Re: [Blind-Computing] question: Olympus ds 30, 40, and 50 recorder

2007-11-27 Thread Francis E. Khan
I am visiting Tampa, Florida for about a month from December 6 and will take
the opportunity to purchase the DS50 recorder provided the cost doesn't
bankrupt me. The Royal National Institute for the Blind in the United Kingdom
has issued a guide on using this gadget so I hope to be able to get a lot more
out of it.

For personal use I have an Olympus 3300 model of some type, and it is about
3 years old. I love it and use it all of the time to record quick notes,
lists of to do's, items to buy at the store, items to pack, etc. The DS 40
was purchased for me at work. I use it in a similar way that I use my
personal one, but I also use it to record brief items when a co-worker reads
them to me. I don't think that I could live with out either device. It is
my hope to soon learn how to interface my DS 40 to my computer and make use
of the index feature while recording a meeting. Of course this would entail
getting the other meeting participants to agree to letting me record the
meeting. But I'm not about to stir that pot until I learn to use the
  indexing feature.

Go to

nfbnet.org

One of the first links on the page will take you to a list of all of the
lists that are available. Just navigate through the list until you find
Electronics-Talk. There might even be other lists that might be helpful.

Re: [Blind-Computing] question: Olympus ds 30, 40, and 50 recorder

2007-11-26 Thread James Scholes
The ds30/40/50's are voice recorders, not PDA's, so you would be able to
store voice recordings of phone numbers and other souch info in it, however,
if you stored any other type of file (e.g. text files) it would store them
but not read them. For just making short notes like storing phone numbers, I
would not reccommend this recorder as you would be paying for something that
you would not use to its full potential if you just stored phone numbers and
things like that on it.

There's a cale for transferring downloaded music or books to the recorder

I guess this question qualifies as computer related. Thanks for any info.

Hi I have the 40. I love it. I use it at work to record names, numbers,

I've not had time to learn how to connect it to the computer to make use

 is
supposed to have an Indexing feature that you can use while recording for

Re: [Blind-Computing] question: Olympus ds 30, 40, and 50 recorder

2007-11-25 Thread Annette
It comes with a printed manual that contains a lot of diagrams. I gave up
scanning it. I had my husband set the time and read the directions on how
to record, play, and erase recordings. I keep telling myself that I'm going
to see if I can find an electric version of the manual on line, but just
haven't gotten around to it. This is why I haven't learned to interface it
with the computer, or use the indexing feature.

Guess some correspondence with Olympus is in order. What are they thinking?
More questions: do all or some of the buttons speak? Or is it beeps? Can
you scroll through files in the folders? I'm starting to wonder whether I
should investigate more pricey pda's.
Does anyone on this list recommend a good blind assistive tech list that a

2007-11-25 Thread Annette
As you move through the folders, it does announce them, Folder A, Folder
B,...Music Folder, Audible Folder.

Your recorded messages do not have file names that you navigate through.
When you are looking for a message that you previously recorded, you press
play and start listening to the message and if it is not the one you are
looking for, then you press the forward button and skip to the next message.
You can stop listening to a message and then continue when you are ready.

You might want to join the NFB electronics Talk list. I'm sure that the
members of this group can provide you with info about this device and others
that might have features that will better meet your needs.

HTH,
Annette

David, all of this does sound complicated. I was hoping the three new
Olympus recorders would be simple. I had a Parrot Plus once but it drove me
nuts with the complicated buttons, modes, etc. So I gave it away to a
college student who had the patience to master it. Marilyn

Hi I have the 40. I love it. I use it at work to record names, numbers,
things to do, or anything else that most people write down on a sticky note.
I've not had time to learn how to connect it to the computer to make use of
the WAV file on the computer, or transferring music or audible books. It is
supposed to have an Indexing feature that you can use while recording for
example a meeting, but I'm yet to learn to use it.

Hi. Does anyone have one of those Olympus ds 40 or ds 50 digital talking
pda's? The AFB Access World on line issue for Nov./Dec. has a review of
the ds 40, making it sound like a nice gadget that comes with various mg's.
There's a cale for transferring downloaded music or books to the recorder so
I guess this question qualifies as computer related. Thanks for any info.
I want to use it primarily, at first, for phone numbers and addresses.
