik billgal...@centurytel.net To: Blind Computing blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Monday, October 26, 2009 2:05 PM Subject: [Blind-Computing] Formula for Compound Interest Can anybody tell me how to enter the formula for compound interest into the native onboard calculator? Re: [Blind-Computing] how to downsize wav file and speech friendly CDburner
Down sizing a .wav file as a .wav file: If your version of Windows (we don't know which version you are using because you did not tell us) came with Sound Recorder and your .wav file is not too large (we don't know how large it is because you did not tell us), load the .wav file of interest into Sound Recorder. If the .wav file is very, very large, this might take some time during which you might think that your computer has locked up. Be patient. Note: Some folks may tell you that Sound Recorder is limited to files of very short duration. Give it a try and see whether or not they are correct. If and when the .wav file has loaded into sound recorder, follow these steps: Open the File menu Select Save As Tab to and press the Change button Tab to and open the Attributes combo box There, you will be able to up and down arrow through several sets of attributes from which you can select attributes that will render a smaller file unless your file already consists of the smallest attribute combination. Below is a shortened sample of how the attributes list will probably be presented. Attributes: 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo 187 kb/sec 44.100 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo 172 kb/sec 48.000 kHz, 8 Bit, Mono 46 kb/sec 48.000 kHz, 8 Bit, Stereo 93 kb/sec 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Mono 93 kb/sec Choosing attributes with smaller numbers will usually render a smaller .wav file. However, a smaller .wav file may not have sound quality as good as the larger file. After choosing the new attributes, press the appropriate buttons to exit the dialogue and save the new version of the file. You might want to save the new version under a different name to prevent overwriting the original file until you decide if the new file is satisfactory. hth Bob - Original Message - From: G.BRL g.brai...@sympatico.ca To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Thursday, September 10, 2009 6:22 AM Subject: [Blind-Computing] how to downsize wav file and speech friendly CDburner Greeting all, 1. If both scanners work correctly on your PC and both scanners work incorrectly on your husband's PC then the problem is not with the scanners. The problem lies somewhere between the scanner and the videeo display on your husband's PC. If no differences exist there, compare the drivers for the scanner between both PC's. If no differences exist there, compare the video drivers between both PC's. On one end, you have a USB plug, and on the other end, at the connectors that one would see if they had a look inside the computer's case, and saw the wires their hard drive was plugged into. Under other circumstances, a person with an internal drive, who wanted to use that drive outside of a computer's case would have to purchase or obtain an external chassis the person would plug their hard drive into to accept power from an external source other than the computer's power supply, and a data ribbon to transfer data via the USB port. Well, with these adapters, you don't need that case, and just set the drive to the side of the computer, plug in the connections, and connect the drive to the computer and start getting the data from it. It's plug and play, so no need to install drivers or anything. Not sure if that clears things up for you, I certainly know that I'm confused. LOL. Re: [Blind-Computing] Script error with compile
Victor, Well, it does sound like something has been corrupted; however, it might be in some other file other than the script file that you attempted to recompile. The variable in question may have been formerly declared in a header file or an include file that is now corrupted. Finding that problem might be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Good luck! Bob - Original Message - From: Victor victor.gouv...@rogers.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Wednesday, March 25, 2009 7:41 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Script error with compile Hi Bob, What I did was press insert+F2 to open up script manager. This brought up the Windows Live messenger.jss script file. I pressed control+S to save and compile the script, and I then received a message from Jaws that compile was complete, and then it reported the name of the window again. At that point, I pressed the keystroke of control+shift+D to open up the default script file, and jaws reported that the name of the window was default.jss, followed by the word edit. At this point, I pressed control+S to save and compile and I was faced with that error. The dinky part is that I wasn't doing anything, or making any modifications to the script files, save for re-compiling them. What prompted me to do this was I received a message from a friend, and when I went to read the message they had sent me via Windows Live, Jaws kept reporting that it wasn't in any open chat window, every time I pressed any of the numbers on the number row, in combination with the alt key. I also wasn't able to hear the typing sound I was clearly able to do before that, and the typing notification from Jaws that I could get before. At this point, I assumed that the script file had gotten corrupted or something, and I did what I've always been advised to do, that being re-compile the scripts, as a fail safe. Well, this time, it didn't work, and I received the error on the compiling of the default file. Hope this better helps you understand my predicament. Re: [Blind-Computing] Script error with compile
Victor, The unknown variable error message usually indicates that you have made reference to a variable name somewhere in your code that has not been properly declared prior to that reference. It could also be caused by some incorrect syntax in your code in the vicinity of the reference to that variable. Uhm, with all due respect, one does not need to obtain contracts or anything like that, especially since the PDA's you spoke of don't have that capability. You can't call someone using one of Freedom Scientifics' products, nor with Humanware's products. So, even if you purchase a cell phone without any service, along with 200 or 299, depending on where you're from for Talks or Mobile Speaks, the price still comes out cheaper, and you don't have to worry about having to send it into FS or Humanware for repair, since anyone who repairs cell phones can repair the one you bought, whereas if you send out your specialty product to the corner store to get it repaired, guess what, you're out of luck. Like I said in my original message, even if you purchase a cell phone, with or without an actual calling package, you're still paying a heck of a lot less then you would if you bought a Pack Mate, or anything else along those lines. I'm sorry if that irks you, but it's the truth. Ken, Open a DOS window and type the following followed by the ENTER key: RECOVER /? Be sure to include a space character before the slash character and a question mark immediately after the slash character. If the RECOVER command is available on your OS, that line should give you instructions on how to use it. If the RECOVER command is not available, type HELP and press the ENTER key. Re: [Blind-Computing] Cd track list
How about using the find and replace function? Have it find the string of characters that you want to delete and have it replace that string with an empty string. You can tell it to replace all occurances. hth Bob - Original Message - From: Steve Crews [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Tuesday, November 18, 2008 6:41 AM Subject: [Blind-Computing] Cd track list Hello, I am burning some CD's for a friend. I want to print a track list for each CD. When I open an album folder, I get a list of each track preceeded by the track number. And this is fine. But sometimes when I open an album folder, the name of the Cd is listed before each track number and title. And this gets a little redundant having to listen to JAWS read the album title before each track number and song title. I copy and paste the track list into Word Pad and then go line by line highlighting and deleting the title, which is pretty time consuming and tedious. Is there a function in Word Pad that would allow me to more easily delete the album title from each line? Any help would be appreciated. Re: [Blind-Computing] Computer speaker question
Mike, From your description, my guess is that the humming sound that you are hearing is known as a 60-cycle hum which comes from the frequency of your home's electrical circuits. Have you re-arranged any of your computer system's components recently or added some electrical device to the circuit into which your sub-woofer is connected? If the sub-woofer's 110-volt plug is not designed to prevent reversing the way it is plugged into the electrical outlet, try reversing that plug and see if that has any effect. You could also try plugging your sub-woofer's 110-volt power cord into an outlet that is on a different household circuit. hth Bob - Original Message - From: Mike Barbara [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: -Blind Computing blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Friday, September 26, 2008 3:20 PM Subject: [Blind-Computing] Computer speaker question Hi All, I am using a 2.1 speaker system. I like to do things the plain and simple way. That way, you don't have to remember so many special key strokes and methods. If I want anything from an e-mail message, here is what I do. 1. I open the message of interest. 2. I open the file menu. 3. I select the Save As... option 4. I save the message as a .txt file. 5. I open the .txt file with NotePad. 6. I can edit or copy any part of the message including the header and the body. I don't have any idea what the problem is with Gold Wave but, could you play the file with WinAmp and record it with Gold Wave and then convert it. Just a passing thought... I have downloaded an OGG file that I wish to convert to MP3. I have and am using Goldwave to convert it, and I get an error that reads the file contains 2 or more incompatible streams. I thought to myself that this couldn't be right, as the file is not being streamed to my computer, as I have already downloaded the file. I have used both the batch conversion utility of GoldWave, and the manual utility, and at each instance, I get that error. I can't even open the file using GoldWave, as the error chimes in as soon as I try to open the file. Funny enough, it plays no problem with Winamp, but then again, Winamp has a ton of plug-ins and isn't particular as to what it plays. Does anyone have any ideas as to what this could be? Re: [Blind-Computing] Audio Software Issue
Victor, I believe that Gold Wave uses its own internal format for processing files. Once recorded, you can probably save the file into any format supported by Gold Wave. I haven't actually done this but, you would start Gold Wave recording using the input from What I Hear setting in the volume control. Then start playing the file with WinAmp. You would need to be sure that Jaws would not speak during the recording because that would be recorded also unless Jaws is using an output device other than the sound card that plays the music files. Good luck!
