An issue with "U"rethane bushings that everyone fails to take into account
is the degradation in spring rate.

Replace your control arm bushings with urethane and leave stock springs and
shocks in the car and you've just done the equivalent of putting softer
springs in your car. Yeah, there's an upgrade for ya.

Urethane inserts in a stock bushing are a different thing entirely and
shouldn't be compared with the general inability of urethane to do the job
for which it's sold.

If you have a street car, use rubber. If you have a race car, use metal.

Brett,

Is it your opinion that all urethane applications are inappropriate?
My M3 has mostly Ground Control spherical bushings except for the
urethane subframe mounts which I just installed. It also has the TC
Kline "Trackline" shocks and springs. I use the car for mostly track
events and am still on street tires although I do drive it on the
street from time to time. Have you seen problems with the urethane
subframe mounts? They sure made a difference in the handling over the
worn out stock ones.

And therein lies the truth behind the popularity of this garbage.

Hands up all those who have replaced brand new rubber bushings with
eurethane?
Anyone?
Bueller?

Change a worn out rubber bushing with a block of wood and it will make a
noticeable improvement. Doesn't mean it's right, or even good.

Brett -
I'm curious about this myself, it seems many BMW Club racers run
Powerflex bushings, which I believe are urethane. I'm one of them -
spherical bushings all round in the rear, but Powerflex subframe bushing.
Problem?
thx,
Joe

I'm guessing that Brett's point was that we tend to replace worn out stock
components with new aftermarket components, and then jump to the conclusion
that the aftermarket part is better than stock, when it only demonstrates
that the aftermarket part is better than the WORN OUT stock part. We might
have been just as happy with a new stock part.

But I'm sure he'll speak for himself!;)

Brett's point is that he doen't like Urethane and doen't want another
car in his shop with a broken bushing.

Personally If you are running Poly on a street car you have to watch
it and make sure you keep it greased. I am not totally inclined to
agree that all Poly is softer than the stock rubber as Poly can be
made in different consistancies.

I can vouch for the opinion that urethane bushing are lousy for street
driving. My 95 M3 went through a set in six months with the white delrin
insert falling out of the center and the hole egging out something terrible.
I wouldn't listen to the techs I knew either. I am now a happy camper with
the stock 95 M3 bushings. I just thought of a new catchphrase for this:
"Friends don't let friends install polyurethane bushings"

What about Delrin as a bushing material?
