although it doesn't make much sense to use a tie here LP shouldn't exit
fatally:


  \new Staff=A { c'1~ \change Staff=B c'}
  \new Staff=B { \clef bass R1 R }


up to 2.17.13 the pdf was created.

Oh, I didn't think so far as to post that here :-)

But OTOH I think that _does_ make sense because musically it _is_ a tie.
So apart from having a bug report about the crash, this should be a 
feature request to somehow handle cross-staff ties (e.g. by internally 
changing it to a slur).

Please raise 2 issues - one as a regression, crash, critical for the crash. 
I'll find the commit that caused it.  The other as an enhancement requesting 
cross-staff ties (although the concept is rather weird to me - I'd wonder 
how many pianists would sight read it correctly...)
