Re: what is the device.map used for ?

Not a bug, not even a problem - just curious.

I understand what the device.map is and how to specify it, but I have
yet to come across something that uses it;

When you boot and grub appears device.map has no sense. hd0 is the first
hard disk given by the bios, hd1 is the second... and so.

If you're under a unix/gnu/linux environment grub needs to know which
linux device correspond to which grub device.

If no device.map exists grub says: Trying to guess BIOS devices... this
may take some time.
You can edit the device.map but usually is created when installing the
distro, anaconda, creates it.

When you run grub there's an option to select another device.map file...
you know it can be: my_own_device.map.

When you run grub there's an option so that it does not read any
device.map file.

And there's the command (only inside the grub shell under a linux
environment) you suspected which's name is device.

device (hd0) /dev/hda

maps the /dev/hda disk to (hd0) and it overrides what you already
specified with the device.map or another device command.

Usign the device command (or editing device.map) is useful for
installing grub in pendrives,... because pendrives devices are not
usually included on device.map files.

Re: Gub 0.97 prevents boot from CD

Hi—

I have been trying to go from FC4 to FC5. I set my computer to boot
from the CD drive first. I put in the disks (I have burned several) and
each time the Grub Stage2 comes up and diverts control from the CD drive
to the hard drive boot. What can I do to get my computer to boot from
the CD drive first?

1) You can try to burn correctly the FC5 disk to a cdrom.

To check if you've burned it correctly you can try just before trying to
boot from it to try to boot it from qemu with:

(/dev/cdrom is your cdrom device)

qemu -boot d -cdrom /dev/cdrom

If the cd does not boot in the qemu environment that means that you have
not burned it correctly.

2) You can download
http://adrian15.raulete.net/grub/tiki-download_file.php?fileId=58
this floppy image (To be burned into a floppy with dd after bunzip2ing)
and try to boot your cdrom with BOOT FROM CDROM option.

3) You can check if your bios battery has finished its life and you have
to replace it. (Once you've change the BOOT order have you power down
the machine... rebooted... and checked and that it is still there?).

that that the installation don't modify the MBR. The way on the HD is
/mnt/hda1. I tried to start Grub-install from live-Kaella, but it refuse
to modify the MBR.
Plesae, What I have to do to complete the installation of Easy 2.1 ?
Or where it is possible to find an help ?

Thank, sincerely,

Try to reinstall Grub on the MBR.
The easiest way to do so is:
To check the option: Restore Grub on the MBR. Auto. Auto. from the Super
Grub Disk Cdrom which is available from: http://adrian15.raulete.net/grub/

The cdrom is multilingual thus you can select Français from main menu
and it will be even easier.

[bug #16609] flash update ASUS bios, Grub wrote error mesage to mbr

2006-05-17 Thread adrian15

Follow-up Comment #2, bug #16609 (project grub):

If you try to reinstall Ubuntu you will see that I will boot again. That's my
bet. But you can try to reinstall Grub on the Mbr only with Super Grub Disk
Cdrom (if you only have a Linux) which is here:

http://adrian15.raulete.net/grub/

Reinstall GRUB on the MBR
Auto.
Auto.

I've heard that Grub to boot depends on some geometry parametres that are
passed by the bios.

The bios update (changing these geometry parametres) might have confused grub
but if you reinstall it again it will take the right parametres and will work
ok.
