Re: [Blind-Computing] Windows Firewall Again

2010-05-26 Thread jeremy
I am curious, is this windows xp or vista? if xp, then it's just a matter of
going to control panel, windows firewall and pressing the up or down arrow to
change the setting. from there, press tab a bit until you get to apply. I've
never had to rout jaws to pc, that I know of to navigate anything inside
control panel, except for the disk management program. :p

If both scanners work correctly on your PC and both scanners work
incorrectly on your husband's PC then the problem is not with the
scanners.

The problem lies somewhere between the scanner and the videeo display on
your husband's PC.

I suggest comparing the optional settings in the scanner-related
software

between those on your PC and those on your husband's PC. If no
differences
exist there, compare the drivers for the scanner between both PC's. If
no
differences exist there, compare the video drivers between both PC's.
If

Not sure, I do know that from what I have read, you don't really need to
defrag flashdrives, but, as far as formatting, it's just a matter to how
much you read and write back and forth to the drive that can make it go bad.
They are supposed to have a life span of so many read/writes, but, I have
never had a flashdrive go bad yet so I can't really give any guesses to how
long that may actually be. I have actually thaught of doing linux installs

Hi Shikher,
You should get your heart set on something else,
because you are not going to be able to hide those partitions.
Even if you could, you will need to make them shown again, before
shutting

down the computer.
The computer cannot boot from a partition it can't see.
If you are wanting to avoid infections, then run a good security software
suite,
and change your e-mail and internet surfing habits.
Most computer viruses are contracted as a result of installing software
from

less than well-known sites, and opening e-mail messages from people you
don't know.
If you are going to have a dual, or multi-boot system,
you will need to make sure that each operating system is protected by
security software while in use.
The only other way I can think of to use other operating systems on one
machine
is to install them in a virtual environment, within a host operating
system.

I can't speak to that type of arrangement, since I have never tried it,
and so I don't know what the security concerns would be.

now come to the point, i want two drives i.e. c: and e: for XP and
d:, f: for vista.
i don't want to show d: and f:(vista's partitions) while i'm in XP and
similar during running vista not to show XP's two partitions to avoid
infecting both OS files from virus if virus comes during work in one
OS.
and to keep data private.

i want two- two partitions one for instaling OS and second for keeping
data.

actually i had both XP and vista instaled at my laptop previously but
due to virus infection at my both drives which had XP and vista, i had
to reinstall. now i'm running XP only. that's whyy
i think i've cleared my querey.

Re: [Blind-Computing] calculator

2009-05-30 Thread jeremy
Actually, I ran across a few different tools that were exactly what I was
looking for. As far as graphing, I guess that would be sort of hard with a
screen reader. But, what I was searching for, or, wanting to find at least
was something to take care of loads of different conversions but still give
me what the normal windows calc has as far as accessibility with using jaws.
the ability to go from different modes, one for conversions, one for just
typing in the numbers and pressing enter, something like that. I found two
different calcs though, both beeing free. One is by solarwinds used for
calculating IP related stuff, neat and the other one is just for conversions
of pretty much anything you could think of. Not sure why I wanted these
things but who knows when you may want/need to use something like this. Nice
thing is, they are both small, portable and are very accessible. The one
from solarwinds is called advanced subnet calculator and the conversion one
is called convert.

Scientific stuff?

The Windows 2000 Pro calculator will do just about everything any other so
called scientific calculator can do except for graphing and programmable
functions. Later versions might be even more sophisticated.

What kind of scientific stuff did you have in mind?

Another question about calculators for windows, does there happen to be
another calculator out there that can do more than the normal calc that is
still accessible with jaws? I guess it would be hard to do graphing and
scientific stuff with a screen reader but i was curious about the
different

options as far as that goes. Sorry by the way if this is off topic.

From what I have noticed on mine so far, my netbook beeing an asus eee pc

corse, the display settings are a bit weird on this one as it's screen is a
bit smaller than say the sampsung but it's really not anything I have had to
worry about. I have read that it has issues with the display beeing set as
it's default of right below 1024/768 but it's only acted odd a few times and
it's only when I maximize things like in notepad. Other than that, they are
wonderful computers and jaws works beautifully.

Re: [Blind-Computing] using vinux 1.4 on eeepc 1000h netbook

2009-05-05 Thread jeremy
Well, I would do that but I currently do not have the option of using
ethernet, which ironicly enough does work. I only have wireless so I either
have to find the driver, stick it onto a flashdrive and bring it over to the
vinux install to install it or something of the sort. I did actuallly find
the driver for the wireless, put it on a flashdrive and tried to install it
after booting into vinux and installing. I then ran into dependencies issues
so it's finding what the drivers need to install. Just keeps getting ore
fun, lol. Thannks for getting back.

It could possibly be a matter of drivers. Just for kicks, have you tried
updating your OS? It is possible that wireless drivers could have been
added or modified in an update. And, have you tried using different
wireless settings in the GUi?

[Blind-Computing] question on restoring an xp image using image for windows

2009-03-22 Thread jeremy
Hello list. As the subject states, I am needing help restoring an image
using image for windows. I did listen to the tutorials on the site and could
not manage to figure out how to fix my issue. When I first tried out this
program, I was using the 30 day trial and made my image after the second
day. Now that I have payed for the program, I am needing to restore the
image I created when I still had the trial. Problem is, when I try using the
steps in the tutorial, it gives me a message saying my trial is up and only
lets me reboot the computer. I have written Terabyte Unlimited support
asking them how to resolve this and have not gotten anything back. Is there
a way to make the first disk again to get around this trial crap or am I
going to have to install xp, install the drivers plus jaws and then create
my image again? I have read through all the info I could find on Terabyte
Unlimited's sight and can't seem to find any info on this. Any help or ideas
would be awesome.
Thanks.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Remote Control Software with Screen Readers

2009-03-03 Thread jeremy
From what I recall, and I may not be correct, you have to have jaws on both
sides to do this. This is something that has been asked about before and
yes, it would be wonderful to get more info on ways to do this, ways that
would not require you to have a screen reader on both computers.

securecrt with nvda. I may try it out to see how well it goes.

Wow, that's exactly what I was searching for. I was looking for a smaller
sized, probably something like a laptop keyboard that was wireless. Now,
it's just a matter of finding it in any of the computer or electronic places
around here. If it's not to much troule, did you happen to ketch the name of
the laptop sized one with the feet? Only ones i have seen so far are
bluetooth and cost over or around 120 dollars. I was really liking the
stowaway think outside keyboard but the company, igo doesn't seem to cary
this device anymore.

Re: [Blind-Computing] an old computer user with a few questions aboutlaptops

2009-02-18 Thread jeremy
Hello. Hopefully I can help out a bit with this. As far as how different it
will be from using the pc you are used to, the only thing I can think of
that you will have to get used to is the keyboard. If you are used to
running the OS that comes on the laptop you will love it. The wifi is pretty
easy to set up out of the box, just need to set up the router to connect to.
It's pretty much the same as having the cable that goes from the router to
the pc accept there is no cable. I have had two laptops in the last 10 years
and both still run as well as when I got them, only problem beeing the
batteries wich go out after a while just from charging and running down
again and again. Most of us who use laptops for a while actually like them
more because they are nice to be able to take on the road and be able to use
without having to have wireless keyboards and such. The two I had were an
older hp and the knewest one is a dell so I have been pleased so far. Good
luck with your searching and if you need anything else, please feel free to
ask.

Wow, didn't know about clamwin. I have used the linux version of it and had
good luck so far but this will be nice. This may be a stupid question, but
what's the differences between booting a live cd of grml or other distro and
running clamscan to scan your windows partition and running clamwin? I can
see some obvious advantiges to clamscan beeing that windows isn't running
when you boot the live cd but is it even worth the time to do something like
that? Any ideas on this would be great.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Repeating my question

2009-02-12 Thread jeremy
Well, not sure if this could be the issue, but, sometimes if the computer is
trying to get a dhcp address from the router or what ever it does sort of
lock up for a second. The only time I have ever seen this happen of corse is
if you go make a change in your network settings, say change from using a
static IP to one given to you through dhcp. When I have noticed this, it
only seems to last about 2 seconds though. As was also said, perhaps it's
something popping up on the screen, maybe a firewall asking you questions
about a connection trying to be made through the card in witch this could
also make it lock up. Just my ideas though. Best of luck getting this to
work.

no, sorry don't know what is causing that, but I'm wondering if you have a

do you have anyone who could read the screen for you?

I would remove all wireless connections and start from scratch, to be

Re: [Blind-Computing] Strange Firewall Message

2009-02-10 Thread jeremy
Well, I wont say that one is better than the other but sygate certainly is
easier to configure and I have had less issues running it. I don't remember
what people say about windows firewall, like it does not enable you to
control the outgoing ports or what ever but I do know that sygate is
accessible, it does enable you to control both incoming and outgoing and as
I said, I have never had any problems with it.

Hi listers. Lately, whenever I turn on my Dell Precision 390 workstation
with XP Pro, or awaken it from Standby mode, I hear a message like, Your
Firewall Is Not Turned On. This is not the case, because I have
checked the Windows Firewall option on the Control Panel, and it is
definitely turned on. I use AVG 7.5 Network Edition which does not have a
firewall setting. So is my Windows Firewall working or not? If so, how
can I get rid of this message? Everyone loves to bash MS, but would
Sygate Firewall really be any better than Windows Firewall? Thanks.

Hello list. I have an external hd, 500 gb that has some duplicates of some old

Re: [Blind-Computing] Del laptop question

2009-02-05 Thread jeremy
The wireless tool that my dell uses is really not all that bad, it's just a
bit different from the regular one windows uses. I offen go back to the
regular one to though.

Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Del laptop question

I have a Del laptop and I have had to set it up twice since the hard drive
had to be replaced after a year. Both times I had a very weird problem in
that the keyboard would not control the jaws functions properly. Like I
would press Alt F4 and it would say alt control f4 and would not do what
it

was supposed to. I called FS both times (since I forgot the original fix)
and we figured out that it was necessary to go to the msconfig from the
run

command and unclick everything in the start list that was not absolutely
necessary. I think the main culprit turned out to be my Lexmark printer
applications.
So just in case you end up with this weird problem here is the fix.
Also, Dell has a weird connection to the wireless signals. I really liked
just using the regular Microsoft connect to dialog. I finally had to
call

Dell to see how to connect and even now I am not quite sure how it works.
Those were the two main hurdles with a Dell that I think other laptops
don't

have. All in all I like my Dell and I especially like the switch that
allows me to turn off the wireless signal without having to go through
the

disconnect routine. I just flip the switch when I am not at the computer
and I feel a little bit safer from Internet intrusion .
Good luck with your new laptop.

Well, as far as setting it up, all you will need to do is perhaps run
narrator and go throughout the setup of xp. You can do this by pressing
windows and the u key. It may not be needed but most of the time, that's
what you have to do.

Re: [Blind-Computing] FIREWALLS

2009-02-05 Thread jeremy
Most of the time, you will not want to run more than one antivirus at the
same time. The same goes for firewalls. When it comes to firewalls, if you
have more than one, they can screw with each other's ability to watch over
the connection, witch makes things tough.

Is it problematic to have two firewalls? I am running XP professional and I
have the box in the system menues checked so that the built in firewall is
active. The other thing I want to know is what level a firewall should be
set at for maximum protection without being overly intrusive and annoying
when it shouldn't be.

I assume the built in firewall is set at factory defaults at the moment
since I've never changed anything about it. Would I do just fine keeping the
default firewall and changing settings, or have people had better luck with
other firewall programs instead?

miranda is really not that bad once you get it configured it's just a pain
in the ass to get going at first. I think I tried the accessible one a while
ago and had good luck with it as well but now am just using the knewest
updated version with the scripts and the dll that is needed. Only thing I
had trouble with is getting the sounds configured with the msn part of it
but that's just because I wasn't sure what sound needed to go where as there
are alot of different options for attaching sounds to. Once I got it going

[Blind-Computing] recommendations for two peaces of hardware, bluetooth keyboard and headset

2009-01-31 Thread jeremy
Hello list. I am currently searching for a nice small keyboard that I can use
on my laptop that like I said will not take up to much space and is bluetooth
or what ever works wirelessly. I am also searching for a good headset that is
also wireless that I can use for either vt skype or what ever else I may need a
mic for. Unfortunitly when I go out to either radio shack or fries electronics
to check out the different things they have it doesn't seem that they have much
of a selection so figured I would ask here to see what people would recommend.
The only things I have been able to find so far is a keyboard made for the mac
wich will not work on windows and a bluetooth earpiece witch does work but is
only in mono. If something better is out there that has good sound and is nice
and compact for the keyboard at least that would be great. Take care all and
thanks for all the help I have gotten so far.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Question about accessible ftp server software

2009-01-29 Thread jeremy
Well, I do use ftp explorer for a client but I am looking to set up a server
so that's what I was searching for. I think that filezilla does have a
server version but last time I tried it out it didn't work so well. Any more
ideas would be wonderful. Thanks

Now there are ftp explorer, and filezila, cuteFTP, and flashFXP, what I
know, out of which I love ftp, which is more accessible, but ftp explorer
has no resuming capability.
Filezila has the resuming capacity.
the others I've not tried out.
if anybody knows any others which resumes, please also tell me, so that I
come to know.

Hello list. I have been searching these last few weeks for an ftp server

Subject: [Blind-Computing] UPGRANG TO WINDOWS7

Hello,

I'm trying to install windows7 on a virtual machine, but i have some
problems.. I use virtual box 1.6 for the purpose.
First I want to know if it's possible to upgrade from xp to windows 7??
Since I don't have sight, maybe it's easyer to upgrade from a previous
version. I don't have unattended vista disk to upgrade from vista, so I
can

use only xp for this.
First I install xp, but what kind of machine I should create. There's no
windows 7 virtualization in this version of VB. Is it a problem to choose
vista as a system, to install xp and then to upgrade to windows 7? I
installed xp on vista virtual machine, so there's no problem at the
moment.

My biggest problem installing windows 7 is that VB gives me the following
message:

VirtualBox - Information
The virtual machine window is optimized to work in 32 bit color mode but
the color quality of the virtual display is currently set to 24 bit.
Please open the display properties dialog of the guest OS and select a
32 bit color mode, if it is available, for best possible performance of
the

virtual video subsystem.
Note. Some operating systems, like OS/2, may actually work in 32 bit
mode but report it as 24 bit (16 million colors). You may try to select a
different color quality to see if this message disappears or you can
simply
disable the message now if you are sure the required color quality (32
bit)

is not available in the given guest OS.
Do not show this message again
OK

It doesn't give me this when I install XP. In controll panel/display,
everything is ok, but when I start the instalation, the machine restarts
and

gives me this. What can I do? How do I change the setting? It does nothing
when I press ok and remove the message.
The other question I have is about the instalation itself. When I start it
from xp, I have to choose between upgrading and keeping my files, and
clean

install. Is there important difference in terms of accessibility?

Chris, can you use V lite to generate an unattended install file, or do
you have to actually manually script the install with an xml file.

Hi all,
I had a brainwave. I have a program called VLite which allows you to
customize a Windows installation by integrating drivers, hot fixes, etc.
So I'm thinking that if Microsoft are saying that Vista software and
hardware are fully compatible with 7, then I could just integrate my
Vista drivers into the 7 install and therefore I won't have to worry
about sound, video, etc. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Sherrie, this really opens the flood gates.

One of the most frustrating things for a visually impaired cell phone user
is to have some, but not all of the menus, spoken. If someone could
develop

a way for the cell phone and the PC to be linked so that changes could be
made on the cell phone through the screen reader and connecting software
on

the computer, that would be a break through. Even the best talking cell
phones have limitations which Jaws doesn't usually have.

Now as for the PC itself, how about developing the technology so that Jaws
or another program can read those annoying digital images that are

The images in this example are things like a building, a gate, a tree,
etc.
How in the name of Heaven can a blind person do that without trying to
place

a label on these links. I tried that but for security reasons, the images
are shown in a random display which means that the building might be at
the

top of the list, at the bottom or somewhere in between. Jaws is a great
program but that, it can't do as far as I know.

Aiden, it doesn't work. 2.1 is not properly accessible and it even crashes

Re: [Blind-Computing] Cell phone confusion.

2009-01-12 Thread jeremy
Hello larry. Hopefully I can help you out a bit with this as far as I know
it anyways. If you are with a sprint or verizon network, wich is CDMA you
have to go with some sort of pocket pc phone and install mobile speak,
either the smart phone version or mobile speak pocket for pocket pcs. As was
said earlier, if on a gsm network like att or t-mobile we have a bit more
options and can use talks or the simbion version of mobile speak. Have a
look at mobile speaks sight and it has a listing of phones that it will
support and what network they work on.

Hi folks,

I am an all tel subscriber and would like to know what if
any of the speech accessible phones and software packages
are available on their network.
I really don't understand the nexus between hardware and

should be accessible on all networks, this however does not
appear to be the case.
Any help you folks can provide in untangling this mess would

Sherrie, this really opens the flood gates.

One of the most frustrating things for a visually impaired cell phone
user

is to have some, but not all of the menus, spoken. If someone could
develop
a way for the cell phone and the PC to be linked so that changes could be
made on the cell phone through the screen reader and connecting software
on
the computer, that would be a break through. Even the best talking cell
phones have limitations which Jaws doesn't usually have.

Now as for the PC itself, how about developing the technology so that
Jaws

or another program can read those annoying digital images that are
commonly
used on many web sites as a security measure. Even the latest version of
Jaws cannot read those images and that is incredibly frustrating. You

I agree with you 100%. I am in the same situation and preferences! But as
an Electrical Engineer, I realize there are serious limitations to this!
And at this point, I can not personally judge the quality of the speaker
they selected until I hear it myself. Most likely sometime this month, if
I can get all the xmas bills paid and the van inspected, I will buy one!
But pushing for a better speaker at that point would not personally benefit
me.

Hi all, I am looking forwerd to getting a Stream, but what I do not
understand is why didn't they put a better speaker in the Stream to begin
with? This is a very bad point of contention because the Stream is such a
fantasic device, it's like having blackwall tires on a Cadalac! So, can
we ask Human Ware to now begin upgrading the speaker in the Stream,
especially before I get one...Ha! I can't see having such a compact
device and having to carry around extr speakers to listen to it and I
don't like headphone.
MMM
By the way, is there any where I can get a deal on the Stream? Plus, what
does a 32 Gb card cost for it?

Re: [Blind-Computing] Need suggestions for assistive technology

2009-01-07 Thread jeremy
I agree with an idea like this. As far as the garman, I don't think it gets
down to the foot on locations, as we would need it to. It's not all that
hard for a person who is sited to pick out an exact location if the garman
gets close enough for them to see it but for us, we require something that
will give us street names, tell us what places are on or around that street
name, etc. I was under the assumption that products such as the trekker,
trekker breze, wayfinder and what ever else is out there would be more
exact.

Have a good day

Hello Sherri,

For Christmas, I bought my sighted wife a Garman GPS unit and she loves
it. And although there are several GPS options out there for the blind,
they are quite prohibitive due to their price and/or levels of
complication of use. True, Humanware has come out with the Trekker Breeze,
but it cost around $800 and does not offer the flexibility of an off the
shelf GPS. The Garman GPS I purchased for my wife was $150 and came with
text to speech as well as a whole host of other useful features.

So, here is my suggestion: There is software from Rock Box that can be
installed on various digital recorders and mp3 players; why not apply this
technology to an off the shelf GPS unit? The Rock Box software speaks
menus and other important aspects of the device on which it is installed.
By creating Rock Box like software for GPS units, more people would be
able to afford to purchase one. And when I hear my wife or kids use the
Garman, it sounds like its interface is very simple, thus making it easy
to learn how to use.

Please consider this suggestion.

Mauricio

I received the following from a friend and was wondering if anyone
had any suggestions I could offer. I am not sure exactly what to
tell this person.I need advice about what is not available or could
be improved...

Here is the letter I received:
How do you feel about contributing some ideas about handling
technology? A friend is working on his computer science degree. One
class this semester requires
that he improves current hardware or software, or designs new
hardware or software in some way. He was trying to figure out a
niche market to address. I
suggested doing something to help the visually impaired with
computers, cell phones, etc. Is there something that you find
particularly difficult or frustrating
with any of your computer or digital equipment? If you could design
something perfect for a blind user, what would it be? How would it
be different
from what you currently have or use? Feel free to offer as many
suggestions as you like. I'm not sure the extent of his project, but
I'm sure he'll try
to do something immediately usable.

Depends on where you got the avi. I have downloaded some that work fine in

Re: [Blind-Computing] Duel Booting With Jaws

2008-12-21 Thread jeremy
Hello, as far as vmware, at least in xp it works very well for testing and
what ever else you decide to do with it. The only way I can see to take care
of a dule boot is to have some way to know where vista and xp are on the
boot order, so, for example, boot up the comp and a boot loader comes up and
xp is the first on the list and vista or what ever else is second or third
on the list. you can press your down arrows to get to the next on the list
and press enter on what ever you want to boot. As far as your networking
classes you may take, I am curious of how they will make them accessible for
you. I have wanted to also look into things like this and would be greatful
for any info on how classes like sisko would be given to us.

   Hi.
next year, possibly could be taking networking classes, or doing a degree
in

networkking or systems, and will need to use linux, unix, and is there
speech screen readers with that, and also looking at taking php, asp, my
sql, word press, sisco, and windows server, and also possibly mac.
have you used voice over, and if so, how good.
and now, with the say, you have 2 operating systems, on your box, for
jaws,

now, how do you choose the dual boot option, if no speech, at boot up, to
choose between vista and say windows xp.
and does vista have its own partician utility?
or do i use some thing like partician magic.
also, can i use some thing like virtual box or vm ware, for virtual

I do it at college, so all the equipment is already there, and believe me,
with some of the kit you have to use, you'd actually be pretty glad they
don't ship it to your home because your talking industrial grade routers,
they're absolute beasts. As far as the curriculum goes, your instructor
creates an account for you on the academy website and you just read the
materials from there.

but you will also have to make sure that your bios will allow a USB

What version of Jaws are you using?

set up different servers and or take care of the networking you need help

course you will need a hardware speech synthesiser about which I know
nothing. Others may be able to help here.

I do not really know much about Ultimate boot CD but I think the basic
version boots into a kind of MS DOS or PC DOS? If this is so it might be
worth investigating if Jaws for DOS will run on this. I read on this or
the

Jaws list some time ago that Jaws for DOS is now a freeware product.

Just a suggestion to investigate. I have never used Ultimate Boot or Jaws
for DOS so I do not know if this combination will work.

I agree with Chris that you are likely to run into problems just with the
XP

Ultimate Boot CD as I imagine this will be a stripped down OS.

[Blind-Computing] Question about virus removal

2008-12-10 Thread jeremy
Hello list.
I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of how to create some sort of
bootable cd using linux or something else that I could use for virus removal. I
was thinking that you could use something like grml to boot and then scan your
ntfs partitions but would like to be able to put something like this on a usb
stick. I know it can be done using linux itself, but was looking for a way to
create this bootable grml flashstick on windows so as to not have to screw
around with running grml or what ever in vmware to create it. Please forgive me
if this is not exactly on topic but figured I would give it a shot as it sort
of has to do with using jaws to get it done. Any help on or off list would be
greatfully appreciated. If any other accessible means of doing diagnostic
things like this I would also be interested to here what people have to say
about them.
Thankyou

sort of screen reader, either jaws or wineyes or nvda. Any help on this would
be wonderful.
