My ASC light (in between speedo and tach) is now steadily lit. It used to
come on occasionally and then go away once the car was restarted. I've let
the rear tires get pretty worn (more fun that way), but I'm wondering if
the system can be sensetive enough to detect such a slight diameter
difference between front and rear and throw the light.

Kevin,
not likely...90% of the time this code is due to a bad abs wheel sensor. 
The rear one seems to be the most likely to fail 1st for some reason.

I had this happen on my 96 328i, and it turned out to be related to the 
throttle control module (I think).
