Re: [cayugabirds-l] KING EIDER in Fall Cr
The KING EIDER was still present between 9:30-9:45 and best seen from the trail stretching from the Boathouse along the creek as it was slowly moving north towards the lake. While I was there (with other observers) it was actively feeding, frequently diving and returning to the surface with crayfish. [cayugabirds-l] Fox Sparrow at feeders
Hi all, I was very surprised to see a very red FOX SPARROW under my feeder in northeast Ithaca this morning. A late record and one of the few I've had in my suburban yard. Like others I've had a single AM TREE SPARROW for the past few days -- also surprisingly uncommon in my yard -- and two female PURPLE FINCHES (the first I've had since October). [cayugabirds-l] Canada's Migrating
Hi all, Last couple of days I have observed several skeins (correct?) of geese in the sky. I guess it is getting cold and they are feeling it! [cayugabirds-l] King Eider
The King Eider had moved into the deeper waters of the lake proper by 3:30 p.m., and swam back and forth parallel to the willows, varying between 25-50 yards off shore. It dove a number of times in the light chop, but I could not see any food in its bill. A large raft of Canada Geese separated it from the shoreline. Binoculars were sufficient to see him, but a borrowed scope allowed me to fully appreciate the eider's fantastic form and plumage. Even in the fading light, green was clearly visible beneath its eyes as were the crisp black outlines on its face and the wavy contrasting body feathers—quite a thrilling sight. I've been in bed for two months with a broken neck and went to some effort to get to the park to see the eider—and he was worth every grunt and groan Thanks to everyone for their entertaining reports, photos, and video footage. *Happy Holidays *and* Good Birding to all!* Candace E. [cayugabirds-l] unusual ducks for Dryden, Lake.
Hi All, I just saw a small flock of 5 Northern Shovlers in the little bay that never freezes on the north end of the lake. They can be seen by looking SE from the end of Southworth road. I can't remember when I last saw this species on the lake.
