Well this is a wee bit frustrating. Instructions say to fill (motor running)
until ATF begins to drip from the fill hole. Yeah, well, this is a highly
pressurized hydraulic system... open the fill hole with the motor idling, and
she spits air and fluid at considerable velocity. And for every pump of fluid
that goes in, same comes right back out.

So in frustration, I forced in about 4l (motor off)... tightly holding the end
of the hose in the fill hole (this trans is a sealed container, difficult to
force fluid into a sealed container). I think she's still about a liter short
(based on what I drained)... but she's drivable (feels a bit less crisp when
shifting, though). I'll see if I can force another liter or so tomorrow
morning... and we'll see if that restores the crisp feel.

Fluid drained (72K miles) is *extremely* dirty. Bottom of the pan covered in
probably 1/16" of silt. Magnet probably 1/4" deep in silt. I have to believe
a much more frequent change interval would have really helped. She survives
this, I'll do it again soon (just fluid), and do the whole thing again every
30K or so.

If one was to find this trans in a GM car, would it also be touted as having
"lifetime" fluid? Or is that just a BMW thing?

And if anybody has any BTDT tips on how to fill this turkey, I'd be keenly
interested.

Kevin,

This was not my experience, no spitting or belching or anything until I
reached the level and it slowly dripped back out.

Also, this transmission is clearly vented, the fluid level changes
dramatically between cold and operating temp and the system is not
pressurized like a radiator.

Yeah, I guess it must be vented (not a lot, though, forcing fluid in requires
some pressure).

I jammed in another liter or so after writing this note (motor off)... and
with this, she seems to be shifting just fine.

Sure wish I understood this.....

I am debating about going from 16" ti either 17" or 18" wheels on my 96 ti
Sport. My plan has been to put 17"x8" et38's on with either 225/45-17 or maybe
235/45-17 tires. Trouble is my prefered wheelis unavailable for several
months...anyone know where I can snag at least 1 more Enkei NT03+M 17"x8" 5x120
wheel, as I have a possible source for 3 of them and 3 a car doesn't make LOL!!!

The same wheel is a available in 18"x8" et35 with only a slight weight penalty
that is easily negated by the reduction in weight of the tires in the 225/40-18
and 235/40-18 size that I would likely use. My worry is that it will end up
having too rough of a ride and I will have issues with bent rims from potholes
and such, roads in the Richmond area really suck.

My car does have TC Kline D/A coilovers and caster/camber plates on the front
and Kline shocks and springs in the back as well running 450...soon to be 400lb
springs front and 500lb rear at near stock height.

I appreciate any and all commentsand suggestions.

Subject: Oil Leak filling all spark plug wells!
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Ok, this one just ruined my test day today at Spring Mtn Motorsports Park
(wow! have they improved the facilities there!).

Background: First track day for race car after dropping in a 2.8 motor and
making it run via the OBD 1 electronics (pretty easy with email groups like
this to help). The head is the same as the S50 head (even has the two holes
for the temp sensors!). I'm running S50 cams and 21.5 lb/hr injectors,
headers to a small muffler (single pipe, no cat) w/a custom chip. Nicely
idles and revs.

So I get on the track at 9am this morning and after one lap I'm smelling
some burning, but I just figured I was bedding in the new rotors a bit too
hard. Second turn is a 180 degree sweeper to the left and on my second lap
I look in my mirror (it exits at a passing zone) and notice that I am
putting up a pretty good smoke screen. Hmmm, maybe my tires are rubbing
with the new rear suspensions bits? Nope, that's oil smoke. Come into the
pits and the smoke is boiling out from under the hood. Fortunately no fire.

Upon further investigation 5 out of the 6 spark plug wells (1 - 5, 6 was
pretty much dry) are full of oil (thank goodness for the new coil boots so
no DME killing short!). WTF? Oil was pouring out of the wells under left
hand turns and hitting the nice new (hot) headers. I pull the valve cover
(obd1 cover from S50) and yes, the little gaskets that go between the spark
plug wells and the valve cover were in place with no apparent crimps, etc.
in gasket. All of the nuts holding the valve cover on felt like they had
equal torque when I loosened them up.

I checked the vent line to the throttle body boot by blowing in it and air
went through w/no problem.

I have a new valve cover gasket kit ready to install. I also have the
grommets that go into the valve cover (that the nuts go through). Figured I
would clean off the valve cover contact areas too (some flaking finish on
other areas of cover so maybe?). Anything else to look for? Other things
that could cause this? I'm stumped yet again.

I'm off to Phoenix for the Club Race March 7-9 so I really don't want to tow
all the way down there only for this problem to recur.

Thanks for your help.
