Re: [Blind-Computing] Windows Firewall Again
I am curious, is this windows xp or vista? if xp, then it's just a matter of going to control panel, windows firewall and pressing the up or down arrow to change the setting. from there, press tab a bit until you get to apply. I've never had to rout jaws to pc, that I know of to navigate anything inside control panel, except for the disk management program. :p On May 22, 2010, at 5:35 AM, Ace wrote: Hi there On further investigation via the control panel in the security section I found the firewall and managed to turn it off, although to do so I had to use the JAWS curser to press enter at the appropriate point. Not sure, I do know that from what I have read, you don't really need to defrag flashdrives, but, as far as formatting, it's just a matter to how much you read and write back and forth to the drive that can make it go bad. Re: [Blind-Computing] calculator
Actually, I ran across a few different tools that were exactly what I was looking for. As far as graphing, I guess that would be sort of hard with a screen reader. But, what I was searching for, or, wanting to find at least was something to take care of loads of different conversions but still give me what the normal windows calc has as far as accessibility with using jaws. the ability to go from different modes, one for conversions, one for just typing in the numbers and pressing enter, something like that. I found two different calcs though, both beeing free. One is by solarwinds used for calculating IP related stuff, neat and the other one is just for conversions of pretty much anything you could think of. Not sure why I wanted these things but who knows when you may want/need to use something like this. Nice thing is, they are both small, portable and are very accessible. Re: [Blind-Computing] Netbook computers and Jaws
From what I have noticed on mine so far, my netbook beeing an asus eee pc 1000h, only issue is sometimes with how it reads things on the screen. Of corse, the display settings are a bit weird on this one as it's screen is a bit smaller than say the sampsung but it's really not anything I have had to worry about. I have read that it has issues with the display beeing set as it's default of right below 1024/768 but it's only acted odd a few times and it's only when I maximize things like in notepad. Other than that, they are wonderful computers and jaws works beautifully. - Original Message - From: Don Risavy, Jr. drisav...@att.net To: Blind Computing blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Tuesday, May 26, 2009 9:50 PM Subject: [Blind-Computing] Netbook computers and Jaws Wondered which netbook computers work the best with Jaws? Re: [Blind-Computing] using vinux 1.4 on eeepc 1000h netbook
Well, I would do that but I currently do not have the option of using ethernet, which ironicly enough does work. I only have wireless so I either have to find the driver, stick it onto a flashdrive and bring it over to the vinux install to install it or something of the sort. I did actuallly find the driver for the wireless, put it on a flashdrive and tried to install it after booting into vinux and installing. I then ran into dependencies issues so it's finding what the drivers need to install. Just keeps getting ore fun, lol. [Blind-Computing] question on restoring an xp image using image for windows
Hello list. As the subject states, I am needing help restoring an image using image for windows. I did listen to the tutorials on the site and could not manage to figure out how to fix my issue. When I first tried out this program, I was using the 30 day trial and made my image after the second day. Now that I have payed for the program, I am needing to restore the image I created when I still had the trial. Problem is, when I try using the steps in the tutorial, it gives me a message saying my trial is up and only lets me reboot the computer. I have written Terabyte Unlimited support asking them how to resolve this and have not gotten anything back. Is there a way to make the first disk again to get around this trial crap or am I going to have to install xp, install the drivers plus jaws and then create my image again? I have read through all the info I could find on Terabyte Unlimited's sight and can't seem to find any info on this. Any help or ideas would be awesome. Thanks. Re: [Blind-Computing] an old computer user with a few questions aboutlaptops
Hello. Hopefully I can help out a bit with this. As far as how different it will be from using the pc you are used to, the only thing I can think of that you will have to get used to is the keyboard. If you are used to running the OS that comes on the laptop you will love it. The wifi is pretty easy to set up out of the box, just need to set up the router to connect to. It's pretty much the same as having the cable that goes from the router to the pc accept there is no cable. I have had two laptops in the last 10 years and both still run as well as when I got them, only problem beeing the batteries wich go out after a while just from charging and running down again and again. Most of us who use laptops for a while actually like them more because they are nice to be able to take on the road and be able to use without having to have wireless keyboards and such. The two I had were an older hp and the knewest one is a dell so I have been pleased so far. Good luck with your searching and if you need anything else, please feel free to ask. I can see some obvious advantiges to clamscan beeing that windows isn't running when you boot the live cd but is it even worth the time to do something like that? Any ideas on this would be great. Re: [Blind-Computing] Repeating my question
Well, not sure if this could be the issue, but, sometimes if the computer is trying to get a dhcp address from the router or what ever it does sort of lock up for a second. The only time I have ever seen this happen of corse is if you go make a change in your network settings, say change from using a static IP to one given to you through dhcp. When I have noticed this, it only seems to last about 2 seconds though. As was also said, perhaps it's something popping up on the screen, maybe a firewall asking you questions about a connection trying to be made through the card in witch this could also make it lock up. Just my ideas though. Best of luck getting this to work. - Original Message - From: Elaine elaine.d...@gmail.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Thursday, February 12, 2009 12:21 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Repeating my question hiya Ariana no, sorry don't know what is causing that, but I'm wondering if you have a message come up on screen that jaws isn't reading. do you have anyone who could read the screen for you? Re: [Blind-Computing] Strange Firewall Message
Well, I wont say that one is better than the other but sygate certainly is easier to configure and I have had less issues running it. I don't remember what people say about windows firewall, like it does not enable you to control the outgoing ports or what ever but I do know that sygate is accessible, it does enable you to control both incoming and outgoing and as I said, I have never had any problems with it. - Original Message - From: Gerald Levy bwaylimi...@verizon.net To: blind-computing blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Monday, February 09, 2009 8:33 AM Subject: [Blind-Computing][Blind-Computing] Strange Firewall Message Hi listers. [Blind-Computing] Ghosting my windows xp if I need to reinstall
Hello list. I think this has been discussed on this list before but I just can't seem to find anything about it going through my old mail so here it goes. I had to do a format and reinstall of win xp not to long ago and would like to find a way to ghost my xp so it's easier the next time around to get going again. I have all the drivers for my machine but it's just a pain to go through everything over and over and would be much better if I had some sort of immage or what ever to just reinstall from. Is it possible to get a computer the way you want it, drivers installed, screen reader configured, etc and make an immage of this to reinstall when something bad goes on or is it more accessible and or easier to just make an unattended cd and go through the format and install that way. Any info on accessibility of ghosting, how it works, what's the best way to do this would be awsome. Hope all are well. When you make an immage of your install, how do you go about getting it reinstalled? I am assuming that there are things that have to be done when you put the cd or what ever media back in to install from? Re: [Blind-Computing] Del laptop question
The wireless tool that my dell uses is really not all that bad, it's just a bit different from the regular one windows uses. I offen go back to the regular one to though. - Original Message - From: Sherrie sillygoo...@gmail.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Thursday, February 05, 2009 6:15 AM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Del laptop question I have a Del laptop and I have had to set it up twice since the hard drive had to be replaced after a year. Both times I had a very weird problem in that the keyboard would not control the jaws functions properly. Like I would press Alt F4 and it would say alt control f4 and would not do what it was supposed to. I called FS both times (since I forgot the original fix) and we figured out that it was necessary to go to the msconfig from the run command and unclick everything in the start list that was not absolutely necessary. I think the main culprit turned out to be my Lexmark printer applications. So just in case you end up with this weird problem here is the fix. Also, Dell has a weird connection to the wireless signals. I really liked just using the regular Microsoft connect to dialog. I finally had to call Dell to see how to connect and even now I am not quite sure how it works. Those were the two main hurdles with a Dell that I think other laptops don't have. All in all I like my Dell and I especially like the switch that allows me to turn off the wireless signal without having to go through the disconnect routine. I just flip the switch when I am not at the computer and I feel a little bit safer from Internet intrusion . Good luck with your new laptop. Most of the time, you will not want to run more than one antivirus at the same time. The same goes for firewalls. Hello. I love this topic. I was actually thinking about getting one of these to and was wondering the same thing. With them not having a cd drive, I am assuming that booting from usb is how you would get linux or what ever else going on one of these? Also, how hard is it to find one with win xp all ready on it or is it a matter of having to buy it and find the drivers? - Original Message - From: Lino Morales lino0...@gmail.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Tuesday, February 03, 2009 3:07 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Accessible NetBook Computers Well one can buy an external CDR or DVD drive that connects to a USB port. miranda is really not that bad once you get it configured it's just a pain in the ass to get going at first. I think I tried the accessible one a while ago and had good luck with it as well but now am just using the knewest updated version with the scripts and the dll that is needed. Only thing I had trouble with is getting the sounds configured with the msn part of it but that's just because I wasn't sure what sound needed to go where as there are alot of different options for attaching sounds to. [Blind-Computing] recommendations for two peaces of hardware, bluetooth keyboard and headset
Hello list. I am currently searching for a nice small keyboard that I can use on my laptop that like I said will not take up to much space and is bluetooth or what ever works wirelessly. I am also searching for a good headset that is also wireless that I can use for either vt skype or what ever else I may need a mic for. Unfortunitly when I go out to either radio shack or fries electronics to check out the different things they have it doesn't seem that they have much of a selection so figured I would ask here to see what people would recommend. The only things I have been able to find so far is a keyboard made for the mac wich will not work on windows and a bluetooth earpiece witch does work but is only in mono. If something better is out there that has good sound and is nice and compact for the keyboard at least that would be great. Take care all and thanks for all the help I have gotten so far. Re: [Blind-Computing] UPGRANG TO WINDOWS7
wow, I am curious how you are using virtual box. I was not thinking that it was accessible or is it just a knew version that is? - Original Message - From: Negoslav Sabev neg...@gmail.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Friday, January 16, 2009 5:14 AM Subject: [Blind-Computing] UPGRANG TO WINDOWS7 Hello, I'm trying to install windows7 on a virtual machine, but i have some problems.. I use virtual box 1.6 for the purpose. First I want to know if it's possible to upgrade from xp to windows 7?? Since I don't have sight, maybe it's easyer to upgrade from a previous version. I don't have unattended vista disk to upgrade from vista, so I can use only xp for this. First I install xp, but what kind of machine I should create. There's no windows 7 virtualization in this version of VB. Is it a problem to choose vista as a system, to install xp and then to upgrade to windows 7? I installed xp on vista virtual machine, so there's no problem at the moment. My biggest problem installing windows 7 is that VB gives me the following message: VirtualBox - Information The virtual machine window is optimized to work in 32 bit color mode but the color quality of the virtual display is currently set to 24 bit. Please open the display properties dialog of the guest OS and select a 32 bit color mode, if it is available, for best possible performance of the virtual video subsystem. Note. Some operating systems, like OS/2, may actually work in 32 bit mode but report it as 24 bit (16 million colors). You may try to select a different color quality to see if this message disappears or you can simply disable the message now if you are sure the required color quality (32 bit) is not available in the given guest OS. Do not show this message again OK It doesn't give me this when I install XP. In controll panel/display, everything is ok, but when I start the instalation, the machine restarts and gives me this. What can I do? How do I change the setting? It does nothing when I press ok and remove the message. The other question I have is about the instalation itself. When I start it from xp, I have to choose between upgrading and keeping my files, and clean install. Is there important difference in terms of accessibility? Hello larry. Hopefully I can help you out a bit with this as far as I know it anyways. If you are with a sprint or verizon network, wich is CDMA you have to go with some sort of pocket pc phone and install mobile speak, either the smart phone version or mobile speak pocket for pocket pcs. As was said earlier, if on a gsm network like att or t-mobile we have a bit more options and can use talks or the simbion version of mobile speak. Re: [Blind-Computing] Need suggestions for assistive technology
I agree with an idea like this. As far as the garman, I don't think it gets down to the foot on locations, as we would need it to. It's not all that hard for a person who is sited to pick out an exact location if the garman gets close enough for them to see it but for us, we require something that will give us street names, tell us what places are on or around that street name, etc. I was under the assumption that products such as the trekker, trekker breze, wayfinder and what ever else is out there would be more exact. And although there are several GPS options out there for the blind, they are quite prohibitive due to their price and/or levels of complication of use. True, Humanware has come out with the Trekker Breeze, but it cost around $800 and does not offer the flexibility of an off the shelf GPS. The Garman GPS I purchased for my wife was $150 and came with text to speech as well as a whole host of other useful features. So, here is my suggestion: There is software from Rock Box that can be installed on various digital recorders and mp3 players; why not apply this technology to an off the shelf GPS unit? The Rock Box software speaks menus and other important aspects of the device on which it is installed. By creating Rock Box like software for GPS units, more people would be able to afford to purchase one. And when I hear my wife or kids use the Garman, it sounds like its interface is very simple, thus making it easy to learn how to use. Please consider this suggestion. I suggested doing something to help the visually impaired with computers, cell phones, etc. Is there something that you find particularly difficult or frustrating with any of your computer or digital equipment? If you could design something perfect for a blind user, what would it be? How would it be different from what you currently have or use? Feel free to offer as many suggestions as you like. I'm not sure the extent of his project, but I'm sure he'll try to do something immediately usable. Re: [Blind-Computing] Playing avi and Video Files Help With Jaws
Depends on where you got the avi. I have downloaded some that work fine in winamp and in media player but others either have only video or audio and can have other issues. When I get one that works well, I don't think I needed to get anything special to play them in winamp. - Original Message - From: Marvin Hunkin startrekc...@gmail.com To: blind-computing@jaws-users.com Sent: Monday, January 05, 2009 4:07 AM Subject: [Blind-Computing] Playing avi and Video Files Help With Jaws Hi. any one experienced in playing avi or video files on their machines. tried using winamp, but no audio comes up. if try to play in media classic player, it start play the audio, but tells me the time it loads, then it stop playing the audio, like encounter at far point 1 and 2 for the next generation. now, how do i get it to play with winamp, or can i just use good old windows media player or are there any other encoders, that i need. some one did send me an encoder, so might try that. really annoying. downloading season one of the next generation. and now, how to play the damn thing. even quick time, does not play. so can any one help me out? playing video files using jaws? cheers Marvin. ps: need expert help, if they have set up the various media players. e-mail me off list for help. so do not clog up the list. Re: [Blind-Computing] Duel Booting With Jaws
Hello, as far as vmware, at least in xp it works very well for testing and what ever else you decide to do with it. The only way I can see to take care of a dule boot is to have some way to know where vista and xp are on the boot order, so, for example, boot up the comp and a boot loader comes up and xp is the first on the list and vista or what ever else is second or third on the list. you can press your down arrows to get to the next on the list and press enter on what ever you want to boot. As far as your networking classes you may take, I am curious of how they will make them accessible for you. [Blind-Computing] Question about virus removal
Hello list. I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of how to create some sort of bootable cd using linux or something else that I could use for virus removal. I was thinking that you could use something like grml to boot and then scan your ntfs partitions but would like to be able to put something like this on a usb stick. I know it can be done using linux itself, but was looking for a way to create this bootable grml flashstick on windows so as to not have to screw around with running grml or what ever in vmware to create it. Please forgive me if this is not exactly on topic but figured I would give it a shot as it sort of has to do with using jaws to get it done. Any help on or off list would be greatfully appreciated. If any other accessible means of doing diagnostic things like this I would also be interested to here what people have to say about them.
