The HVAC fan E34 530i occasionally quits running in all but the highest
position. This only happens in conjunction with A/C, never when blowing
heated air.
Any idea why?

Its in cold air when the heater is on, and in hot air when the A/C is on.
It has a thermal protection contact in it.

This would never have happened with a BMW OBMWC (?)

<RANT>

Family car is a 2002 Audi Allroad. 41k, rumbles around suburban
Northern VA streets living in a garage. We were nervous about buying an
allroad, so got it with a CPO-factory , 100k warranty good til 2009.

Car starts making a noise that sounds like a timing chain tensioner to
me, but I'm always "wrong" (I am married after all) so we take it to
the professionals at HBL in Tyson's VA

Next day they diagnose a loose heat shield that they tighten for free,
and they also find:

- Oil leak from turbo -- Not covered -- $350
- Both front CV boots torn -- Not covered -- $1100

Wondering why we struggled (and paid) to get a CPO car, we cough up
the money and my wife picks up the car, only to confirm that the
original noise is still there *while still driving in the dealer
parking lot.*

She rolled back into the too-nice service welcome bay (is that why
service rates are skyrocketing?) revving the motor for effect. Dealer
puts her back in her Kia rental car (which we get to drive on vacation
for a week) while they re-diagnose and wait for the part.

Just needed to vent and warn people

1) READ the fine print on a CPO warranty, run through worst cases in
your head to see what really is covered.

2) Think twice, no three times before buying an Audi product. I know
the front shafts do a lot of work, but every VW/audi I've ever owned
seems to treat boots as consumables. My Hondas never did that.

3) the words, "cold dead hands," come to mind when I think of parting
with my E36

I'd think you have options to fix the non-warranty parts. People have BMW
horror stories also. Come to my house and I will re-boot your CVs for only
$1000.

Marc,

If it's any consolation, almost exact same thing happened to me w/my cpo
2001 allroad (lower case by design) from audi of Alexandria. (worst
service department EVER).

In for routine service under warranty, found an oil leak on rear of the
right cylinder head, preventive maintenance, all good, right?

Picked up the car early in the AM (Chrysler MiniVan for loaner...seesh)
headed down the road to Norfolk on a 200 mile business trip. 90 miles
into it, fillin up, saw some smoke from the engine bay....towtruck back
to audi of Richmond...none of the valve cover bolts were tightened (hey,
they didn't strip them, right!). They gooped it up w/sealant and it went
back to the dealer, I get it back just in time to drive up the East
Coast for Thanksgiving, 5 miles from the house, then entire inside of
the car fills up w/smoke when I accelerate onto the highway. Turns out
they dorked up a banjo bolt on the high pressure oil line to the turbo
when putting in a new valve cover gasket. Oil dumping all over the
exhaust manifold (nice). Went immediately to CarMax after they 'fixed
it' again.

Did I mention that the tiptronic+2.7T was a binary from a stop? Fun
stuff. Never again....and by better half will always remind me of that
when I look at S4's, TT's those cute little A3's go by.

Happy ending, sold the car to CarMax for just about what I paid for it
($24k)...the 'replacement' car is my 88 M3 (joy).

cheers!
