[Blind-Computing] getting answers from google by email

2011-04-03 Thread lloydfuge352

   Hi,
I have heard in the past that you could send an email to
goo...@capeclear.com and put a question in the subject field and not have
any thing in the edit field and sending it would get a reply with not more
than ten hits. I have tried it without success.

Is anyone familiar with such a form of inquiry? Do I have it right?

thanks for any information.

Hi,

I am embarrassed; some weeks ago I think a program was recommended for

its use. Any information about such a program, where it can be accessed and
so forth would be appreciated.

[Blind-Computing] any special features for cross over cable

2011-02-03 Thread lloydfuge352

Hi

The subject tells it all. I recently noted an email in which the outline of
connecting two PCs for net working with a cross over cable was discussed.
the cable was simply called a UTP cable.

I presume such a cable has USB connections on each end. Are there some
specifications I should know about to purchase an appropriate connector?

Any help would be appreciated.

The computers are an XP and a W7 and I am currently using Jaws 11.

[Blind-Computing] how to find a dvd driver

2010-12-29 Thread lloydfuge352

Hi,

Maybe the question is something different. I got some DVDs for Christmas and
cannot get them to open and display in my XP with JFW 11. In Google I was
told the problem of this type is often because of not having a DVD driver
loaded.

If that sounds probable, where and how can I find such a driver. My computer
is a HP and in the past it has been able to load drivers without searching.

any help would be appreciated; and the more detail the better.

Re: [Blind-Computing] how to find a dvd driver

Thanks for the suggestion, Mark.

I believe that you think there is a single file on the DVD, rather, there
are hundreds of books on it in separate files. I opened the DVD/CD drive and
looked at everything I could bring up. Nothing struck me as a meaningful
approach.
- Original Message -

Thanks for your contribution.

I do have a Windows 7 computer as well, and the DVD does open somewhat on
it; however, I do not have much competence on that machine which is why I am
trying to open the DVD on the XP computer.

I didenter the application key to tryand find open on its menu and on the
file menu as well but neither approach was beneficial.

Thank you, Mark.

Hi
I am not sure about a driver but it may be a couple of things. If you
can go to the My Computer and open the DVD drive. This may let you look
directly at the files. Then you may need to reassign the file extension to
your DVD player program. I had a situation once where the file extensions
became disassociated from the program. It is a relatively easy fix.

 I hope this helps.

Mark

Hi Lloyd;

Do the following;

1. Press Alt + V for the view menu.
2. Arro down to Sort By and press enter.
3. Arrow down and make sure received ascending are checked. If one or
both are not checked press enter on 1 of them and when you press enter it
will check that choice and take you out of the menu so, you will have to
press Alt + V again to go back in and chec the other box if necessary. 1
other note, If you want your emails sorted by name you want to check the

From selection and if you want your messages sorted by what time you
received them you will check Received . Checking From, Ascending

will make your messages appear in alphabetical order with the A's at the
top
and the Z's at the bottom, checking From, Descending will make your
messages come in reverse alphabetical order, the Z's at the top and the
A's
at the bottom. Checking Received Ascending will make your messages
appear by the time they were received with the oldest message appearing
at

the top and newest message at the bottom. Checking Received, and
Descending will make your messages appear with the newest messages at
the
top and oldest messages appearing at the bottom.
I know this is a long winded explanation but, maybe this will help
someone

with less Jaws experience than yourself to understand the Sort By sub
menu choices. Take care.

Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] how hard to install a wireless router

Hello Lloyd,

While setting up a wireless router is fairly easy in terms of setting up
encryption and the like, in other words, a Wireless password so only
people

who have the password can access it, the hardware setup can be moderate to
advanced, depending on the type of service you have.

If you have or are looking to install a wireless router on a service
utilizing DSL service, then it may be difficult without sighted help, as
the

installation required the installation of filters to the existing phone
jacks, and those phone jack filters are rarely easy for a blind person to
be
able to distinguish between the line in and line out. for the router and
the

phone line.

Having said that, you said your friend is colour blind, and so the
difficulty level drops significantly for him, as he can look at the
diagrams
on the filters to be able to distinguish between the two jacks that have
to

be plugged in.

The only problem I could see him encountering, and this would be with both
services, cable and DSL, is being able to tell whether the router is
online

or not.

This part requires some colour identification with the lights on the
router,

and so if he cannot tell what colour the lights are, he can't advise the
rep, if he calls, what colour they are.

With the cable service, it's a bit more simplified, as it does not involve
any filtering of the lines, and just requires straight lines into the
router, and those are fairly hard to miss.

In most cases though, as soon as you tell the service provider that you're
blind/visually impaired, or even colour blind, in most cases, they are
required to send out a tech to install the piece of equipment, as it does
require sight to distinguish the colours on the router.

You should enquire about that.

Once the hardware is set up, the rest is fairly simple, and just involves
logging into the router to set up any firewall, although this part is
already configured by default, unless your friend operates a server or
something else that would require remote access, and setting up a password
for the wireless.

Advanced users will often access the router to increase the time out
protocols and connection types, but these are better left alone for people
who have little experience with those types of settings.

It's all done through your Internet browser, like Firefox or Internet
Explorer, and does require a username and password, but that can be given
to

you by your ISP tech support.

Hope this helps.

Scorpio

[Blind-Computing] how hard to install a wireless router

2010-07-08 Thread lloydfuge352
Last night I was told that installing a wireless router to a cable is
rather simple. Is it something that can be done without vision? The local
cable company asks so much for making the connection that I assumed it was
extremely difficult. If it requires vision, does it require color
distinction since one person with vision I can ask for help is color blind.

Powerline Networking

A powerline network relies on a network that all homes already include by
default, the power network. The electrical system in your home consists of
one or more fuse boxes and copper wiring that runs between each power
outlet to give your electronics the current they require to operate. A
powerline network simply taps into this existing network and uses the
copper wiring to pass data bits between powerline network adapters.
Powerline adapters utilize a technology called OFDM (orthogonal
frequency-division multiplexing), which enables the copper wiring to carry
multiple data streams even while powering appliances and devices
throughout your home. The latest devices also work independent of line
voltage and current frequency to provide a consistent and reliable
networking experience.
This Internet access solution makes a lot of sense because there's always
an outlet near the computer and another outlet near the Internet-enabled
devices you'll likely be using. And if you can plug in a power adapter and
an Ethernet cable, you can install and configure a powerline network
yourself in minutes.

If both scanners work correctly on your PC and both scanners work
incorrectly on your husband's PC then the problem is not with the
  scanners.

The problem lies somewhere between the scanner and the videeo display
on
  your husband's PC.

I suggest comparing the optional settings in the scanner-related
software
between those on your PC and those on your husband's PC. If no
  differences
exist there, compare the drivers for the scanner between both PC's. If
  no
differences exist there, compare the video drivers between both PC's.
If
  no
differences exist there, the problem is probably hardware related with
  your
  husband's PC.

  Subject: [Blind-Computing] Scanner question

My husband and I both have the same make and model of scanner. We both
  have
the same scanning and reading programs on our computers--Text cloner
and
  OpenBook 6.

My scanner works perfectly while his only shows half of a page
  vertically.
I have switched scanners thinking maybe his was defective, but the same
  problem occurs on his computer.

Any ideas why this would happen and then how do I fix it?

[Blind-Computing] list for users of old braille equipment

2009-02-23 Thread lloydfuge352
Hi:

That's the question. Is there such a list, and can anyone supply information
about subscribing?

I have a Braille Blazie which I would like to put to use.

Thanks in advance.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] New version of NVDA

Hi, everyone. I heard that there's a new version of NVDA that just came
out. Does anyone know the link for this new version? I'm thinking of
trying it out. If it works, I'll use it to shop on the Albertsons
website.
I like Albertsons better than Vons because they seem to have a better
selection of foods to choose from.

 Many thanks in advance.
 Rosemarie
