I had one of these for my e21 and e12. They were helpful to learn on, but Bentley and the groupthink here and other places (as well as ETK) have made these luxury items IMHO. although...it's hard to find out stuff for my M42 powered e30! But this one won't help there either. r/jpg -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of John Bunda Sent: Wednesday, June 14, 2006 2:22 PM To: bmwuucdigest@uucdigest.com Subject: [UUC] E30 FSM on da bay In case there are any other E30 guys on the list, I put my spare FSM on eBay, started at $99, no reserve. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=8075341 652 Thanks, John Search the ARCHIVES:http://www.mail-archive.com/bmwuucdigest@uucdigest.com __________________________________________________________________________ In memory of Michel Potheau - friend, enthusiast, founder of the BMW CCA. It seemed I could never get the thing bled properly. It would work for a day, then overheat rapidly. Turned out to be a slowly failing headgasket that apparantly was allowing combustion gases into the coolant system. The gasket finally failed enough to blow out coolant on the exhaust side of cylinder one so I could see it. No apparant coolant leaking into the cylinders. I've pulled the head and it's on its way to a local machine shop (Scroggins, Houston) for checking, cleaning, valve seats, valve stem seals, etc. It is very clean and appears to be in good shape for 160k, so what is conventional wisdom on the valve guides? Do they need changing? Also, on both the original and the replacement head gasket, some of the holes for the coolant passages are tiny, while the actual block passage is much larger. Why did they do this? To throttle the coolant flow? Would it improve flow by enlarging the headgasket holes? By the way, the tops of the cylinders and the combustion chambers are surprisingly free of carbon. Credit must go to Chevron and Techcron. I proudly related this to a representative from BMW Mobile Tradition who was visiting Maximillian Importing Company and he explained that they were made the size in the gasket as necessary to keep the cylinder temperatures consistent from cylinder to cylinder to allow the Motronic to better control emmissions. I would leave them as produced, were I to do the job today. The holes in the gasket are sized to meter water flow. Most of the water should pass through the block to the rear, then up to the head to the front, but a little can pass up in between the cylinders. If you enlarge the holes in the gasket, there will be insufficient water flow to the rear cylinders.
