Re: [Blind-Computing] Using Windows XP compatibility mode in Windows 7
Hi John and all, VMware Player is absolutely free to use and it is brilliantly accessible. Previously you could only run virtual machines created with other VMware products, but as of 3.0 and higher you can create and manage virtual machines all with the Player software. Also if you have the XP Mode package instaled you can import the Windows XP Mode virtual machine directly into Player and you run it just like any other virtual machine. Please note there is a wizard that you need to complete. This wizard is inside the virtual machine itself, and therefore is not accessible with speech. You will need either sighted assistance or take screenshots and perform OCR so that you can complete the wizard. Basically you have to accept the XP Mode license agreement, then it talks about regional and language settings, then it asks for a computer name and (optionally) a password, then it talks about setting the date and time. Once you complete the wizard the virtual machine restarts and you can use Narrator to help you till you get your screen reader installed. Hope this helps.
