Ben,

Hello. I would suggest that you take the caliper apart and look at it.
 It
probably is not that bad.. Even if there is a bit of rust, you can polish it
off a bit.. If not, I have heard places like autozone have re-built
calipers that can be bough rather cheaply..

Good luck
Mo

Howdy folks. It has been ages since I have posted and maybe somewhere
in the past there has been this discussion, but I would have missed
it. Here it goes: I have been traveling alot and the aging steed that
is my 95 M3 has been doing a lot of sitting. I was having some issues
with the left rear brake caliper, but it seems to have been made
worse from sitting. I need to either a) replace the caliper or b)
repair it.

If I go with "a" I am faced with a really expensive part if I buy
oem, so the question is, is there a direct replacement that doesn't
come with M pricing. I really don't care about the M logo cast into
the housing. I thought that a caliper from a 540 might work, but I
look to the collective intelligence of the group. Or like old M3
exhaust systems, does anyone have some good calipers they pulled off
during an upgrade they would be willing to sell cheap?

If I decide to rebuild it, I suspect the piston is too corroded to
save. Is there a source of replacement pistons? The seal kit is very
reasonable and this may be the way to go if I could get a new piston.
The problem is, I have one shot to get all the work done and I can't
take apart the car and let it sit while I hunt down parts. I need to
get all my ducks in a row before I do the job.

Thanks,

Ben Greisler

I actually spent 3 years (1987-1990) running an '87 944 Turbo at drivers
schools, an average of ~12 schools per year. The only problem I ever
had was a blown head gasket due to the fact that I had a car phone
installed and they somehow tapped into the fuse for the cooling fan. I
thought it was the perfect car - I could get 4 mounted wheels & tires,
jack, jack stands, tools, wash bucket, some spares, and my luggage in
the back, drive to the track in air-conditioned comfort, and then have a
great car for the track. I think the guy who bought it from me still
runs it in PCA racing.

Subject: <M42> Water in Spark Plug Well
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I had a friend's son detail the engine compartment of our '91 318is
last weekend. Afterwards there was an intermittant miss. The coil
unit and fuse box had been covered with plastic, but not the spark
plug cover. I suspected water had gotten in there, and I was right -
water in the #4 spark plug well. I dried it out best I could with
available tools and supplies (no compressed air in my garage , I'm
sorry to say) and then took it for a ride. It stumbled once under
load going up a hill with the AC on, but then ran fine the rest of the
drive.

Could shorting due to the water have caused some damage that I should
find and fix?

I also found and re-seated a vacuum hose that was not quite fully
seated on its fitting. Must have gotten moved during the cleaning.

TIA,

Ah, you let Matt get his hands on it huh? As for the water, its
probably OK, just let it evaporate. As for the vacuum hose, I had
the same thing happen when I repaired my A/C a week or so ago. I
forgot to reattach one of the vacuum hoses when I mis-mounted the
airbox back on and the car barely ran. As soon as I re-seated the
airbox and reattached the hose, it fired right up and ran pretty good
(although its time for me to replace the plugs).

BTW, when are we going to see pics of this thing?

Well other than the dent on the hood, mis-matched Natur beige interior
(325is leather passenger and back seats, cloth door panels and torn up
cloth driver's seat , with the 325is door panels needing installation
and enough time for me to cobble together seat parts to make one good
leather driver's seat) and 15" wheels that were more common on the Z1,
it is your basic white E30 318is with 300K miles in need of serious
paint improvement work. From the pics you would not know about the
Porterfield R4S brake pads, Treehouse Racing control arm bushings or
convertible front / M3 rear sway bars.

Our daughter took some pictures a couple of weeks ago when we actually
owned 4 BMWs at one time (3 E30s, one since sold, and one E34). Once
she gets them posted somewhere, I'll provide a link.

Scott
