Stock springs, stock everthing! Just about the entire front end has been replaced
with new parts... struts, control arms, ball joints, bushings, rotors, pads, strut
hats, etc... car drove well, no issues that would indicate there was even a
problem... left side strut has oil residue all over the housing, and the right
is as clean as it was when new, but both front wheels bounce like a basketball
(especially the left) when
hitting a bump in the road...

Larry,

The front Sport Bilsteins on our '95 325i are going on 8 years old with no
sign of wear (that I can detect). Certainly 2.5yrs/25k miles is abnormal.

The only difference between HD and Sport for e36 body Bilsteins are the rod
length (Sports are short). Valving is the same.

Do you have stock springs? If not, running HD Bils with sport/lowering
springs will quickly reduce their lifetime. I discovered this by initially
installing rear HD on our '95. This is with H&R Sport springs on all four
corners. The rear shocks wore out in 3 years due to bottoming I would guess.

I have a 1993 318is that I use as a daily driver, no drivers ed or
autocrosses with it. I installed new Bilstein HD struts in June of '01 on
this car. Both front struts are now completely shot. Should struts not
last longer than 2.5 years and 25k miles, especially Bilsteins? Anybody
else have any similar experiences? And since I am going to have to replace
these again, any recommendations? If I go with Bilsteins again, what's the
difference between the HD's and the Sports?

They should last much longer.

Lucky for you, you bought Bilsteins. They should be under warranty.
Call them and get a new set. BTDT.

Larry,

Since you paid for the Bilstein Lifetime Warranty you could replace them
under that warranty.

The usual sequence is to send in your old struts for evaluation, then they
send out your new ones. If you can't wait, they'll send new ones to you on
your charge card, then credit you once the failed ones are returned and
evaluated. This policy may vary based on the retailer.

good luck,

Mike

Would love to see pix of that BRG E32.

Also, I find painting addictive too. About to shoot
my 87 944. 2 complete cars and 1 partial done since I
learnt a few years ago. Not including various friends
I've helped with it.

I've promised myself the 87 will be my last project
though. Moving to house, yard and concrete work
instead.

Eric, I don't have any personal experience with buying or selling a 320i,
but a good friend of mine owned one, which his 17 year old son is now
driving. Also, I've had a few E30s, the model that came after the E21. I
would put your mother-in-law's car in a price range from $1800 to $2500.
Higher in the range if she has service records. Also, higher in the range
if it passes smog. I suggest taking the car for a smog test, and then
advertise that it has passed. As a bonus, higher in the range if the
little old lady is not from Passadena! :^) (No, that is not a knock
on Passadena, it is a reference to the song by Jan and Dean from 1964.)

Could scented fluids possibly be for crusty old GM
mechanics? A dab behind each ear and they'll smell
fresh & fruity for hours!!

The E34 touring (though not the M5 version) actually was sold into 1996
(year of our lord), although it can't be long after the introduction of the
E39 in Sept 1995 that BMW kept making it. BMW GB even went to the lengths
of printing a new brochure for that MY - I've got one.

Petrol Mica - normally an Individual colour - was a limited-edition hue for
the 5er touring late in its life, featuring in various "Executive" trims and
the like. So despite not being anything like an M5 Touring, it is different
in at least one respect.

I have a 2000 M5 and would like to add the TV tuner and inputs for video. I
found one place who can do it for $1300. I found another place that will
provide all harnesses, modules and instructions for $950.

?

Has anyone seen this cheaper? It seems expensive.

Hi Jason,

Here is a nice write up I like...

http://www.unofficialbmw.com/e36/drivetrain/e36_change_manual_transmission_fluid.html

It should be more or less how it looks like down there
for the Z3, too. At least for the manual tranny car.
I actually never been under an auto tranny BMW, so I
don't know if it would apply to a auto tranny car.
