Subject: <E36> M3 VANOS problems?
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Hey all,

Two problems:

1) In the last couple of weeks, I've noticed what just
sounds like noisy valves getting noisier. I noticed
my oil level was a bit low, so I topped it up, but the
noise is still persistent. I know people have
described a bad VANOS as "marbles in a can", but I
guess what I think of at hearing that phrase is a much
higher pitched sound of glass marbles spinning and
rattling around in the bottom of a coffee can, and my
engine sure doesn't sound like that. It's just a loud
rattling noise that you can hear at idle, or even more
so just off of idle (at about 1000 rpm) at the front
of the engine. I know this is somewhat vague, but the
noise is quite apparent and beginning to unsettle me.
Is it bad to drive the car hard with the VANOS going
out? The car has almost 95k on it right now, so I
guess it's about time for a new VANOS?

2) Other than my Conforti chip, what else would
contribute MOST to causing heavy ping at WOT under
load? Bad plugs, O2 sensors? Maybe I need a tune up
too -- time to check the records for when these were
last replaced.

Brian,

Have you replaced the primary timing chain tensioner yet? That is a
five minute job and really did a lot to quiet my vanos down. Another
possible source of a rattling noise at the front of the engine is the
serpentine belt idlers and tensioner pulley, all of which can make a
lot of noise when they have some miles on them. I would check all of
those before you assume that the vanos unit itself is bad.

Regards

Hi all,
I just picked up a 99 528i Wagon for my wife and need to put some new
shoes on it. This is her grocery getter and will not see any serious
performance driving, so I'd like to put on some quiet all season rubber
that can muddle through the 4 or 5 snowy days each winter here in KC.
It has the sport package, so the tires are 235/45/17. Anyone have a
tire in this size they love? Anyone tried the Kuhmo ASX or the Avon
Tech M550? The Avon has the highest ratings from Tirerack, but the
total miles traveled is pretty low. The ContiExtremeContact also looks
good. As always, thanks for the input.

Subject says it all. Our soon to be ex-touring is going to need new
shoes. Anyone got any laying around that they'd like to sell? I hate
to spring for brand new rubber just to sell a car, but one of mine is
starting to separate...
