Hi Jo Anne waves back

Even better: I also had twins, just like Julia! :)

Eldest is now 7 and the twins are 3. Totally exhausting. Am sitting here on
the couch with my laptop recovering from having to drag them out of bed
waay too early (they're evening folk like me) and into their clothes (not
their sister's) and stuff some food in them and then out with daddy off to
school daycare (he had to make two runs today as the eldest would have been
late for the 8.30 deadline) Good thing I can work from home so often…

Beamed energy propulsion

2011-09-19 Thread Keith Henson
Beamed energy is the only way I know to get into space with at least a
200 to one cost reduction.

This was just announced:

NASA Announces Two Game-Changing Space Technology Projects
Published by Klaus Schmidt on Sat Sep 17, 2011 12:27 pm via: NASA
The “Ride the Light” concept seeks to provide external power on
demand for aerospace vehicles and other applications. The concept uses
beamed power and propulsion produced by commercially available power
sources such as lasers and microwave energy. The project will attempt
to develop a low-cost, modular power beaming capability and explore
multiple technologies to function as receiving elements of the beamed
power.
This combination of technologies could be applied to space
propulsion, performance and endurance of unpiloted aerial vehicles or
ground-to-ground power beaming applications. Development of such
capabilities fulfills NASA’s strategic goal of developing high payoff
technology and enabling missions otherwise unachievable with today’s
technology.

Personally I started using FB as I find it superior to twitter for the
microblogging activity, as I often felt I needed more than 160 characters
to talk about what I wanted to talk about. It's a great way to stir up
conversations, or even to track what I'm doing with my various project. Also
David participates there, and actually occasionally talks about science and
fiction (and sometimes even science fiction!). That can't be a bad thing...

I agree with Jon's comments about top and bottom posting.

Gmail does a great job of grouping e-mails, so quoted text is just an
annoyance as far as I am concerned. Isn't a stand-alone e-mail like this
one easier to read than one with a lot of quoted text?

Wayne--

Hi. I'm top-posting both to make my point and because that's
what this webmail client wants to do. (My own computer has
video card issues at the moment.)

If one wants to reply to several different points in a previous
post, it makes sense to do this in one email. But how does
one indicate which replies go with which points? By separating
the points, and putting replies below them, of course.

I'm still here, of course. Recently joined NetBase as director of product
management, so I'm busy getting up to speed.

One of the data points NetBase has developed is that despite Twitter,
Facebook, etc., the real conversation still happens, and is increasing, in
forums, list servers, etc. Discussion tends to start in the new social
media, but if it has any depth, it goes into venues where some depth is
supported.

I suppose if we really want to revive Brin-L, we need to have links to it
appearing periodically in social media.

Re: Electronic interface options

2011-09-19 Thread Doug Pensinger
Personally, I like this format over FB, and maybe over G+ too. The
fan sites have much less a sense of community than this list has (or
had). I use Gmail and it automatically hides quoted text so that's
not a big issue (it also has the best spam filter by far that I've
come across).

FB is good for friends and family and I've resisted the temptation to
compile as many friends as I can, even trimming the list a bit now and
then. I turn all the game stuff off and I don't respond to pokes and
all that as I don't really see the point.

I think G+ is superior to FB but most of my FB friends haven't
transitioned there so I'm stuck with having to follow both. I have a
Brin-l circle on G+ but I only have something like 9 people in it.
I'd be interested to know how many of you all are on G+ and in trying
that out as a possible successor to the mailing list, but, you know, I
really miss the good old days

Doug
